Second Ebola-Infected Nurse Identified, Was Symptomatic With 99.5 Degree Fever While Flying

Tyler Durden's picture

Just about an hour ago, the CDC's Tom Frieden held a press conference in which he tried to diffuse the CDC's incompetence for a allowing healthcare workers who cared for the now deceased "Index Patient" Thomas Eric Duncan, to board a plane. A worker, who as was reported earlier today, was confirmed sick with the deadly virus. Still, in order to defend his agency from accusations of gross incompetence, of which it clearly is guilty, Frieden said that...

  • NEW PATIENT HADN'T BEEN BLEEDING OR VOMITING BEFORE FLIGHT

... Although, he promptly pushed the ball of blame back in her court adding that:

  • NEW PATIENT KNOWINGLY EXPOSED TO EBOLA,SHOULDNT HAVE FLOWN

But what is worse, is that as the WaPo reports the nurse had a fever of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit before boarding a passenger jet on Monday, a day before she reported symptoms of the virus and was tested, according to public health officials. "Even though there appeared to be little risk for the other people on that flight, she should not have traveled that way, Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a news conference Wednesday."

“She should not have flown on a commercial airline,” Frieden said.

The reason he said that is that since she was clearly symptomatic, she was also contagious. Which explains why the CDC is scrambling to uncover all those passengers who may have flowen with her.

Furthermore, the nurse has now been identified: "The health-care worker was not identified by public health officials, but family members told Reuters and the Dallas Morning News that her name is Amber Vinson, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. She was part of a team that had cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who flew to Texas and was diagnosed with Ebola last month, during his hospitalization in Dallas. Duncan died last week. Nina Pham, a nurse who also cared for Duncan, was diagnosed with Ebola on Sunday."

And where it gets simply ridiculous is that not only did the nurse fly once, she flied a second time, this time from Cleveland to Texas on Monday.

Vinson, who flew from Dallas to Cleveland on Friday, flew back to Texas on Monday, a day after Pham was diagnosed. She reported a fever on Tuesday and was isolated and tested for Ebola.

Still, the fact that she boarded a commercial flight raises the question of how much the other 50 health-care workers who entered Duncan’s room could have traveled or moved around in recent days. The CDC recommends controlled movement on private flights or vehicles for people who may have been exposed to Ebola, Frieden said.

Meanwhile, the panic to contain the possible spread of the airborne virus is full blown: as WFAA reports, "Frontier Airlines says the plane stayed at DFW International Airport overnight, and has since been cleaned. It traveled to Cleveland on Tuesday and was cleaned again. The airline says Vinson traveled to Ohio from Dallas-Fort Worth on Flight 1142 on Oct. 10.

"The safety and security of our customers and employees is our primary concern. Frontier will continue to work closely with CDC and other governmental agencies to ensure proper protocols and procedures are being followed," the airline said in a press release.

Some other details:

Wednesday morning, Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed that Vinson lives alone without pets at The Green in the Village Apartments, in the 6000 block of Village Bend near Skillman, just north of Lovers Lane.

Police and Dallas Fire-Rescue teams were at the complex early Wednesday, cleaning common areas and knocking on doors, communicating with neighbors. Reverse 911 calls were sent out at 6:15 a.m. to people who live in the area.

"We rallied together and we decided that we needed to move quickly like we did Sunday morning," Mayor Rawlings said.

He added that the state has hired a company to come in Wednesday afternoon and clean Vinson's apartment and car.

Like Pham, Vinson had also been involved in caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who died of Ebola one week ago at Presbyterian. More than 70 hospital employees had been involved in that effort and are still being monitored.

So despite the epic Snafu that Tom Frieden has managed to achieve, and we fully expect that airplane travel will see a substantial decline until the Ebola pandemic is indeed contained, we will give him props for telling one piece of the truth this weekend, when he said that "more Ebola cases are likely going to emerge." At least this time, he was telling the truth.

99.5 is not a fever. 100.4 is the clinical cutoff to be significant and likely much higher if someone with Ebola is actively shedding the virus. Nothing will likely come of this.

How did she assault everyone on the plane?

The HIGHEST disease authority in the country and agruably the world has stated:

"Ebola is not spread through the air or by water, or in general, by food. However, in Africa, Ebola may be spread as a result of handling bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) and contact with infected bats. There is no evidence that mosquitos or other insects can transmit Ebola virus. Only mammals (for example, humans, bats, monkeys, and apes) have shown the ability to become infected with and spread Ebola virus.

Healthcare providers caring for Ebola patients and the family and friends in close contact with Ebola patients are at the highest risk of getting sick because they may come in contact with infected blood or body fluids of sick patients.

During outbreaks of Ebola, the disease can spread quickly within healthcare settings (such as a clinic or hospital). Exposure to Ebola can occur in healthcare settings where hospital staff are not wearing appropriate protective equipment, including masks, gowns, and gloves and eye protection."

That is right from the CDC. (emphasis mine)

http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/transmission/

Why is the onus on HER to disregard all of her training and every level of authority above her?  Go ahead and keep tossing nurses and doctors under the bus and you will find some very empty clinics here soon.

If the CDC knows you shouldn't fly, go ahead and say so. If you need to self quarantine due to them not knowing SHIT while studying poop flinging monkeys, say that too. Then we can place blame where it correctly should be. But the CDC, being THE AUTHORITY on this, has the responsibility on THEM.

Her second flight was misguided, but was it assault?  Do you know your average body temp?

99.5 ain't shit for a fever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_body_temperature

Now what would YOUR mindset be if YOU were told that the protocols you were following would prevent infection?

The nurse had a TEMPERATURE of 99.5, which is barely a fever.

My rant was aimed at a post that was changed that stated she should be charged with assault for flying.
If you cannot infect anyone by being in close proximity, say an airplane, then why miss your return flight?

Or, if you CAN infect someone, then why not come out and say so?

But to hold her to a higher standard than what the CDC says is disingenuous.

Thoughtful reply {re-reply} and less bitchy than mine - props for that, for realsies.

But I think that you have to look at the totality of the circumstances.

She knew or had reason to know there was a decent chance she was infectious by the time her fever was starting.  Again, the fever suggests infection, you'd have to ask what you're infected with.

I'm not sure being symptomatic staus post treating an ebola patient {where another nurse was already infected} allows one to ethically risk infecting people on a plane, with its recycled air, given a risk/benefit analysis.  I dont know that under the circumstances, having developed a fever, she was within CDC guidelines or not.  What we do know is a nurse wearing protective gear had already become infected.

In essence, she never, ever should have taken the risk - even if you accept the idea it is hard to transmit, that's other people's lives your gambling with....   I suspect it doesn't meet the criteria for assault, but it is surely negligent.

I'm surprised that you haven't seen the involvement of the sick business in all this-- the run for profit hospitals, AMA, Big Pharma, Big Insurance, and of course gov't -are synonymous with cluster fuck-- complete hubris (I'm a doctor BS) reminds one of the old witch doctors of the Indian tribes-- The lies are just KYA policy as usual -- with the malpractice lawyers the only checks and balances being allowed in the system--

If we get out of this with our collective hides in tact it will be inspite of them -not because of them--just saying

Way too high. It's the 15th, we had Duncan on the 26th, let's just call it the 1st. So 1 leaving to 2 additional in two weeks. My guess is we'll see other nurses go in the coming weeks, but let's say it's every nurse, that's 70. They're just becoming contagious now. I doubt we'll even be at 100 on the 31st.

November and December are going to be hell, though, if it's not contained.

Yeah, safe to say the ER is going to be a fucking nightmare this winter. You'll have a bunch of hypochondriacs with the flu clogging the ER, meanwhile all the people barely surviving on minimum wage will be working while sick with the "flu" only to find out they have ebola and just infected another two dozen people.

The potential for this thing to blow up (independent of the histrionics at the moment) is way to high for my comfort.

Well if the hospital was following CDC protocols why would she need worry about flying?

I mean, Frieden said the protocols are top notch.

And you cannot catch it from someone merely by being on the same plane anyways, right Tom?

So why would she need worry about flying even with a slight fever?

Either the CDC comes out and says they have no clue about this or this is hype to scare people.

But you cannot expect to toss nurses under the bus constantly and expect them to show up for work.

Then wait and see how this progresses.

Which is it Tom?

She became symptomatic on Tuesday, and, according to Tom "the dually" Frieden, had a "fever" of 99.5 on Monday, before she boarded her flight.

This is a hitjob of the second-highest order, after Tom threw the Asian girl under the bus.

Saying that she should not have flown after being "exposed" to the virus, yet followed protocols that would avoid exposure.

The CDC also said you cannot catch this without exposure to body fluids.  She was not vomitting, bleeding, etc.

They cannot have it both ways. Either they mandate anyone who comes in contact with a patient (not exposure, contact) shelters in place in a leper colony, which would admit their protocols are not protective and a guy walking around with a pump sprayer of bleach would do better, or they retract their statement about this (and the other) nurse.

They are lying out of both sides of their mouths at this point.

Because if they excoriate this chick from flying with no symptoms other than a temp of 99.5, well then they had better shut the damn flights down out of all those shitholes where it is endemic.
Like the place where the unemployed welder decided to fly from after wheelbarrowing a pregnant girl to the clinic.

Some poor broad here is expected to give her life up to anyone who walks into a hospital but we cannot call a spade a spade when someone knowlingly brings this shit here and close down the mile wide loophole in the regs to have all the Africans come here?

If our best defense to this bug can be thwarted by someone lying on a form in some third whold shithole, well we are fucked.

"This is a hitjob of the second-highest order, after Tom threw the Asian girl under the bus."

Indeed it was.  They're walking a very tight line here.  Talking to an RN on Monday night and she was appalled that the CDC so quickly tried to deflect blame onto the nurse (now nurses).  Underpaid, underappreciated, and now the possibility of being exposed to ebola...how much longer before the RNs stop showing up for work?  What would be the point after all?

When the nurses stop showing up and the moms start keeping little Johnny and Mary home from school, then you'll know this thing has mutated into a full-blown panic.

No, not panic, realization of realities such as government leaders either stupid or willing to sacrifice everyone in the country, or both.

That was my thought as well. Until it was triple digits it was off to school.

The bigger picture is why is this on the nurse?

Did they tell her that she was going to be infected?  Stay at home afterwords? THEN it is her fault.

But if you are safe and there is no chance of contracting this why self-quarantine?

And if you cannot get it by being around her in an airplane setting, why not fly?

Is airborne transmission probable or not?

That is NOT her call.

That is another point. if that nurse had failed to make the return flight out of concern for others then would her employer cover her expenses? Would her employer pay her wage if she said she was staying put and not going to work until she was all clear. And not to be a broken record, but what's the poop on Pressure Washer man?  CDC making any attempt to find and monitor him?

(You can get whatever you would like about what I do for a living, I don't really care.)

Symptoms of Ebola are high fever, chills, aches, etc.

She had none of those symptoms when she flew.

Could she have known?  Possibly.  Back of her mind?  Maybe.
But how is it that two nurses were tossed under the bus while a guy who knowlingly exposed himself to the ebola virus was not given the same treatment?

Because Frieden is playing CYA, that's why. Can't stop Africans from flying commercial here but we can stop people domestically?
