Second Ebola-Infected Nurse Identified, Was Symptomatic With 99.5 Degree Fever While Flying

Tyler Durden's picture

Just about an hour ago, the CDC's Tom Frieden held a press conference in which he tried to diffuse the CDC's incompetence for a allowing healthcare workers who cared for the now deceased "Index Patient" Thomas Eric Duncan, to board a plane. A worker, who as was reported earlier today, was confirmed sick with the deadly virus. Still, in order to defend his agency from accusations of gross incompetence, of which it clearly is guilty, Frieden said that...

  • NEW PATIENT HADN'T BEEN BLEEDING OR VOMITING BEFORE FLIGHT

... Although, he promptly pushed the ball of blame back in her court adding that:

  • NEW PATIENT KNOWINGLY EXPOSED TO EBOLA,SHOULDNT HAVE FLOWN

But what is worse, is that as the WaPo reports the nurse had a fever of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit before boarding a passenger jet on Monday, a day before she reported symptoms of the virus and was tested, according to public health officials. "Even though there appeared to be little risk for the other people on that flight, she should not have traveled that way, Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a news conference Wednesday."

“She should not have flown on a commercial airline,” Frieden said.

The reason he said that is that since she was clearly symptomatic, she was also contagious. Which explains why the CDC is scrambling to uncover all those passengers who may have flowen with her.

Furthermore, the nurse has now been identified: "The health-care worker was not identified by public health officials, but family members told Reuters and the Dallas Morning News that her name is Amber Vinson, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. She was part of a team that had cared for Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who flew to Texas and was diagnosed with Ebola last month, during his hospitalization in Dallas. Duncan died last week. Nina Pham, a nurse who also cared for Duncan, was diagnosed with Ebola on Sunday."

And where it gets simply ridiculous is that not only did the nurse fly once, she flied a second time, this time from Cleveland to Texas on Monday.

Vinson, who flew from Dallas to Cleveland on Friday, flew back to Texas on Monday, a day after Pham was diagnosed. She reported a fever on Tuesday and was isolated and tested for Ebola.

Still, the fact that she boarded a commercial flight raises the question of how much the other 50 health-care workers who entered Duncan’s room could have traveled or moved around in recent days. The CDC recommends controlled movement on private flights or vehicles for people who may have been exposed to Ebola, Frieden said.

Meanwhile, the panic to contain the possible spread of the airborne virus is full blown: as WFAA reports, "Frontier Airlines says the plane stayed at DFW International Airport overnight, and has since been cleaned. It traveled to Cleveland on Tuesday and was cleaned again. The airline says Vinson traveled to Ohio from Dallas-Fort Worth on Flight 1142 on Oct. 10.

"The safety and security of our customers and employees is our primary concern. Frontier will continue to work closely with CDC and other governmental agencies to ensure proper protocols and procedures are being followed," the airline said in a press release.

Some other details:

Wednesday morning, Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed that Vinson lives alone without pets at The Green in the Village Apartments, in the 6000 block of Village Bend near Skillman, just north of Lovers Lane.

Police and Dallas Fire-Rescue teams were at the complex early Wednesday, cleaning common areas and knocking on doors, communicating with neighbors. Reverse 911 calls were sent out at 6:15 a.m. to people who live in the area.

"We rallied together and we decided that we needed to move quickly like we did Sunday morning," Mayor Rawlings said.

He added that the state has hired a company to come in Wednesday afternoon and clean Vinson's apartment and car.

Like Pham, Vinson had also been involved in caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who died of Ebola one week ago at Presbyterian. More than 70 hospital employees had been involved in that effort and are still being monitored.

So despite the epic Snafu that Tom Frieden has managed to achieve, and we fully expect that airplane travel will see a substantial decline until the Ebola pandemic is indeed contained, we will give him props for telling one piece of the truth this weekend, when he said that "more Ebola cases are likely going to emerge." At least this time, he was telling the truth.

Per Frontier Airlines statement:

The flight landed in Dallas/Fort Worth at 8:16 p.m. local and remained overnight at the airport having completed its flying for the day at which point the aircraft received a thorough cleaning per our normal procedures which is consistent with CDC guidelines prior to returning to service the next day.

Since I happen to fly weekly, I'm willing to bet that whatever standards there are in regards to cleaning the planes between use, don't begin to touch what is truly necessary to disinfect a plane from serious diseases.   But Ebola can only be passed by fluids, so I suppose it would have dried overnight.  No need to worry.

The airline probably rips out their seats every few years.

Each seat is the petri dish for Ebola and the next victim.

E-Z Ebola Transmission

Warm moist foam (sponge) seat cushion and couches where Ebola virus survives for hours, on a bus, bus station, plane, airport, train, train station, cab, waiting room, hospital, doctor office, restaurant.

Coupled with patient sweating and various liquid emissions (blood, fart, bowel) into the cushion seat. Then next victim sitting in warm cushion in it and touching it and wiping it.

That specific seat is probably 'contagious' for 24 hours or more...the seat and virus kept warm and moist.

Body temperature varies from person to person and may vary throughout the day for any given person.

Try this yourself: Measure your temperature when in a relaxed state. Then go out and do some yard work on a hot day for a couple of hours. I've seen my own temperature rise by more than a degree when I tried this.

A 99.5 degree temperature isn't necessarily due to fever. It depends on the individual and what they have been doing.

Some facts regarding viral infections  (I worked in medical research lab):

1. The virus will be present in body fluids LONG BEFORE there are external symptoms, including elevated temperature, headaches, vomiting, etc.

2. Body fluids includes semen & vaginal secretions.

I do not hear ANY of the so-called "experts" saying ANYTHING about sexual transmission, and particulary the sexual contacts of individuals exposed to & infected with ebola.

It is very highly likely that the two female nurses who contracted ebola from the ebola-infected invader Duncan had some kind of sexual contact after their vaginal secretions were infectious - those people must be placed in quarantine immediately.

Well now, you know, the good Rev. Jackson may have a point there.

At the very least, we could immediately ground all flights in the US as an expression of our solidarity with our brothers accross the way.

Seriously, it may not be long before that happens 'cause not enough passengers are willing to play viral Russian Roulette in an airport and plane.  Poor TSA will have to start groping each other - wait for THAT one on YouTube.

Even more seriously, at what point will I and my family decide we'll shelter in place at home?  Way too early now, but by how much?  If, When, what would that look like?

So the plane was cleaned, and then cleaned again.  That actually isn't comforting.  Did the cleaning crew know they were dealing with Ebola virus?  No one else seems to have known.  So they were touching the surfaces and all.  Were they adequately trained?  Were they wearing PPE or just your average toilet-scrubbing glove?  TPTB keep saying Ebola won't spread here because we have training and higeine and health-care facilities, but all I hear is an endless stream of fuckups.

It's an accidental admission of helplessness and incompetence, of marketing over substance.

Meanwhile, the .gov gets to overpay some contracting company to underpay Jose and Consuela to risk exposing themselves to viral contamination.

Screw cleaning, You have to decontaminate first, and really this isn't hard.

  • Push in a battery operated vaporiser with a hydrogen peroxide solution.
  • An ozone generator would also do the job.
  • Another good and cheap one is a sulphur candle. Produces SO2 which turns into sulphuric acid in water. Kills everything.

The virus needs a host? Where did you get that information? The CDC? How accurate have they been? The CDC may SAY it needs a host - but why are they sanitizing apartments, cars and airplanes?

I'm not saying the virus doesn't have the ability to survive a few days on ojects (doorknobs, surfaces etc), but the virus needs a living host to keep replicating to survive.  Unless it's mutated into some mohagany eating virus, probably be much safer to clean and disinfect a place 30 days later rather than immediately after someone has left the car or apartment.

If you haven't read the Hot Zone yet, that is a must read.  Some absolutely scary stuff in that book.  Some of the shit that happened during the Reston outbreak (monkeys only) makes today's CDC look like rocket scientists.

in the absence of clear protocols because the cdc wants to play politics with ebola, the nurse cannot be blamed when the cdc says the virus is not aerosol. according to the cdc the medical staff(or the public) had nothing to fear.

the cdc and the hospital are criminally responsible for this outbreak. blaming the med staff is stupid!

CDC gotta stop lying and evading responsibility for misinformation. Caretakers are NOT to blame (Frieden's blaming them makes him look like a POS desperately flailiing to float to the top) when they've been misinformed or mal-informed. Or NOT informed. Or NOT given the correct protective gear. Wrapping surgical tape around their necks? Please... They should have left the building the first minute management parked the ebola case in the open hallway.

Fever is a common symptom of many medical conditions:

Persistent fever that cannot be explained after repeated routine clinical inquiries is called fever of unknown origin.

You just spent a week taking care of a guy who died from ebola, at a hospital where a nurse following CDC guidelines had also caught the virus - you note a slight fever before you are about to board an aluminum tube that recycles your and everyone else's air.

If you don't think you might have ebola and be infectious - you're a literal moron.  If you do know that you do have a fair or good chance of being infectious and board - you're willing to gamble with the lives of dozens of people to get home in time for Judge Judy.

This is your defense - that they're lying about a fever in order to frame a nurse?

Seriously???

Presumably - she said she'd had a fever which is why it has been reported.   Sorry - I'll assume this was the case rather than sign on to an a priori conspiracy theory about a phantom fever.

In any event - given the fact she had cared for an ebola patient who had died, and further, that at least one other nurse was known to have become infected - basic medical caution would have counseled not potentially endangering dozens of other people during the incubation period of a disease, particularly as viral shedding could, very well, occur prior to symptoms in at least some people - as even a nurse should know.

2 points:
1. At 99.5 you probably don't even realize you have a fever.
2. I find it hard to believe that you aren't contagious well before you have a fever. The body heats up as it tries to fight off an infection, but this requires the virus to reproduce enough to require the body to work that hard to fight it off. Well before then, I suspect the infection can be spread.

According to Wikipedia (I know), 99.5 is within the normal range:

However, the fact that she took the trouble to measure it might mean she was experiencing other symptoms.

But all of those Dallas staff should have been monitored daily for Ebola (especially after Nina Pham fell ill). Once again Frieden and the CDC are behind the curve on this.

Yes l am an ass for saying it. She is more ignorant and selfish for getting on the plane and going to see her fiance. She knew her coworker was lying in that hospital with ebola. She knew she had assisted an ebola patient who had died. She knew! Noone was going to tell her she should not to fly- she had every right to go! She was entitled, and now her fiance has a lot more to worry about than the seating chart. The people who put these nurses in that room without the right equipment should all resign.   I do not blame the nurses for getting ebola.  I am just amazed at the total lack of human decency Amber displayed by flying to an from Cleveland knowing what she knew.

For my part, I'm blaming this fucking nurse - who by any argument, needlessly endangered dozens of people.

Stop the reflexive defensiveness and think like a public health official.

Would you advise someone who had cared for a guy who had died of ebola, at a hospital where another nurse following hospital protocols, such as they were, was infected, to fly on 2 flights, during the incubation period, not knoing for sure when or if infectiousness could set in?

Of course not.

While I can appreciate your position on the nursing profession, much like the fact that I personally know some cops who are very, very solid individuals, they are in a tiny minority which is shrinking by the month due to PC hiring policies.   I recently (the last 2 months) met a woman who is a certified RN that was teaching LPN wannabes who basically quit out of disgust due to her being FORCED to pass batches of failing "students" who could barely speak English.  I have personally witnessed this when I first met my wife who was thinking about becoming a nurse (bad idea) and we were interviewing all these strip mall "nursing schools" that were nothing short of LPN factories full of FOB immigrant women from Somalia mostly but a lot from Thailand, Vietnam, etc..   It is no surprise at all then to hear the last names being Vietnamese / Thai / etc.   "Never assume conspiracy when stupidity will suffice."
