A Stunned Wall Street Reacts To Today's Epic Move
The first report summarizing today's stunning market action comes from FBN's Jeremy Klein, who is out with this blurb:
In the first 15 minutes of trading the S&P 500 E-Minis traded below the S&P 500 cash index despite a fair basis, according to Bloomberg, of -6.72. This is unheard of and something I have never witnessed in my near fourteen year career on the Street. I can only conclude that many large institutions threw in the towel on the Open in wake of the dislocations in not only stocks but also treasuries.
As a result of the whiplash, Klein, who just over a month ago first, and so far only, called for a bearish correction, has turned bullish again because he now expects "a likely positive Fed meeting on October 29 to help fuel a Santa Claus rally." So, QE4 then?

"Epic moves" are expected during "unprecedented interference".
There is no market.
Precisely. Just New Bolshevik policy to leave the impression that there is still a democratic, market economy in place.
Its about time those greedy muthafuckin bastards on WS are STUNNED for once....I have been STUNNED (and mesmerized) for over the past 6 years already. I am sure the Federal Reserve Bank of NY employees are all GREEN LIGHT on their Bloomberg terminal buying stocks hands over fist right now...and even that, not much of a big rebound so far.
Rich guys havin' a bad day?
Awww.
Depends on which rich guys you're talking about. I bet quite a few in the top 0.01% are profiting handsomely from this.
When any chief strategist has only 14 years of experience that should be a sign in and of itself to run like hell the other way.
The guy thinks the market will make it to the 29th. LOL
Oh how we all long to hear the calming words of Tom Lee..."S&P to 3600"
I think Klein is right. They're probably going to come in and bail it out again near the end of October. I mean look at all the panic from just a few percent loss. I don't think the big one is coming until the end, maybe late next year.
Stunned? Only a fool didn't see this move being telegraphed... They will let the markets slide until QE4 must be implemented... QE to Infinity and Beyond!!!!
It's as likely as anything else; but we really don't know and can't place bets on it. I like the part about only a fool not seeing the downwash being telegraphed; yes, that's true; but most of these "professionals" are fools.
I for one hopes they can kick the can another 1-2 years.

Man! That video pisses me off!!
Cue the deer and donkey kong!
I'd give it 90% odds on the yes, for that.
The Fabian methodology is working. Slowly boil the peeps so they don't realize they've been cooked.
And this douche predicted this last night

Me too.
I haven't closed on my farm/REAL wealth shelter/fallback refuge yet.
For the benefit of those who are not arbs or have never traded futures, this is FREE MONEY!
To cash in on it, you would need a hedge account, and trade both cash and futures, more or less at the same time, BUT as Tyler points out, this should not happen.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning;)
lol i think about the young btfd traders suckled by the fed the last 6 years who have never seen a "market". welcome to the market noobs.
I can conclude the Obongo farce is becoming unglued.
Get it right it's Obola.
Obongo. Obola.
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?!
@Zerohedge Obola
only 14 years?
dp
no kidding... if you weren't around starting at '85 to experience '87 when you were still young and fresh, then you don't have the necessary background imho
Any wind blows someone's ship in the desired direction. I just cashed in my GBP shorts, I ended up with a pair, as I added on one; they were Dec.'14 contracts; +11,250$. I short GBP again probably in the June '15 contract when it has a rally. it's in a beautiful 45 degree down channel; this is a currency which represents a country without an economy; supported by the "financial industry?". Anyone like the under on this currency ? Bwa=ha-ha. I sure do. Ordinary people like you El Vaquero are profiting too; it's just a question of being short soon enough so it's not dangerous. Like right now; you can't enter the market on either side.
I'm not in this market because of the simple fact that I'm not an insider. I would have profited had I jumped in several months ago as I would have gone long USTs. IMO, it would be best for those who have done what I would have done to hold on for a while longer, but I have to admit, I'd be very tempted to take profits before the next FOMC minutes are released, and I wouldn't call anybody foolish or cowardly for doing the same.
T he idea that it's necessary or important to be an insider is not true. There's no such thing as a bad profit, and I like the way you think about taking profits on your, shall we say, practice, bond buy. There are a lot of markets; not just Stocks and Bonds. Sometimes just looking at the price charts is a religious experience; you can see that the herd has all done the same thing already; and you just do the opposite. What I'm trying to say is; instead of trying to predict the future, just react to the present.
It's not about " rich guys " having a bad day.
It's about cockroaches in the form of men enriching themselves dishonestly and at the expense of the most of us.
Down 300 today. Another 8,000 or so to go.
Agreed. To put it into perspective, the 1987 Black Monday 500+ point down day was the equivalent of 4,000 to 5,000 on the Dow today.
TMT - I skinned my first buck of the season last weekend and am enjoying the venison tamales.
Just wait until CBs ensure there is liquidity but no market makers assume the position and, further, there's a buyers strike.
Intel should beat the rush & repurchase the rest of its publicly traded stock, thus taking itself private.
I wonder if this could be adding to the crude oil panic.

Everyone have their DOW 15,000 hats ready??
S&P 1,500 is my medium term forecast. Let it bleed.
If it bleeds you can kill it.....
And after that -
"get to the chopper!"
Clearly not a married guy.
If it bleeds it must be ebola.
I'm hoping to dust off my vintage DOW 10,000 hat.
S&P 1000 hat is all set. Big events go where they want to go not where you expect them. We are at the start of a big event I believe.
It 's important to remember that no one reallys knows at this point.
At what point do they just give up on humpty dumpty and realize they can not put him back together again.
Just reading the headlines reminds me of watching a Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon and hearing the narrator speak...
Greece is crahing
The Bond is at the 1% handle
Marketwatch is offline.
S&P 500 is negative for the year
Second Ebola case in Texas
Meanwhile...at Central Command.
Yeah..Watching a horror episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle at that.
"Rocky...Watch me pull a rabbit out of my Hat
Buckle up my sleeve
And presto...
Ooops. Must have grabbed the wrong hat."
This is almost humorous...the keyword being almost...which means...NOT.
(You almost made it means that you did not make it.)
"Nothing up my sleeve"
Buckle up my sleeve?
Thats funny right there..
How some people get through life sometimes is beyond me...
Its like when my wife sings, " big, ole gel hadda light on."
"Umm honey? It's big old jet airliner."
/facepalm
Gonna wear out my red solo cup.
Wake me up when CNBS televises the on-air suicides of anchors and commentators... Until then: Pfffft!!!
Indeed. There is no market of price discovery. That mechanism was shut down by Fed policy, QE and direct intervention. Add robot trading 80% of shares. No market, there is no market. This is a manipulation scheme gone into chaos mode.
14 years?! And this why we still listen to Art Cashin...
"Not anymore you don't - poof!"
What comes after October 29? Halloween, where all the ghouls come out to play. Texas is getting in on the party early, with the Ebola ghouls having a field day. I can't wait to see the surprise that awaits Wall Street. Projectile vomiting on the trading floor from an infected employee? Only time will tell, in less than two weeks. Too bad I can't afford to buy an Ebola getaway in Hawaii.
the dog shakes off its fleas then returns to the pile of shit he enjoys rolling in and gets more to take their place. afterwards, he spends a good hour intermittently chasing his tail and shaking off fleas.
the mooch trusts his broker. after all he's made him a fortune so far. and darn he wasn't right saying to hold on to those equities in 2008.
who's smarter the mooch or the dog?
geez...
we never saw this coming...
We always never see what's happening, until it does.
We on ZH saw it coming. We just couldn't time it worth a shit, and a rabbit may be pulled out of the hat yet, though I have to question just how close we are to margin calls getting to the point of causing a cascade effect and ripping some fucking faces off.
ZH saw this crash coming, and 3000 other crashes that didn't happen in the last 5 years.
Ah; but we did. and "WE" knew we should short the S&P; and WE did. Right now, we just have to wait and see. If the thing gets nice and high again, you can short it again. Meanwhile, if you had a futures account, you could short Feeder Cattle, basis Apr.'15 and not have anything to worry about. The stock market is very, very, difficult compared to certain futures markets; which offer obvious opportunities every once in a while. Seriously; Zero Hedge ran a long series of articles about very significant market topping indicators; there was plenty of advance notice.
QE to the moon, Alice!

Classic post!
It was certainly one for the books.
"Say brother, can you spare a radish?"
But he said none of it would be written down.
?
I believe he meant that after the event horizon, no one will care about the caue of the crash because they will more worried about staying alive...
Well, I remember black Monday, 1987 very clearly; the Dow went down 500pts. or something; every once in a while, something interesting happens in the Stawk Market to break up the boredom. At that time, I had no quote system and had to trade by telephone with Chicago, and I had to ask 3 questions of my broker, (also a friend), before I knew what to do; in the next four days, I made enough to take off for the Winter in Mexico. It is one for the books, but they happen over and over again. the big clue is when everyone says, oh, the market is going up forever, because-----?, the Fed's printing; whatever; all the explanations are false. they always have been.
I find it at least as remarkable that Silver was selling for $4.35/oz. on some days in 2001; it's amazing the degree to which herds demonstrate herd behaviour.
Humans are not that far removed from swinging in the trees and we are a tribal species after all... Tribes normally move in unison...
Yes; and we like to pretend otherwise; which makes all this possible.
Yup. cougar_w hit the nail on the head. It's all about perspective.
Wake me when the DOW is down 5,000....
zzzzzzzz.....
I agree. Down 300 on a 16,000 DOW and they are "stunned". I'll 'buy the dip' when we have a 50% correction and suits are splattered on the ground.

I think that sums up mans inhumanity to man nicely.
I carry gum in my pocket so my money always smells freshly minted...
Very good. that's pretty funny.
This is unheard of and something I have never witnessed in my near fourteen year career on the Street.
Yes, its called war gaming the scenario.
A fourteen year career? Pardon me while I laugh. That doesn't mean anything.
Don't be too hard on him, he's only 17 years old.
14 years means the dot-com bubble was before his time.
white people problems
Listen Dealer.
That reminds me. One item on my "CHANGE" list is something I termed "IDENTIFIER".
I would like all Zero's to racially identify themselves at the end of each comment. All you have to do it put: White, Black, Yellow, etc.. OK? Easy! That way we'll "KNOW".
I'll start:
Indian.
You're not an Indian, you're an imposter.
Its not like you shake your head everytime you post something?!
and either a troll or a bit of a noob in search of a better suited blog for him. developing a race fetish here on ZH? me? Listen, I'm as white european you can possibly be. with pedigree, whistles and bells

Are you Human-American?
Are you a white Indian?
Or a black Indian.
Saw this on an IQ test. Which doesn't fit? White, Black, Indian, Yellow.
Doesn't fit into what?
Listen Bank.
Exactly! This Glock guy is off his rocker.
Is that native or real Indian?
At my son's cub scout meeting they announced we were going to have a real Indian for the advancement ceremony. I immediately got the hilarious image of a guy from India with the really bad accent. Obviously that wasn't what they meant.
WASP
"Recovering"alcoholic Rastafari and sometimes homoeopathic (classical) patient.
Casino or Slurpee?
Feather or dot?
Lizzard.

Kinda like my wife whining that our deck (that she had to have) is so big that it's too much work to paint.Gotta chuckle at how hard some people have it.
I stuck to my guns and made her paint it herself. Maybe next time she'll heed my advice about building McMansion sized crap.
"something I have never witnessed in my near fourteen year career on the Street."
You'll see a lot of shit you've never seen before if you stick around, kid.
Truth!
#troof
14 years aint shit
i've got positions that are older than this guy's career on wall street... and I'm not even that old.
and he's the chief trader? all he knows is the fed. the fed has made him wealthy
Very good. Yeah; it's kind of ridiculous, isn't it? Big whoop, his 14yr. career.
It's scary to realize that there's professionals on the Street with no experience prior to Y2k, yet are allowed to spout conventional wisdom as if they know something.
Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" is certainly applicable here.
Art Cashin probably has grand-kids older than this guy....
Absolutely....Santa Claus.....Fed.....Got It!!
Buy The Dip!
Kevin Henry missed his bus, now he wants a coffee break....
"markets"... LMFAO!!!
Just hope his zipper doesn't get stuck when he goes to toilet!
The entire market is dependent on counterfeiting to keep it from crashing....
Why would you use the term "market?" All that does is to provide cover for the likes of Jamie, Lloyd and the Teppers of the world.
---> Crash in preparation (H) for rise prior to elections
---> Crash is the real McCoy
C) Massive knee-jerk reactions, cuz entropy is a bitch.
14 years experience and he is the big swinging dick? At most real jobs, 14 years you are still blowing the knowledgable people on command. And most of you still respect the profession of paper hussler. Amazing!
yeah, ... and last go round (2008/2009) still bringing coffee/donuts to office
In 2014 do "Large institutions" even have trading floors anymore or just algos?
They have traders.
Listen,
Why's everyone bitching? Volatility == Opportunity!
Happy Halloween!
Continuation gap or exhaustion gap, that is the question.
well jump fucker, look over there a window.
Stunned Wallstreet...... LOl.... the crooks knew exactly what was going to happen.
This time was different.
No; it wasn't. it's like a stuck record; over and over again. 1987;2000;2008-- what's different? some stupid idea about mini-e futures, ? The stock market certainly didn't behave differently.
I'm seeing more and more trucks at my Local Coin Store.
And many of them are towing boats.
BTFD
Listen.
Ah yes, good old USSA-IRS form 8300. Don't forget to let your American government know how much gold you bought, they'll need it soon.
Boating accident is known fraud and you filthy cheating Americans will be jailed as tax cheats.
Don't do it!
I lost mine in a poker game with a fucking Indian.
LOL. That's the Indian with a dot, not a feather, right?

JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP
14yr career?!! What college was he attending during the 9/11? You have to be kidding, is this guy old enough to shave, yet?!!
