Apart From Ebola (And Inflation), These Are The Greatest Dangers To The World

Tyler Durden's picture

With 80% of Americans concerned about Ebola, and Europe's most worrisome 'factor' is rising prices (yes, rising, despite central banks' deflation ogre fears), we thought it might be useful to remember just what other concerns the world has. From 'inequality' to 'religious hatred' and from 'nuclear weapons' to 'pollution', there is a lot of diverse fears around the world.

Americans are focused on Ebola (for now)

...nearly 80 percent were concerned about the Ebola outbreak, with 41 percent saying they were "very concerned" and 36 percent "somewhat concerned."

*  *  *

Europe's biggest fears - rising prices!

So, paradoxically to "fix" Europe, Mario Draghi is desperately trying to make Europe's biggest problem even worse.

*  *  *

Let's see what the rest of the world is worried about... (via The Washington Post)

As panic over the spread of Ebola persists, a new report from the Pew Global Attitudes Project offers a bit of perspective. It explores the larger threats people in different regions of the world fear. Unsurprisingly, concerns vary across continents.

Respondents to the poll were asked to cite what they believed was the top global threat out of five categories. The 48,643 respondents came from 44 countries.

12:16 p.m. EDT, October 16, 2014

Brad Estep stood in a line of dozens of people Wednesday morning outside the Department of Social Services office in Glen Burnie after being denied food and healthcare assistance this month without explanation.

Most were turned away because of a limit of 25 customer inquiries the office can handle per day.

The Pasadena resident received a letter stating that $430 of his planned monthly income through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps, would end Sept. 30. It has left him without food for his two daughters and without antibiotics prescribed to treat his colitis.

"I depend on this as a part of my income and a part of my budget every month," he said. "I don't now know what I'm going to do to come up with another $400."

Brian Schleter, spokesman for the Department of Human Resources, could not say why so many people were seeking assistance at the Glen Burnie office this week but said it did not appear to be the result of a system error.

He said the department was taking steps to address the wait time.

"Additional staff have been assigned to assist, and we will continue working diligently to satisfactorily address all customer needs," he wrote in an email.

Glen Burnie has the highest concentration of families receiving food stamps in Anne Arundel County. The amount of food stamps an individual qualifies for is adjusted yearly, with new standards taking effect Oct. 1, according to the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services website.

The supervisor of the Glen Burnie office declined to comment Wednesday, and a reporter was asked to leave. Marcia Kennai, county director of social services, could be reached for comment.

A single working father, Estep said he needs the assistance to feed his daughters. He said the problem also affected his healthcare coverage, leaving him unable to get the antibiotics he needs and flu shots for his two girls.

"Now on my third day of work that I've missed and my boss won't let me come back to work until I'm on the antibiotic and not contagious," he said.

Although Caitlyn Raiford of Pasadena is less than three weeks from her due date, she was waiting in line Wednesday.

She got the same letter Estep did, saying her food stamps were ending. An employee at the Glen Burnie office told her she would have to come back another day, that only 25 requests for help are handled each day.

Raiford said she doesn't have much food left at home.

"I don't think eggs and cheese cut it right before I give birth," she said.

Her letter came after the staff in Glen Burnie told her that she would be getting additional assistance because of her baby. A waitress, she is unable to work at this stage of her pregnancy.

Estep didn't receive his letter until Friday, and had to return all the food from his basket during a recent shopping trip because his SNAP benefits were denied.

"I have no clue how long this is going to take," he said. "It's not just me, there were hundreds of people down there with the same letter."

What competent doctor prescribes antibiotics for an extended period, when doing so contributes to the development of superbugs and complicates existing problems in Mr. Estep's gut?

What is Estep doing to educate himself, stretch his dollars and seek alternate medical advice?  That woman Raiford appears to be bringing a child into the world without adquate means to support it.  Where's the father?  Where is her family?  What is her strategy going forward?

Very true, but .01% of us are 50% more equal than 99.99% of the population.  I don't think that has anything to do with abilities, intellect, ambition, etc.  Very few people really think that everyone should be equal.  The vast majority just want a reasonable chance at not living in serfdom.  But there's always some guy who equates that with Marxism.

inequality per se is not a problem.

excessive inequality brought about not by one's own virtues, but rather through crony capitalism and central planning / central banking, is a huge problem. the higher the gini coefficient, the closer a society is to collapse.

the gini is almost out of the bottle, now.

In the UK, it remains a curious mystery that Immigration scores only 6% and Terrorism scores as low as 1% as priority items on the public's mind.

Yet the Conservative Coalition government spend more time blathering about these two issues than almost any other. MSM dutifully follows their lead. And of course the Met Police/MI5 spend a lot of time arresting people for terrorism related offences and then making public announcements of them. Not too many ever get charged or convicted. A few cases have been thrown out of court when it is realised that the so-called "plot" alleged by the Met Police was completely fabricated.

By contrast, whereas Inflation/rising prices scores highest with 34% of people concerned about it, we rarely hear a murmur about it from either the government or MSM, except for a few moments each month when the latest fantasy figures are released.

We have got to the point where political elites choose their own topics to ratchet up and scare people about purely for their own advantage whilst ignoring the real concerns that people have.

curious mistery indeed. note, though, that the PEW poll scores 39% in the UK regarding "religious and ethnic hatred"

note, too, that part of the British political elite - that part connected to the conservative backbenchers wawering towards UKIP, is ramping up it's anti-EU propaganda, with very, very interesting comments towards the businesses that might - gasp! - vent their pro-EU interests in public

from the FT: "In a surprising intervention for a former Tory cabinet minister, the rightwing eurosceptic John Redwood warned pro-European businesses to “keep out” of the debate in a future referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, saying anti-Europeans would “make life difficult for them” and that it could be “destabilising” for their business. He added that executives could be “forced out of their jobs” in the backlash against their “foolish statements”. Later he said his comments should be seen simply as “friendly advice”."

"Roland Rudd, chairman of Business for New Europe, said the “appalling” threats were unacceptable. “Business will not be intimidated by threats from extreme eurosceptics and will continue to speak out without fear or favour,” he said."

"The intervention by Mr Redwood was compared to similar remarks by Jim Sillars, a senior Scottish National party figure, who warned of a "day of reckoning" for Scottish companies who backed the Better Together campaign ahead of the recent referendum on independence."

Meanwhile, people in the UK are still the least informed citizens of any EU country about anything that has to do with the EU itself. In part because of Britons' global/local focus, and in part thanks to great efforts by the Torys and a reticence of the pro-european siders to even... talk

And this, my friend, is damn scary. I know you have an allergy for socialists, and yes, in the UK support for the EU is bigger on the side of the LibDems and Labour, yet I do think you don't find it a terribly good idea to have them too scared to engage the political debate

UK would love the EU if Brussels was right in the City of London or perhaps Common Wealth of European States with Queen as the Head would go down quite nicely with the British. :)

Ghordius, been wanting to ask you since I cant fail to notice your passion for EU with also some Libertarian and Anarchistic leanings:

- Do you think the Barroso, Van Rompuy, Ashton are as dishonest and corrupt as they are alleged to be and you would stilll be in favour of an institution which has such characters on the forefront?

- Regarding the bailout of PIIGS and ECB turning blind eye (or not taking preventive actions) to some banks profiting off the miseries of the people, Allied Irish bank bailout e.g. and especially this. You dont think EU is another money making and Control tool of the bankers?

- Unless you are NOT Libertarian or Anarchist, how does your acceptance of EU beaucracy fits with it?

(Apologies if I have understood you or your views incorrectly)

"Religious and ethnic hatred" is not really the same thing as "terrorism", although it can lead to it by either side as we've seen in the UK (violence by both sides towards the other side).

Redwood: Well, I think he has an underlying point although he never was the best person at expressing his views. I also have a concern when the corporate sector conduct themselves as though they are individual people and try to influence government policy. Since corporates do not have the vote, they should keep their mouth closed and only indulge themselves as private individuals like the rest of us. Otherwise we will quickly discover that government policy is being dictated by them which is moving towards corporatism as we see in the US.

"I know you have an allergy for socialists"

Indeed. It's not surprising that both UK's Labour & LibDems support the EU. Clegg used to work there and may well go back when his party support collapses next year and Labour see it as an opportunity to expand their aims for a One World Socialist State. That makes me shudder.

EBOLA Biological Warfare

Horowitz (1998) was deliberate and unambiguous when he explained the threat of new diseases in his text, Emerging Viruses: AIDS and Ebola – Nature, Accident or Intentional. In his interview with Dr. Robert Strecker in Chapter 7, the discussion, in the early 1970s, made it obvious that the war was between countries that hosted the KGB and the CIA, and the ‘manufacture’ of ‘AIDS-Like Viruses’ was clearly directed at the other. In passing during the Interview, mention was made of Fort Detrick, “the Ebola Building,” and ‘a lot of problems with strange illnesses’ in “Frederick [Maryland].” By Chapter 12 in his text, he had confirmed the existence of an American Military-Medical-Industry that conducts biological weapons tests under the guise of administering vaccinations to control diseases and improve the health of “black Africans overseas.” The book is an excellent text, and all leaders plus anyone who has interest in science, health, people, and intrigue should study it. I am amazed that African leaders are making no acknowledgements or reference to these documents.

Bioweapon EBOLA Unleashed On Liberia Has Chinese Military Found the Cure for Ebola?

A Chinese pharmaceutical company working with Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS), a PLA-affiliated research institution, claims to have developed an experimental cure for the Ebola virus.

According to Sihuan managementthe drug has been in development for five years and has been effective in animal tests conducted on mice. As of yet, there have been no clinical trials of JK-05; the company plans to test the drug out first on Chinese nationals who have contracted the disease in Africa. Tests on African nationals would require international approval.
