The Ebola Effect Arrives: Half Of Americans Will Avoid International Air Travel Out Of Ebola Fears

Tyler Durden's picture

Remember when Obama said "Putin was isolated", despite the Russian having the explicit support of the BRIC nations, and thus at least half of the world's population? Well, as irony would always have it with this particular US president, the tables have promptly turned, and paradoxically where ISIS failed to "terrorize" Americans into a state of paralyzed daze, the West African virus has succeeded in isolating none other than America, and as a brand new Reuters poll reveals, nearly half of Americans are so concerned about the Ebola outbreak that they are avoiding international air travel!

In other words, global trade, commerce and simply transit, already declining thanks to the global depression rematerializing now that the Fed's latest placebo round has worn off, are about to slam into a brick wall.

The poll results come as health officials said the second nurse infected at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas had flown from Ohio to Texas with a slight fever the day before she was diagnosed.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which surveyed 1,577 Americans 18 or older online, found nearly 80 percent were concerned about the Ebola outbreak, with 41 percent saying they were "very concerned" and 36 percent "somewhat concerned."

And while the one thing that is certain to provoke an even greater popular panic at the invisible terror, is at least one more Ebola case developing on US soil, the whistleblowing admission by another nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian will hardly boost America's confidence in the way the Ebola crisis is being handled.

NBC Chicago reports that a Dallas nurse who cared for a co-worker who contracted the Ebola virus at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital said the facility was unprepared to fight the disease and she would “do anything” to avoid being treated there if she were ever to fall ill with the potentially deadly virus.

“I can no longer defend my hospital,” Briana Aguirre said Thursday on NBC's “Today" show.

Aguirre claims that before Thomas Eric Duncan arrived at Texas Health Presbyterian nursing staff had not been trained in how to treat an Ebola patient beyond being offered an “optional seminar.”

Aguirre did not treat Duncan, who died on Oct. 8. But she said that co-workers told her that he was put in an area with up to seven other patients and it took three hours before the hospital first contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She called the situation a "chaotic scene."

"Our infectious disease department was contacted to ask, what is our protocol. And their answer was, we don’t know. We’re going to have to call you back,” she said.

“We never talked about Ebola and we probably should have,” Aguirre said, adding that staff was “never told what to look for.”

Well, at least Obama will be kind enough to tell the thousands of reservists he just announced he will be mobiziling by executive order and sending to west Africa precisely what it is they should look for: a virus. One which they should preferably shoot on site.

If Europe gets multiple clusters of Ebola outbreaks, I think the same general thing would happen over there.  The whole world will travel less...

Business worldwide would definitely slow down.

Wow, and Algore wet-dream.  Think of all the carbon that won't be pumped into the very air that the Goremeister is buzzing through in his private jet to the next speech explaining how the world's oceans are going to boil away (despite warming being stopped for nearly two decades).

Speaking of Air Travel, I'm kind of reluctant to fly back to the US these days.

I was supposed to fly to Dallas yesterday. Wife wanted me to stay. No way; not based on current stats. (In a month that story could change radically.) The issue was resolved because USAirways (Used Air) is so bad they couldn't get me through the first leg of my journey. Rumors of a functional airport in Philadelphia seem wildly speculative at this point.

It might be a very interesting Christmas. One business in Cleveland that Amber visited was a bridal outfitter, probably a small business and "voluntarily" closed due to potential health concerns. Voluntarily? Yea right. Imagine being the owner..the employees that NEED that paycheck. Think others will visit that store ever again in the near future? Think about that scenario happeing X 10...x100 all over the US. I don't even want to mention health care workers.

Pleasant dreams.

Now you assume as a extra.

And it's not like there's a lot of Americans travelling ouside of America anyway.
So... With or without Ebola... Not a lot where planning to anyway. So the answer was easy.

A quarter of America likely never travels more than 100 miles from their place of birth.

Another quarter might have been overseas a handful of time for a cruise or a war or a missions trip, but the vast majority just work and then go home to drink a beer or nine.

I just saw a video of how CNN used actors in some of its on site west Africa footage. It was comical and disgusting. In one shot, a perfectly healthy kid is walking along and then is instructed to lie on the ground like he's sick. Crisis acting.

What are tptb up to? A group of locals there are adamant that the only ones who came down with Ebola recieved shots. Perhaps health care responders there were given the disease through routine immunization when they arrived. Wtf is the real deal here? Is our govt out for forced immunization of some kind?

Oh ffs...

This country is big enough that you can travel extensively and not need a passport. It's not like the US is a tiny country with only a few attractions. Europeans travel because mostly their countries are only a few hours wide and it's like going to the state next door.

Here comes the market crash!!!

Or maybe just moar QE, but to another level ^^

The Fed has taken crash out of the equation just as long as Ebola stays in check. Bare in mind there is no real stock market any longer as that ended a few years ago. The market has become a show where the outcome is already known each day before it begins. They will print to whatever level it takes and will buy whatever amount of stock it takes to make it look like everything is fine.

QE has and never will end in one form or another. What is the difference if every day the Fed or their primaries buy stock instead of bonds to keep current price levels elevated.

I panicked a couplke months ago when I started tracking all this crap (July-August)

Now?  I'm resigned to the end of the current era of civilization (even a 20% population drop will do it) and planning on having a really good time while it crashes.

401K, retirement, pensions?   Don't make me laugh.

Fear the fake Ebola epidemic, and not the criminal uniformed goons with guns epidemic.

And some say that Ebola turns you into "jelly."

This is what uniformed goons turn you into: http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/kelly-thomas-beating-fullerton-pol...

An American, not US subject.

"Government, being nothing more than a criminal syndicate of theft and violence, can produce nothing more than poverty, misery, death and lies. Therefore they are either lying about Ebola or can't do anything less than make it worse."

Moving people means "move yourself" now I imagine.
Moving at all seems like a bad idea right now though.

I say again "if this is an attack it's a good one." Obviously I don't mean that in a moral or "anti American" sense. Just saying we're acting like the Keystone Cops in response.

Irrelevant. Stupid and irrelevant. Why? Still no entry ban for travellers from Africa. Current protocols, procedures, and screening guidelines are comically insufficient. On the containment-and-prevention side, we have made no progress over 14th century Europeans - they at least made efforts to quarantine ALL travellers outside the city gates.

I suppose governments refuse to ban flights from West Africa so they can't be accused of prejudice. Or maybe because they fear what effect it might have on the airlines, or commerce in general. Well guess what boys. Here comes your unintended consequences.

When you start to ooze from every orifice, try to make time to visit Wall Street before collapsing in a puddle of disintegrating goo - it's beautiful this time of year.  But always remember, first call the CDC and get their 'ok' to fly.  As long as you're not actually dead when you call, it appears they'll approve your travel.  Better to get the approval up front than be disappointed at the gate.

Using SARs as an example, in a few weeks/months some people will be able to get some really low long term rental rates for high end apartments.

So I guess if you follow that, you should move to Ebola epicenters in the US to get the best rates.

OK, maybe not...

In Hong Kong during SARs, ultra high end hi rise condos rent was cut in half.  Multi year leases could mean real savings.

Not that that will happen here as that was very localized
