Phoenix Air has released a statement explaining why the now infamous non-HazMat-wearing 'clipboard man' seen in close proximity to Dallas Ebola patient Amber Vinson (while the rest of the members of staff are fully protected) was unprotected... and it will blow your mind.

Phoenix Air responds (via ABC News)...
The airline confirmed to ABC News that the man was their medical protocol supervisor who was purposefully not wearing protective gear.
"Our medical professionals in the biohazard suits have limited vision and mobility and it is the protocol supervisor’s job to watch each person carefully and give them verbal directions to insure no close contact protocols are violated," a spokesperson from Phoenix Air told ABC News said.
"There is absolutely no problem with this and in fact insures an even higher level of safety for all involved," the spokesperson said.

Is there some requirement to check one's brain at the door on this site? Everyone here does remember how ebola is spread. That dude was not in a situation where he would come into contact with body fluids. It also helps to have someone working in a hands off supervisory position. I have been in hundreds (well actually thousands) of medical emergency situtations and there is nothing wrong with what is transpiring in those images.

Only thing good about this is that the patient, Ms. Vinson, had on a Hazmat suit of her own for self containment. But that's not good enough at this stage of the outbreak because what are needed are demonstrably good examples of what to do to contain this thing.
Saying the suits suck because they impair vision and you can't see out of them was a very revealing, naive and stupid thing for them to say.
It reveals that non of these front-line people are experienced in using Hazmats on their own, don't know what they're doing, and the clipboard guy is their on-the-job babysitter and trainer.... Abandon all hope!
If you pick up a copy of "The Hot Zone" you'll see that the suits' tradeoffs and limitations are discussed in great detail. The faceplates fog, the material can easily catch on things in the environment and rip, it's very easy to cut one with a sharp object of one kind or another, or to have the powered respirator run out of juice.

I don't know about this ebola business. It could be a false flag operation, a deliberate thinning of the herd or a natural virus, but right now I just don't know. The other day I rode an F line streetcar in San Francisco that was packed solid with tourists from around the world. It was so packed that my girlfriend and I had a great deal of difficulty getting off the streetcar at our stop. NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Hospital officials in Connecticut have quarantined a patient with Ebola-like symptoms as a precaution, CBS Hartford affiliate WFSB-TV reports.
Officials said that the patient was admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
They confirmed that the patient was one of the Yale University student researchers that helped monitor the Ebola outbreak in Liberia last month. That student was one of two who had been tested in Liberia. Both had negative results. They came back home on Oct. 11.

This is absolutely idiotic. But I think it was even more idiotic for the CDC to tell Amber Vinson it was OK to fly in the first place.
That said, Clipboard man and the other passengers on the jet are probably OK. Ebola doesn't seem to be all that contagious until it gets to the later stages. But I think it is entirely possible that more of the hospital workers might come down with it in the next few days.

What no one is saying -- Ebola's natural reservoir remains unknown. No one knows where it comes from. We did not have the Ebola virus on this continent other than in tightly controlled research environments. Now, we have the Ebola virus here, out in the open. Maybe it lives in the flies that fed on the dead guy's barf left on the sidewalk. Maybe it lives in the squirrels running around the apartment complex. Maybe it lives in vegetation until an animal eats the vegetable then someone eats the animal. No one knows where Ebola lives outside of people so we can never be sure it is eradicated. I would not be surprised if there is a spontaneous outbreak of Ebola in Dallas some years down the road.

Regarding "ebola is a hoax" theories--two things to remember. The first is which was the first story that spread the paranoia--that is the one that might be an act. The secondary stories due to the spreading of paranoia (i.e an airplane being detained at Las Vegas McCarren with a mother and sick child recently from West Africa) are probably 100% true. So you have to look at the intitial story.
Let's say you're sick. You don't know what you're sick with until doctors identify it for you. It's very very easy to make 2 or even 1 person in a key position of power tell a lie that is then parroted around as absolute truth. A lot of people in West Africa get sick and die of stuff everyday, no doubt. Easy to pile on numbers, show stock footage of sick people in a faraway hospital as a newslady layers on about shocking statistics of how many people will die or could die or something. All theater.
Do I believe everything is a conspiracy? Nope. I doubt every movie stars death was the result of political retaliation, because that's dumb--people (movie stars included) die of something eventually, just like the rest of us. But I do not automatically believe what somebody tells me unless I have seen it with my own eyes.
