Sweden Deploys Army, Air Force, Navy Near Stockholm Over Reported Damaged Russian Sub; Moscow Denies

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the weekend, while the world was focusing on the threat of Ebola contagion in the US and around the globe, Sweden's otherwise sleepy capital Stockholm found itself the location of a blitz military operation involving the Swedish Armed Forces, Navy, Army and Air Force, when late on Saturday, Swedish armed forces stepped up an operation -- involving more than 200 men, stealth ships, minesweepers and helicopters -- in an area about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the Swedish capital. The operation was initiated on Friday after the armed forces said they had been informed of a "man made object" in the water.

According to the Local.se, officials denied they were "submarine hunting," calling the mobilisation- one of the biggest, barring purely training exercises, since the Cold War - an "intelligence operation".

Also on Saturday evening, Director Communication and Public Affairs of the Swedish Armed Forces Erik Lagersten said: "At the moment we are conducting an intelligence operation in the archipelago of Stockholm with optical reconnaissance as well as with naval vessels equipped with qualified underwater sensors. The units activated are from all branches of the Swedish Armed Forces, the Navy, the Army and the Air Force."

And while it has been neither confirmed nor denied, a media report by the respected Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, put the blame for the rapid mobilization on what it said was a damaged Russian submarine located just off Stockholm. The report said that Swedish military intelligence had intercepted radio signals between an area off the coast of Stockholm and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad -- home to much of Russia's Baltic Sea naval fleet.

Svenska Dagbladet reported that the sighting was at an island in Kanholmsfjärden, an inlet located just over 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the city centre.

According to Dagbladet, a witness to the start of the military operation, Robert Eriksson, said he was out in a boat fishing off the island of Skarpö at around 4pm.  "The coast guard came in over the inlet with an airplane and flew round and round for a long time," he told news agency TT.  Soon the navy also showed up.

"There was a large military boat that stayed further south on Kanholmsfjärden," he said.

Stefan Ring, a military strategy expert at the Swedish National Defence College (Försvarshögskolan) said it was important to send a signal.  "It's important in this kind of situation, when we're noticing an escalation in the Baltic Sea, to signal very clearly that we're on top of the situation," he said.

"If one were not to do anything and it turned out to actually be something, then that's a signal to an opponent that this isn't all that important to us."

More from The Local:

"It was transmitted on a special frequency, used by Russia in emergency situations," the newspaper wrote, citing Swedish military sources involved in the search.

Sweden's armed forces remained tight-lipped, but did say its focus was on "underwater activities."

"The Swedish Armed Forces are not in a position to deny or verify media news or speculations recently published about a missing foreign submarine," spokesman Erik Lagersten said.

"At the moment we are conducting an intelligence operation in the archipelago of Stockholm with optical reconnaissance as well as with naval vessels equipped with qualified underwater sensors... to establish if there are or has been foreign underwater activities in the area."

Anonymous military sources told Svenska Dagbladet that the emergency signal in Russian was intercepted on Thursday evening, and that further encrypted signals were sent on Friday after Swedish armed forces began combing the area.

Over 14 years ago, in August 2000 the Kursk, a Russian nuclear submarine, sank in the Barents Sea killing the entire crew of 118. Russian authorities were later criticised for refusing international assistance and for misleading the public about the pace of their failed rescue operation. In recent months, Sweden has reportedly seen an uptick in Baltic Sea manoeuvres by the Russian air force. In one incident in September, two SU-24 fighter-bombers allegedly entered Swedish airspace in what then Foreign Minister Carl Bildt at the time called "the most serious aerial incursion by the Russians" in almost a decade.

During the 1980s and early 90s the then-neutral -- and now non-aligned -- Nordic country was regularly on alert following Russian submarine sightings, including one notable case in 1981 when a Soviet U-boat ran aground several miles from one of Sweden's largest naval base.

Considering that the west has been all too eager to unleash Cold War 2.0, it would not be surprising if Russia has decided to pay Stockholm a visit or two.

Meanwhile, Russia denied everything. From Tass:

There have not been any emergency situations with Russian military vessels, spokesman for the Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday.

“Russia’s submarines, like the surface ships, have been following their tasks in the world’s oceans according to the plan,” he said. “There have not been any emergencies or accidents with the Russian military vessels.”

If not Russia, then who? Only nine countries have access to the Baltic Sea: besides Sweden, they are Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Finland and Estonia. Only Germany, Poland, Russia and Switzerland have own fleets of submarines.

According to at least one source, the Russian submarine in question is the Losharik, i.e., "Project 210" aka the AC-12, nuclear submarine, which came online in 2003, after the Kursk incident.

And then there is this:

So did a Russian sub merely get lost, or was this just another transit route as Russia scrambles to weaponize the Arctic and defend its numerous oil and gas fields located there?

It may surprise you that the CIA has people who know how to speak Russia.

Even you can send an encrypted message, anyone can.

Of course, that assumes a any message, by anyone, was actually sent.  If the CIA says they intercepted a message by Syria regarding a pending WMD attack are you going to simply believe them?

So, if another country sends an encrypted message in english is that grounds for them to say it was the US?

Ok, since you are taking the approach that if no one can prove Russia "did not" then it must be true, lets come up with a simular approach.

Since we established that any country could have sailed a sub into that location, and that no one has proof or evidence there is even a sub there and all you are doing is throwing out "what ifs" with no reliable evidence - Then how about there is a sub there but it is not Russian and Russia is keeping a ship at that location to be there when it is forced to surface to document the actions of the US or other such country.

Funny thing about the purported messages.  It is claimed to be a secret mission by Russia - but the initial message is sent over an open channel with no encryption and directed to a location within Russia (not a low power call to a local Russian "mothership" ship ).  If that is true the commander of such a sub violated protocol and sent the message to people not close enough to help.

"Good luck in getting from the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic, w/o going through Danish waters"

Ahem....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Convention_on_the_Law_of_the...
Territorial waters
Out to 12 nautical miles (22 kilometres; 14 miles) from the baseline, the coastal state is free to set laws, regulate use, and use any resource. Vessels were given the right of innocent passage through any territorial waters, with strategic straits allowing the passage of military craft as transit passage, in that naval vessels are allowed to maintain postures that would be illegal in territorial waters. "Innocent passage" is defined by the convention as passing through waters in an expeditious and continuous manner, which is not "prejudicial to the peace, good order or the security" of the coastal state. Fishing, polluting, weapons practice, and spying are not "innocent", and submarines and other underwater vehicles are required to navigate on the surface and to show their flag. Nations can also temporarily suspend innocent passage in specific areas of their territorial seas, if doing so is essential for the protection of its security.

One yet unidentified source claims to have heard a disteress call in Russian.

So the MSMM (mainstream mental midgets) who knew that Assad had ordered the CW weapons attack, that Viktor Yushchencko had ordered rooftop snipers to fire on the crowd (but somehow forgot to order water cannons and the army to dispurse the mob) and that the Chinese and Russians are hacking into the computers of the West without telling us what was hacked and how they know it was the Russians and the Chinese who are doing the hacking.

It's probably time for some tension between the North and South Korea.

Wait I've heard this one before.

Following the stranding of a Soviet Whiskey-class submarine in 1981
on the Swedish archipelago, a series of massive submarine intrusions
took place within Swedish waters – later described as the first Soviet
military initiative against a west European state since the Berlin crisis.
After a dramatic submarine hunt in 1982, a Swedish parliamentary
commission stated that six Soviet submarines had ‘played their games’
in the Stockholm archipelago – one even in Stockholm harbour. The
Swedish government protested strongly to the Soviet Union, and rela-
tions between the two countries were icy for several years afterwards.
Today, however, the evidence for these alleged Soviet intrusions
appears to have been manipulated or simply invented. Classified doc-
uments and interviews cited in this book point to covert Western
rather than Soviet activity. This is backed up by former US Secretary
of Defense Caspar Weinberger, who stated, in a Swedish television
interview reproduced in this book, that Western ‘testing’ operations
were carried out regularly in Swedish waters, and by former British
Navy Minister Sir Keith Speed, who has confirmed the existence of
such operations. Royal Navy submarine captains have also admitted to
having carried out top-secret operations in the Swedish archipelago.

It is not even a year since the mob in the Maidan brought down the Ukrainian govt., and now John O. Brennan is trying to pull a similar stunt in Hong Kong.

In China's case, Brennan is trying to embarrass China into using the Army to break up the protesters, so the US and the UK can sit at the bar at the Country Club of Nations, their hands dripping with blood, while they point out how uncivilized Beijing is.

The Swedish Armed Forces have just denied both that there were any Russian distress transmissions or any other transmissions - in fact, they've said tonight in a press conference approximately 90 minutes ago that they have no evidence for anything, no submarines, not any evidence of where any intrusion came from, etcetera.

Svenska Dagbladet is globalist mouthpiece, while better than most other Swedish media, it is still quite unreliable.

We have a new government in Sweden, and given all the funding cuts over the last year and that this new government is filled with communist fools, this is probably a military psy-op to try and increase funding for the military. Seriously, you've no idea what a joke our armed forces have become.

To viedoklis_lv:

From your previous posts, it is quite obvious that you are a Baltic state (Latvia?) or Ukrainian troll. Who gives a fuck about the Russian ship going in circles? I don't. Because Swedish ships are regularly outside of Kaliningrad, eavesdropping. That's what militaries do in peace time - they conduct surveillance and play games with each other.

Hey, there's now totally unconfirmed Twitter spam about a Russian Akula class having actually sunk in the Stockholm archipelago - originating from another one of the crazy "Slava Ukraine"-Ukro-Nazi fools. Why don't you start a new comment thread where you declare this "fact"? Knock yourself out...

Amazing... The wine-sniffing, cheese-nibbling girlyman Euroweenies freak out like PMS'ing women at the mere thought that big bad Vlad might have a sub off one of their coasts.   They are such lame pussies, who are scared of their own shadows, that they may deserve to be bred into extinction by the hordes of Muslims and Africans who are overruning their piss-ant, debt-ridden, inbred little shitstain countries.

Hell, one has to wonder what the Euroweenies will do if Vlad ever does actually flick a booger or fart their way.

Ha ha! Come and get us then, descendats of the leftovers of the nations you look down upon. Nobody wants to be american. All i hear when I'm in the states is "i'm half german" or "I'm proud to be Irish". if you are black, you are "african american", and even the original population wants to be called "native american". We are not afraid of muslims or africans. We are afraid of becoming as ignorant and stupid as the average US citizen. But that will never happen. The survival of the fittest will take care of that problem since we will rather breed with anyone else than obese, lazy, unemployed, food stamp collecting half morons who can't point out their own country on a world map.

Great are the Greek Keftedes , more taste and substance, Small fried (keftedakia) with Alcoholic drinks or Bigger ones in white or red sauce similar to the Swedish ones. On a small Greek Island I found some great meat balls (keftedes) and when  I went back for more I was told they were gone. A swedish family had wiped them out and a large teenager was there for seconds before me.

"the swedish armed forces"... hahahah

The few people who would have been patriotic enough to risk their lifes defending Sweden got bullied away from the country long time ago. Now that the Swedish military is almost totally disarmed its only good enough to assist the more and more helpless police in bullying the taxpayers. Going after real criminals is way to dangerous to be any fun for the hipsters, anti racists and enivorment defence troops now that they consist of 95% immigratants. Both fysical danger and then of course the risk to offend them in some religious or racial way since they have, eh, the right skincolor...

The thing that is interesting is that when the Kursk sank, they didn't deny it sunk, just that they didn't know after till 6 hours and the Buoy did not deploy.  In this case, it would be extremely hard for Russia to hide a submarine, after knowning Sweden is searching high and low for it, if it is damage and thus saying it didn't sink or nothing happened to this supposed sub, is giving me the thought that nothing happened.  As well, how did they pick up transmitions when all military transmitions are encrypted?  The thing is, both in Finland and Sweden, there is huge NATO push for these nations and when the people said no, there is a larger number of "incidences" where Russian's are supposedly involved in going into their airspace or territorial waters.

Also, why would they claim the Losharik is the sub?  It is a search and rescue nuclear submarine....

Edit: As well, this happened yesterday.  Right now, it is 12 in the morning, Monday, in Moscow.  There would have been something more already.  If the sub was in distress, the crew would be dead by now.  So if there was something, the oil tanker may have been there to pick it up and its crew, picked its crew up, or it covered the submarine as it moved back to homebase, from the aircrafts.

This is a replay of the story from early 1980s. Back then, it was reported Soviet subs infiltrating Stockholm sound. There were numerous sightings but nothing was found. Years later a government commission found out that Norwegian Navy located the sub but let it go on orders from the highest level of the government. Olof Palme a contemporary prime minister, later assassinated, was suspected.

FALSE FROGMAN

NATO and Obama have a fondness for false flags.  A penchant for puting Russia on the defensive, having to deny the lies out of Washington and Brussels.

And in this case Stockholm.

In the mysterious case of the submerged submarine or moped (!) that Sweden turned into an autumn Easter Egg Hunt, it looks like it came back to bite Sweden's hairy butt.

This is a fake submarine scare like in 1982, when US and UK sumarines violated swedish territory. This is known only in Sweden, where a peace researcher has written a 300 pages book on the historical incidents. It's called "The secret war against Sweden" by Ola Tunander. Google it !

Former US Defence secretary Casper Weinberger has admitted it in 2000. For german language readers have a look at:

But I guess it is good for Sweden that Russia has confirmed it is not Russian. Now Sweden don't have to worry about negative impact on rleations with Russia if they find something and destroy it.

Seeing as I called this last night, I guess I should recap it for the gang.

Three, four days ago, Sweden's military (if it can be called that) announced that a foreign, submerged vessel was lurking in the waters around Stockholm, up to no good.

The Western Press, now known as the EU's propaganda machine, immediately flooded the world with stories about it being a disabled Russian sub.

The liars of the American propaganda machine competed with each other as to who could be the most egregious purveyor of false information.

Sunday night Moscow put out a story:

Russia to Ban Imports of Cars, Heavy Equipment, Metallurgy Products: Reports

http://en.ria.ru/russia/20141020/194308796/Russia-to-Ban-Imports-of-Cars...

Aimed, no doubt, at the stockholders of Volvo and Saab.

Today this story appears:

Swedish Forces Admit Failure, Issuing False Information on Alleged Foreign Submarine Location

STOCKHOLM, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Swedish Armed Forces admitted Monday evening that they have failed to maintain transparency and issued false information about the whereabouts of the alleged foreign submarine in the Stockholm archipelago.

"The Armed Forces are conducting an intelligence operation in the Stockholm archipelago. . . We are supposed to do this with maximum transparency while preserving operational secrecy. This is how a credible, correct authority should and must act to preserve public confidence. It must be said that the Armed Forces in a sense have failed at this," Sweden's Armed Forces said in a statement.

On Sunday, Sweden's Armed Forces released a photograph of an object, suspected to be a foreign submarine in the Stockholm archipelago and a map, allegedly showing where the photo was taken. The area of the sighting was reported to be Jungfrufjärden, a fjard near the settlement of Dalarö south of Stockholm.

However, an investigation carried out by Sweden's public broadcaster SVT showed that no locations in the area matched the photograph. After being confronted by the SVT's journalists, Swedish forces admitted issuing false information to avoid "helping foreign powers".

"In retrospect, I should have been clearer during the press conference that I was showing a map with the approximate positions because I did not wish to reveal any exact positions with regard to the operation," deputy operational director Anders Grenstad said late Monday.

Swedish forces first launched a major operation off the coast of Stockholm on Friday after receiving information, reportedly from a civilian, about the presence of an unknown underwater object in the region, suspected to be a foreign submarine.

---------------------

Karin Enstrom, the Swedish defense minister, said "We are an active partner with NATO and we want to deepen our partnership with NATO." August 27, 2014.

-------------------

Here's what happened: Rasmussen or Breedlove approached the Swedish military after Reinfeldt's recent loss to Lofven.  They had a twofer.  They'd assert that a citizen photographed a vessel in Sweden's territorial waters, near the capital, no doubt Russian.  Then the Propaganda Machinery of the West would run as far and as long as they could with it, with no evidence.

1) This would embarrass Russia and Putin just as Greenpeace had done and Russia's law against gay propaganda for minors.

2) It would put Lofven on the spot, making him choose between being a leftie or being tough with Russia.

Then yesterday Russia announced a possible ban on imports of cars heavy, equipment ....

And today Sweden's bald rear admiral had to tap dance on the chilly waters of Jungfrufjarden where the fictitious Russian ship and her ghostly crew were last seen

DER FLIEGENDE RUSSLANDER

Da dum dum, da dumte dum.
