Apple Beats Top And Bottom Line, Repurchases Record $45 Billion In Stock In Fiscal 2014
With the AAPL EPS whisper number pointing to an EPS somewhere about 10-15 cents above the EPS consensus of 1.30, moments ago AAPL did not disappoint and reported Q4 EPS of $1.42, a solid 12 cent beat to expectations, a comparable beat to the top line beat, with $42.12 billion in revenue, also well above the $39.9 Bn estimate. The gross margin of 38% was right on top of expectations. In terms of product breakdown, AAPL sold 39.3 million iPhones, above the 38 million expected, with Mac unit sales of 5.52 million also above the 4.84 million expected, with only iPad sales of 12.3 million missing the 13.0 million estimate.
Here is AAPL's guidance for Q1 2014 :
- revenue between $63.5 billion and $66.5 billion, Est. $63.5 billion
- gross margin between 37.5 percent and 38.5 percent, Est. 38%.
- operating expenses between $5.4 billion and $5.5 billion
- other income/(expense) of $325 million
- tax rate of 26.5 percent
For those looking at cash, in fiscal 2014, AAPL generated $59.7 billion in cash from operations, spending $22.6 billion on investing actvities (down from $33.8 billion a year ago), and the remainder was $37.5 billion spent on on common stock and dividends, offset by $12 billion in long-term debt and $6.3 billion in commercial paper. The last is interesting as in 2013 had zero under commercial paper.
Finally, those wondering how much stock AAPL bought back, the answer is $17 billion, which brings the total for 2014 to $45 billion, double the $22.9 billion repurchased in fiscal 2013. This was funded by a combination of cash on hand, which declined to $155 billion, or $9 billion from the previous quarter, even as net cash (excluding debt) declined to $120 billion, the lowest since Q3 2012.
Here is the visual breakdown.
Revenues:
Margins:
Segment breakdown:
Total cash (keep in mind domestic cash is now a tiny fraction of the total):
And cash, net of long-term debt and commercial paper:
But the strangest chart of all: AAPL's short-term marketable investments, tumbled from $24.8 billion to $11.2 billion, the lowest since Lehman. Did AAPL just call a market top? The question is in what: Bills or whatever stocks it is that the "world's largest hedge fund you have never heard of" has invested in?

Five years from now Apple will be faced with the same issues as Microsoft did when they released Windows ME.

People were saying that 5 years ago on this board. I was here, I know.
Coach Gundy, it was 5 years ago. They are now that much further along with regards to company lifespan. Plus we kind of got this whole reset shit to contend with. Plus Apple sucks.
What happened against TCU?

International Buying Machine.
You've been warned, again.
I really didn't mean their products don't perform as desired. They are great tracking devices per NSA specs. That's why they suck.

And with those stock buybacks they need to put AAPL on the DOW/kick IBM to the curb!
More overpriced food and disposable tech! More bandwidth for buying plastic crap online with debt.
We can't stop the growth now! We must keep growing and growing. It's not a tumor! I swear!

Manufacture ishit in China, keep profits in Ireland, sell ishit to people who can't afford it, issue debt and buy back stock.
'Merica!!! Hell ya!!
And pray tell @Ness...who should determine what people can and cannot afford. If you wants the profits here at home don't act like the French...lower the corporate tax rate to zero. The end user of anything pays the tax. Too many people who bought sour grapes and are Apple Phobic.
who should determine what people can and cannot afford.
Easy - if someone offers to loan you the money, you can afford it.
Right? Right?
Apple is one bad iPhone launch away from the stock value being halved.
Once Chipotle burns through it's chic and expansion it's one burrito away from the same.
The FED has to do QE 4 through 14 and never raise rates or this party is going to come to a quick end.
I saw some chick reading the handheld machine she carried while jogging today. I laughed and went home to poop.
I saw a mom at walk up do a complete face plant while trying to walk and read her whatever! She fell really hard, and the mishap, unnerved the ther moms.
fade that
Millions of i-phones are a helluva global tracking and controlling devices.
Hey, they make good products. And they are one of the few companies that is NOT reducing employee benefits. Not gonna comment if the stock should be 100 125 or 75. Just a good company. Been using their products for over 20 years. No complaints.
And no I do not work for apple, promote Apple or have any interest in Apple stock. They just make good stuff.
Lets move on. Apple is not the problem. And we all here know that.
I concur, monopoly. For some reason, the folks on this site really despise AAPL. I, too, grew up with Apple products going all the way back to the Mac Plus (helluva machine for its day). They've always served me well - never a crash or virus. Apple does seem to rely on some apparent underhanded ploys to protect both their hardware and software patents. But, you've got to give them credit... that's how competition works. As long as their products and innovations continue to perform and satisfy, I don't have any complaints with them. One thing's for sure... they beat the hell out of any Microsoft product I've ever had the misfortune to use.
Bang & Olufsen beats the hell out Bose. And Lamborghini beats Fiat.
I still have a G5 tower from 2006. It's been used for work basically every single day since then. No crashes or viruses in eight years of almost continuous use is pretty amazing to me. My parents have nothing but problems with their Dell that's used probably 10% as much.
Their student version of a CAD program ate a term project in engineering school the night before it was due. I redrew it in AutoCAD during an all-nighter and have never relied on a MAC or Apple product since. Pretty stuff, packaged by a marketing genius, but not worth the price. I am equally impressed by its equity (or more importantly its genuine lack thereof).
Apple doesn't make a CAD program, at least as far as I know. Unless you mean something like VectorWorks, which completely sucks IMO, but isn't made by Apple.
Mc, They sure as hell offered one in the late 80s but it obviously failed. In the early 80s each of my lines of code were punched on cards for Fortran and Cobal. And as old as I am my youngest child is only in middle school and wouldn't touch an iProduct nor would his siblings. Forcing poor rural third-world youth to build iStuff at near slave wages to benefit silicon valley and wall street types is wrong.
I don't own any iPhones/Pods/Pads for that very reason. My computer was made in Texas, though, but my company bought it for me so that's beside the point.
Great to hear!
During graduate school there were three required subjects including Finite Element Analysis. Fortunately my Professor was a pioneer in the field. Unfortunately he had arrived at the sad conclusion that 50+ percent of findings were off by a factor of 4+ meaning most of it had no value. I find the field of IT to be as, or more, unvaluable. Jobs was most certainly a marketing genius but the bubble that is Apple, product and stock, will be severely constrained and pop.
Apple is a patent troll, but seems to still serving products with fair quality. The patent theather against Samsung recently is a nice example of how fucked up american corporations have gotten.

What other compaines get full-page write-ups (ie. adverts) for free in major print/online media for releasing a fucking new mouse or trackpad?
All who pay for it.
I love how their new phones are carbon copies of the Samsung Galaxy and Note. Fucking fags.
No ebola here. Now is it aapl or the FED? Apple is number one at $200B above Exxon. That's 30% bigger than Exxon. Hmmm...
Can't wait to line up for i-need 7, 8, 9, 10
this is why I don't have respect for apple
they killed free music as used to be Green Lime etc.now you pay for it
they mostly sniffed most coolest technological progressions mostly in Asia contracted stick the Apple brand to it and sell it
there is noting made in USA but most is sold in USA
mass media created cult like spin for marketing this to the point its absurd
just my opinion
If you still want free music, get a library card.
o yea there is plenty like you...
I still have my music free so LoL
Seriously, what the hell do librarians think is going on when someone checks out ten CDs at a time? The library is like the low-tech, lazy man's Pirate Bay.
no limit on my side
about you?
Lime Wire that is in my previous post
and the sheep rejoyced........baah baah baah
OK...so QE4 'off' and rates set to rise again...until tomorrow or the next day anyway.
Got it.
What about the iWatch???
3 months ago those marketing einsteins were peddling that stupid assed product. Wtf happened to it?
Well, no one really knows... When Apple releases a product, you can't get it for 6 months.
Looks like the government is buying a lot of iphones.
Somewhere there's a big pile of new iphones about to be thrown away.
Government 'workers' must buy all of the iBubbles so public pensions appear well funded prior to midterm elections.
ZH commenters sure are a clever group. This site is like a comic outlet for the economically disenfranchised. But someone should tell you guys that profanity sounds really ignorant when its typed...
