"We Are From The Government And We Are Here To Get Rid Of Ebola"

Tyler Durden's picture

With Ron Klain now not expected to start his reign as Ebola Czar until Wednesday (we assume he has some other deadly pandemic virus to take care of before switching over), The White House has just one message for the world...

Obviously, the guy talking has no credibility. His boxers have light blue polkadodts that clash with those loud freaky socks. If the dude has no FASHION sense, he has no sense at ALL!

<sarc tag off>

I get confused about 'Miffed Microbiologist'. I THINK it's a girl, because sometimes 'Mr. Miffed' makes a comment regarding a post, but sometimes, I think it's a boy because 'Mrs. Miffed' makes a comment regarding a post.

The field of microbiology is quite tedious and sometimes fascinating. Boys and girls are equally suited in this field of science (if they have the patience).

Sociopaths and psychopaths use microbiologists to achieve their goals (just like nuclear physicists or computer programmers), you know. Keep them in the dark about the projects, and feed them bullshit about the goals. It used to be called being a 'mushroom', but the CIA has sanitized the term, calling it 'compartmentalization'. The 'need to know' offshoot is also quite in vogue.

Ok, let me clarify. I am a woman. I picked miffed microbiologist because after lurking on ZH for a year, someone made a completely asinine comment about my field. So, I wanted to comment to them with that avatar. Well, silly me, after one week when my account was activated the thread was dead. Not being able to think of any thing better, I kept it.

My husband " mr miffed" joined after I did. I wanted him to choose PissedoffProgrammer but he felt ZH was really my gig and considering I had taken his name in marriage for thirty years, he chose Mr Miffed out of deference to me and all my hard work trying to understand the financial and economic issues facing the world today.

Just FYI

TeamDepends, the flat tyre issue is already taken care off in the EU:

eCall: automated emergency call for road accidents mandatory in cars from 2015

To help mitigate the consequences of serious road accidents across the EU, today the European Commission adopted two proposals to ensure that, by October 2015, cars will automatically call emergency services in case of a serious crash. The "eCall" system automatically dials 112 - Europe's single emergency number - in the event of a serious accident. It communicates the vehicle's location to emergency services, even if the driver is unconscious or unable to make a phone call. It is estimated that it could save up to 2500 lives a year.

Paul's article follows up on my original post.

In an interview conducted in 2007, a prominent Russian scientist who defected to the United States told PBS Frontline that Ebola is just one of many genetically engineered bioweapons:

Dr. Kanatjan Alibekov was the former First Deputy Director of Biopreparat from 1988 to 1992. Biopreparat was the Soviet Union's biological weapons program. Alibekov defected from the Soviet Union and moved to Washington, DC in 1992... In the 70s and beginning of 80s the Soviet Union started developing new biological weapons -- Marburg infection biological weapon, Ebola infection biological weapon, Machupo infection, [or] Bolivian hemorrhagic biological weapon, and some others.

The U.S. Dept. of Defense mirrors all biological weapons developed by the Russians, of course. And as the theory goes, they need to be tested somewhere to see just how well they work. Why not target a bunch of rural Africans? After all, that's what Pfizer did with its own vaccine experiments that killed African children.

Africa has been the target for a LOT of things!

US Army withheld promise from Germany that Ebola virus wouldn't be weaponized

The United States has withheld assurances from Germany that the Ebola virus - among other related diseases - would not be weaponized in the event of Germany exporting it to the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).

German MFA Deputy Head of Division for Export Control Markus Klinger provided a paper to the US consulate's Economics Office (Econoff), "seeking additional assurances related to a proposed export of extremely dangerous pathogens."

Germany subsequently made two follow-up requests and clarifications to the Army, according to the unclassified Wikileaks cable.

"This matter concerns the complete genome of viruses such as the Zaire Ebola virus, the Lake Victoria Marburg virus, the Machupo virus and the Lassa virus, which are absolutely among the most dangerous pathogens in the world," the request notes.

One thing for sure; they won't, can't, or won't try to stop a pandemic.

Ebola may not be it, but a repeat of an influenza epidemic like Spanish Flu will never be stopped or slowed by these folks.

Hell, the Spanish Flu epidemic was in 1918 and all they had back then were boats, and horse and wagon for the majority.

Hummmm...indeedee-do. There always are until the darkness is revealed in the Light.

Lest see, in the last century, how many false flag events were not staged? Why is it that when the babylonian govt says anything through the gangrenous faucet of lies and dis/mis-information blah-blah lame stream media, the words Sandy Hook Hoax, Boston Bombing Hoax and worst of all, the horrible 9/11 hoax fly through the air like Chemical plasma clouds of azure? In modern history, it is a for sure bet that everything the babylonians spew out of their flappity jaws, is complete horseshirt lies and anything but the real truth.

Ever notice how real truth makes you feel good? And when you know in your heart that if you are embroiled in lies and corruption, you are never happy, and always dis-eased? Funny thing about harmony. It feeds on goodness and love received and expressed every day in the matrix of choice.

+1 The difference between Science and the Reality...

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 18:43 | 5356931 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

Well in theory there isn't supposed to be a difference. The scientific method is just a repeatable way to get at reality. If we fail in that it is because we didn't ask the right questions, or didn't have enough data to answer them, or were too busy being human to notice we didn't know what we thought we knew, which happens a lot more often than you can imagine, in fact it happens all the time meaning nearly 100% of the time even for scientists of caliber.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 18:46 | 5356945 Urban Redneck

Too bad reality doesn't care about scientists' theories, the universe could be so much simpler.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 19:01 | 5356993 cougar_w

I don't fully understand what you mean to imply by that. But if you are implying that reality is inaccessable to any kind of human approach I promise you are profoundly ill-informed.

Reality is not inherently inaccessible, but one's access does not in any way determine reality, only one's perception of reality.

An important distinction, but not very useful in practice. All we have is what we can surmise, and we need to trust our rational abilites or else all (meaning, everything) was illusion all along.

Which BTW is the central theme of my novel. So don't imagine I am not hip to the challenge.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 19:45 | 5357202 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

I think that the way I'd put it is that science is something that you use to construct a natural description of a natural phenomenon that is often very useful for manipulating the natural world.  You never arrive at some "grand truth" or anything like that.  As our ability to observe new things increases, some older descriptions may get superseded, yet that does not make them useless.  I can still go back to classical mechanics if I want to predict where an artillery shell is going to land.  There's no need to pick up Kip Thorne's Gravitation and apply General Relativity to do this, even though I (well, not me, my advanced math skills are a bit rusty,) could presumably do so and get an accurate answer.

Newtonian mechanics works beautifully within the restrictions that it was initially observed.  It just isn't the whole story.  GR and QM disagree with each other once you get down to scales that we cannot observe, so we know that they're not the whole store either.  Yet both have been used effectively to manipulate our environment.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 20:05 | 5357309 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

And yet there are those who will require that if you cannot know the whole thing, then you don't know anything. And if you ever once update an older idea with new evidence or better theory, then you will always be wrong plain and simple. And if (heaven forbid) you ever replace one "theory" of nature with another very different one, then you've proven yourself and your entire field a fraud incapable of reasoning about the universe -- all the way back to Day One.

And yet we still have antibiotics, still fly across continents, and still enjoy technolgy. But that's supposed to be different.

Well we're off topic now for sure. And bitching about human nature is always a waste of time. But it's fun, once in a while.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 20:27 | 5357400 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

It's not particularly useful, until one forgets it. How many "scholarly scientific papers" providing estimated calculations of R0 for the current ebola outbreak were written and accepted before there was even an acknowledgement that any calculation was based on reported cases and may not reflect real cases (Nishiura & Chowel in September I think). That's a lot of 95% overconfidence bullshit masquerading as "science".

The Reinhart & Rogoff or JPM "math errors" are the rare exception. Most professionals focus on the methodology or conclusions when trying to identify research errors, but not enough look at the assumptions and premises. Think of how many of trillions of dollars Myron Scholes has cost the world economy, between him not checking his own assumptions at LTCM, or Blackrock blindly accepting his assumptions when developing derivative pricing models.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 21:09 | 5357556 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

"Think of how many of trillions of dollars Myron Scholes has cost the world economy"

What is this I see? Someone talking about scientific rigor in the same sentence with economics? What madness is this. Economics is all about justifying post hoc how someone already intends to move money around between groups. They already know the answer they intend to "derive" and will allow "data" that supports their intent. There is no science at work there. Nor is there any peer review and if there was the peers doing to review are deeply involved in the scam. This is the second-oldest profession, and I give prostitutes more credibility.

"How many "scholarly scientific papers" providing estimated calculations of R0 for the current ebola outbreak were written and accepted before"

That's fine. If later data suggest there might be room for another look, someone will do it. Yes there might be two papers (there might be a dozen) but if the latest one sources the earlier one(s) then you have a built-in corrective mechanism, and a picture slowly emerges one paper at a time. Happens all the time, perfectly healthy. What that process means is that we don't have to wait for everything to happen perfectly -- in other words, waiting forever. Instead of sitting wondering when "perfection" has arrived we can look at what we have, do some work from that, and then look again later, and then perhaps take the work forwared a bit. Rinse and repeat. Everything is in the open, everyone can look at it, new data rolls in slowly, everyone can talk about where things are headed, and anyone wants to can write another paper. If it sounds messy, then stay away from it, that's how it works and it works remarkably well for something that really is just people wondering what is going on and offering reasoned thoughts building toward a shared view. Doesn't always end well, but it's better than the alternative, being scripture.

Urban Redneck's picture

Yes... I went there. Then again two of my primary job functions when I worked in banking were Industrial Engineering and Data Analytics (I didn't write trading algos back then, or any other time, but unfortunately for humanity, Myron Scholes, or someone who worked for him did write algos).

Reinhart & Rogoff are dismal scientists, but where Mad Myron runs up a tab for the rest of us is when he moves from economics to finance.

Finance should be reproducible with an accurately quantifiable [un]certainty factor. If a banker can't do that, then they should get a job as an economist (or an investment banker).

Oddly, where finance is not reproducible, is in reconstructing the movement of a specific dollar within a bank, one could easier track the movement of a single 02 molecule in the atmosphere, but yet the bankers can tell you with absolute certainty the exact number dollar molecules in their ecosystem. (And yet people insist on repeating the simplistic argument that migration towards digital money will relegate money laundering to the dustbin of history. Paper currencies have their redeeming features just as lab books written in ink do.)

So finance is a science, not a hard science, but far more rigorous than that other Dismal Science... Climatology. The Church of Climatology, however, seems to count a rather large number of physicists, mathematicians, geologists, meteorologists, and chemists (though surprisingly few of the last) in its congregation, all of whom ostensibly practice "science"... Which bunch of witch doctors will do more damage to humanity is open for debate, but one fetish they share is DATA, lots and lots of data.

They have so much data, in fact that they need to build warehouses for it, on a scale that would make the scattered ashes of George Carlin's brain explode, even before the NSA disclosures. Unfortunately, virtual warehouses aren't like physical warehouses. One can't take a widget and mark it with "X" and throw it a bin in aisle 10, and then come back the next year and find and retrieve that specific widget. In order to efficiently store the data, and facilitate its retrieval, the data is modified on arrival. If it were science, shouldn't one be able to exactly reconstruct each and every original data set at any time? Just as in the old days when one could demand to see the original bound logs of another's research. Perhaps the database engineering discipline has improved in the decade since I got out??? (Is the "only join" now a full outer join, and if so how are the inevitable duplicates then handled?) In which case, any scientist publishing a paper today based on analysis of a large set in a data warehouse would also be able to explain the differences in the physical world processes that led to the population of different records in the same table... (as the monkeys fly out of their butts). If they cannot both exactly construct the original data, and explain differences in the real world processes that populated distinct sources of the combined data set, then is any analysis performed based on reality or on a (mis)perception?

So to reduce the long winded rant- Aren't a whole bunch of "hard" scientists (even if unintentionally) reducing their fields to the level of the flaccid intellect of Paul Krugman?

(BTW - I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that corrective mechanism to kick in with regards to R0, since I might be "waiting forever" myself.)

It certainly can be, particularly when hubris or ceteris paribus are involved. But my point really had to the with the nature of modern data itself. Once one gets beyond the capacity of a spreadsheet and moves to a database, one is literally constructing his own Matrix too often replete with blue pills. If both the software and database engineers who build the matrix, and the analysts who use it, are not extremely careful with documenting the business or scientific communities processes for providing data, and extremely conscientious of limits of the data and any transformations, it ceases to be capable of being science and becomes a fantasy virtual reality matrix. The climate folks are easy to pick on because their matrix encompasses the whole world, and supposedly accurately, at least the bankers can accurately count their binary dollar molecules. With a half dozen different, yet simultaneously correct models, running off a handful of back-end datasets where the Climate gods can't even accurately keep track of manual adjustments to their own data records. Not only are they batting .0000 with the projections they are willing to sign their names to beforehand, out the millions of forward simulations they have run, they have never gotten it right. With a large enough confidence interval one can can bound reality, but that's not the same as calculating (guessing) right. If one uses a fat enough highlighter on a piece of paper he can cover just about any function. The NSA represents only one part of the big data nightmare of 21st century, and there's more than just Axciom, ChoicePoint, Palantir and their competitors (WTF the Tylers give a neo-Nazi like Peter Thiel the column space I have no idea, but it's their site). If people don't look carefully at the hard and practical limits of big data, we will get Skynet by default, through the natural evolution of the marketing departments of the analytics providers.

Rant Over.

But if you want to see how bad it actually gets in finance - try reconciling EU Eurostat and UN Comtrade data on European trade & finance. If you didn't read the small print, you would never think Eurostat is feeding all the European trade data to Comtrade.

Something occurred to me while ranting in another thread. Under certain circumstances "That's fine. If later data suggests" is really less than ideal. The instance I'm thinking of is the Reality of daily new ebola infections in West Africa vs the Science of daily new ebola infections, in terms of allocating enough resources to actually contain the spread of virus (versus providing us in the peanut gallery with food fight fodder).

Yes, they can throw all that science out the window, and just say we need moar! moar! moar! or the world will end... But isn't that what a just banker does when they fuck up?

Except when the banksters fuck up, we don't have to "pray" that their resources increase faster than ebola spreads plus fast enough to close the existing containment gap.

Theories and more theories.  Nothing but theories.

Medical version of science attempts to GUESS at reality.  No real science in it.

Why 90% of their guesses are wrong.

Medical science is really medical philosophy.  More like religion actually.  If you challenge a doctrine you get excommunicated.  No tolerance for dissent.

That's religion, not science.

They keep looking only because there is money in doing so.

The medical field (Big Pharma) is full of such scams -- always because there is money in it -- and this will continue until the end of the world.

FWIW, cancer will cure itself when we stop polluting our food, air and water with known carcinogens. Until then we are swimming in our own industrial filth and cancer is our reward until the end.

The thing that concerns me is that with all of these people getting infected, we'll get a mutation or two that makes it easier to spread.  Not necessarily through mosquitoes, but maybe through being able to survive longer outside of the body or becoming transmissible before the onset of symptoms or something.  A reduction in lethality to something like 25% combined with something that makes it easier to spread could wind up killing more people.

Good point, cougar, but mosquitoes don't fly very far.  Look at it from the other side.

The virus is much smaller than the malaria spirochaete, and skeeters love blood,

   so why not?

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 18:53 | 5356974 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

"why not" is easy; to be insect-borne it must be swallowed by the insect and then carried inside and then it must be deliverable after. That means the virus has defenses against being digested, against being attacked by the insect's own tissues, and then it must somehow make it's way into some part of the insect that comes into contact with humans later, and in some reliable quantify. One particle at random is not enough (whatever else you might think) it needs to be large quantities per infection. None of those are easy to work out. Could it happen? Yeah I guess. And monkeys could fly out of my butt.

No the route is not insects, nor will it be for a while. On the order of thousands of years maybe. People are used to the idea of things happening on the time scale at which humans can innovate -- days or weeks. But pathogens have bigger issues to solve (and ebola has more than most) so we can set it aside for now.

Set it aside until we cannot, of course. Nobody knows for sure.

On balance, I agree with you.  The better argument is with flies.  Flies are all over dead bodies and every food source in Africa.  If flies could transmit, it should be almost global by now.  What worries me is Taleb and the lack of any good stats on this stuff.  Still very much in the unknown, unknown, except that needle sticks work great.

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 19:25 | 5357104 cougar_w

The scary part is that ebola is only now (the last few months) getting into urban areas. All the conjecture about rats, pets, flies and all that was meaningless -- to now. Now, we find out. Now nature starts to work on all the new options, driving into corners, digging around, trying to find a way to kick our asses. If there is a way, nature will now find it. That's how this works. And if there is not a way nature will not, so we have that going for us.

Good question, but I don't think anyone knows.  All I've done is review the published stuff.

Early on, they looked at mosquitoes as a vector, and found nothing, but that was working in the field under terrible conditions.  Even the material about monkeys and fruit bats is largely anecdotal. based on what victims remembered doing in the days before they got sick.

Looks like we're flying blind, Cap'n.

"they looked at mosquitoes as a vector, and found nothing"

Don't make the usual mistake of thinking that null results are meaningless. If the science is well-done, and nothing was found, then you have to accept the evidence. That is the method. Formulating random opinions is not science, you can do it all you want to go nuts, but it's a meaningless activity in the current discussion. Fun, but it does not take us forward. The evidence for food (bushmeat) transmission has more actual evidence than you allow for.

That I doubt Kirk. Malaria has a complex life cycle where the mosquito actually is the sexual stage of the disease. It doesn't simply carry plasmodium from one to another host. I think it could be theoretically possible but unlikely. It would depend on the viability of Ebola to live in the mosquito for a given time as well as the concentration of virions in the capillaries depending on the viral load at the stage of infection. After a mosquito has a blood meal, how long before another is taken? Can Ebola remain viable for this amount of time? Is Ebola lethal to a mosquito? The nature of an Ebola infection with massive bleeding and vomiting makes me think this virus has not developed and insect vector but is relying on the "spray the Bay" technique. IMHO

People in the Western World need to know what’s happening here in West Africa. THEY ARE LYING!!! “Ebola” as a virus does NOT Exist and is NOT “Spread”. The Red Cross has brought a disease to 4 specific countries for 4 specific reasons and it is only contracted by those who receive treatments and injections from the Red Cross. That is why Liberians and Nigerians have begun kicking the Red Cross out of their countries and reporting in the news the truth.

Doesnt make alot of sense to me. Why would they go through all that trouble just to get striking diamond workers back to work? #3 doesnt make sense to me either. If the goal was to spread fear wouldnt they stop all flights and close the border so it appears as if they are taking the appropriate steps to halt the spread and are blameless? Wouldnt they want the public to believe its airborne so they'll be quicker to take the vaccine?

Flounder Klain fucked Americans in the ass to the tune of $500 million by turd-polishing the Solendra deal.

Solar is notoriously difficult to monetize, absent some sort of breakthrough, which nobody has had yet. This thing was swimming in red flags, and no real VC firm would have touched it with a 28-foot pole, even for a small fraction of $500 mil. Even for $25-50 mil, massive technical and financial expert scrutiny would have been applied. A real VC wouldn't even have read the executive summary.
