First Swiss Gold Poll Shows Pro-Gold Side In Lead At 45%

The first poll of how the Swiss people will vote in the “Save Our Swiss Gold” initiative on November 30th shows that the Swiss are leaning towards voting for the pro-gold initiative.

Gold Initiative Poll Results -  20 Minuten

The poll had quite a large sample of 13,397 people from all over Switzerland who participated in the first phase of the 20 Minuten online survey on October 15.

The poll shows that 45% approve the Swiss gold initiative and 39% are against. There are 29% firm yes voters and 28% firm no voters (see graph). The poll shows 16% are leaning towards a yes or are “more yes” and 11% are leaning towards a no or are “more no.”

20 Minuten or 20 Minutes in English, is a very popular German language free daily newspaper and online paper in Switzerland, published in a tabloid format and online.

Swiss Flag

The political scientist Lucas Leeman and Fabio Wasserfallen organised the survey according to demographic, geographic and political variables and it is weighted so that the sample corresponds as closely as possible the structure of the voting population according to 20 Minuten.

There are a lot of swing voters with 16% undecided and not wanting to commit themselves.

The poll suggests that the Swiss gold initiative remains tightly in the balance and may be much closer than is commonly expected.

Swiss Gold Reserves

Some have suggested that as this was an online poll, caution may be needed as the 13,397 people polled are likely to be more digital savvy and younger. However, it is still believed to give a good barometer of sentiment just five weeks before the poll and before there has been concerted campaigning by either side.

20 Minuten is distributed to commuters at over 150 train stations across the country. Since September 2004, the German language edition has been the most widely read daily newspaper in Switzerland, surpassing Blick. The audited distribution in 2004 was 329,242 (WEMF AG) and it had a readership of an estimated 782,000 according to Wikipedia.

The three key measures of the “Save Our Swiss Gold” initiative are the following:

* an increase in gold holdings of the SNB to reflect an allocation of 20% of total reserves (today gold accounts for 7.7% of total reserves)
* and a moratorium on the sale of Swiss gold reserves
?* the repatriation of Swiss gold reserves - some of which are believed to be in the UK and Canada

Gold in Singapore rose above $1,250/oz, after rising 0.7%  in the previous session, prior to capping once London opened. At the open in London, gold soared to the highest in over five weeks as the greenback pulled back.

Gold for immediate delivery rose 0.4% t to $1,251.63 an ounce by 9:46 a.m. in London, according to Bloomberg generic pricing. It hit $1,253.85, the highest since September 10. Gold for December delivery gained 0.6% to $1,251.60 on the Comex in New York.

The dollar dropped for a second day, reaching the lowest level in nearly a week.

Futures traders put the odds of a U.S. rate increase at 46% by October 2015, down from 50% at the end of last week.

Despite very robust global demand, particularly from China and India, gold ETF holdings fell to a five-year low yesterday.

There are a number of gold friendly factors supporting prices including geopolitical and economic uncertainty and still dovish Fed and other central bank policies.

Can't the US Federal Reserve just round up all those "yes" voters and execute them?   Maybe send an invoice to their families for the cost of the bullet ?

The majority of Swiss do not understand gold (IMHO), and certainly do not own any. I once read a number of ~10% of the Swiss owning gold, but I'd assume that most of these people own (unbacked) paper gold claims. The Bundes-, National- and Staenderate, the SNB, and all larger political parties (except the SVP), as well as many from the economy and industry, are against it. The fear is an overly strong Swiss Frank along with decreasing exports (having essentially no natural resources, exports and the (crumbling) banking system are the backbones of the Swiss economy. The anti-propaganda and YES-negative-consequences-fearmongering will be HEAVY... ...and many voters will believe it. I doubt it will pass (unfortunately), but hope the Swiss will prove me wrong though. Just don't count on the Swiss to save the gold market. Gold will have it's day either way, and when it will the SNB will have 20% and more of its balance sheet "in gold", without having to repatriate the remaing ~300 tonnes from GB and Canada, nor having to add 1 ounce. Till then, be happy with the offered discount by TPTB...

aside from children starving

don't forget about the 'widows and orphans'

not to mention those who are proposing this are 'unpatriotic' and don't want to 'pay their fair share'. They should 'rightly' be called 'terrurists'.

If they've done nothing wrong, then they have nothing to hide.

More problematic is the mis-characterization of which side actually ahead.

The YES side needs a double a majority to change the Federal Constitution.

All the Status Quo side needs is to prevent a double majority.

An overall majority of the voters who cast ballots and a majority of the cantons (defined as a majority of the votes cast within the specific canton)

Out of 8 million residents 2.5 million live in Zürich and Bern, but half a dozen Cantons (not the half-Cantons, which are even weirder) have populations under 50,000. So you can't win a referendum by just carrying Cali, NY, Texas & Florida... But there are actually only about 5.5 million citizens, of whom not all are of voting age or distributed proportionately among the cantons.

They use Paper Ballots. Voting is controlled and supervised at the local level so everywhere is a bit different, but here they Shanghai random citizens into executing the count which anyone can witness.

So the vote will be accurately counted and reported, but at the same time jvetter713 is actually correct, even if 100% voted for it, it won't really see the light of day as most believe. The Federal Government would then have to write the implementing regulations (which would most likely neuter it). The insane way the referendum is drafted leads me to believe it was either written by a really low-IQ goldbug or an employee of a bullion bank.

Your very welcome. As for what U.R. said, it is noteworthy that of the ~8+ million people in Switzerland, almost 25% are foreigners (that's among the highest percentage in the whole of Europe) that are not allowed to vote here. so there are actually only ~6 million Swiss, of which only the 18+ year old are allowed to vote.

Tue, 10/21/2014 - 18:17 | 5361119 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

I'm one of those 25%.

Come to think of it, I think the first time I came to Switzerland to ski was about 40 years ago, about the time Irving Dunn moved here to teach at ETH. I am confident his German is better than mine, but I'm suspicious he must have pissed off some people in Schwyz to have his neighbors reject his citizenship application on the grounds he could not name six neighboring villages and was unaware of the current political issues in Einsiedeln after 40 years. Not even a dumb ass American redneck is that ignorant. I could blindly place at least 15 of 22 Gemeindes in the Bezirke and I don't think I've ever even set foot in places like Wasterkingen or Hüntwangen. And I've only been on the perpetually overcast side of the country for about half a decade.

It's a quirky little country you have here...

All Swiss adults of voting age (18 and older) get to vote [as long as their "normally in the system" of course (i.e., the homeless under the bridge or wherever - yes they do exist in Swizterland too - no, the guy on welfare yes)]. The voting system in Switzerland is quite unique - direct democracy - whereby through referendum and popular voting the people get to change Swiss laws at all levels, the community, the canton, and the government/constitution/federal law.

Tue, 10/21/2014 - 13:59 | 5360049 CHX
CHX's picture

This is Swiss law. Changes of the constitution do need a double majority, meaning the majority of cantons, as well as the majority of the overall population need to say yes.

Tue, 10/21/2014 - 10:55 | 5359238 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

It doesn't matter, they want to change the Constitution as a means to achieving the desired ends.

That sort of thing isn't taken lightly or easily achieved.

Otherwise, the distinction between direct democracy and mob rule is erased.

Democracy is when the masses vote for something that TPTB approve of.  Mob rule is when the masses vote for something that is not approved by TPTB.
