Russia Deploys Troops, Robots Along Entire "2nd Middle East" Arctic Belt

Tyler Durden's picture

On the heels of Sweden's military deployment (following the discovery of a damaged Russian sub), it appears Russia is taking no chances with its access to Arctic resources. As Reuters reports, the Russian defense minister announced today that Russian military units will be deployed along the entire Arctic border from Murmansk to Chukotka in 2014.

Interfax adds that combat robots are also being deployed to protect Russian oil and gas infrastructure in the harsh environment of the Arctic. This should be no surprise as The Guardian notes, the Arctic’s hydrocarbon resources nevertheless exert a powerful pull. It has been compared to "a second Middle East", with oil and gas reserves thought to represent 17% and 30%, respectively, of the global total.

This of course, is nothing new...

On 11 October, in an attempt to forestall such criticism, the Russian defence ministry announced plans to build “a regional environmental centre [...] to prevent pollution in areas where Russian forces are deployed”. Russian troops systematically receive “training and briefings on environmental safety and compliance with legislation”, deputy minister Dmitry Bulgakov added. But it will take more than this to reassure the western powers.

But is a major escalation along such a massive border...

*  *  *

And finally, Interfax reports, Combat robots to protect Russian oil and gas infrastructure in Arctic

Undersea combat robots will be protecting Russian oilrigs and transportation networks in the Arctic region at some point, Deputy General Director of the Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects, Chairman of the Foundation's Scientific and Technological Board Vitaly Davydov told Interfax-AVN.

"The Foundation is not designing robotic sharks but it is working on undersea robots and autonomous gadgets capable of protecting infrastructure, controlling the waters and detecting, tracking and, if necessary, destroying a potential enemy. The prospective machinery may be deployed on the sea bottom and specialized submersibles," he said.

So far, the Foundation is focused not so much on defense issues as on mineral development projects, Davydov said.

"The rivalry in this region will be centered on its natural resources. A key task to be solved in the Arctic is access to mineral resources, first and foremost, hydrocarbons. This goal can be achieved through the completion of numerous tasks in the discovery, production and transportation of resources, sub-glacial operations and infrastructural security. This is the target of the Foundation's research programs," he said.

*  *  *

As The Guardian concludes, The Arctic, which is governed by international maritime law, is also the focus of other disputes. Canada regularly carries out military exercises in its Arctic territory. Relations between Ottawa and Moscow have cooled significantly since the start of the Ukraine crisis.

Heroic and very brave young lady.

A few months ago a family member suggested I try to get into journalism because she knows I like researching and writing articles that I send to a few friends and family from time to time.  I told her I needed to be alive and at home for my wife and daughter and that the kind of "research" that I'd be interested in would be too dangerous.

That lady died searching for the truth and doing something I am unable and unwilling to do.  I have so much respect for her and others like her.

i have no hate for russia and no love for empire. but let's be realistic. you might not like empire, but that doesn't mean russia is 'better' because they have none. they HAD ONE called the soviet block. they lost it. mostly due to the same factor that has destroyed most empires. GREED HUBRIS AND INTERNAL CORRUPTION. asmuch as the u.s. wants to take credit with europe for deploying effective sanctions on the soviets, they could have retained their influences until now had they not been so fucking corrupt and greedy. commnis soviet bearacracy let to the raping and pillaging of many a soviet block country. due to sheer plunder. CLEARLY YOUR ONE WORLD ANTI-SEMITIC view blinds you from seeing that even putin gets the  notion that not all jews are the same as not all christians are.

soviet bolsheviks literally orchestrated the killing of traditional jewish folks in moscow. that , and moving them all to siberia . sanctioning soveit 'repression'  against them as well---meaning murder and expropriation.

"The Russian demand data has surprised on the upside recently, with approximately 3.7 mb/d of products delivered in July, 90 kb/d above the forecast cited in last month's Report. A combination of strong July gains for residual fuel oil, 'other products' and jet/kerosene, more than offset absolute declines in gasoline and LPG, to leave overall demand roughly 1% higher y-o-y in July. This escalating-demand environment comes despite the continuation/build of Russian/Ukrainian tensions and the implementation of sanctions with the West. The Russian economy is currently expected to expand by a muted 0.2% in 2014, according to the consensus of economic forecasters quoted in early-September's Economist magazine. Such an economic outlook is down significantly on the plus 1% growth rate seen in 2013, but even this curtailment is unlikely to be sufficient to bring Russian demand growth much below the current near +1% forecast, given the strength of January-July data"

Tyler has gone full on openly compromised propoganda rag.

Tyler for the third article claims "following the discovery of a damaged Rusian sub" - and this is a blantant lie by the Tylers for the third article.

No sub has been found much less a Russian one.  Now, perhaps one will be found but perhaps a sub will be found and it will belong to the UK or US.

Three times is no accident.  ZH is being paid to push this deception/lie or if you can get far enough behind the curtain you will find it is compromised.  There is no other explanation.

ZH refuses to publish in these lies that the Swedish navy has denied any messages were intercepted, the Swedish govt has admitted that the photo used by ZH is a fake, and the Swedish govt admits that they have no evidence that there is even a sub.

Just like George Washington was used to post an article that MH17 was shot down by Russia now the Tylers/ZH are used directly to post these lies.  The question was and is, what is so important about pushing the deception/lie to damage the credibility of their held asset/tool in such an obvious manner?

Everybody always leaves out the drunk snow machine operators...they always go for the kill at the highest eschelon of the operations, like blocking French CEO Gulfstreams...

"Robots"...like Dune's Tleilaxu axlotl tank device for cloning a ghola...the 'tanks' were women.

Methinks the robots are drunk slave operators.  Vodka cheap da ?

IF/When the world gets warmer, the Arctic Ocean will become more strategically important than the Mediterranean or the China Sea. Maritime commerce and natural resource exploration in this region will outshine the Middle East. And the shipping time to between China and Europe will be cut in half. So, it is more than just energy resources at stake; but those resources will be much more accessible and much less remote than now.

Geography and international boundaries favor Russia in this area. But -unlike the South China Sea, there appears to be no boundary disputes to fret over. There is plenty of space for all the nations bordering this area in which to develop and from which to profit. There is no need for conflict here, unless the financial class currently at the top of the food chain wants "its" share of ownership and opportunity to be as disproportionately great in this region as it is for the rest of the world. That is going to be a problem.

Since The West always wants more, the Russians are serving notice that what the West has already is all that it is going to get. Preposterous, isn't it? They are preparing to defend what's theirs.

There's big oil fields everywhere, this concept that oil is a fossil fuel and is a depleting resource is complete propaganda by the US Government and the big oil producers

Maybe (note:I don't think so).  But is it cash flow positive?  If it's abiotic, how fast does it replenish?

Putin ought to build an artificial island on the far side of the North Pole and challenge the Canucks to knock him off it.

Now why would you ruin a good story by claiming Sweden discovered a Russian sub?

I couldn't keep reading after that.

I think M. De Margerie's passing has a hell of a lot more to do with the fact that he tried to stiff-arm Exxon out of the arctic than his feeble and half hearted talks about non dollar oil trading.
Kind of like when Hugo Chavez appropriated Exxon assets in Venezuela, then suddenly he, um, "got cancer" and died.

I would say don't mess around with Stone Cold Muthafukah Rex Tillerson.

Yikes!  It sounds like one big mysterious conspiracy.  America's behind it, I can feel it!  America is supremely incompetent in virtually every other sphere, but somehow they managed to get this guy killed who dared question the dollar's supremacy.

:-)

It'll be interesting to watch Vladimir prostrate himself at America's feet in 2015.

Low oil prices, a falling ruble (despite Russia spending billions attempting to prop it up).  Merkel openly berating the little man in front of EU leaders.  A floundering economy.  Approval ratings that have nowhere to go but down.

And now - if Zero Hedge stories are to be believed - perhaps even a trapped Russian sub off of Sweden.  Vlad is going to be begging for the good old days when he had a collegial, congenial relationship with the American president who said he had a 'sense of his soul'.

Amerikan Patriot must be one of those idiots with a "Ready for Hillary" bumper sticker on the back of his car. Why else would someone continually parrot her talking points regarding Russia?

Bob, I parrot the truth.  You?  Just blather you hear on ZH about Vladimir's new wonderful Soviet Union V2.0.

Have you ever lived or worked in Russia?  Based on your post, it's obvious you've got no insight whatsoever about what's happening over there.

Which makes you a silly (uninformed) goose.

Which city do you plan on settling in?  Moscow?  Novosibirsk?
