Snow-Plough Driver In Total CEO Plane Crash Was Drunk, Investigators Say

Tyler Durden's picture

The awful news overnight of Total CEO Christophe de Margarie's death in a freak plane crash caused by the jet hitting a snow-plough on the runway has taken a darker twist. As RT reports, Russian prosecutors claim the driver of the snowplough was drunk, and the air traffic controller for the jet was an intern. However, his lawyer, however, says he was completely sober, due to a heart condition preventing him from drinking claiming "he was so sober at the time of the crash," adding "we don't want the blame for the accident falling on an ordinary man." Investigators added that "bad weather conditions and the possibility of a mistake by the pilot will also be considered." ITAR-TASS reports that Putin has sent his condolences and reached out to Francois Hollande, "Vladimir Putin has long known de Margerie and had a close working relationship with him."

The snowplough driver survived (while reports last night said he perished) - If proven guilty, the sentence for the driver under Russian law could be up to seven years in prison.

Video from the terible accident scene:

As RT reports,

Russian prosecutors claim the driver of the snowplow which crashed with Total CEO Christophe de Margerie’s jet was drunk. His lawyer, however, says he was completely sober, due to a heart condition preventing him from drinking.

“My client is suffering from an acute heart condition; he does not drink at all and his relatives and friends can testify to that,” Aleksandr Karabanov, the lawyer, said.

“He was sober at the time of the crash,” he also said, adding that a number of lawyers will be involved in Martynenkov’s defense. “We don’t want the blame for the accident to fall on an ordinary man,” he added.

Karabanov also made clear that he will insist on an independent expertise to determine the presence of alcohol in his client's bloodstream.

Russia’s Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin also told the reporters on Tuesday adding “there is a possibility that a number of airport staff will be suspended from carrying out their duties pending criminal investigation.” He also did not rule out the possibility of new arrests being made during the course of the investigation.

...

It has also been determined that the taxiing shortly before the crash was being coordinated by a traffic control intern, RIA Novosti was told by a source inside Vnukovo. The official spokesman for the airport has declined to comment. Air traffic control personnel will be tested for alcohol and drugs, the investigators said.

The black boxes have been uncovered and are being processed at this time.

And Putin has expressed condolences...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences over the Total CEO's death. TASS cited his spokesman as saying that "Vladimir Putin has long known de Margerie and had a close working relationship with him."

“I am shocked at the news,” the Russian leader conveyed to French President Francois Hollande.

“I ask that you offer my sincerest wishes and condolences to the friends and families of Christophe de Margerie – a renowned French entrepreneur, who has helped spearhead a great number of join projects, which have been the source of a long and fruitful partnership between Russia and France in the energy sphere,” Putin continued.

“When we lost Christophe de Margerie, we lost a real friend to our nation, and we shall hold his memory very dear.”

Additionally, Interfax reports that the black box flight recorders from the Falcon jet will not be opened before French experts' arrival...

Experts of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) will open the flight recorders of the Falcon plane which crashed at the Vnukovo airport late on Monday after French experts' arrival, an IAC spokesman said.

"The IAC has made the decision not to open the flight recorders before French experts' arrival. Further investigation will proceed in cooperation with French colleagues, in compliance with the ICAO standards and with an agreement between the IAC and France's BEA air accident investigation bureau, and on the basis of long-established cooperation," the spokesman said.

He said the BEA has appointed a commissioner for investigating the Falcon crash and five advisors, representing the BEA, Dessault - the plane's developer, and the air company Unijet. They are expected to arrive in Moscow late on Tuesday.

The BEA said that three experts would be sent to Moscow on Tuesday.

...

The flight recorders have been retrieved and taken to the IAC's research and technical center.

Let's play a game!

(1) make a list of all the high level execs at all the oil majors in all the world

(2) ask yourself, "are they stupid?"

(3) ask yourself the primary currency in which they transact

(4) observe the insanity going on with said currency and its issuing bank

(5) make common sense conclusion to act in the best interest of your company, shareholders, directors, etc

(6) ~~ see this happen, in the news, and IN RUSSIA ~~

(7) revise decision 5, continue to engage in BAU

SO ....

All the CEOs in the world are looking to get the hell off the dollar. This will make them all think twice. In a very immediate and real sense. And you know those in power are making phone calls, asking how the wife and kids are doing. You know, just do it isn't forgotten to quickly.

This is about the petro-dollar, 100%, and it happened under Putin's nose. Putin ain't stupid. Do they really allow high level execs to process through insecure and incompetant airports on a daily basis?

The likelyhood that Russia is in bed with Western leaders just went way, way up. Russia's entire economy runs on oil and I don't mean in the obtuse sense, I mean it is the primary source of funds for government, etc. This is nothing but bad for Russia as they will continue to struggle with dollar denominated global sales.

What we have now is a plan to carve up another part of the world and split the spoils with Putin and Obama playing good cop/bad cop.

Regards,

Cooter

They will turn this whole thing into a pissing contest of whether, or not, the driver of the snowplough was drunk rather than an objective assessment and analysis.

Welcome to Russia.

As soon as I heard of the accident, I bet they would find the plow driver was drunk.   To say drinking is a really big problem in Russia would be a gross understatement.

Of course one must lay blame on the most probable in order to generate the pissing contest. Of course drinking is a big problem but that has absolutely nothing to do with ascertaining the facts of whether the driver was or was not. Generalities have zero impact in determining 'facts'. Facts are objective and verifiable, conjecture is just that, possible guesswork.

I'm a pilot.  The reason the ground controller is important is that he would be the one to give permission to the snow plough driver to cross the runway.  Everybody that drives around at a major airport is on radio, and no one crosses a runway unless ground control says so.  Unless some kind of foul play occurred, it's the ground controller's responsibility, period.

Unfortunately, most of what you'll get on ZH is conjecture from arm chair 'experts" who don't even bother to verify their "facts" before spouting them on the web.

I include the authors here as well as the commentators  This place is berift of any serious analysis, and frankly it's a joke to think the NSA or whoever cares about what passes for "information" here, since what little there is gets immediately buried under a heap of wild-eyed speculation with no basis other than some self-appointed guru's opinion.

Frankly, I pity the NSA ops who drew this assignment.  Talk about a career killer.

If they are being deceptive you have to wonder why and consider what that implies. Was it a CIA hit? If so then Putin is covering it up, possibly because he is in such a weak position he is not willing to confront them even when they blow up planes in Russia.

If it was CIA, and other countries determine that to be the case, and Putin does not address it in a firm manner that is several times worse, then Russia loses credibility and future Russian threats may be viewed as just a lot of theater and no more than noise.

These above few posts are really good stuff.

As regards being a state of war, tall Tom, that is exactly why there was such bizarre state level response to the Malaysian plane that was electronically hijacked a few months back. The few thousand Chinese citizens demonstrating angrily in the streets would be absolutely nothing compared to the response if it were determined that the usa  hijacked, kidnapped and killed all those passengers.

While we all sit at our computers and read and ponder this stuff, you all can bet your bottom dollar that every intelligence agency on the planet worth its salt will know within a few hours  all the particulars of this accident just as many others in the past.

The key metrics for us who follow these things are the data, the source of the data, any contradictions that always arise, the amount of coverage provided, amongst other aspects.

First Putin does not have to go nuclear immediately.

Second, the time for Putin/Russia to do something was years ago, take your pick Yugoslavia, Iraq2, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, Africa (multiple places)

In other words if "they" did this they did it where and when they did because the know Putin has become their bitch (or just a bitch).  I do not like that but that is the way it is.  Putin would lie about it to his country to save face and to stay position.  I have begun to think Putin is much more worried about what is good for the elites in Russia than he is about the common person.

It is easy to get lost at an unfamilar airport even take off from a taxi way sometimes.  However no pilot would take off from an unplowed airstrip. or even partially plowed.

The story is that the snow plow was clearing the runway which is normal and that the tower turned him on to an inactive runway,, maybe.  Or the pilot mistakenly took a turn down the wrong way and took off from an inactive runway that way cleared but still had a plow on it 2/3rd of the way down the runway.  That is a bunch of circumstances however it does happen just not very often.  Very bad hit though too many moving parts.

New game, please do not stop trying to be informed. Yes, in this so-called information age it is very easy to get buried in data - frequently conflicting. However, people who wish to control the narrative find it WAY WAY more effective to  poison the well, distract, baffle with bullshit, than to merely silence  the truth getting out.

Observing and noting patterns over time can give real clues to the bigger picture, including this case of the killed Total CEO.

Total CEO crash: Investigators say snowplow driver ‘drunk’, lawyer rejects claim

“We don’t want the blame for the accident to fall on an ordinary man,” he added.

what lawyer probably meant is this: my client is a drunkard but he was sober that night because his doctor told him to stop drinking due to weak heart

Now everyone will assume it's completely "normal" when the snowplow driver dies of a "heart attack" before the investigation is complete.

If Oswald had had a "heart condition", it would have substantially eliminated the EXTREME suspicion that his murder by Jack Ruby (born Jacob Leon Rubenstein) was pretty much conclusive evidence of a conspiracy in the JFK assassination.

I strongly suspect Walter Reuther got Wellstoned, just months after the UAW broke ranks with the AFL/CIO and spoke out against the Vietnam War.

About the same time, also just after coming out against the Vietnam War, Martin Luther King and RFK each got "Wellstonized by other means".

The President of Ecuador nearly got Wellstoned last year when they thought Snowden was on the Presidential Plane.  Almost out of fuel when Austria finally let him land.

Who else?  I'm not a great list keeper, used to have a wife for that, but it seems like I saw enough of these to warn that death by private airplane crash is not uncommon when people speak out against the Empire.

1)  It's the tower's job to make sure the runway is clear - not "think" it's clear, not "supposed" to be clear, but visually verifiy it is clear - PERIOD.  ONLY then are they supposed to give the clearance to the waiting aircraft to takeoff, land, etc.

2)  It's the pilot's job to make sure the runway is clear - NO MATTER WHAT THE TOWER SAYS.  Otherwise, you will be the first on the scene of the accident.

The tower once cleared me to land, and when I looked [I always check], there was already a plane on final approach.  If I had blindly followed the tower's advice, I would have turned right in front of the guy.

It usually takes 3 to make an accident like this: tower, pilot and other [pilot | driver | goose | etc.].

I have been in Russia and I can tell you that drunk driving is taken seriously there, at least by responsible people.  Unlike the USA where  you can blow 0.07 and not be in trouble, in Russia, the only acceptable number for blood alcohol content is 0.00 .  If the cops have any reason to believe you have been drinking they haul you off to jail, period, then sort it out from there.

I had a guy who was driving my friend and I, despite the fact he wasn't going to drive us anywhere until 7 or 8 pm he wouldn't have ANY alcohol the day he was driving, not even a glass of beer at noontime.

Basically true.  In the US, there exist people, out on the street, who have had a dozen or more DUIs - sometimes with licenses intact.  An absurd laxity that surely kills several hundred more people a year.

But Russia has a law against 'promoting' the gay 'lifestyle' - which, of course, can be said without hyperbole to be a million times worse that not taking drunk driving seriously because your jails are too full of black kids who smoked a joint and illegal immigrant coke traffickers.

Indeed, de-dollarization is a moral imperative, as the US government is now, and has for some time been an oligarchical, central banker/MIC/Israeli occupied cryptofascist enterprise.

Chances are he wasnt drunk and it was failure of tower and pilot for not verifying it was clear. As well, letme induldge our tinfoil hat wearing friends, cia and gru operate in both countries. Many times Russia is blamed for incidences in UK, US and the like while CIA is blamed in Russia. When you have travel system were anyone can enter, chances are, you will get people you dont want in. In US, many incidences happen and no matter how much you try to prevent it, something may happen anyway. 9/11 is an example.

But this case, may just be a coincidence. On Gazeta.ru, they stated from authorities that alcohol may been a factor on various levels, not just the plow driver. As well, airport management may get thrown under the bus too.
