ISIS Claims It Hit US Embassy In Baghdad's Green Zone

Tyler Durden's picture

"They know Baghdad. They've lived in Baghdad," said Lt.Col Oliver North, warning over the weekend that sources in Iraq believed ISIS was planning a "major attack" against the embassy in Baghdad. Yesterday we get some confirmation - via ISIS - that they did in fact reportedly strike the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. As Inquisitr reports, on Tuesday the Islamist militant group took credit for a mortar attack against the embassy in Baghdad. The group bragged about the attack on social media, claiming that there were likely casualties - “Four rockets strike Green Zone in #Baghdad; helicopters hovering over the Green Zone; ambulances heading that way after strikes!!” one ISIS militant noted on Twitter. As North concludes, "They are at the gates of Baghdad. They’re coming for us."

Clips posted by ISIS of the mortar attack...

ISIS militant Social media claiming the hits... (via ISIS Tracker)

As Inquisitr reports,

ISIS has reportedly struck the U.S. embassy in Baghdad in what could be the furthers incursion yet into Iraq’s capital.

On Tuesday the Islamist militant group took credit for a mortar attack against the embassy in Baghdad. The group bragged about the attack on social media, claiming that there were likely casualties.

...

ISIS has been increasing its attacks on Baghdad in recent weeks, including a wave of car bomb and mortar attacks on Sunday that left at least 150 people killed. Four car bombs exploded in Shia districts of Baghdad, leaving 36 people dead and 98 wounded in a span of two hours.

ISIS fighters have been encamped in suburbs surrounding Baghdad, and earlier this month sent four mortar shells into the Green Zone, the heavily protected location of the U.S. Embassy and other government buildings.

This is likely no surprise as Lt.Col Oliver North has warned...that sources in Iraq believed ISIS was planning a “major attack” against the embassy in Baghdad.

“They know Baghdad. They’ve lived in Baghdad,” North said of the militants reportedly planning the attack.

They are at the gates of Baghdad. They’re coming for us,” he added.

But North’s predictions were also tinged in political criticism, as he used the prediction as a way to attack President Obama and allege a conspiracy to let ISIS take over Iraq for his own benefit.

“I don’t think he gives a d**n,” North said. “I think he’s hoping that he can hold the lid on this until after this election so it won’t be just another disaster for this administration.”

FYI, since the 90s, Oliver North also traipses around Neocon Bible Thumpers -- as a BAC: "Born-Again Christian".

It's the Neo/Zio-Cons front-running Latin America's "LIBERATION THEOLOGY" in the US.  As a religious "Product", Jesus had to be "re-positioned" and "re-branded" -- to suit TPTB, lest the Plebs use Jesus for "Liberation", the way they did in Latin America.

/Jesus is now a Right-Winger Neo/Zio-Con, don't ya know?  You can spot them with the dual JC sticker next to "Support Our Troops" sticker on their shiny city-SUV. /sarc.

Totally reminds me of "Many shall come in my name...but by their fruits shall ye know them."

I'm confused by the rationale in this thread.  Obama, to prevent this, should have done what?  Keep troops there, send more to die, or somehow undo the 2003 invasion?

I thought we all leaned towards non-interventionism here.  Let the embassy fall, it's worst example of imperialism and hubris.  We can buy oil from ISIS on the cheap, to hell with the saudis.

Isis is not a threat to us.  Russia might be if we keep poking at it.  We haven't sent any new american troops, save some "advisors" and such, to fight any new wars in 6 years.  That's a good thing.  I don't think Obama can take credit, the American people are just fed up (remember the Syria backlash), they don't want to go to war.

Let Isis have the middle east if they can take it, I'm sure oil will get cheaper (Isis sells at a discount), and it's not like we have a problem doing business with bad people anyway. They're a bigger threat to Russia and China than us, I'd say.  Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll wipe out Israel. :P

Obama could have done many things differently:

1)  Not sent so much support the way of the "moderate" rebels over the past 2 years (many of whom have now joined/allied with ISIS);

2)  Supported the Maliki government instead of consistently undermining them as a way to pressure Iran;

3)  Warn against Saudi/Qatari funding of ISIS and other radicalized groups in Syria;

4)  Stop Turkey from supplying, housing, and doing business with ISIS;

5)  Meaningfully support the Kurds.

Won't speak for anyone else, but I am generally isolationist.  Problem is that O is intervening all over the place--we have almost 4k troops in West Africa on a "humanitarian mission" for chrissakes.  Have you been paying attention?

Wed, 10/22/2014 - 10:57 | 5363320 BKbroiler
BKbroiler's picture

none of those arguments are very good:

1)  Not sent so much support the way of the "moderate" rebels over the past 2 years (many of whom have now joined/allied with ISIS);

Beats sending troops. Doing nothing would have been best, but with the political uproar it would have been impossible.

2)  Supported the Maliki government instead of consistently undermining them as a way to pressure Iran;

Maliki was the most hated leader in Iraq. ever.

3)  Warn against Saudi/Qatari funding of ISIS and other radicalized groups in Syria;

Warn the Saudis and Qataris? That would work?

4)  Stop Turkey from supplying, housing, and doing business with ISIS;

How?

5)  Meaningfully support the Kurds.

And go against both the Iraqi and Turkish gov?

If you're isolationist, then you should be cheering on our diminishing presence.  Let it all burn.

Beats sending troops. Doing nothing would have been best, but with the political uproar it would have been impossible.

Defeatist argument.  Doing nothing would have been better, and most Americans didn't support a war.  The only ones pushing for involvemnt were/are the usual hawks--McCain/Graham/certain special interest groups.

Maliki was the most hated leader in Iraq. ever.

Bit of hyperbole.  Ever heard of this "Saddam" character?  Or the stooges the Brits set up? We set up an unworkable federal system in Iraq, and to no surprise, it failed.  Maliki is no darling but the game was rigged against him.  KSA and Israel don't want a powerful Iraq and we made sure it wasn't. Didn't the US pick Maliki?

Warn the Saudis and Qataris? That would work?

US has quite a bit of influence over KSA, whether or not it chooses to exercise it.  Aren't they in the process of crashing their oil-based economy for the US?  KSA gov't is corrupt and would not even survive without US military aid, especially internally against revolutionaries.  The sociopolitical situation in KSA is bad, they rule through force and fear.

As far as Turkey goes, they do seem like a loose cannon lately (probably to their detriment), but the US gov't hasn't checked them at all.  Even US media gives no mention of the amount of support and contact elements in Turkey have with ISIS.

Turkey can be motivated through the EU membership carrot/stick.  Europe should definitely be on board due to the threat that ISIS poses to them by radicalizing their growing immigrant populations.  The Kurdish question is easy--why should we give two shits what Ankara and Baghdad think?  Baghdad is Iran's, and could fall to ISIS sooner than people want to admit.  Turkey seems to do whatever the hell it wants anymore--Kurdish statehood could be leverage against their craziness.  Besides, the Kurds are a state at this juncture in the north of Iraq and Syria, just as ISIS is.  Syria and Iraq have broken up.

The House of Saud along with their Qatar henchmen are the backers of ISIS, all they want is Assad out of the way to get that Pipeline to Turkey.  The Iraqies are a threat because they have become friendly with the Iranians so they must be busted up.  This is why we have repeadly done "strikes" on ISIS locations after they have left and "mistakenly" dropped ammo at the "wrong" location that fell into their hands.  The Kenyan is supporting them.

Bremer's role as the head of the CPA is notable for being the subject of much criticism. Large sums of money have been reported to have gone missing under Bremer's leadership Bremer's attempts at privatizing much of Iraq's infrastructure and mineral wealth were also highly criticized and Bremer's decision to disband the Iraqi Army is widely credited for fueling the Iraqi insurgency against the American occupation.

All the things you say are eminently reasonable.

Indeed, it would be very easy to cut off their "smuggling operation" by not allowing them to get the oil to the buyers.

I will not say who (figure it out), but the recipient does not want this flow cut off. They are perfectly happy to be getting cut-rate petroleum.

To keep it simple, the answer to your question is that all this is deliberate.

the obvious pattern is to award "defense contractors" massive monies to construct these castles in the war zones, occupy then abandon, and use other "defense contractors" weaponry to destroy what was built.

rinse repeat profit.  perpetual wars for perpetual corporate profits.

that folks willingly volunteer to play at war for the elite's amusements, well, that's just gravy.

One would have thought that the U.S would learn it's lesson from the first Vietnam, but it looks like we have to go through it all again. Serving for the MIC in their never ending wars is a good way for indebted youngsters to pay off their student loans, and if they happen to die doing so then their government sponsored insurance policies will make sure the bankers get paid. So we have that going for us.

Let's don't forget that IS is enjoying the swimming pool at the US Benghazi embassy. I think that the Baghdad version cost more than $500 million. Just the amount we sent Grumman for bombs to give to the Iraqi army. Will we use them against our own embassy lest IS enjoy it? Worse will IS end up with the bombs and embassy, a 1 billion addition to the right side of the ledger?

I was stunned that we were going to spend yet another $500 million arming the moderate rebels in Syria. Just like if we trained the south Vietnam Nam army they would take care of the north. Yes we are repeating Vietnam Nam....cubed.

" Lt.Col Oliver North"?

Oliver L. North, a Marine lieutenant colonel assigned to the National Security Council staff beginning in 1981 until he was fired on November 25, 1986, was the White House official most directly involved in secretly aiding the contras, selling arms to Iran, and diverting Iran arms sales proceeds to the contras.

It is Lt. Col. Oliver North. It is not his son if he has one. Oliver North was not only an operative in the Reagan White House but he has been a Republican Party pundit for as long as I can remember him, being introduced to the public during the Iran-Contra Scandal.

He taught the public how to lie on the witness stand without fear of being prosecuted for perjury.

"I DO NOT RECALL."

Yeah. It was an education. It was just like Slick Willie proclaiming that Oral Sex is not sex(???). Yes. My public education has been...er...well it has demonstrated that the Government is by no means to be trusted and is a very bad for anyone to place their faith upon.

So I thank God Almighty for Ollie North. He has been a good example...of what not to be.

No way. You don't seem to understand the value of having an apparently strong enemy. This production is all about undermining self-determination of the people of the Middle-East, while using it to instill fear in the West.

Nothing strengthens a government more than having to fight a scary enemy. ISIS was created by TPTB in order ensure there is never peace in the ME, as that's where all of the cheapest oil to extract is (other than security costs). Just like with Germany, Japan, Korea, et al., the US will never leave the region willingly.

See Brzezinski's "The Grand Chessboard" for details.
