Schizophrenic Silver Slammed On Surging Volume

Tyler Durden's picture

What a difference 24 hours makes. Yesterday, ECB rumors sparked precious metal buying on heavy volume. Today, more denials of ECB corporate bond buying combined with a slightly-hotter-than-expected inflation print (i.e. lower odds of Fed unleashing QE4) has sent silver (and gold) tumbling... on very heavy volume...

Silver volatility getting extreme...

The vol in Gold is just as wild...

This is Fight Club...hit me.

On the other side Silver's industrial demand will be depressed going forward.

So, I sold PSLV to get some SRTY a few weeks ago.  I'm into Silver thru CEF only now.

Once the index short pays off then its back to Silver at the lows and Silver Surf it back up baby !

Always hold the physical and never sell it.  Monster logic.

Use paper to manipulate the price and make the clueless think it is an unappealing "investment".

Of course I haven't held physical since that day I had to decide whether to save my PM and guns or my iPhone during that unfortunate boating accident.  Luckily I chose the iPhone so I can still play angry birds.

It actually makes sense to me that what they call the "silver price" (paper silver hypothecated 70-100x) should be dropping, since the credit behind it is steadily weakening. Harvey O. thinks that this credit will blow up completely, this year. (My thought is 1Q15.). Too bad price discovery of physical silver awaits either Shanghai market growth or that explosion. But you won't have to think too long and hard to find the best credit-isolation trade, just be sure to read the fine print...

Ag annual mine production is around 25k tons but yes there has been a supply deficit over the past ten years according to the silver institute.

https://www.silverinstitute.org/site/supply-demand/

Question is:  Where has the physical Ag come from to meet that deficit all those years?  China?  Where else?  How will it be met in the future?  Economic collapse means much lower industrial demand so a supply surplus?  Important questions for physical silver investors and I am one of them

Wed, 10/22/2014 - 12:40 | 5363897 Bastiat
Bastiat's picture

Lower industrial activity means lower copper demand means lower copper production.  Most silver is produced as a by product, primarily a by product of copper production.  So you have an offsetting supply reduction.

Wed, 10/22/2014 - 13:09 | 5364070 Latitude25
Latitude25's picture

Sure.  And how quickly will copper production slow down after a market crash?  I would guess that a crash would cause an immediate drop in price but not an immediate slow down in production thereby generating a surplus of copper and silver leading to a temporary glut of both.
