Dr Craig Spencer, 33, who returned to the U.S. ten days ago from Guinea, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in midtown Manhattan on Thursday and is being cared for in isolation.
The doctor flew to Africa on September 18 to treat patients in Guinea with non-profit organization, Medecins San Frontieres (MSF).
The medic works at Columbia University Medical Center and originally comes from Detroit, Michigan.
Investigators were taking the case seriously because it is not believed that the doctor self-quarantined on his return from Guinea, CNN reported.
On September 18, Dr Spencer tweeted a picture of himself wearing a full yellow hazmat suit and face mask with the message: 'Off to Guinea with Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Please support organizations that are sending support or personnel to West Africa, and help combat one of the worst public health and humanitarian disasters in recent history.'
On October 16, he checked in at a hotel in Brussels, Belgium, presumably on his return journey from Guinea to the U.S.

Full Statement on Patient at Bellevue Hospital
Today, EMS HAZ TAC Units transferred to Bellevue Hospital a patient who presented a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms.
The patient is a health care worker who returned to the U.S. within the past 21 days from one of the three countries currently facing the outbreak of this virus.
The patient was transported by a specially trained HAZ TAC unit wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). After consulting with the hospital and the CDC, DOHMH has decided to conduct a test for the Ebola virus because of this patient’s recent travel history, pattern of symptoms, and past work. DOHMH and HHC are also evaluating the patient for other causes of illness, as these symptoms can also be consistent with salmonella, malaria, or the stomach flu.
Preliminary test results are expected in the next 12 hours.
Bellevue Hospital is designated for the isolation, identification and treatment of potential Ebola patients by the City and State. New York City is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of all New Yorkers.
As a further precaution, beginning today, the Health Department’s team of disease detectives immediately began to actively trace all of the patient’s contacts to identify anyone who may be at potential risk. The Health Department staff has established protocols to identify, notify, and, if necessary, quarantine any contacts of Ebola cases.
The Health Department is also working closely with HHC leadership, Bellevue’s clinical team and the New York State Department of Health to ensure that all staff caring for the patient do so while following the utmost safety guidelines and protocols.

The chances of the average New Yorker contracting Ebola are extremely slim. Ebola is spread by directly touching the bodily fluids of an infected person. You cannot be infected simply by being near someone who has Ebola.

The only improvement I see over the Federal response is that NY is shutting down the alley and looks like they are going to go to those places and test. I never heard of any before and after testing at Duncan's place which is what proper scientists and medical people would do. You want to see if you can find live virus and you want to study where it is...from the tooth brush and toilet bowl to bedding and kitchen surfaces. what i fear is the cases that we don't know about, and our government has proven incompetence in preventing cases from entering the country.
i have no reason to doubt that ebola is difficult to transmit ebola, RELATIVE to a typical cold/flu bug anyways. i also believe that once isolated, the "folks" most at risk are the healthcare workers. but how many other doctors have gone to save the world from doom but are instead bringing the doom back home? how many other west africans, with the money to do so, are fleeing the continent?
with our nonexistent containment (border and customs monitoring and mandatory 21-day quarantine for anyone who has passed through west africa... just common sense), combined with the exponential growth of ebola cases in west africa, it's only a matter of time before there is another case in a major city center.
what happens when the next ebola carrier decides not to be treated at a hospital and stays home instead? what happens if there is a case that goes undetected until the person dies or even afterwards? bodies are so contagious that they have infected hundreds of health and morgue workers in full hazmat suits.

I am the author of multiple Ebola simulations using an SEIR compartment model.
Our US model shows a long time course for a hypothetical Ebola pandemic... In our simulations, the abolute earliest Incidence would peak is Summer 2015 (absolute earliest extremely aggressive experimental parameters). This model is pretty unlikely.
Our models show West Africa's outbreak incidence peaks around late March 2015, assuming all interventions fail.
Our more recent and more precise simulations for the United States (utilizing WHO/NEJM parameters) show incidence peaking at 429 days post disease introduction in the US (using R0 of 1.84, incubation period of 9.4 days, infectious period of 8.2 days, and mortality rate of 70.8%). This model is seeded with 10 infectious individuals in New York City on Day 0... Again, in this most recent U.S. Ebola model, incidence peaks on Day 429.
The point is that if Ebola were to spread in the U.S., it would have a time course of 18 to 36 months start to finish. It is a long time scale we are looking at here. (using disease parameters from West Africa, and assuming all interventions failed).
Keep in mind that West Africa is 3 to 9 months 'ahead' of us on the clock, so to speak. Hopefully, the outbreak is stopped in W Africa by Q1 2015. Ignore media hyperventilating and idiocy -- it's easy to understand. Ebola either gets shut down by Q1/Q2 2015 (best-case), or else we have a black swan event that spans several years (worst-case).
