Smart People Listen To Radiohead, Dumb People Listen To Beyoncé, Study Finds
Now you can substantiate to today’s generation why that '60s and '70s era’s music was objectively "better," as JPMorgan's CIO Michael Cembalest has previously noted, and furthermore, researchers also found that popular music has gotten a lot louder (as SAT scores have plunged.. hhmm?) However, as Consequence of Sound notes, a software application writer by the name of Virgil Griffith has charted musical tastes based on the average SAT scores of various college institutions... and the results are.. interesting. Bob Dylan, The Shins, Radiohead, and Counting Crows are the favorite bands of smart people. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne, Beyoncé, The Used, and gospel music comes in at the lower end of the spectrum — or, as Griffith puts it, is music for dumb people.
Via Consequence of Sound blog,
Among other interesting revelations from the Griffith’s chart: Smart people prefer John Mayer over Pink Floyd; rock titans like Tool, System of a Down, and Pearl Jam fall right in the middle — so, music for average people?; and people still listen to Switchfoot.
* * *
Of course, correlation is not causation but...
As JPMorgan's Michael Cembalest has previously noted, there has been a “progressive homogenization of the musical discourse”, a process which has resulted in music becoming blander and louder.
Bring those classic rock and R&B playlists back
Now you can substantiate to today’s generation why that era’s music was objectively “better”.
The Million Song Dataset is a database of western popular music produced from 1955 to 2010. As described in Scientific Reports (affiliated with the publication Scientific American), researchers developed algorithms to see what has changed over time, focusing on three variables: timbre, pitch and loudness. Timbre is a proxy for texture and tone quality, terms which reflect the variety and richness of a given sound. Higher levels of timbre most often result from diverse instrumentation (more than one instrument playing the same note). Pitch refers to the tonal structure of a song: how the chords progress, and the diversity of transitions between chords. Since the 1960’s, timbral variety has been steadily declining, and chord transitions have become narrower and more predictable.
The researchers also found that popular music has gotten a lot louder. The median recorded loudness value of songs by year is shown in the second chart. One illustrative example: in 2008, Metallica fans complained that the Guitar Hero version of its recent album sounded better than it did on CD. As reported in Rolling Stone, the CD version was re-mastered at too high a decibel level, part of the Loudness Wars affecting popular music.
Overall, the researchers concluded that there has been a “progressive homogenization of the musical discourse”, a process which has resulted in music becoming blander and louder. This might seem like a reactionary point of view for an adult to write, but the data does seem to back me up on this. All of that being said, I do like that Method Man-Mary J. Blige duet.

Ha Ha- - Green Day at the bottom of the list.
oh wait - they are middle of the pack. Never mind.
Great music band!
I consider them easy listening. Great for covering over white noise, since all the songs just blend together at a lower volume and the words don't stick out too much, so it isn't distracting.
Green Day sucks
Pretend wanna be Americanized douchbaggery Sex Pistols tribute fraud band. Nirvana at least had something there.
Sorry Billy Joe douche bag your not even in the same universe as The Ramones or Pistols. Little jerk off gives endless pro-Obola rants showing that he is corporate MIC rock like U2.
All the California 60's bands were sons and daughters of See Eye Aye, MIC, govt stooges and elites. These bands were created along with the hippie scene to water down and marginalized protest against LBJ's $$$ and narcotics running war.
http://www.davesweb.cnchost.com/nwsltr93.html
Dave McGowan connected the dots pretty well.

Armchair music snobbery! THe Ramones were a pile of Nazi trash. Oh they're soooo kewl because they're a daring bunch if bigots!
YAY!
INstead of like, you know- facing the world as your own which takes a REAL set of balls, hide behind a dangerous rabid misguided group and the tweakers like some pretentious bafoon.
the damned are my favorite punk band.
I gotta new rose....
A little bit of the old Ludwig Van?
Music isn't getting "louder", that's ridiculous.
Anyway, here’s that San Fran hippie band back in 1974….When’s the last time you saw a 20 year old kid standing in front of something like this?
16-bit, CD quality audio is still the digital standard even though no one listens to CDs anymore. The MP3 files you buy on iTunes etc. are based off a track mastered to the CD format.
Because no one listens to music on decent stereo equipment anymore either -it's all those little clock-radio things and headphones- tracks today are released with the signal levels jacked way up so that they sound louder on dinky equipment. The higher signal levels come at the expense of dynamic range because the 16bit format is a fairly limited capacity and you can't have a lot of both. Another unnecessary triumph of convenience over quality.
DVD-A is a nice format that never caught on. The world has moved backwards when it comes to quality sound.
Dylan's Greatest Hits was the first album I bought back in the 70s and it
is still my favorite after all these years. When I went to see Dylan live back in the 90s I was clearly the youngest person in the lineup to buy tickets. The old folks smiled at me when I joined them in the lineup. I had to take an elderly artist with me when the concert date rolled up because I could not find anyone else that liked Dylan's stuff enough to see him live.
Funny story about Bob fin 2009. He is on tour and they stop somewhere in South Jersey (Long Branch) for a gig. Bob goes and takes a walk in the poruing rain around to get some exercise. The local 24 year old female cop must have thought he was an old vagrant and ask for ID. He takes him back to the tour bus and shows them his ID. He did not make a fuss about it.
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/jersey-homeowner-calls-cops-bob-dylan/story?id...
Very cool story about Bob Dylan. I can just see him sitting back and laughing all the way back to the tour buses. If the police officer had asked him to sing a few bars she would have likley realized who he was. Dylan is a funny guy for sure.
I think the article is right on the money. I'm late 60's. I remember when music was MUSIC.
Fuck all this shit music of today, especially the last 10 years.
whatever...
Waaah! The elistist wannabe boomer garbage who thinks he's condescending but is actually patronizing.
You people are so fucking STUPID to think that a rich inebriated rock star blathering on incessantly like the arrogant asshole that he is about "non-materialism".
John Lennon and his mass media totally made an ass out of you guys.
One of my favorites is Stevie Nicks, condescending because like, she writes her own music. like HOLY SHIT BE DAMMED. There are 78 MILLION ***BABY*** boomers. I'm glad at least one of you pampered draft dodging warmongering "non-materialistic" subprime backed teaser rate funded real estate flipping economically illiterate sheltered egotistical morons with everything handed to them is literate and can read sheet music.
Well I'll be darned!
FUnny, I grew up in the 80's and the 90s. Gosh. I hate to say this, we had it WAY better than you ever did- even when the boomer influence used the press to put the younger generation down in order to feel better about yourselves..
Gosh. Smashing Pumpkins who? Tori Amos who? Guns and Roses? Jewel could hold a note. Busta Rhymes. I knew who Black Eyed Peas were in the 90's- they were always THAT good. Saw Blind Melon live. Fiona Apple. Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey- yes these women next to Arethra Franklin are some of the best vocalists in the industry. Sarah McLachlan could hold a note. Michael Jackson. PRINCE. Cranberries.
I listened to the Verve in college, they were always good. Front 242. Eurasure. New Order. Skinny Puppy. NIN. Someone said Beastie Boys.
Perfect Circle. Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Dave Matthews Band? Blues Travelers? Atari Teenage Riot.
Um, I kind of got an A in Calculus and I listen to Mars Volta and Muse on occasion. Oh wait, the boomers could afford college- but chose to do drugs and be lazy instead. I still don't know what's sooooo special about you people.
> Waaah! blah blah blah yammer yammer yammer... people.
lol...generalize much?
uh, no. Considering that I actually can READ and PLAY music? Like who cares about ALL of this if I can just hop on the piano and play whatever I want?
The boomer dogs are the best to pick on because they're so arrogant in their subjective simpledom, followed by their almighty hipster allstars.
> Um, I kind of got an A in Calculus
:o ....aaahahahahhahahah ahahahhhahahahahhahahhaa :l ahahahahaahahhahahhahahaha
blahblahblahb
So here are the choice of takeaways from this:
1 Black music makes you stupid.
2 Black people make stupid music.
3 Black people are stupid
4 Green day is about to be the next elevator music.
Vote below
I'm surprised even Rap (noise) makes it on the chart.
American Idiot(s)...
Nuff said
The Doors are right around the 1000 mark. I don't think people who listen to them are dumb, just stoned.
Most of the "dumb bands" I've never even heard of. The ones I have heard of, most of them I fuckin' hate.
GNR? This is no study. This is an opinion poll.
Neil Young?
Metheney?
Django?
Benny Goodman?
Al De Meola?
Scot Joplin?
Steve Morse?
Hiromi?
Ludivico Einaudi?
Amethystium?
What the fuck is this "poll"?
+1. Now I have some other artists to listen to that I did not know about before. I might add Vicci Martinez to the list.
Ah, Django! The greatest guitarist you've never heard of and he only had the use of TWO FINGERS on his left (fretting) hand. Genius!
'all guitarists' love django. fantastic player.
Wagner?
Ja, ausgezeichnet!
He was a schnitzelface after all. Ja. I am poking fun at my own heritage here but Germans have told me that I am not German anymore. I guess the DNA changes once you leave a country. Game on then. Henceforth, Germans shall be known as schnitzelfaces. And for that matter get that Hillary Clinton look alike that is Angela Merkel out of office.

Listen Zero's.
Let's try an experiment. Let's list our race and IQ. OK?
Race: Indian, IQ: 146.
http://www.eutimes.net/2009/11/iq-by-country/
avg IQ in India is 81. 13 pts above imbecile. congrats!
Listen Sauce.
Come'on man. Play nice. List your race/IQ.
Race: Skateboarder
Intelligence Quotient: Intelligence Dividend / Intelligence Divisor
Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.
please stop feeding the troll bangalore
Obama voter. 11
Listen Bangalore.
I think posting something like this actually discredits your claimed IQ...I think some one with and IQ of 146 might see how pretentious such an expirament is. Then again I know a guy with an IQ of over 140 who is in jail for selling drugs. Actually, I was in the gifted program at my school for students with IQ's over 130 and most of them were imbeciles with the awareness of a stick. IQ is not equal to intelligence, I'm talking real intelligence. Wisdom, awareness, consciousness ect. ect.
Human. 150
Listen Smoke.
No man. Your real race, like white, black, Indian, etc...
Listen! NEVER think of yourself in terms of numbers.
heh...relating race to IQ...what an absolutely moronic thing to do...
Listen.
GTF outta here, you're fucking up my experiment.

Good for you. Now go find a "smart people" site.
I say, lets have a weekly ZH Friday night music thread, in memory of Marla.
Do I have a second?
Taking the Seneca the Elder thing literally?
Yeah, might be a welcome respite, everybody can share their favorites.
For example, everybody knows I like rock & roll but they don't know what else I like, like a little big band, a little classical, gospel, country etc...there's really not any "bad music" besides rap of course...and...disco...lol.
Uh oh, my leg is twitching ;-)

VERRRY SCARY
Damn, I love Soca.
However, dumb people are the only ones left who buy music as opposed to downloading it for free so the smartest writers write country and gospel songs even if they know how bad the audience is.
Smart people have higher motivations than money.
Goldman sachs of shit doesn't employ too many dumb people.
perhaps but they are smart drones thieving and conniving in a utter vacuum of wisdom.
[feeling very distressed]
Too bad that The Doors are so far over on the left of the chart.
Their music was - and remains -- fantastic.
That's all I have to say about it.
"The End"
The Doors and Jim were a very weird story. See the Laurel Canyon stuff by Dave McGowan. They come out of nowhere with a formerly nerdy bookish fat Navy brat kid from Florida who becomes idol. YEha that happens everyday.
Jim's admiral dad was leading the US Navy's flotilla that night in the Gulf of Tonkin. He later criticized how the USS Liberty was sold out (by none other than Admiral McCain and LBJ).
Anyway, right about that time Admiral Morrison's career was over and his son started having lots of legal issues at their concerts saying he exposed himself which was bullshit.
Jim was looking at felony jail time in Miami Beach (Dade County) for nothing. Then he goes to Paris to the dual-citizen area of Paris. Dies from a heroin overdose though he never did heroin just drank. No one sees the body.
What do they do to you if they really hate you - get your kid like they did to David Rockefeller a few months ago.
double post...
Ray Manzarek was probably one of the very few baby boomers I did like a lot. Oh wait, he was older.... I tried.
Welcome to the machine...
Yea...um..I didnt need a study.. (or an article for that matter) to clue me in on this little tidbit.
Kinda obvious based on the fans in general.
Where's Kings X?
Being smart is over-rated.
FUCK MUSIC.

I fucking love the Shins.
What about NWA?
straight outta compton was a classic album.
Bangalore : Listen Zero's.
Let's try an experiment. Let's list our race and IQ. OK?
Race: Indian, IQ: 146.
Race: Human
IQ: it varies depending on the moment and / or alcohol intake.
So I guess you're a better person than someone with an IQ of 145 hugh?
Color me unimpressed.
Huh. My wife has gone for contemporary country music.
A few weeks ago, she was listening to the radio, so I grabbed my trusty Yamaha six-string and followed along with the chord progression of successive songs for about an hour.
It was quite revealing. Every song used the same progression, in the same order. Now there were differences in tempo, and maybe one song holds a chord for four beats, while the next one might hold it for eight, or even sixteen- but the progression was identical.
Someone has figured out what seems pleasing to a large contingent of the population, and they play the shit out of it.
But John Mayer over Pink Floyd? I call bullshit!
Disclaimer: I actually like John Mayer. He's been known to make an improptu appearance at http://www.eddiesattic.com/ which is a (relatively) local dive for Atlanteans.
I don't care how smart you are, to place John's considerable talent above that of the collective genius of Waters, Gilmour, Barrett, Wright and Mason is just wrong.
lol. seriously, john mayer is a brilliant guitar player, but his songs are a sort of 'douche rock'.
To be fair, Mayer is 'owned', lock, stock and barrel by his record label. If they have it their way, all you will ever hear from him is what you so aptly describe as douche rock.
Unofficially, John plays a gutsy type of blues that I find very good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4396AVR51tE
This is bogus!
Otherwise we'd see Willie in there somewhere, LOL
Not too worried about Waylon though. (Sorry Waylon, nothin personal)
Back to killin' snakes...

Are you a "good hearted woman, lovin' a good timin' man" or what?
Wasn't dissing Willie, by the way.
Back to killin' snakes...
What a fucking load of bullshit. Jeeezuz.... ZH, sometimes you gotta edit your shit. Please don't give space to this useless mumbo-jumbo statistics shit. PLEASE.
Ramones!!! Gaba gaba hey.
I always did enjoy a bit of the Ludwig van...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zucBfXpCA6s
But I could just as easily enjoy Paranoid Android, so there you go.
Here is what fascists listen to:
Throughout the war years, it was German policy to suppress the music, or at least tame it. This resulted in some remarkable decrees, among them the clauses of a ban promulgated by a Nazi gauleiter in Bohemia and recalled (faithfully, he assures us—“they had engraved themselves deeply on my mind”) by the Czech dissident Josef Skvorecky in the introduction to his novella The Bass Saxophone. They are worth quoting in full:
+1 for that. I thought I was doing OK with Schnitzelface.
The fact that most politicians seem to want to have current 'new breed' musical acts played at or actually at their campaign events proves to me that the music of today is shit. In the 'old days' they wanted the best bands dead because their messaging in their music was wising people up to the bullshit political agendas.
In all fairness there are plenty of songs that have no 'message to the people' and are really great songs but the best songs have both elements of socially redeeming value and just a plain awesome song.
wow those people were trippin'...
Lol @ all the people in this thread who are in denial and spouting off their favorite rock bands that didn't make the list. Rest assured that they fall closely in with all the other related bands, which is to say that you are of average intelligence at best.
It's unfortunate that they only covered a handful of pop music bands rather than going into more detail and covering a wider variety of genres of modern music. I'd be curious to know the average IQ of a death metal vs a gabber listener, for example. It would also be interesting to cover different periods of classical music. :-)
For pure intellectually stimulating music that also happens to also be some of the most beautiful ever written, I find J. S. Bach to be in a class beyond all others.
hey, its ebolatime, its time for dooooom
electric wizard - time to die:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiDTHU09PpY
Ummmm... i have Lil Wayne and Counting Crows on my Mp3 player... shit.
Epic logic fail. The SAT focus is on vocbulary skills and does not have a science section. So the test is not about how smart people are but how well you write.
It has a "math" section. As I recall, the "math" section does not focus on vocabulary skills. And, I would like to suggest, for your consideration, that how well you write is a direct indicator of your "intelligence", because it demonstrates how well you convert cognition into organized output, arguably the most important type of "intelligence".
Music is like communicating with passwords only . This has unintended results. See
http://andreswhy.blogspot.com/2014/10/passwords-to-babel.html
Intelligent people listen to jazz and classical music.
I actually believe that jazz and classical music are very intellectual genres of music, if there is such a thing. I had a john coltrane phase early on in my guitar playing days till he blew my mind out and I ran back to southern rock and thrashing electric guitars and stayed dumb and happy.
Uh,
Only Beethoven is listed for classical music? What about Bach, Mozart,Chopin, Scubert, Schumann,Lizst, Mendelssohn ........
Can I just say, Beethoven? Smart people don't listen to Radiohead. They listen to Beethoven. And Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, Sebelius. Really smart people actually listen, believe it or not, to Prokofiev.
BTW, some really smart people listen to Beethoven AND AC/DC.
I think Beethoven would have loved to hear and been very flattered by "Roll Over Beethoven" by Chuck Berry and would have been intrigued by AC/DC.
agreed. some of the old classical greats would have loved the blues/jazz that came later.
What about listening to King Crimson? What does that make you?
old
:( I'm only 34.
"What does that make you? " Ummm, a 21st Century Schizoid Man with Confusion as my Epitaph type of moonchild?

The Beastie Boys said it best...
Cause I drink it anytime - and anyplace
When it's time to get ill - I pour it on my face
Monkey tastes Def when you pour it on ice
Come on y'all it's time to get nice
Coolin' by the lockers getting kind of funky
Me and the crew - we're drinking Brass Monkey
This girl walked by - she gave me the eye
I reached in the locker - grabbed the Spanish Fly
I put it with the Monkey - mixed it in the cup
Went over to the girl, "Yo baby, what's up?"
I offered her a sip - the girl she gave me lip
It did begin the stuff wore in and now she's on my tip
All of you, turn off the music and the lights and go to bed!
When the musics over we'll turn out the lights dude!
Smart people listen to U2? That's how you know this study is fucked up
Dumb people will pay $2500 to hear Beyonce' lip sync. Dumb people will pay $10,000 for a tent at Outlands circa 2007 to listen to poor rich inebriated rock star Thom Yorke wail on about fake plastic trees while millions were going homeless at the dawn of the subprime collapse.
Alright you folks have pretty great links in there. How about Nine Inch Nails? Reznor was a bad ass and this one sums it up for me at least.
Head like a hole
slave screams he thinks he knows what he wants
slave screams thinks he has something to say
slave screams he hears but doesn't want to listen
slave screams he's being beat into submission

don't open your eyes take it from me
I have found
you can find
happiness in slavery
slave screams he spends his life learning conformity
slave screams he claims he has his own identity
slave screams he's going to cause the system to fall
slave screams but he's glad to be chained to that wall
don't open your eyes you won't like what you see
the blind have been blessed with security
don't open your eyes take it from me
I have found
you can find
happiness in slavery
I don't know what I am I don't know where I've been
human junk just words and so much skin
stick my hands through the cage of this endless routine
just some flesh caught in this big broken machine
Well, what does gen Y have to offer?
They got nothing. The neutered generation. That is why I find all this techno-revolution stuff so damn ironically funny. These people think they have the power and ability to transform the world while they live the most conformist lives in the history of the planet. Post-modernism, political correctness, multi-culturalism, etc. will be the death of Western Civilization. The ignorant third world reprobates, be they brown faced from Central or Southern America, or musloids will take down democracies from the inside.
Feminists will cheer it.
Libtards will cheer it.
Democrats will cheer it.
And then heads will be lost.
You have great points. I hesistate on assigning blame.
I didn't see Wendy O' Williams and the Plasmatics in there anywhere.... what's up with that?
Goldman Sachs must have been listening to "Above the Law".
Weird Al Yankovic.
The cause and effect here is tennuous..if the majority of accidents in cars are from people on way from grocery shopping and 60 percent bought vegetables s not say as sayng people who eat vegetables have a high likelyhood of accidents or that vegetables are a cause.
I went and found a rather good post elswhere on this that brings this into focus..
Here is a perfect example of a misinterpreted relationship of determination between what seems to be cause and effect. It’s not the music that makes you dumber or smarter nor does it help you with your SAT scores. First of all, the type of music one listens to is very much influenced by one’s environment, cultural and educational level. Second of all, SATs also have very much to do with one’s background and education and not so much to do with actual intelligence. So assuming that one picks music that influences his/her IQ and that generates certain test results is profoundly wrong. For future reference, try reading sociological papers on the subject. There is a very nice example that circulates in the academic world where cities with many churches had a high crime rate. You would think the churches were somehow the cause of the crimes, right? Wrong. The cities were merely larger and therefor harder to keep under control and that is why they had high crime rates but because they were larger they also had more churches…
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann
Chorus 1
The wheel is turning and you can't slow down
You can't let go and you can't hold on
You can't go back and you can't stand still
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will
Chorus 2
Won't you try just a little bit harder
Couldn't you try just a little bit more
Won't you try just a little bit harder
Couldn't you try just a little bit more
Round, round, Robin run around
Gotta get back where you belong
Little bit harder, just a little bit more
Little bit further than you gone before
[chorus 1]
Small wheel turning by the fire and rod
Big wheel turning by the grace of God
Every time that wheel turn round
Bound to cover just a little more ground
