NYPD Stunner: Cops Exit Ebola Victim Apartment, Dump Gloves, Masks In Sidewalk Trash Can

Tyler Durden's picture

If there was one theme from last night's Cuomo/De Blasio Ebola press conference it was 'how everyone has been preparing for months' for Ebola. We can all be reassured, right? Wrong! As The Daily Mail reports (and these stunning photos show), the police officers involved in securing Dr. Spencer tossed their gloves, masks and the caution tape used to block off access to his apartment in a public trash can.

Not just any trash can, but one on a public street corner...

While it is unclear whether the police entered the apartment (which is now locked down and isolated), some are suggesting that for the sake of safety - not to mention public sanity - it would have made sense to discard of these masks and gloves and tape in a biohazard bag.

*  *  *

Seems like not everyone has been preparing for months (since August) for Ebola... no matter, we are all assured by Cuomo's reassuring words that Ebola is very hard to catch (just don't tell the hundreds of healthcare workers who have been infected despit all their precautions).

Also, I am not sure if anyone noticed a pic of the doc in hazmat suit on yesterday's first post but in the mirror behind him, it shows the reflection of someone who took a pic without any protection, and that was October 16th in Brussels...which means that he had the been infected already and must have been spreading it prior to him coming back for some good times at the bowling alley after taking the subway to get there. But at least it cant happen to a nicer city.

I loved the part where he put down the roll of crime tape on the back of the car..., the crime tape he carried back wadded up in all the used gloves. If there was anything bad up there, it is now in the back of that patrol car.

I suppose the HazMat team were getting donuts...

It's so easy to nitpick every little thing someone does from the comfort of your keyboard.

I bet everyone of you guys would screw up the protocols yourselves.

How many of you guys have actually done CBRN training? None? Exactly. I love all of the armchair quarterbacking on here, it's golden.

Thanks for the downvotes, but seriously, take into consideration what I have to say.

I'm a put up or shut up kind of guy.

This is hardly nitpicking a little thing.  The vast majority of the American public has been screaming for travel bans and quarantines.  It's the public and medical officials in charge of "taking care of us" that have screwed up the protocols, with cover provided by their media friends.

I don't need any specialized training to understand what needs to happen.  And, for the record, MSF (Docs Without Borders) didn't even have self-quaranting listed in their protocols for returning health care workers from ebola-stricken regions.

nitppick? C'mon 9th Doctor... consider this - these are LEO's who will have had some training on biohazards - NYPD is quite fond of saying they are prepared and train for everything - yet a couple of NYPD's finest fail in basic good old fashioned common sense, simply failing to dispose of biohazard items properly - to me its common sense and I am in no way medical...

You're welcome! And it's not like these guys are forgetting an obscure protocol here.

You highlight a good point - I don't even know what CBRN stands for, but if I had spent the last week treating a horrifically ill person with a contagious disease I wouldn't even go near my family until I was 100% sure I was in the clear - these numbskulls are getting on planes and traveling across the country and riding the busiest subway in the country. I'd frankly hang out at our cabin in the woods for a few weeks, and that's just normal common sense at work.

When I clean my boat bottom with this horrifically unsafe chemical, I take great precautions to peel the gloves off one at a time, and not let them touch my clothes or house or anything, and any apron or face mask I wear all gets rolled up and dumped in a specific trashcan that isn't going to be around anything flammable or that might be harmed (like my kid or pets).

I'm a put up or shut up kind of guy too, but if these guys were trained athletes and couldn't figure out how to keep the football on the field or how to wear protective gear, then its fair for everyone to be screaming at the complete lack of regard to any protocol. The fact you don't seem to have a problem with it indicates that you're part of the problem (hopefully you just googled CBRN and are not in a position that will put us all at risk some day).

If my tin foil hat were on a little tighter I might think they were deliberately trying to spread it....

Nobody's saying a cop should have BSL-4 protocols down pat as a matter of course - what we're saying is that putting untrained individuals with no training or adequate protective gear in harm's way is irresponsible and asking for additional infection.

Now you get your junks from trolling as that it was it is.

It is not nitpicking at all.

Anyone with a half functioning brain knows that Deadly Infectious Waste is to be INCINERATED. That needs to be a given.

That is NOT NECESSARILY A PROTOCOL. That is just common fucking sense.

We are not playing with the Common Cold or the Flu. This is EBOLA, a Bio Safety 4 Organism. It is deadly to high percentages of the infected, unlike that of the Common Cold or the Flu.

IT IS NOT A GOD DAMNED GAME.

When the Doctors and Nurses that treat it come down with it in high percentages, and, they are wearing the protective clothing, and YET IT STILL HAPPENS, then you had better bet that this shit is quite infectious.

It is much more infectious than what is being reported. It is only down played by our wonderful misinformation media.

THIS IS NOT A GOD DAMNED GAME.

What you are writing is not making me think about anything except your aloofness to reality and your disregard for the gravity of this situation.

If these cops do not know how to handle this then maybe there needs to be someone else, in charge, who does know how to handle it. (And that does not mean some God Forsaken Lawyer Lobbyist who has no clue about this appointed as an "Ebola Czar".)

When you get infected it will be a karmic justice well served.

The Army has been teaching raw recruits with various IQ and education, (GED Level) in basic training how to don and remove "NBC" gear and how to decontaminate yourself, and how to work as a buddy team, for long before my days in Infantry school in 1984.

Even the dumbest bricks among us had the drill down perfect with in a week or so.

Example: one of many standards is to properly put on a gas mask with a hood, while wearing combat gear and carrying a rifle within 15 seconds of the command "Gas Gas Gas!"

(9 seconds for the mask and 6 for the Hood)

we could all do this drill by the end of the morning we trained for it.

20 freaken years later i join a volunteer Fire Dpet and on my first night of training they are doing the drill to put on the SCBA, (the mask with oxygen tank backpack, plus gloves and helmet) while in the full fire suit.

We have one minute to complete the drill.

I have never handled this gear before, They let play with the gear, and watch a could groups demonstrate under timed conditions.

I passed the drill the first try.

So what i am saying here, by these NYPD examples is

THERE IS NOT ANY TRAINING PROTOCAL BEING PUT FORTH AT ALL!!!

If there was, they would know what to do.

Agreed.  The entire purpose of training is to substitute for thinking in a crisis/split second situation.  It has nothing to do with smarts.  Just do you know the drill.  These people do not.

therre is such a thing as science. it's a naked strand of RNA; it's defenceless in the biosphere. the garbage can will destroy it; the sun light will destroy it; it doesn't last long in the environment. de-panic and study a little. A tuberculosis bacteria which is large and complex can grow a coating around itself and go dormant in the soil for sixty years and infect someone after all that time; by de-coating and having a coming out party in the persons lung who breathed in the dust. these Ebola things are a single naked strand of RNA; they don't do any clever tricks; they're a molecule rather than an organism; they don't actually have any survival mechanism or success, either; in the biosphere. Remember modern jounalism equals "lets panic" it sells pages. check out the facts. I'm not lying to you.

The FOX 5 Newsroom received multiple calls from concerned AT&T U-Verse customers Friday after an emergency message appeared on their screens

The message, claiming to be an emergency alert issued by The White House, notified viewers that their programming was being re-directed to another channel. The alert is part of the EAN or Emergency Alert Notification. Engineers with FOX 5 say the alert can only be activated by the President in times of emergency.

U-Verse engineers tell FOX 5 staff the message appeared on screens around Atlanta, Detroit, Michigan and Austin, Texas.

Back to the firing range. It's no fun being a cop now- with ebola on the loose, "cop fun" (beatdowns and other brutality) has to be curtailed. An ebola victim is like a ripe tomato- punch it in the face, and you risk getting splattered. Hell, you can't even tase people without them falling on you, and risking infection!

From now on, all people must be shot at a distance of at least ten yards, so as to minimize the chances of contamination.

It SUCKS to be a cop in Ebolatown.

The 10mm was invented because little girly hands and forearms could not handle the considerable recoil of the then-new 40 cal.

Me XXL hands love the 40, 45, and 50 cal.  First 1911 clip I emptied, my second or third shot was a bull's eye.  I could not see where my last shot landed.  I embarrasingly apologized to the gun's owner, believing I missed the target for unknown reason.  The gun's owner stood behind me staring down the barrel, and replied, "You doubled your bull's eye."

Sweet.  Too bad live targets return fire.

The way targets look hit by a 50, best analogy for being hit by one is Slim Pickens' character in Dr Strangelove.  Love that "...bodily fluids..." nut case General holding the 50 cal machine gun.  If a 50 hits your baby finger your hand lands in the next County, where you'd much rather be yourself.

What are the chances we are experiencing a test of the response system ?

An actual test for training responders or a situation created to show that an outbreak in a major city can be confined to one patient.

In other words, a scripted PR event for the CDC & Obola.

Does that explain the unprotected individual helping the patient put on his hazmat suit?

I will look for a remarkably fast & hemorage free recovery as we saw with Dallas nurses.

"Does that explain the unprotected individual helping the patient put on his hazmat suit?"

I think he was practicing putting it on, but puzzle it out:

If you're putting the suit ON, you are not exposed, and neither is the person helping you.

It's afterwards, when you take it OFF that the risk exists.

"Never let a crisis go to waste." - Rahm Emmanuel to Obama.  "Instead, pivot and turn it toy your advantage, to further the same or different cause." might have been the unprinted follow up by Emmanuel.

Whenever you see a Gov response to a major Crisis that is woefully inadequate or unprofessional, then you have to wonder if they simply sent out the Unseasoned (Rookies), the mentally dull (sub-90 IQ), or if this was deliberate.  In the case in any of these instances, the question then is "Why?", and they need to be asked of the right people in the Hierarchy.  IOW, it brings into question their Ability or their Agenda.

Further to my above comment 5372513, and response to 09:16 | 5371745 LULZBank, “Ebola News has become useful” to politicians.

As noted by myself and others, Ebola News is useful both as a Cover and a Means to further Agendas.  E.g.

Themes posted by various ZH bloggers:

1.  Demonstrate Control: Make it look like TPTB are in charge and have things in hand.  “Isolated cases popping up that are being handled effectively.”  At least until after the Nov. Election.

2.  Add Control/Laws: Where control is “inadequate”, use it to bring out more Gov laws of Control of the Public – this time under Public Health pretexts.

3.  Big $ for Big Pharma: It’s an opportunity to work the Vaccine angle for Big Pharma

4.  Financial Reset:  Blame a combination of Black Swan event (Ukraine, Russia, ISIS, Ebola) on eventual Market Correction and Monetary Reset.

5.  Agenda 21:  TPTB want Ebola to spread, to reduce global population.

Themes posted by Yours Truly:

6.  Financial Reset: Use Ebola as means to limit travel during Financial Reset, and prevent/limit "flight of Capital" from escaping national boundaries of the G7.

BTW... After said Reset, they might simply replace the USD with the SDR in the G7 countries (US, Japan, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Canada), and thus "force" the rest of the world to use it also.  IOW, use combined G7 leverage to impose it on others as the new GRC.  Especially if the Arabian Gulf and African oil producers and Australia can be made to join also.  Just look at the "combined GDP of these countries, and you've got one hell of a lever against any opposition.  They could do this to respond to or front-run the de-Dollarization movement.  Extremely devious, but probably effective.

7.  PR: To Desensitize the Public to the actual danger, having both False Alarms (real or fake), i.e. crying “Wolf!” many times.

8.  To FRONT-RUN SUICIDE PUKERS, using points 1,2 and 7.  That way they eliminate the Panic component from the masses that could affect the “Markets”, and can focus on the medical aspects.  It’s what I’d do in their shoes, and what every clever and shrewd politician would do.  It’s what Obama & Crew would do.  Absolutely!

9.  WW3 ramp: It’s an opportunity to do Beta testing of the Full System, to prepare for Bio-Warfare.

10.  Geopolitics: To secure key Resources, and to get China out of Africa – both as Resource developer and exporter, and as Arms seller.  Also to reduce Russian arms sales in Central and Western Africa.

How is that a doctor who recently works on patients with Ebola in West Africa can walk around a city of 19 million with no one asking Obama why he was not quarantined upon his return?

You people living in NY are completely insane for allowing this to go on.

How is he any different than a terrorist? You have no idea what his motives might be until it's too late. So you would rather not create an inconvenience for a doctor for a few weeks and would rather risk creating an epidemic among the entire city of New York? It makes no sense at all.

Common sense is the enemy of Ebola and no one seemingly has any that is in positions of power in our country.

The cops there are, mainly, meatheads. The nurses are freaking out and our friend who works in the Bronx ER basically said they have no extra gear or anything more than the usual for caring for these people. I told her to buy a PAPR suit and claim it on her taxes, but she said she would get in trouble and cannot just wear the stuff in triage even though these folks come straight from the airport to the hospital for care from these 3rd world nations. I'll probably know an Ebola Nurse quite soon. These are good girls. New York is an excellent breeding ground for this bug.

No, but there needs to be protocols.....the NYPD should already have a HAZMAT team ready to dispose of any gloves/masks/tools used near or in that apt complex in a HAZMAT bin ready for proper destruction.  I know in Boston, patrolmen would be no where NEAR this scene; the fire department (who has a HAZMAT team) would be in charge of taking care of this, and coordinating with the CDC in the detoxing of the apartment.

All NYPD Patrolmen should be doing is blocking off the street, directing traffic, and coordinating efforts with the HAZMAT people to ensure they have easy access to the building to do there jobs.  They should NOT enter that building; that is not their expertise.  They should NOT be disposing of any equipment used; that is not their expertise.  They should stick to what they are good at: violating civil liberties, harassing black people, and arresting folks who play the guitar on the subway.  This is pretty fucking simple.

If I were the union, I'd be pretty pissed off seeing this.
