Top Ebola Scientists: Ebola More Likely to be Spread by Aerosol In Cold, Dry Conditions than In Hot, Humid Africa

George Washington's picture

We've repeatedly warned that this strain of Ebola might be spread by aerosols.

But there is a fascinating and terrifying wrinkle to this ...

You might assume that hot, steamy places would be more likely to spread deadly germs than developed countries. But the opposite might be true.

In 1995, scientists from the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) reported in the International Journal of Experimental Pathology:

We also demonstrated aerosol transmission of Ebola virus at lower temperature and humidity than that normally present in sub-Saharan Africa. Ebola virus sensitivity to the high temperatures and humidity in the thatched, mud, and wattel huts shared by infected family members in southern Sudan and northern Zaire may have been a factor limiting aerosol transmission of Ebola virus in the African epidemics. Both elevated temperature and relative humidity (RH) have been shown to reduce the aerosol stability of viruses (Songer 1967). Our experiments were conducted at 240C [i.e. 75 degrees Fahrenheit] and < 40% RH, conditions which are known to favour the aerosol stability of at least two other African haemorrhagic fever viruses, Rift Valley fever and Lassa (Stephenson et a/. 1984; Anderson et a/. 1991). If the same holds true for filoviruses [Ebola is a type of filovirus], aerosol transmission is a greater threat in modern hospital or laboratory settings than it is in the natural climatic ranges of viruses.

Peter Jahrling was one of the authors of the report.  Jahrling was discoverer of the Reston strain of Ebola, and is now chief scientist at the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In 2012, scientists from USAMRIID published a report in the journal Viruses finding:

Aerosol transmission is thought to be possible and may occur in conditions of lower temperature and humidity which may not have been factors in outbreaks in warmer climates.

Given that this is the first time that Ebola has spread out of West Africa to cooler, dryer nations, we may soon find out whether or not high temperature and humidity really do suppress the spread of Ebola by aerosols.

This seems the first time ebola virus is out of it's native range in Africa. I guess it's too early to tell whether this is true or not. We'll soon find out. Hoever, the same is true for the common flu, which is why flu season usually starts with the lower temperatures in fall/early winter. If so, a double whammy ebola/flu-pandemic could prove devastating. Watch out for this possibility.

Ebola - not a problem at all if you have personal access to a medical staff of about 70, blood plasma from ebola survivors, and the latest promising ebola fighting drugs... I feel invincible 'cuz 'murica has ObolaCare....

Exactly,

What can be done in America or Germany with a handfull of cases has nothing at all to do with an epidemic.

Even five or six cases could easily wipe out an entire hospital staff and most of the patients.  Then what, Obozo?

Why Flu has a season, all those reasons it shows up in fall/winter, could also kick up Ebola contagion big time then, too!

It might surprise you, even though Ebola is not airborne like flu, just how many of these seasonal influences below that unleash flu then could also enhance Ebola contagiousness this fall and winter, too!

According to..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flu_season

The exact mechanism behind the seasonal nature of influenza outbreaks is unclear. Some proposed explanations are:

– People are indoors more often during the winter, they are in close contact more often, and this promotes transmission from person to person.
– A seasonal decline in the amount of ultraviolet radiation may reduce the likelihood of the virus being damaged or killed by direct radiation damage or indirect effects (i. e. ozone concentration) increasing the probability of infection.
– Cold temperatures lead to drier air, which may dehydrate mucous membranes, preventing the body from effectively defending against respiratory virus infections.[6][7][8]
– The virus may linger longer on exposed surfaces (doorknobs, countertops, etc.) in colder temperatures.
– In nations where children do not go to school in the summer, there is a more pronounced beginning to flu season, coinciding with the start of public school. It is thought that the creche environment is perfect for the spread of illness.
– Vitamin D production from Ultraviolet-B in the skin changes with the seasons and affects the immune system.[9][10][11]
– Research in guinea pigs has shown that the aerosol transmission of the virus is enhanced when the air is cold and dry.[6]

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/05/health/research/05flu.html?_r=0 says…

– The virus was transmitted best at a low humidity, 20 percent, and not transmitted at all when the humidity reached 80 percent.
– Flu viruses are more stable in cold air, and low humidity also helps the virus particles remain in the air. That is because the viruses float in the air in little respiratory droplets, Dr. Palese said. When the air is humid, those droplets pick up water, grow larger and fall to the ground.

Seems to me, even though Ebola is not supposed to be airborne, every one of those same mechanisms above should make Ebola much more contagious then, too.

Especially as we already know Ebola in the lab when subjected to cooler temperatures, stays viable much longer on surfaces, weeks longer, in fact. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20553340

And, we know that Ebola aerosol transmission is well documented and it goes much farther and stays up for much longer, than just the 3' rule. http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2014/09/commentary-health-workers-need-optimal-respiratory-protection-ebola

We’ve never seen what Ebola infection rates are in any environment outside of African heat and humidity.

It’s possible that whatever contagion risk level Ebola is today, while warmer, for surface, aerosol or airborne ability to infect others, come this fall and winter colder weather, it could become a whole different ballgame!

Surface and aerosol infection risks will most certainly go up and, who knows, but it might just be the right environment then for limited airborne transmission, too. Regardless, even if it does not mutate, it could suddenly be seen as gotten so bad, just from the cold, people will swear it must have mutated!!

In winter, the heating systems on buses, subways and commuter trains are running full blast, sucking up everything in the air and blowing it throughout the entire enclosed space.

It is kind of obvious that biological materials are more stable in cold. That is why we refrigerate food and biological samples, for god sakes.

Ebola might also spread very well in very hot crowded places where everyone is sweating all the time - like India.

Experts & gummint bureaucrats: yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda.

So far "eboly" looks like a non event in developed countries. Undeveloped countries, that is a completely different story.

Yes, Ebola spreads in dry, colder places and doesn't do well in moist, hot places.  This is why Ebola has traditionally been found in the American Southwest or the Gobi desert.

Oh wait!  I think I'll believe my lying eyes on this one.  If this Ebola spreads outside Africa, it is because it was "given a leg up" by "somebody".

These guys kill me.

It's more likely to be spread by aerosol in cold weather,

But it's not spread airborne ?????

It's as hard to catch as aids???

These guys are no better at medicine than the FED is at economics.

More likely to create vectors in the winter by being sick already.

Also any open wounds or sores are a problem too. If you bleed easily or are a bleeder to begin with you are at risk.

The only "experts" arguing that a virus that requires BSL-4 protocols in the lab is "hard to get" or "nothing to worry about" are those with a political agenda to stem potential panic.

Ask anybody who actually works with viruses in a lab environment how benign Ebola is and I think you will get a much different answer than the folks paraded out on TV.

FYI HIV is a BSL-3 protocol.  So much for Ebola being "harder to get" or "not any more dangerous."

Remember, technically speaking, "airborne" and "aerosol" are two different things - and these assholes hide behind that technicality with the public, who just want to know how they can catch this shit.

Well, "trial run" or not, the gross arrogance & incompetence of "our government" is something to behold.

"Soon, after school doors opened this semester, doctors and hospitals across the country began tackling massive flare-ups of infectious diseases and severe respiratory illness among children. Experts have called these outbreak unprecedented."

"While analyzing hundreds of documents, articles, and releases for this article, this examiner discovered on Tuesday that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) disclosed in a May 29, 2014 press release that “nearly all cases of measles this year have been associated with international travel by unvaccinated people.” As thousands of illegal immigrants from South and Central America crossed over the U.S.-Mexico border, the CDC recognized that this was “the largest number of measles cases in the United States in the first five months of a year since 1994.”

By the end of May, CDC also declared that 97 percent of the measles cases “were associated with importations from at least 18 countries. More than one in seven cases has led to hospitalization.”

From Jan. 1 to Oct. 11, 2014, the CDC announced that 599 confirmed cases of measles were reported with 18 outbreaks in 22 states. In 2013 and 2012 there were only 187 and 55 cases reported."

Almost half the country.

"Measles, respiratory illness, tuberculosis and other communicable diseases continue as a prime concern for the millions of Americans conflicted about the perpetual arrivals of illegal immigrants pouring into the country. While some diseases have emerged from the Philippines, Africa, Asia and Europe, the unprecedented amount of undocumented aliens is a major issue."
