Pentagon To Quarantine Troops Returning From West Africa For 21 Days
The United Nations' Secretary-General stated that returning workers from Ebola-stricken nations should not be mandatorily quarantined. President Obama expressed his displeasure at mandatory quarantines and "concerns with the unintended consequences of policies not grounded in science." So, the news that "Army troops returning from Ebola zones will be held in isolation for 21 days," will likely raise Obama's ire. The somewhat pathetic and stunning spin here is that Senior Pentagon officials say it is not a "quarantine," but rather "controlled monitoring."

Army Major General Darryl A. Williams, commander of U.S. Army Africa, and approximately 10 other personnel are now in "controlled monitoring" in Italy after returning there from West Africa over the weekend, according to multiple U.S. military officials.
The American personnel are effectively under quarantine, but Pentagon officials declined to use that terminology.
William's plane was met on the ground by Italian authorities "in full CDC gear," the official said referring to the type of protective equipment warn by U.S. health care workers.
There is no indication at this time any of the team have symptoms of Ebola.
They will be monitored for 21 days at a "separate location" at the U.S. military installation at Vicenza Italy, according to U.S. military officials.
Senior Pentagon officials say it is not a "quarantine," but rather "controlled monitoring." However, the troops are being housed in an access controlled location on base, and are not allowed to go home for the 21 day period while they undergo twice daily temperature checks.

Officials could not explain why the group was being put under into controlled monitoring, which is counter to the Pentagon policy. The current DOD policy on monitoring returning troops says "as long as individuals remain asymptomatic, they may return to work and routine daily activities with family members."
Williams and his team have been in West Africa for 30 days, to set up the initial U.S. military assistance there and have traveled extensively around Liberia. The team was in treatment and testing areas during their travels.

They are certainly not there to really help. I read an article talking about how those troops are going to help get a 125 bed hospital by sometime in November. I think they are losing total control over there... they've stopped counting in Liberia basically and are saying the real numbers are more than likely at least 2.5-3 times higher than reported... so if we are at minimum 30k infected right now and the infection rate hasn't slowed we are already beyond 1k cases per day. 125 beds will do nothing.

I came to the conclusion last night that all the doctors and military help the U.S. is sending over to West Africa will not stem this outbreak. There are perhaps 2 or 3 or more times the number of infected people than what is officially recognized, simply because it it impossible to count all those infected who stay and die at home and don't report it.
At this point, sending people over there to help may give them and us the feeling that we are "doing something," but I fear it is too little, too late.
Perhaps we should just concentrate on those infected in our own country and prevent others from spreading it. Thus, 21-day quarantines.
Its not just that they stay home, its that people get turned away, they cant test everyone who dies, and there are mass graves so we can't even be sure of the total body count, much less total number of infected. Its a real humanitarian disaster, that is, as far we know, the rate of infection is still doubling every ~20 days. If anyone has any updated numbers, I'd like to see them.

our health care system and our military.
if for every one new case two health care workers become themselves infected and then run the risk of passing it on to others, how long, how many cases will it really take to collapse the whole thing? how many before nurses and doctors, housekeeping and security at hospitials decide it's just not worth the risk?
this is exactly what happened in west Africa, the reason behind the epic failure of emergency medical services and hospitials to contain the outbrake.
because it spread just as fast inside the hospitials and clinques as it did in the general population. this triggered a mass exodus and there is every reason to believe the exact same thing will play out right here in the US. how many of us would stand to our posts in the face of almost certian death? espcially when leaving the job site means a much greater chance of survivial for you and your family.
add to that the fact that those infected whom you are risking your life for really don't benifit much from the sterile hospitial evironment nor the constant hazmat suited attention. fluids, prayer and some basic immune system boosters and they will live or die whether you are there or not. whether this takes place in a hospitial with an isolation unit or in the victims home under quaranteen does not effect that persons chances of survivial.
what it does effect is is the possibility of the virus spreading among the hospitial staff which is, in fact, the "worst case senario".
the CDC and the WHO saw that this was exactly what was happening in west Africa and yet here we are with ebola in the US making the exact same mistakes, relying on failed dogma and rigid procedure that is obviously failing to stop ebola from spreading in the worst way. there are other more effective ways to deal with the limited number of cases that have appeared up to now. ways that do not risk losing an entire hospitial to one or two infected people. consider that thousands of people die each year due to simple staph infections in hospitials. yet somehow our leaders believe that our ER's ICU's and medical centers are "ready" to handle something as deadly and contagious as ebola?
and this belief is based in nothing more than established dogma about how ebola spreads that has been proven wong and called into question by countless medical professionals. this is the recipe for a disaster the likes of which we have never even dreamed possible here in the US.
the US has the best emergancy medical system in the world...but only if there is a natural disaster or a terrorist attack or an industerial accident. things that require rapid life saving interventions of a non viral or contagious nature. no other nation on earth has the capability to respond to a MCE or a simple heart attack like we do here.
but ebola? something that can and does spread through the very hospitials and medical centers that are ment to treat victims?
