Total War Over The Petrodollar

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Marin Katusa via Casey Research,

The conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Total SA’s chief executive, Christophe de Margerie, started the second the news broke of his death. Under mysterious circumstances in Moscow, his private jet collided with a snowplow just after midnight. De Margerie was the CEO of Total, France’s largest oil company.

He’d just attended a private meeting with Russian Prime Minister Medvedev, at a time when the West’s relationship with Russia is fraught, to say the least.

One has better odds of being struck by lightning at an airport then a snow plow, or any other ground support vehicles hitting a plane and killing all inside the plane, in my opinion. And I say that as someone who’s familiar with airports, having worked at Vancouver International Airport when I was in university; I was the one who would bring the plane into its parking bay.

If it weren’t for those short odds, a snowplow on the runway with an allegedly drunk driver would be the perfect crime. But who would benefit from his death?

De Margerie was one of the few business leaders who spoke out against the isolation of Russia. On this last trip to Moscow, he railed against sanctions and the obstacles to Russian companies obtaining credit.

He was also an outspoken supporter of Russia’s position in natural gas pricing and transportation disputes with Ukraine, telling Reuters in an interview in July that Europe should not cut its dependence on Russian gas but rather focus on making the supplies more secure.

But what could have made de Margerie a total liability is Total’s involvement in plans to build a plant to liquefy natural gas on the Yamal Peninsula of Russia in partnership with Novatek. Its most ambitious project in Russia to date, it would facilitate the shipping of 800 million barrels of oil equivalent of LNG to China via the Arctic.

Compounding this sin, Total had just announced that it’s seeking financing for a gas project in Russia in spite of the current sanctions against Russia. It planned to finance its share in the $27-billion Yamal project using euros, yuan, Russian rubles, and any other currency but US dollars.

Did this direct threat to the petrodollar make this “true friend of Russia”—as Putin called de Margerie—some very powerful and dangerous enemies amongst the power that be, whether in the French government, the EU, or the US?

In my book The Colder War, one chapter deals with “mysterious deaths” and how they are linked to being on the wrong side of the political equation. Whether it’s going against Putin or against the petrodollar, there are many who have fallen on both sides.

If Total doesn’t close the $27 billion financing it needs to move forward with the Yamal LNG project then we’ll know someone stepped in to prevent an attack on the petrodollar.  The CEO of Total, before his death and his CFO were both strong supporters of Total raising the $27 billion in non US dollars and moving the project forward with the Russians.  But, this could all change if the financing does not complete.

How many other Western executives who dare to help Russia bypass sanctions—and turn it into an energy powerhouse—will die under suspicious circumstances?

Marin Katusa, is author of The Colder War, manager of multiple global energy-exploration hedge funds, and co-founder of Copper Mountain Mining Corporation. Click here to get a copy of his must-read new book, The Colder War. Inside, you’ll discover exactly how Putin is taking over the energy sector, how far ahead he is, and how alarming it is that no one in the US or Europe has even entered the race.

Well, let's see now.  So many to choose from lately with all the SWAT teams and "special agents" running around all the government agencies.

Aside from the usuals, you have the FDA, ATF, FBI, NLRB, EPA, IRS, DOD, DHS, DHHS, The Ohio Chamber of Commerce and Cub Scout Pack 916.

Pretty much any of them have the resources nowadays.

This is truth. Putin has the support of local Russian oligarchs, I haven't seen them attacked by him to any measurable extent. Sure, some of the worst abusers like Khodovrosky were put in prison where they belong. But overall corruption and dominance by businessmen has not been rectified.

You're just making stuff up to suit your pre-coceived narrative.

Boris Berezovsky? Ever hear of him? Look him up. He's dead.

Michael Cherney? He's hiding out in ... wait for it ... Israel of all places, speaking well of Putin these days in hope that he'll get some billions for the largest aluminum company in the world, Rusal, which he basicly stole from the Russian state, then lost it when Vladomir clawed it back. Could be a long wait.

Vladimir Gusinsky, Jewish media mogul / spin master who guarenteed former president, the drunk Yeltsin's reelection after Yeltsin agreed to turn the country over to his pack of theives. Probably hiding out in the zino entity as well.

Jewish Mikhail Khodorkovsky you already mentioned.

I could go on, but by now, you can hopefully see the pattern. If you don't see the pattern, you're missing the whole point of why the zino money-changers, here on ZH and elseswhere are on their crusade to demonize and topple their nemesis, Putin.

BTW, its not like they have an anti-Jew thing going on. Roman Abromovich, Jewish owner of Chelsea FC has prospered under Putin, appearently because he considers himself Russian and not just another international opportunist.

He is an elite, who is interested in maintaining his power over Russian peasants more than he cares about destroying Western elites. The elites don't have sentiments towards their country. They feel no connection with their peasants. They merely use patriotism as a tool to control the masses.

All this Russia defying West bullshit happening in the last year.... Putin gets popular and maintains a stronger grip over Russia. And the West gets to carry out its agenda, using Russia to fearmonger the people. It's a win-win for the elites.

Zerohedge seems to think that Putin is this utopian unicorn savior fighting against a corrupt system. Yes, it is hopeful to think about it this way, but quite wrong.

I have respect for a guy like Putin who can play Obama for a fool, despite starting with a lot fewer pieces on the board.  He's like the Emperor in Star Wars.  Not a nice guy, but you have to respect his game.

And besides, he took Crimea without a shot and got what Russia always wanted all for itself- a warm water port.  That's what I would call "doing something" geopolitically speaking.

Crimea was part of Soviet Union.  Crimea was Russian.  Did the democratic vote somehow get by you?  Crimea was agreed.

Not a shot fired?  Yeah how about the overthrow of gov.  by the Nuland folks?  I call that a shot.  What about NATO going against agreements and moving to encircle Russia? I call that a shot.

Shots were fired by US minions and bribed puppets.

So yes a drunken snowplow silences opposition.

WTF?  Read Putin's speech at Valdai meeting.  Then compare it to the BS you hear every day by the liars who pull the strings in YOUR brain.

Soviet Union was then, Russian Federation is now.  Two different things.

I wasn't expecting the locals to start shooting at Russian troops, but Ukraine had military (and paramilitary and police) all over that place.  They were also backed by the west, though not as much as they thought, obviously.  And not a shot was fired.  The "vote" you refer to happened afterwards, by the way.

You can call the Russian Federation the same thing as the Soviet Union.  You can call political maneuvering the same thing as shots fired.  But they aren't.

Baffles me how people on here think Crimea was some kind of master stroke by Putin.  It was an area that had a notably Russian population due to mass migrations in the 1920s and 1930s and again in the late 40s/early 50s and Putin already knew the US public (rightly) would not support any kind of direct US military led-intervention.  He knew that after what occured in Georgia.

"I have respect for a guy like Putin who can play Obama for a fool" - really . How hard can that be. Once you have taken the full measure of the Golfer-in - chief it can´t be that much of a challenge. Really.

If my hypothesis is right then the really distrubring questions is what the voting public in the U.S. are up to. You have racked up a nice hand of shady loosers and to this day seem to believe all the agitprop on "war on terror" and all the other crap you are being spoonfed.

A great country like the U.S. can take a lot of abuse - but you are now really circling the drain. Electing Hillary in 2016 which from a rational standpoint seems completely insane is now starting to look a distinct possibility.

I get what you're saying and partially agree.  I think he didn't have interest in taking down western elites until they became intent on taking him down.  He was probably happy to bite off a finger now and then while he consolidated Russia for himself first and the Russians second.

Now they have tried to back him into a corner.  I think Sun Tzu warned against that approach to warfare.  In fact, I'm pretty sure he advocated that as a defensive measure when your force was not equal to the attacking force.  Your men have to fight or die so it can have a hardening effect.

All in all I'm not really sure that Putin isn't in on the whole gag either.  People have been predicting the movements we are seeing.  It is just happening at what seems to be a glacial pace to us in the west so most people cannot recognize it.  Well there is that and Football!

The 'Cold War' never ended - that was pure propaganda - because the 'war' for markets and resources never ends.  Our western media are lying like mother-fuckers, which is forgivable during war time when we're fighting for our lives, but this continuing dissembling by our politicians and media makes clear that they consider our current status as 'at war'.  The 'War on Terror' - the 'Long War'.  Low intensity, but war nonetheless.

Simple question, how does the CIA engineer a snowplow onto a Russian runway?

James Bond couldn't do that and the Keystone CIA Cops are unlikely. Hacking into the planes controls to prevent lift is possible, but how do you guarantee death? That's risky like a nailgun. But a message was sent to other bankers even it this was a total coincidence. They'll all be looking over their shoulders.

Pretty straight forward: call in sick. Put a "replacement" air traffic controller in the tower. Direct snow plow driver (did you see the size of those Russian snow plows! Size of a semi!) on to the unused runway. Said ATC vectors plane to said "unused runway". Blame on drunk plow driver and newbie ATC, stir in MSM. Done.

It is plausible to me that this could have been an elaborate "hit" against the Total executive; but for two things:

First, the driver of the snow plow is not suicidal. It is hard for me to believe that he would try to clip the wing of the jet, without understanding that he would be putting his own life in peril.

Second in darkness, how was the driver to be sure that this was the right plane; and how would he know how to time the movement of the snowplow to interdict the plane just the right way, and at just the right time and just the right place on the runway?.

Total is likely to close the $27 billion funding given China's sloshing credit. What I want to know, is the current CEO Patrick Pouyanne going to be any different from his predecessor? That's the key. If de Margerie was killed because of his vocal support for Russia and whoever behind the murder didn't think ahead enough to have a more compliant successor in place, then the murder was done impulsively - as a childish reaction - and that is the hallmark of the idiotic psychopaths in charge of the US government.

Thierry Desmarest, who has been chairman of Total since de Margerie became CEO has a history of making landmark deals against the wishes of the Pentagon. He is highly likely to lead the company with Patrick Pouyanne toward closer cooperative ties with Russia. Those two key people and their families will be the next targets if there is any merit to the theory that de Margerie was killed by the greenback printers.

simplified, France's companies have a history of making landmark deals against the wishes of Uncle Sam, and France has a history of being critical of parts of Uncle Sam's undertakings in the world... while supporting other undertakings

and this resulted in American media showing US Citizens emptying bottles of French wine in protest for France not joining the Iraq fray, for example, or questioning the "WMD in Iraq" meme

so that even Homer Simpson had to join the French-bashing, by coining the famous "cheese-eating surrendering monkeys"

the greatest highlight was of course when the US Congress Cafeteria renamed "French Fries" into "Liberty Fries"

I fear less possible "childish reactions" by intelligence services then the great might of the US media declaring France a "semi-rogue state"

I fear for a future day where US citizens hear about "strong action" taken against "Despicable France" and the majority of the US people... cheer

keep the Freedom Fries, but at least send the Statue of Liberty back, before it's gone that far

I'll bet there are no computers in those snowplows.  Certainly not the kind that would allow for potential remote control.  That would be, like, crazy.  Remote driving a jet on takeoff and a snowplow is simply beyond the laws of physics and the realms of known science and engineering.

As stated by Stifmeister, Putin is little more a champion of the people than Obama. Sure, he got Russia out of the worst excesses of oligarchy under Yeltsin, but all it really ended up doing was ensure that the global rich and powerful could maintain an equilibrium position rather than being forced out by the people immediately. There are still plenty of oligarchs in Russia, and wealthy people the world over with investments in Russia for the sake of private profit. Furthermore, plenty of Russian/former Soviet oligarchs have opulent residences in upscale areas in London, with business investments in both Russia and Europe. There is plenty of connection between the West, Russia, and China. While it may be true that the West's dominance is coming to an end, the end of the West does not mean the end of economic inequity and peace on earth.

What we need is a global revolution of the global working and poor classes against the rich and powerful. We need to shut down the factories, stop joining their armies, paralyze the government with endless protest. Eventually they will realize that they depend on the labor of the working classes and will be forced to step down.

I will repeat this post because in my opinion it’s important to open eyes those who have good intention in their heart but have been misled by elite / regimes of different sides. How I see things is I look at what government is doing – looking at its work, methods and results. And from there it’s basically two sides: those who work in good of common people and protect their individual rights & freedoms, and those who manipulate their people take their rights away and work for elite benefits. Now you look from that perspective and you are going around in so called “alternative media” as this (which actually is not alternative at all – but about that little later) than I’m sure you are aware  about US oligarch regime crimes and that they are not working for the people. What you are lacking in information at some sites is about other elites / regimes / oligarchs and how they treat their people. So because of this lack of information you can be easily manipulated to think that there is only one evil elite that rules west and others can be looked at as opposition to this evil – so automatically they are the good guys VS evil west. Well it’s not so at all. If you go back to what I started and those criteria how I divide governments – than you will realize that for example Putin oligarch regime, China elite regime – is not working for their people and is not protecting their individual rights and freedoms. They use the same tactics, the same crimes, the same manipulation in order to gain their elite more power more wealth and hides it under different banners. I’ post links about Putin regime in the end – check them out.

This manipulation with your mind is possible using different kind of channels that you think is alternative media – when actually it’s Putin regime asset for brainwashing you. Also US oligarch regime has their alternative media to brainwash you. So it’s really hard to stay focus and not to get lost in this war over your mind. But those criteria I posted can help you.

What Putin regime assets as RT, Zerohedge (because obviously it is Putin regime asset as you will not be able to find any criticism towards from this site towards actions Putin regime do to their people by limiting their freedoms, by internet censorship and of course will stay in line with Putin regime lies that they are not invading Ukraine - when there is evidence about Putin regime tanks in Ukraine that are not in any country army but only in Russian) does is they are mixing truth with lies. You know – you have to add some sugar for bitter poison. They are well aware about US oligarch crimes and they are well aware that MSM is hiding them from people in west and they are well aware that people in west is seeking the truth that exposes these crimes – so what they do is this – they expose US oligarch regime crimes for what you are so interested in and in this way they are taking your attention and confidence to this source so that you trust them and thank them for bringing truth. And what they do then is they add their Putin regime lies that you automatically accept as truth because they were saying truth about US oligarch regime crimes (not always though). So this is the way they mix truth with lies in order to make you think from their perspective. If they add more paid trolls than mostly this scheme will work and people will live under Putin regime brainwashing machine. So now you know. Now it’s a choice for you to think this trough and start looking at information more with critical thinking. Yes, world is not so simple as we think.

Yes, whatever the conspiracy angle; the legacy of de Gaulle and a Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals stays the focus of those in France who have not bought into Pax Americana (this latter being the Sarko to Hollande episode currently in vogue).

If France's foreign policy, like those of EU sister nations, under the twin dystopia of American 21st Century neo-con logic and financialized banksta debt, gets sucked into Syrac/Sahel/Ukraine conundrum without resolving the underlying economic realities of their home countries-- feeding the illegal transfer of destitute populations from South/East to West to make the social tissue even more fragile than it is today-- then a lot of voices will be heard to turn the boat around and decouple Europe's future from Nato's hold and Pax Americana's Oligarchy and Technocracy (Google/NSA games) monopoly.

This whole cold war resurgence is Pax Americana, the neo-con version, upping the ante.

All the while losing control of key surrogates of the sacred Oil Patch---Saudi and now Israel included with the current Bibi- Obama spat in making--which will make the neo-con strategy even LESS readable and all the more OPAQUE. What becomes unclear in global policy when you are top man leads to huge unintentional consquences.

The world needs clarity as the fiat $/FED fed debt domination now becomes unsustainable, and its bringing globalisation of Pax Americana concoction --since NWO and Berlin Wall collapse-- down.

And no Empire can resist the strain of militarist pain without payback and financial spending without return on investment. All fed on public debt that spans the lives of THREE to FOUR generations.

Double whammy that could bring down the Petrodollar system; slowly then suddenly.

Putin has to stick it out as harbinger of a new DEAL on the crucial world fossil fuel front and Total will have to do what Enrico Mattei said all along...

Oil Empires, in the current paradigm prevalent since 1945, never die, they just fade away like ancient heroes; to be reborn under a new flag.
