20-Year CBS News Veteran Details Massive Censorship And Propaganda In Mainstream Media

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Journalists should be dark, funny, mean people. It’s appropriate for their antagonistic, adversarial role.

– Matt Taibbi, in this New York Magazine article

Reporters on the ground aren’t necessarily ideological, Attkisson says, but the major network news decisions get made by a handful of New York execs who read the same papers and think the same thoughts.

Often they dream up stories beforehand and turn the reporters into “casting agents,” told “we need to find someone who will say . . .” that a given policy is good or bad. “We’re asked to create a reality that fits their New York image of what they believe,” she writes.

– From the excellent New York Post article: Ex-CBS reporter’s book reveals how liberal media protects Obama

Earlier this week, I published a piece titled, Former CBS Reporter Accuses Government of Secretly Planting Classified Docs on Her Computer, which I thought was incredible in its own right, yet the information in that post seems almost trite compared to the flood of information Attkisson has revealed to the New York Post’s Kyle Smith.

The following excerpts from the piece will confirm all of your worst suspicions about mainstream media:

Sharyl Attkisson is an unreasonable woman. Important people have told her so.

When the longtime CBS reporter asked for details about reinforcements sent to the Benghazi compound during the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack, White House national security spokesman Tommy Vietor replied, “I give up, Sharyl . . . I’ll work with more reasonable folks that follow up, I guess.”

Another White House flack, Eric Schultz, didn’t like being pressed for answers about the Fast and Furious scandal in which American agents directed guns into the arms of Mexican drug lords. “Goddammit, Sharyl!” he screamed at her. “The Washington Post is reasonable, the LA Times is reasonable, The New York Times is reasonable. You’re the only one who’s not reasonable!”

Interesting, because as Matt Taibbi notes in the quote at the top, investigative journalists are not supposed to be reasonable. I digress…

In nearly 20 years at CBS News, she has done many stories attacking Republicans and corporate America, and she points out that TV news, being reluctant to offend its advertisers, has become more and more skittish about, for instance, stories questioning pharmaceutical companies or car manufacturers.

Working on a piece that raised questions about the American Red Cross disaster response, she says a boss told her, “We must do nothing to upset our corporate partners . . . until the stock splits.” (Parent company Viacom and CBS split in 2006).

Reporting on the many green-energy firms such as Solyndra that went belly-up after burning through hundreds of millions in Washington handouts, Attkisson ran into increasing difficulty getting her stories on the air. A colleague told her about the following exchange: “[The stories] are pretty significant,” said a news exec. “Maybe we should be airing some of them on the ‘Evening News?’ ” Replied the program’s chief Pat Shevlin, “What’s the matter, don’t you support green energy?”

Says Attkisson: That’s like saying you’re anti-medicine if you point out pharmaceutical company fraud.

One of her bosses had a rule that conservative analysts must always be labeled conservatives, but liberal analysts were simply “analysts.” “And if a conservative analyst’s opinion really rubbed the supervisor the wrong way,” says Attkisson, “she might rewrite the script to label him a ‘right-wing’ analyst.”

In mid-October 2012, with the presidential election coming up, Attkisson says CBS suddenly lost interest in airing her reporting on the Benghazi attacks. “The light switch turns off,” she writes. “Most of my Benghazi stories from that point on would be reported not on television, but on the Web.”

Two expressions that became especially popular with CBS News brass, she says, were “incremental” and “piling on.” These are code for “excuses for stories they really don’t want, even as we observe that developments on stories they like are aired in the tiniest of increments.”

Hey, kids, we found two more Americans who say they like their ObamaCare! Let’s do a lengthy segment.

When the White House didn’t like her reporting, it would make clear where the real power lay. A flack would send a blistering e-mail to her boss, David Rhodes, CBS News’ president — and Rhodes’s brother Ben, a top national security advisor to President Obama.

I had no idea that the President of CBS News’ brother was a top national security advisor to President Obama, did you?

Attkisson, who received an Emmy and the Edward R. Murrow award for her trailblazing work on the story, says she made top CBS brass “incensed” when she appeared on Laura Ingraham’s radio show and mentioned that Obama administration officials called her up to literally scream at her while she was working the story.

One angry CBS exec called to tell Attkisson that Ingraham is “extremely, extremely far right” and that Attkisson shouldn’t appear on her show anymore. Attkisson was puzzled, noting that CBS reporters aren’t barred from appearing on lefty MSNBC shows.

No interview with Holder aired but “after that weekend e-mail exchange, nothing is the same at work,” Attkisson writes. “The Evening News” began killing her stories on Fast and Furious, with one producer telling Attkisson, “You’ve reported everything. There’s really nothing left to say.”

Sensing the political waters had become too treacherous, Attkisson did what she thought was an easy sell on a school-lunch fraud story that “CBS This Morning” “enthusiastically accepted,” she says, and was racing to get on air, when suddenly “the light switch went off . . . we couldn’t figure out what they saw as a political angle to this story.”

The story had nothing to do with Michelle Obama, but Attkisson figures that the first lady’s association with school lunches, and/or her friendship with “CBS This Morning” host Gayle King, might have had something to do with execs now telling her the story “wasn’t interesting to their audience, after all.”

The who charade is completely incestuous.

Meanwhile, she says, though no one confronted her directly, a “whisper campaign” began; “If I offered a story on pretty much any legitimate controversy involving government, instead of being considered a good journalistic watchdog, I was anti-Obama.”

Yet it was Attkisson who broke the story that the Bush administration had once run a gun-walking program similar to Fast and Furious, called Wide Receiver. She did dozens of tough-minded stories on Bush’s FDA, the TARP program and contractors such as Halliburton. She once inspired a seven-minute segment on “The Rachel Maddow Show” with her reporting on the suspicious charity of a Republican congressman, Steve Buyer.

All I have to say is thank you CBS, or should I say SeeBS. Thank you for being so horrible at reporting that you have opened an enormous gap for myself and countless others in alternative media to fill. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without your incompetence.

I do believe that most of us already knew that the propaganda media was nothing but lies and bullshit.

It is so bad that I read the alt-media first, and then the propaganda-media next so I can more easily discern the elite's agenda from what the propaganda-media hides, spins or lies about.

However, it is not propaganda-media anymore if those involved are actually complicit in the lies. So here's to the propaganda media's new epithet--the complicit-media.

An American,not US subject.

These are the 6 media companies that exist today. There used to be 88. These 6 all get their news from Reuters and the Associated Press. Reuters owns the AP and Rothschilds own Reuters. Everything we believe, do, feel, want to buy, and want to TOLERATE is programmed into us. We are a mushroom. We live in the dark and are fed nothing but $hit.  With the Rothchilds fed and media, bread and circus rules the day!

Oh, well. Keep saying it. After all, don't you believe that a lie repeated enough times becomes the truth? Isn't that one of the core truths of Alinsky Progressivism? Keep saying it: "The MSM isn't liberal. The MSM isn't liberal. Toy boat. See Shells See Sells on the She sore".

Gee, the Media has an pre-arranged Agenda?

Who Knew?

Seymour Hersch suggested one way to improve the mainstream media: “Close down the news bureaus of NBC and ABC, sack 90% of editors in publishing and get back to the fundamental job of journalists which is to be an outsider.”

Seymour Hersch, perhaps the last of the genuine honest reporters in the MSM, wrote that the entire daring capture and execution of Osama bin Laden featured in Zero Dark Thirty, was a  brilliant and profitable lie from beginning to end.

Unfortunately Seal Team Six cannot say one way or the other, since they all died in a helicopter crash soon after.  Dead men tell no tales, I guess.

what is censorship, a director says use this shot, the artist chooses a color, the musician uses a chord. the msm has lost the chord. the most useful aspect of the cable media is that it gives all the various (journalistic) artists a voice. remember those photographers who FDR sent out to capture the suffering in the great depression (look poor for me) there is nothing new here. a hundred years and ducklings, you are still suprised. i admire you, you wake up each morning thinking this is a new day. the truth is in your heart, why do we bomb these people we dont understand? the 99% of zhers ask this question, the right question. in the end sharyl is probably too old to make the media runway. its a young persons game. young journalists may question but they always deliver. then you pay your dues and they put you out to pasture, thats all

the major network news decisions get made by a handful of New York execs who read the same papers and think the same thoughts...

They also live in the same zipcode, on the same island in the same city, often in the same building or on the same street. They eat at the same restaurants, they date and have sex with and marry each other, and they spend time with the same politicians and power brokers and elite and rich.

If they go slumming, that is taking the train down to DC, not the shuttle. On weekends they fly to europe. They all earn 400,000 to 10,000,000 USD, they all think that is normal and that everyone earns that because everyone that they know earns that much money.

I wonder if the news execs understand that the corruption they support makes them evil. They probably think that their corruption just makes them smart business people and that they are basically good.

They have a choice to take the high road and help the world by exposing and fighting corruption. Instead, they support corruption and benefit from it.

... or maybe they are just cowards, but I doubt it.

I will repeat this post because in my opinion it’s important to open eyes those who have good intention in their heart but have been misled by elite / regimes of different sides. How I see things is I look at what government is doing – looking at its work, methods and results. And from there it’s basically two sides: those who work in good of common people and protect their individual rights & freedoms, and those who manipulate their people take their rights away and work for elite benefits. Now you look from that perspective and you are going around in so called “alternative media” as this (which actually is not alternative at all – but about that little later) than I’m sure you are aware about US oligarch regime crimes and that they are not working for the people. What you are lacking in information at some sites is about other elites / regimes / oligarchs and how they treat their people. So because of this lack of information you can be easily manipulated to think that there is only one evil elite that rules west and others can be looked at as opposition to this evil – so automatically they are the good guys VS evil west. Well it’s not so at all. If you go back to what I started and those criteria how I divide governments – than you will realize that for example Putin oligarch regime, China elite regime – is not working for their people and is not protecting their individual rights and freedoms. They use the same tactics, the same crimes, the same manipulation in order to gain their elite more power more wealth and hides it under different banners. I’ post links about Putin regime in the end – check them out.

This manipulation with your mind is possible using different kind of channels that you think is alternative media – when actually it’s Putin regime asset for brainwashing you. Also US oligarch regime has their alternative media to brainwash you. So it’s really hard to stay focus and not to get lost in this war over your mind. But those criteria I posted can help you.

What Putin regime assets as RT, Zerohedge (because obviously it is Putin regime asset as you will not be able to find any criticism towards from this site towards actions Putin regime do to their people by limiting their freedoms, by internet censorship and of course will stay in line with Putin regime lies that they are not invading Ukraine - when there is evidence
about Putin regime tanks in Ukraine that are not in any country army but only in Russian) does is they are mixing truth with lies. You know – you have to add some sugar for bitter poison. They are well aware about US oligarch crimes and they are well aware that MSM is hiding them from people in west and they are well aware that people in west is seeking the truth that exposes these crimes – so what they do is this – they expose US oligarch regime crimes for what you are so interested in and in this way they are taking your attention and confidence to this source so that you trust them and thank them for bringing truth. And what they do then is they add their Putin regime lies that you automatically accept as truth because they were saying truth about US oligarch regime crimes (not always though). So this is the way they mix truth with lies in order to make you think from their perspective. If they add more paid trolls than mostly this scheme will work and people will live under Putin regime brainwashing machine. So now you know. Now it’s a choice for you to think this trough and start looking at information more with critical thinking. Yes, world is not so simple as we think.

Here are some links to look at and think of if you are cheering for Putin regime:

Deceit is entirely by design.

With the sources who are married to the bureau chiefs

Who hire the reporters who are married

To the lawyers who date

liberalism is fake leftism. The conservative side allows the rich to keep their money via regressive taxation, and the fake leftist liberal side allows the rich and the corporations to pay lower wages via increasing the supply of labor via multiculturalism.

Multiculturalism and other race-oriented policies, along with feminism were promoted to the top of the ideological jungle by the rich and powerful and the corporations because multiculti/feminism increases the supply of workers (lower wages) and consumers (increases sales).

Fake Leftism is all about money.

ALL of this crap without any but a few acknowledging that Atkisson has been a damned good reporter of the sort that you no longer see on MSM. I still subscribe to my local newspaper in the hopes that there will be a few decent stories on the corruption of the school board with the goomint unions. Alas it never happens. These fools do not see that a portion of their last remaining subscribers want what was once considered to be "reporting" rather than a screed for their political candidate.

I am in SE Wisconsin where the governor is up against an incompetent hack. I despise my US house rep, Paul Ryan, the GOP VP candidate with that asshole Romney.

The governor has been the object of a two year or more politically motivated "John Doe" investigation. (similar to grand jury in other states)

The guy has nothing on him and has done what he said he would do in freeing the taxcows from the goomint unions that have gutted us. I was leery of him privatizing state owned operations, and he has not hinted of doing that. I think that he is as clean as can be. If a vendetta investigation for years has not hanged anything on him, then it could be that he is rather clean.

 OTOH, Paul Ryan is this:

Voted for both the NDAA and CISPA.

Paul Ryan on Bailouts and Government Stimuli

    -Voted YES on TARP (2008)
-Voted YES on Economic Stimulus HR 5140 (2008)
-Voted YES on $15B bailout for GM and Chrysler. (Dec 2008)
-Voted YES on $192B additional anti-recession stimulus spending. (Jul 2009)

Voted to bail out the auto industry, to pass the Medicare package to the tune of $400 billion

    Paul Ryan on Entitlement Programs

-Voted YES on limited prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients. (Nov 2003)
-Voted YES on providing $70 million for Section 8 Housing vouchers. (Jun 2006)
-Voted YES on extending unemployment benefits from 39 weeks to 59 weeks. (Oct 2008)
-Voted YES on Head Start Act (2007)

    Paul Ryan on Education

Rep. Ryan went along with the Bush Administration in supporting more federal involvement in education. This is contrary to the traditional Republican position, which included support for abolition of the Department of Education and decreasing federal involvement in education.

-Voted YES on No Child Left Behind Act (2001)

    Paul Ryan on Civil Liberties

-Voted YES on federalizing rules for driver licenses to hinder terrorists. (Feb 2005)
-Voted YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent. (Dec 2005)
-Voted YES on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant. (Sep 2006)

Paul Ryan on War and Intervention Abroad

-Voted YES on authorizing military force in Iraq. (Oct 2002)
-Voted YES on emergency $78B for war in Iraq & Afghanistan. (Apr 2003)
-Voted YES on declaring Iraq part of War on Terror with no exit date. (Jun 2006)
-Voted NO on redeploying US troops out of Iraq starting in 90 days. (May 2007)

I choose carefully as if voting makes a difference even though I know it does not in most cases.

This is how it works.  It's a system that the elite teach their kids and the expectation is that this is how the world works.  It's probably because most of these people never had to work for advancement in their own lives or are simply morally bankrupt to begin with.

I saw it first hand at the Ivy School where I studied law.  A friend of mine was an editorialist in the paper and one week she persuaded me to write her column for her.  She got where she was because of this same system - she was in the secret society "Quill & Dagger" which has a whole series of creepy elite bullshit that convinces kids they can rule the world.  I wrote a column that criticized the paper itself for some of its ridiculous reportage.  The response by everyone, including her, was "you can't do this".  It wasn't even a question of what was said or the truthfulness or even the organizational/political ramifications - it was like I had said the sun rises in the West.  A simple - no go - that required compliance or the threat cascade would be unleashed.  The matter left my hands.

This, among other things at these sick corrupt centers of power, really shaped my fear of where the US is.  I was born midwest, worked hard since I was 12, worked in a factory, and earned everything I got while learning from mistakes and avoiding the blame game.  What I saw at these institutions - and let me tell you these "kids" there end up being the ones who control thought in this country - my classmate now has a show on one of the major networks - is SICK.

One thing that everyone should know is that they are scared of truth to power.  Someone who doesn't play the game and who is not susceptible to their weak-willed elite scheme of "do as your told and you will be rewarded handsomely" scares them.  In a way, these petty elite are the most compliant slaves and we the exploited have the real potential to break their game.

Right..... tell that to the people from Occupy Wall Street... or the group Anonymous ... Revolt is not going to happen...  the people that are most effected are poorly educated and heavy medicated with both prescription and illegal drugs......  they don't have the ability to revolt.... much less understand how badly they are being screwed over.

The fucker is going to collapse on it's own weight... but there is much inertia and it can go for some time.

You're right - I didn't say revolution, though.  You should know that when you have the chance, don't play along.  The ressentiment of those up top will be probably the only sweet victory we can enjoy while the hammer is brought down to silence our reflection of their own moral nihilism ramapant in the fucker collapse under its own weight.

Well. The people advocating a peaceful revolution are advocating inaction. When has a demonstration changed anything?

From a logistical perspective, is somebody was motivated to "reach out and touch" someone, the door is wide open.  There aren't enough police officers, private security officers, etc. to cover the personal protection detail of every one of these people.  If the "target" isn't available, then their immediate family members will almost certainly be.  These people don't care about you, your family, your community, your civil rights or respecting the rights delineated in the Constitution.  Why should you afford them any respect?  All they want is more power.

The most dangerous kind of person is one that has nothing left to lose.  And these assholes are doing their level best to take everything they can.  When the blowback occurs for them, they simply won't know what to do, except die in place.

I was surprised to see that Vlad Putin stopped to mention OWS in the Q&A following his speech last week in Sochi at the final plenary meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club’s XI session. The meeting’s theme is The World Order: New Rules or a Game without Rules.

"Incidentally, with regard to mass demonstrations, let’s look at Occupy Wall Street. Where is that movement? It was nipped in the bud. And nobody says that they were treated badly. They were treated well, but they were suppressed. They were embraced so tightly that nobody had time to say a word, and it is unclear where it all dissipated. In this regard, we need to give them credit: they work well."

Although I'm sure many would ask for his definition of "treated badly" (WB7!), it's interesting to me that OWS is even still discussed in public at this level, three years on. Being "unclear" tells me that he realizes that energy is still out there and will possibly/probably coalesce again...

Only if you r using "Liberal" as an adjective, and not a noun.   That definition would imply a great deal of freedom on the part of the newsreaders and journalistas  to dig out the real story and report it.

If you mean it as a politically motivated ideology where anything but molesting 10 yr olds goes, including confiscation of power by the left, then I disagree.

Which is it?

Or when the article is giving accolades to a person---mention any ethnic background but "white".

I'm thinking these journalistic decision makers are quasi-communist members of the tribe.  For a group of people that scream "persecution" at any given opportunity, they sure seem to invite being persecuted.  I used to feel kind of bad for jews.  The longer this bullshit continues with the media and central banking, I can see why the German people in the 20's and 30's took the route they eventually took.

The only reason the media is "liberal" at this point in time is due to the fact that the democratic party is in control, sort of. When the republicans get "control" it will be a "conservative media. The media merely sucks up to power......whatever form that power comes in. There is no money in telling the truth. The media is instrumental in perpetuating the Red vs Blue Comedy Show.

You are either too young to remember the bold, investigative journalism that took place on a daily basis when Bush was in the White House, or too old to remember the news reporting prior to 6 years ago.   When Bush touted out the Patriot Act, GITMO, Abu Grahib, Yellow Cake Uranium, Valerie Plame, Some Republican Senator spreading his feet too far apart while taking a dump at a men's room rest stop was big news,  Meanwhile Jon Edwards lies and affairs ignored until National Enquire forced mainstream media to report.   The Pentagon Papers from long ago, Iran Contra.....  The list is very long.  IRS abuses, Foreign relations WORSE than Bush which I thought would be impossible.

Now, well lets see, what investigative journalism is dominating the news over the past 6 years?  Hmmm.... Patriot Act on roids?  Nope,  Benghazi...What does it matter really?  GITMO.....Nah, no biggie though its still open.   Gulf Oil disaster?  Not 10 minutes of coverage showing oily dying suffering animals nor the results from the massive use of oild dispersants.  Snowden revelations?  Nah he's a fucking traitor crackpot that has ruined the country.  IRS misuse of power, no biggie.  No Pentagon Papers here folks.  More reports on Exxon Valdez that the Gulf since it's happened.   Fukushima?  Shhh....nothing to see here folks.  Historic numbers of enemployed and SNAP and WIC cards, Shhh.... GDP looks fantastic since changing the formula.

A news report that accurately depicts Obama and or his people in a negative light or pointing out major mistakes or mishandling of government in any way shape or form does not exist.  If they get wind of some reporter digging too deeply in a bad subject they get followed, wire tapped and or harrased.  Just ask the AP and Fox to start with.  Again, the rest of the media, who should've been hopping mad pretty much kept quiet.

The frightening outcome of this journalistic trend for the American People is that in the past we have relied on an honest, free, and unbiased press to report the facts on a politcal person regardless of political affilliation in order to act as our "checks and balance" and keep them somewhat in line.  Now the worst possible scenario is in play.   The press no longer engages in investigative journalism concerning our government but has decided that access to the political elites is more important than educating and informing the citizen as to what our politicians and government are up to both good and more importantly, bad.

The political checks and balances the once existed between the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative branches of government have been bastardized and dismantled.  All three long ago stopped representing the citizen.  Instead they represent their largest contributors, foreign governments and the lobbyist who represent a select group of wealthy individuals that pay these lobbyist millions to ensure that their elected officials receive their fare share of the payoff in order to pass laws, regulations etc that benefit the few and not the majority of "we the people"

You still sure about your notion that "the only reason liberal media exist...."

A lot of articles on the BBC website are ridiculous now.

They have attention seeking headlines but when you read down through the article towards the end, (and where people generally haven't the attention span to get to) it says that it was a very small survey/not significant sort of thing which contradicts the big headline.

So the whole article was a waste of time

"... the President of CBS News’ brother was a top national security advisor"

And this is how it's done. Not by emails or phone calls. It happens during conversations in cafes, coffee shops and parks.

A security advisor, or corporate boardmember talks to a higher up at CBS/MSNBC/ABC/Fox, etc. They tell them what stories they want, and don't want. The instructions then trickle down, disguised as credibly as possible. It was obviously happening in the 70s. It's still happening.
