Disillusioned Millennials Dump Democrats, Blame Obama

Tyler Durden's picture

In a sad reflection of the hope-and-change expectations, a new national poll shows likely voters in the so-called millennial generation prefer a Republican-led Congress after next week's elections, and young Hispanics are turning sharply against President Obama. As National Journal reports, the poll of 18-to-29-year-olds by Harvard's Institute of Politics (IOP) shows that young Americans are leaving the new Democratic coalition that twice elected Obama as the president's approval rating among Millennial tumbles from 47% in April to just 43% now (and nearly 60% of young Americans disapprove of Obamacare). However, the news is not all good as the future of the American electorate, generally hold Republicans in the lowest regard.

As The National Journal reports,

A new national poll of 18-to-29-year-olds by Harvard's Institute of Politics shows that young Americans are leaving the new Democratic coalition that twice elected Obama. The news is little better for the GOP: These voters, who more than any other voting bloc represent the future of the American electorate, generally hold Republicans in the lowest regard.

The long-view IOP findings suggest that neither party is poised to win the largest generation in U.S. history - a pragmatic, demanding, relatively nonideological electorate raised in an age of terrorism, war, and government dysfunction.

"Millennials could be a critical swing vote," said IOP Director Maggie Williams, projecting the latest results on future elections. "Candidates for office: Ignore millennial voters are your peril." Williams is a Democrat and a former adviser to Hillary Clinton.

In the short term, the news is worse for Democrats than Republicans.

  • Millennials who told the IOP they will "definitely be voting" Tuesday favored Republicans over Democrats, 51 percent to 47 percent. That is a reversal of September 2010 results, when the IOP found Democrats favored over Republicans among young likely voters, 55 percent to 43 percent.
  • Obama's job-approval rating among millennials decreased from 47 percent in April to 43 percent, his second-lowest rating in the IOP surveys. Among young Americans most likely to vote, his job-approval rating is just 42 percent.
  • Obama's job approval is below 40 percent on several issues, including the economy, health care, the federal budget deficit, and foreign policy. Nearly six of 10 young Americans disapprove of Obamacare.
  • Among the one in four millennial voters who say they definitely will vote Tuesday, Republican-leaning constituencies are significantly more enthusiastic about the election than Democrats.
  • Just 49 percent of young Hispanics approve of Obama's job performance, the lowest since IOP began tracking in 2009. That's a big drop from six months ago, when his rating among young Hispanics was 60 percent, and five years ago, when 81 percent of Hispanic millennials approved of Obama's performance. Only 17 percent of Hispanic youth plan to vote Tuesday, far smaller than the non-Hispanic percentages and likely a reflection of frustration over stalled immigration reform.

With a week to go... things do not look good for The Democrats... time to get long 'veto' pens.

*  *  *

And if you're wondering why the disillusionment... here's one big reason (via The Washington Times)

The Affordable Care Act was supposed to make health care more affordable, but a study of insurance policies before and after Obamacare shows that average premiums have skyrocketed, for some groups by as much as 78 percent.

Average insurance premiums in the sought-after 23-year-old demographic rose most dramatically, with men in that age group seeing an average 78.2 percent price increase before factoring in government subsidies, and women having their premiums rise 44.9 percent, according to a report by HealthPocket scheduled for release Wednesday.

They don't even know what they ar erebelling against.  These truly glittering jewels of collosal ignorance will run to the voting booth to pull the lever for Killery, Warren, Booker, Bloomberg, Kucinich, whomever the D's put up.  No one has critical thinking ability today.  They will just vote for the next person that claims they will help them in earnest.

I just want the government out of my life to the fullest extent possible.

D and R are totally different letters.

Furthermore:

D: love gays, R: don't love gays

D: don't love guns, R: love guns

D: love Mexicans, R: don't love Mexicans

D: don't love God, R: love God

I guess number 3 is now up for debate.

R's most certainly do love Mexicans.  Mexicans mowing their lawns, Mexicans working their factories, Mexicans muling their cocaine, etc.  What they don't like is when Mexicans want to vote or be paid.

Secondly, R's love _a_ god, not the actual God but another called Mammon.  They sacrifice untold numbers of their countrymen upon His altar.

Third, R's don't really love guns.  It's simply useful to allow the rubes to have a few pea shooters around the trailer in exchange for votes and money.  When they no longer wish to mollify those cretins or decide they're too dangerous, they will go send stormtroopers door-to-door grabbing them like nobody's business.

Hold Republicans in low regard? What's a Republican? Boener, McConman, and the other so called leaders have no agenda that they are willing to stand up for - and they bash Newt, Ron Paul, and the Tea Party every chance they get. The next generation of Republicans needs to come from these sources and be willing to stand up against what is wrong in our country!

The large number of government programs that have failed to carry out their duties and the dim view many Americans have towards Washington may be starting to take its toll on those who think big government is the answer. The Democratic Party has long been thought of as the party of "big government"  filled with believers that government can solve and is the answer to curing many of our woes.

Sadly cost and reality are quickly beginning to show the flaws in this theory, government is far better at providing access of citizens and good at passing popular laws, but the private sector tends to be more efficient and better at controlling costs. More on the flaw in the concept of big government in the article below.

As much as I loathe democrats, I see no difference in voting for a republican. It's the system itself that needs to change, not the elected figurehead. Voting only maintains this fucked up this corporate fascist system we are forced to deal with. The illusion of democracy is the best weapon of the fascist. I'll vote again when we have a multi-party constitutional republic, a government that coins its own currency, no central bank, two-term limits for congressmen and senators, absolutely no campaign contributions except by individuals with a limit of $100/year and all donation records made public and strict voter ID laws. And this is just the short list. No more wars for profits, foreign aid or free shit. And the CIA needs to be completely scrapped. It has become nothing more that an infected herpes sore on the foreskin of uncle Sam's penis.

Folks, voting isn't going to make this happen. At least not the kind of voting that is done in a booth.

I think the middle ground between these two philosophies, which I consider myself to have adopted, is that I will vote, but never for a Democrat or Republican. At this point, the most critical thing in my view is to create at least a viable third party. I look at how politics run in Canada or Germany versus the US and it is so much better, though no system is without its flaws. But I think at the heart of why the political process in Canada/Germany hasn't been as completely coopted by oligarchs as in the US, is that they have way more than 2 viable political parties, and fairly low barriers to entry for new parties.

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 01:56 | 5397170 livefreediefree
livefreediefree's picture

In the US, 3rd parties are functionally nearly impossible. More practical is change within a party. As an example, take the Democrats. There used to be moderate Democrats, but now almost every Democratic member of Congress is significantly left of center. (Of course, the reason the Democrats are going to lose big time next Tuesday is that they've abandoned the middle). Because Progressivism has overreached, and because it has shown itself to be a dismal failure in all areas, it is possible to move the Republicans farther right, towards smaller gov't. Only with a smaller gov't with far less command-and-control of the economy do we have any hope of vanquishing the fucking elite.

Sure, the Millennials suck because they thought Obama was God, but all of us sucked when we were that age. Where they have it over prior generations is that the system fucked them quicker than it fucked us, so they'll reach enlightenment faster than us.

Yea, you might ask, "You deluded mother-fucker, livefreediefree. Holding Republicans in lowest regards shows a polling error.  The reason being the national data is skewted by very few, but very large big citties.

Case in point, democrats face history party losses even in Democratic states.. The flip side, Republicans will pick up almost all of those lost seats.

Four outraged Cherokee activists who say Elizabeth Warren’s campaign has ignored their emails and phone calls will trek to Boston this week in hopes they can force a meeting with the Democratic Senate candidate over her “offensive” Native American heritage claims.

“It’s almost becoming extremely offensive to us,” said Twila Barnes, a Cherokee genealogist who has researched Warren’s family tree. “We’re trying to get in contact and explain why her behavior hurts us and is offensive, and she totally ignores that. Like we don’t exist.” …

What was Warren't team's repsonse?  They lashed out at the Cherokees.  It's classic limosine liberal hypocrisy.  Read the whole thing at the link.  Total whitewash in the MSM.

Put the blame where it belongs.

SCUMBAG PUBLIC SCHOOLS.....that liberals, unions and the NEA have turned into feral wastelands, devoid of teaching any critical thinking.  AT ALL.  And obviously, exponents and compound interest calculations left the building long ago, hence the student loan crisis that a two-year old could see coming.

Teachers are part and parcel of the state. It should be no surprise as to how and why they indoctrinate their charges.

All the little heathens are "taught" is group think, Johnnie had two mommies, and to live your life based on emotions.  And the state is your friend.  Give more to it and you will get even more in return.

I had a (very) brief conversation with my 22 year old niece last night.  We were watching the Cleveland Cavaliers play basketball.  My niece kept pointing out how "history was being made" and how I just didn't get it.  I asked her to explain what she meant.  she kept talking about the team and its players and how Lebrons return revitalized Cleveland.  I must admit that the ads featuring Lebron and the pregrame light show were over the top and I'm beginning to wish Lebron stayed in Miami so we wouldn't be subjected to all this "savior" propaganda but I guess that was his plan it's working.  But I digress.  Anyway I kept pointing out that this was only a game/entertainment and meant nothing in the real scheme of things.  I was dimissed as being a "hater".

Me and her grandma spent 10's of thousands of dollars on this young woman's education, sending her to parochial school (we couldn't afford private) and then helping pay part of her college tuition.  She graduated from a top 100 liberal arts college in May.

And she looks at a basketball team as making history.
