Meanwhile, The French Are Revolting...

Tyler Durden's picture

Amid record unemployment, even recorder youth unemployment, and politicians willingly breaking EU treaties (with apparently no consequences), it appears - just as in the US - police brutality in France was the straw that broke 'Le Camel's back. As RT reports, another anti-police brutality protest turned violent in the French city of Rennes, with masked youths and police engaging in running street battles. The unrest follows the death of a young environmental activist earlier this week. Overnight Thursday, protesters in the northwestern city lobbed flairs at police and flipped over cars, some of which they set ablaze. Police responded by firing tear gas. We hear guillotines are still cheap on ebay.

The French (youth) are revolting...

As RT reports,

A similar protest in Paris on Wednesday also descended into violence. Around 250 people gathered outside City Hall in Paris, with some throwing rocks at police and writing "Remi is dead, the state kills" on walls, The Local’s French edition reports. At least 33 people were taken into police custody following the unrest.

The protests are in response to the death of 21-year-old activist Remi Fraisse. He was killed early on Sunday by an explosion, which occurred during violent clashes with police at the site of a contested-dam project in southwestern France.

His death, the first in a mainland protest in France since 1986, has been blamed on a concussion grenade fired by police. France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, who came under serious pressure to resign following the incident, announced an immediate suspension of such grenades, which are intended to stun rather than kill.

The incident has put additional pressure on the already unpopular government of Francois Hollande, who has vowed that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding Fraisse’s death.

I always thought the French were revolting

Yuk yuk

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 20:24 | 5400277 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

what I think is seriously revolting is the way the English-speaking, now including RT, but particularly the American press treats news from France

the whole usual journalistic vocabulary changes, for example, with sprinkles of jokes about guillotines, once-dropped rifles, surrender, ungratefulness, etc. etc. etc.

all in all, articles appear that would not be accepted as even remotely serious if you would exchange "French" with any other nationality

in fact, kudos to ZH to distort French realities less then most other, supposedly more <insert media positive characterization here> sources. a little less

nah, I think you have one specific central banker in mind. who has one mandate to follow, btw. one that is very easily felt, at street level ;-)

anyway, those are protests. ZH correctly refrains from calling them riots. this one death should highlight how unusual it is for them to do more then look violent

nmewn's picture

Yes I have one in mind...lol.

Ok, I know you're over there, so why exactly were they protesting a dam being built in the first place, outside of flooding the locals out?

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 22:16 | 5400587 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

Remi Fraisse and 2'000 other enviromentalists demonstrating there maintained that the dam was not necessary, besides having a too strong environmental impact. no locals to be flooded out

greens here maintain that we should all consume less energy, in general

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 22:52 | 5400719 nmewn
nmewn's picture

So the Greens want the state (one assumes) to mandate how much energy everyone consumes. They have some way of knowing every individuals energy desires/wants/expectations/needs?

you put the finger in the wound. they aren't terribly concerned about individuals and individualism. they maintain that the ecosystems are way more important, in danger and to be protected at all costs

The State is not only comprised of the most popular criminal gang in a geographic region, but it is also the biggest polluter. Greens expect the largest polluter (with all the guns) to listen, and make a meaningful impact towards "pollution" reduction? Good luck.

The Former United States of Amerikanallowed a dam to be built within the borders of Yosemite National Park. I thought NP's were protected from development?

It would be amusing, if it weren't so dangerous.

They are not.

As we have seen, they sell you out to the highest bidder and the only way to really control them is to downsize them.

Ghordius - You know, I heard the green argument here in America for many years that stated that America had less than 5% of the worlds population but used 25% of the worlds oil. Of course, what was never mentioned was that America generated 50% of world GDP at the time. I like Ben Franklin's common sense about resource management:
"Waste not, want not."

There are good arguments of why dumping pollution without restraint is like pissing in the pool for everyone.

For some reason I could do business with any people on earth but the French. I am really not sure why they behave the way they do, it's arrogant and dickish. It's not like our American collective behavior is all that great nowadays but not sure where the 'tude originates from.

there is, btw, a very interesting reason why RT, aka Russian Times, likes to jump on this specific bit of news: european "Greens"

interestingly, these parties, that are very widespread on the european continent, are very, very critical of... Putin's government

on one side for the Russian government's enviromental agenda, as expected. on the other side, they often visit trials in Russia which they find politically motivated, particularly those where journalists and various political activists are accused. several of them, particularly from the German Greens, but also French, Swedes, etc. have already been declared "persona non grata" and have their entry visa in Russia revoked. in one case, a gal with a diplomatic passport

nope, euro-greens don't like Putin very much. actually less then nuclear plants or weapons, and that's a feat, indeed

I was not comparing him with anyone. I neither love nor hate him. As I wrote yesterday, he accuses America under Bush to have thrown to the sea the rulebook of the "Old World Order", and he has a point, there. On the other side, he is throwing the book, too, best seen in the Annexation of Crimea

and this is not an indictment of Putin as sociopath. this has a lot to do on how Russia's people see things, even if you discount a quite heavy propaganda barrage

Respect. a rare commodity, nowadays, in great demand, in Russia. If Putin was not there, someone very similar would. The same applies to Obama. It's about rulebooks, not "leaders"

Turkey did not annex Northern Cyprus, in a very similar situation of potential bloodbaths. no, I don't see the need of a formal annexation... in Crimea

that need was in Moscow and as a message to Washington. meanwhile, it goes heavily on the nerves of Warsaw, Berlin, Paris, Rome, etc. etc.

if the Bear bites off so blatantly that piece of contested territory... where does it stop? The Old Order was dearest to us europeans, not to Washington... or Moscow or Beijing

Anusocracy - There are two sides to a story or any argument. Yes he argues against overeach of NWO but also argues for a bigger seat at the table. I agree with Ghordius some respect is lacking for the Russians but leadership has a long memory of having to deal with the competitive and ruthless nature of the Soviet Union. I don't agree with 'containment' foreign policy based on Russia's current position. Here is why:

America handed the baton of reserve currency status to China. I don't see Russia in the next 50 years at least being in any kind of position to mess with the Chinese. The Russians already are contained. I think the "hate the Russians" memo is to deflect blame for public consumption of horrid American economy and politics. Reserve currency may be a blessing for a time but it becomes a curse at the end. The bust phase of it of course sucks.

Sort of a cheap shot on France there.

Tyler, this article is only a good excuse to make fun out of the French, and we will surely have a firework of hateful comments and “good jokes” coming from “superior people” - as usual in ZH, when it is about the French.

About the “great revolt of 250 people in Paris, Rennes or Nantes” I would say:  Don't through stones at others if you live in a glass house.

For instance, just remember FERGUSON,  and go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_incidents_of_civil_unrest_in_the_United_States

Last riots in 2014

·  2014 - Deltopia Party Turns Violent, University of California, Santa Barbara, April 5, Over 80 Arrested and over 8 police officers Injured.

·  2014 - Ferguson, Missouri, August 10. Protests turned into violent riots and unrest after the death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, who was shot by a Ferguson police officer. Multiple arrests because of curfew violations and looting.

·  2014 - Keene, New Hampshire, October 18. Riots occurred at Keene's 24th annual Pumpkin Fest, where beer and liquor bottles were thrown at event-goers and police, property including vehicles were damaged, and fires were set. At least several people were injured during the riots. Dozens of arrests were made, many of whom were Keene State College students.

·  2014 - San Francisco, California, October 29. After the San Francisco Giants won the 2014 World Series, fires were set, bottles were thrown at police, and city buses and police vehicles were vandalized by fans. Multiple people were injured; two were shot, one was stabbed, and a police officer was seriously hurt from fireworks. 40 people were arrested.

Blacks have less developed pre-frontal cortexes which, inter alia, results in  excess impulsiveness and, ahem, greater difficulty in making correct moral choices.

You know there was a lot of buzz about this "Project Hornet's Nest" a while back.

Fringe (ish) Conservative and Intel blogs mostly.

It made a lot of sense to me. But I am pretty fucked up.

That made me think it was likely real.

Here is a primer:

http://topconservativenews.com/2014/07/operation-hornets-nest-alleged-sn...

Link From Above:

Snowden said intelligence services of three countries created a terrorist organisation that is able to attract all extremists of the world to one place, using a strategy called "the hornet's nest".

not always, but this is  minor pops, nothing serious.

the main feeling there is  that gov spend more than he should, we are taxed more than we should, there is more money burnt/over windows than necessary for the country.

this become visible.

masse have 2 problem :

1- their lil comfort, thye do not want to loose it ( ie: social system aid -> overspends for gov )

2- they hate polticians but know that they need em to keep the ponzi in place.

35% of french ppl deserve to be abandoned in poverty to the death, this part of the population is draining almost half the give back social system.

to me usa is the best system : you work, you pay your health. you poor, die.

french should understand  that french mediacal care is sinking the whole country, nobody wanna change this.

so we are slowly making the futur problem :

poor class vs mid class.

poor are niggers & co, dangerous, those who break n burn in rennes for exemple, the midclass, say nothing,  tighten jaws... keep working... coz no choice.

the elite ? juggleing to prevent none of those 2 part of the population building guillotine. they know it.

if you look at french laws, they try to rebalance to make mid class more in the normal way, harden ez cash acces for poor to make more confident the mid class.

this is interessting.

do not be fooled, those who break, do not need money, they deal drugs, or having ebt system... ( called RSA )

most fun  in france, you see a grey that never work,  who is smoking, and guess brand of the vehicule...? BMW....

go figure.

the French people? for all their faults, they are already at their Fifth Republic. Their constitution is version 5.18, with version 5.0 launched in 1958, and 18 amendments since then, the last in 2008

if you compare with the US, there you'll find that version 1.0 was launched in 1789, amended immediately to 1.10 and now somewhere at 1.22, with no amendments since a generation, and the last bigger one being the Prohibition's repeal

I'd be careful with words like inadequate, they could rhyme with antiquated. Or badly upkept

In other terms, they had four revolutions in the time the US had... one

the French have - in comparison to many countries - very little to fear from their police. (even when young, brown, muslim and in the suburbs of Paris)

Crap in the USA is pretty localized and nasty (/involved lots of homicides), in France it is everywhere and it ultimately shows on everybody behaviours. It is a shame imo the country is done for, divided more than it knows, in debt more than it knows, betrayed more than it knows, and the list could go on...

Isn't this just Muslims and other assorted brown people, and whatever the French equivalent is of white trailer trash, getting all uppity because they aren't getting enough government handouts and simultaneously being told that they have to work more than 10 hours in a week?

It's the legitimate role of the state to stamp out this kind of nonsense - except that these are French police, and they're probably gay.

the demographics, as they relate to money systems and

and their lives upon basic principles and on the spot.
it is a phase change, virtual and psychological/mental
thing that is expected but not justified;
a social control mechanism whereby one becomes
one of some "we" and "us".
aging is what it is and then some,
some much less, in times characterized by the

they say it is all on paper but it

Being French my-self and have been fed that much shit about immigration, assimilation, etc. I think you are up to something though you are clearly pushing it: the main issue is identity, and to which extend citizens of different culture and ethnicities really feel like part of the entity no matter how hard the state and others organizations claim that there are no difference between.

To quote a Brit person I know who feels more British when not in UK, I was also feeling more French while I lived in the US.

With respect to the subject of guillotines and justice, if you execute the right people for the wrong reasons does it count? Have you learned/accomplished anything?

Is this a matrix question? Like with the X axis running from wrong people to right people, and the Y axis running from wrong reasons to right reasons?

A scatter plot of executions might show a pattern, and outliers might be shown to be lacking in accomplishment or learning.

Interesting question.
