Child Poverty Jumps 2.6 Million Since 2008, While Number Of Billionaires Doubles

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Libertyt Blitzkrieg blog,

Two headlines came across my screen today, which taken together pretty much sum up the effects of policy decisions made by Central Bankers and politicians since the financial crisis. The financial oligarchs got bailed out, and the rich got richer due to decisions made by “leaders” around the globe. As such, the entire planet has now been transformed into a neo-feudal tinderbox. Myself and countless others warned all the way back to 2008 that this is what would happen, and here you have it.

Let’s first examine the results from Oxfam’s report on the billionaire growth spurt. I hope all 1,645 of you have sent thank you notes to the patron saint of oligarchy: Ben Bernanke. From NBC:

The super-rich club has become less exclusive, with the amount of billionaires doubling since the financial crisis, according to a report from global charity Oxfam. There were 1,645 billionaires globally as of March 2014, according to Forbes data cited in the Oxfam report, up from 793 in March 2009.

The report ‘Even it Up: Time to End Extreme Inequality’ noted that the world’s richest 85 people saw their wealth jump by a further $668 million per day collectively between 2013 and 2014, which equates to half a million dollars a minute.

Unsurprisingly, this reverse Robin Hood policy of Central Banks and governments the world over has also resulted in increased poverty. Rob from the middle class and give to the oligarchs. Here’s what you get…

Child poverty has increased in 23 countries in the developed world since the start of the global recession in 2008, potentially trapping a generation in a life of material deprivation and reduced prospects.

A report by Unicef says the number of children entering poverty during the recession is 2.6 million greater than the number who have been lifted out of it. “The longer these children remain trapped in the cycle of poverty, the harder it will be for them to escape,” it says in Children of Recession: the Impact of the Economic Crisis on Child Wellbeing in Rich Countries.

Greece and Iceland have seen the biggest percentage increases in child poverty since 2008, followed by Latvia, Croatia and Ireland. The proportion of children living in poverty in the UK has increased from 24% to 25.6%.

“In the past five years, rising numbers of children and their families have experienced difficulty in satisfying their most basic material and educational needs,” says the report. “Unemployment rates not seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s have left many families unable to provide the care, protection and opportunities to which children are entitled. Most importantly, the Great Recession is about to trap a generation of educated and capable youth in a limbo of unmet expectations and lasting vulnerability.”

It adds: “The impact of the recession on children, in particular, will be felt long after the recession itself is declared to be over.”

Guess they didn’t get the memo. The recession ended in 2009, or so that’s what the media owned by the billionaires keeps telling us.

The study’s authors asked people about their experiences and perceptions of deprivation, based on four indicators: not having enough money to buy food for themselves or their family; stress levels; overall life satisfaction; and whether children have the opportunity to learn and grow.

In 18 of the 41 countries, scores showed a worsening situation between 2007 and 2013, revealing “rising feelings of insecurity and stress”.

Young adults have arguably been the hardest hit by the recession, according to the report, with 7.5 million within the EU not in education, employment or training (Neet) – nearly a million more than in 2008.

What about the USA you ask? Good question. It wasn’t highlighted by the Guardian, but UNICEF notes that.

In the United States, where extreme child poverty has increased more in this downturn than during the recession of 1982, social safety net measures provided important support to poor working families but were less effective for the extreme poor without jobs. Child poverty has increased in 34 out of 50 states since the start of the crisis. In 2012, 24.2 million children were living in poverty, a net increase of 1.7 million from 2008.

In case you’re wondering what billionaires think about all of this, let’s not forget the timeless words of Sam Zell.

Keep chanting serfs…USA! USA!

UN report condemns US government’s “international criminal program of torture”

By Thomas Gaist
1 November 2014

A recent report to the UN Committee Against Torture concludes that the US presidential administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama are responsible for far-reaching violations of international law for directing and covering up a global torture program developed by the US Central Intelligence Agency in the years following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The report, prepared by the “Advocates for US Torture Prosecutions,” Dr. Trudy Bond, Prof. Benjamin Davis, Dr. Curtis F. J. Doebbler, and The International Human Rights Clinic at Harvard Law School, states unequivocally that entire sections of the state apparatus are responsible for “breathtaking” crimes against international law.

It's hard to keep watching these stories keep rolling in as people remain unaware of them, or as they tolerate the conditions they are in, as the box gets smaller and smaller. I console myself with the realization that it will take enough people to notice and act before things significantly change. It seems the ZH readers know this information. Maybe more people will come here, to validate their beliefs. There will be tipping points along the way. Unfortunately, it's often when you have nothing to lose that you act.

Thanks for posting that info for observation, JustObserving. The researcher lists CANADA as a ''CIA Blacksite' along with the rest. This document should get interesting on CANADA's side of the fence Monday morning for sure. Harvard professors pontificating on the Bush Torture Regime that involved CANADA is going to get the attention of a few eyes in gubberment and media here in CANADA methinks. Some very decent Americans are getting to the bottom of the MIC Torture antics and I sure do appreciate them and all that unearth what the CIA has been doing regarding torture.

I, for one, would like to see Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Addington, et cetera, nailed n' jailed. If they decide to come to CANADA

we will be waiting at the border with indictments, cuffs, Tazers, and leg irons, to cart them off to prison.

Destroying the family... um... lets take it a step further and its the technocratic dream of destroying the human species and replacing it with homo evolutus.

That "property" on the bottom of the pyramid looks too much like people.  It should be machines.  It's still a good illustration nonetheless.

March 2009 was a generational market bottom.   At that point many of us had joined Hillary Clinton in being almost "flat broke".  Since that time however, most investors in financial markets have seen their  paper wealth increase at least three fold.

Causes of increases in child poverty are many, but a lot has to do with importing lots of poor people from the third world and giving them everything they need to have lots of poor children.  Meanwhile our indigenous working poor have found that they are having to compete for jobs with those motivated  newcomers.  Thus we see a race to the bottom.  Employers of domestic servants have done very well out of this and many of those who aspire to the Downton Abby artistocratic lifestyle live in the DC area (aka "Boom Town").  Keep our borders open - we need to refresh our household staffs frequently as the newcomers seem to learn to game the system more and more quickly.

The US leads the new world economy from the greatest producer of wealth a century ago to now, the greatest transferer of wealth ever witnessed and has needed only one tool, CBs or more percisely the FED. I'm wondering if we could get a further breakdown on the allocation of billionaires by industry. Have to figure besides tech (which is nothing more than a tool to invade privacy and transfer data to the wrong parties), the finance industry has to be at the top of the list. When billionaires are born from a transfer mechanism rather than a production mechanism, you know we are toast.

Newsflash:  They are SELF-chosen, NOT "Divinely Chosen".   ANYONE can be Self-Chosen -- if loved enough and raised right.

And don't give me the "Invisible Guy in the Sky" stuff of Religion.  Their claims are NO more real than my "Starship Captain" meme -- where at least I use it as a metaphor, as a vehicle to explore and convey concepts -- and thus... "To boldly go, where few or none have gone before".  If you tell me about some Virgin Birth, I'll tell you about Alien Abduction and Artificial Insemination.  Or I'll tell you about a horny Starship Captain impressing the daylights out of a hot, desirable peasant girl of 2,000 years ago -- and whose tribal gene-pool needs a real Quantum Boost.  Both seem plausible, but only the latter seems credible.  Therefore...

No Gods.  No Devils or Demons.  No Heaven.  No Hell.  No Fate.  No Sin.  No Salvation (from above).

WE are, or can be:  Gods, Devils and Demons.  WE make, or can make: Hell, Heaven or Paradise on Earth.  WE make our destiny and fate -- with what we Say and Don't Say, with what we Do and Don't Do.

"History and the Environment shape a People." -Kirk.  Our environment and past have shaped us, and they strongly influence our decisions for the future.  But they do not FORCE us to make any specific decision -- not in the way a robot or computer is forced to obey its maker.  There is NO FATE, but the one we make.  --->

Good News:  No Deity's ass to kiss for all eternity, and no sadistic torture to endure for all eternity by a 'loving' deity

Bad News:  This is all there is, you clever little monkeys.  So you'd better make the most of it, and enjoy the Awe and Wonder of the Universe -- and pass on the best of it from Your little corner.  And be sure to pass it to the next 7 generations (200 years), not just to your kids or grand-kids.  This mindset makes a World of difference.

And when it's time to Exit Stage Left, you can say in clear conscience:  "So Long, And Thanks for All the Fish".

You'll be an obedient slave to someone, practically anyone, so why not them? Do you get to choose the master you will serve?

Even now you serve them-- by making their opponents appear to be lobotomized retards.

Since you feel so strongly about it, however, why aren't you out in the field with your army of fellow travelers?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Dear Mikey,  I am truly happy that you're the first major ZH contributor to clue into and propagate the Truth I've been trying to spread on ZH for many, many months:

That what we have isn't just "Socialism", or "Fascism" -- although there is plenty of superficial evidence to support these models -- but something far deeper and more sinister.

What we have is FEUDALISM 2.0.  Or, if you will, using America as the Launching/Distribution Platform, we have MANIFEST DESTINY 2.0.

The implications are more profound that mere political labels... In the case of Socialism and Fascism, you'd be talking about relatively new socio-political phenomena -- products of the 20th century.  If that were the case and we had Socialism or Fascism, then that would be "good" news, when compared to Neo-Feudalism.  Feudalism is FAR more scary & dangerous, because it lasted > 1,000 years (in Europe).

I contend that a class of people that was as rich, powerful, organized and had the mindset of "divine entitlement" to rule, was not going to go away quietly.  They may have been overthrown ~ 100 years ago, but they did not just "fade away and died".  They went underground (into Gentleman Clubs and Secret Societies) and collaborated & colluded with Banksters, so they could rise again.  And rise they did -- under the times and regime of GHW Bush (Sr), starting in 1980.

And Banksters prefer Feudalism over ALL other forms of governance -- as it provides a perpetual stream of Income and entitlement lifestyle for them and their political-military masters, for multiple generations, not just multiple years.  Which explains also why the Elite have good relations with global Monarchs, no matter how bad they are (e.g. Saudis).  The Elite do not want Revolutions caused by non-Elite, i.e. by someone from the Masses.  They have time-limited or no use for 'Plebs' like Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, or Vladimir Putin.   They prefer the like of the Shah of Iran, King Abdullah of S.A., the King and Queen of Jordan*, the Kings and Queens of Europe and Japan.  They also prefer Useful Fools/Tools like Prime Ministers and Presidents, who effectively do the dirty work for them, and take the blame and fall, while they stay in the Shadows of Power.

That picture has it wrong. The facade of the pyramid is figurehead. The oligarchs are on top. The figure head is on top only when the government fails and needs a strongman. Powerful empires have oligarchy on top . developing empires have figureheads on top.

People love Putin because he has the power to do whatever he wants and still kill people behind the scenes. They hate western leaders because they're a bunch of powerless puppets whose job is to sell an image of hope while oligarchs do business as usual.

Thank God the author cites a completely non-partisan source like UNICEF. No hidden agenda, there. No sir. No ma'am. Except for the 2,235 employees making collectively 1 billion plus per year, UNICEF is as altruistic as they come, except for those UNICEF employees who are prudent enough to demand an increase in pay to at least $250,000 a year because, after all, eating in the finest NY restaurants every night and talking about poverty is expensive. and a $2,000 a day expense account is so last millenium (ie, due to real inflation [not gov't inflation, mind you, but real inflation], expense accounts need to be at least $3,400 a day to equal in today's dollars what it was in last year's dollars). Then, again, maybe not, but we all know that pure, true altruists and organizations that have no hidden agenda like UNICEF are bad with math. Hey, maybe we need a world-wide tax on oil so we can fund the education needed to teach UNICEF employees about math; alternately, maybe they can hire some ... serf who's good in math to accompany each UNICEF employee everywhere they go to do the math for said employee. Hey! It was just a spur of the moment decision, but what a great fucking idea! Sure, there will still be billions of poverty-stricken people worldwide, but all those serfs working for UNICEF can be fed just with the doggie bags the UNICEF employees get from their 6-star NY restaurants. Hey! Even better. Maybe UNICEF can employ 3,700,000,000 people. That way, if each had a serf to do the math, the entire population of the earth would not be hungry. I for one would love to munch whatever the fuck those doggie bags contain.
