Washington’s Blinding Hypocrisy: A Tale Of Two Elections In The Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by The Ron Paul Institute's Daniel McAdams via Contra Corner blog,

The US government loves to “promote democracy” overseas, often at the barrel of a gun. Strangely enough, however, it often “deplores” actual elections being held in such places. Take Ukraine, for example. An election held last week by a group that forcibly seized power from a legitimately-elected government was hailed by the US administration as a great democratic achievement.

Said John Kerry about last week’s parliamentary election held by the post-coup government in Kiev:

We applaud Ukraine’s commitment to an inclusive and transparent political process that strengthens national unity. … The people of Ukraine have spoken, and they have again chosen to chart the course of democracy, reform, and European integration.

In this US-approved vote, the parties disapproved by the US were harassed and even essentially banned. But that’s OK.

However in eastern Ukraine, which refused to recognize February’s US-backed coup in the western part of the country, parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for tomorrow are scorned and even “deplored” by the US administration.

The White House condemned tomorrow’s elections in eastern Ukraine in no uncertain terms:

We deplore the intent of separatists in parts of eastern Ukraine to hold illegitimate so-called local ‘elections’ on Sunday, November 2. If held, these ‘elections’ would contravene Ukraine’s constitution and laws and the September 5 Minsk Protocol.

So much does the US administration hate the idea of unapproved people voting, that it even refused to call them elections, placing the very term in “scare quotes.”

Shortly after the February coup in Kiev, referenda were held in Crimea and in parts of eastern Ukraine to determine whether to remain tied to Kiev or declare independence from the new regime. Those elections were also condemned by the US.

“We reject the ‘referendum’ that took place today in the Crimean region of Ukraine.  This referendum is contrary to Ukraine’s constitution,” said the White House immediately after the March vote in that region. The February coup was also contrary to Ukraine’s constitution but that did apparently not bother Washington.

Similarly, when referenda were held in eastern Ukraine this spring to determine that region’s future course, the White House spokesman condemned them as “illegal under Ukrainian law and a transparent attempt to create further division and disorder.”

When the wrong people hold votes, it seems, “division and disorder” are the result.

Those who overthrow democracy by force are legitimized – you might even say laundered – by an election they had no legal right to hold in the first place, while those who stood by previously-elected leaders and scheduled elections as a way out of the crisis caused by US interference are condemned, ignored, and not even recognized by the US government.

So here is the real message from the US government: elections overseas are only legitimate if we have pre-approved the parties allowed to stand and if we have pre-approved the outcome. The election must result in exactly the kind of “pro-West” government that we desire or we will begin destabilization and regime change, if completely ignoring the results does not do the trick.

Is that what John Kerry meant when he said, “you just don’t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion”?

The New World Order prefers to work with born again Nazis who seize power and cluster bomb their enemies.  Passenger jets are also fair game.  Next, we should learn that our "friends" in Ukraine are big time dope smugglers, just like newly re-elected Senator Mitch McConnell's father-in-law. Criminality rules the Earth.

Photo description (from a different source than DNR News site above):

The Ukrainian tank has fallen into a ditch. The ditch was dug as a barrier so that the Russian military equipment won't be able to pass. The second Ukrainian tank tried to help the first one, but it got stuck too.

For anyone wanting a more nuanced view of the Ukrainian situation, and the challenges Russia faces, I heartily recommend this lecture by David Satter, a journalist who has covered Russia since the Cold War days. Don't agree with all his points, but he has a lot of interesting things to say.

Hypocrisy writ large.

Scotland could have achieved independence from the UK with a vote of 50+%, however, a 95% vote in Crimea for separation from Ukraine is rejected by Western countries.

The vote in Crimea was such a foregone conclusion that there was probably zero ballot rigging, (perhaps less than happened in Scotland). Meanwhile, China is severely criticized for wanting to veto candidates for the Hong Kong election.

So, the hypocratic US, Europe etc only accept democracy that they control by having pre-approval on elections, parties and candidates.

Why would anyone vote to stay in the Ukraine with dual citizen scum like Yatz, Porky and the fat woman with Heidi hair plus Nuland and Soros pulling the strings and the Bandera nazis too.  Totally corrupt and run by zoligarchs..     90% of any people would vote to leave the Ukraine.

Oh and that dual citizen zoligarch scum - when the Ukrainian conscipts (who do not want to fight their neighbors) decide to surrender on the battlefield  They are shelled and KILLED by their own side with artillery.

Kerry strangely forgot to mention how when the Kosopvo separatists voted 'illegitimately' in an 'illegal' vote to separate from Serbia it was OK and also OK for USA to bomb Serbia and occupy sSerbian land with yankee troops. Hypocracy is defined as 'the foriegn policy of the USA'.

You'll like this report better —  of Sunday's Novorossia election:

Vladimir Rogov * speaks about elections and Kiev's change of heart about attacking Novorossia

* a Chairman of the Committee of State Building of Novorossia, from Donetsk

…We drove several hundred kilometers through Lugansk and Donetsk Republics with a delegation of observers from USA, Great Britain, EU, and Canada… There were [voting] lines one kilometer long…

Hospitals and schools are getting rebuilt, and although they get shelled again, they get rebuilt again. After yesterday's events I am confident more then 100%  that Novorossia will win, and will exist at least in the borders from Odessa to Kharkov…

Everyone was cracking jokes that the Kiev junta again branded everyone who voted as terrorists (squared). The foreign observers were amused that they are not allowed to go to Ukraine, said they don't want to go to Nazi Ukraine anyway, and will go there when we liberate it…

November 2 is another date after May 11 in the state building of Novorossia. Referendum was step 1. Election is step 2. Step 3 is - liberation of the whole territory of Novorossia…

Jorgen, it's because Americans are brainwashed from infancy to use the word Commie,  Marxism or Socialism as insults. Generally, they'd be extremely hard put to give you a definition of either of these three words (some even say Soros and the American Democrats are Socialist, so go figure). To them, it just means "baaad, yucky State". Not their fault: they have been trained to hate anything that even remotely smacks of Marxism, and any intellectual curiosity about it is also taboo. As time goes by Putin continues to rack up more points in the Ukraine as the conflict drags on. Things may have quieted down and the eyes of the world have moved to more pressing issues, as Putin is playing the long game by grinding away at the resolve of both bankrupt Kiev and the EU. A recently signed deal for gas supplies to Ukraine only highlights the fact the devil of any agreement is in the details.

The Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said any resumed supplies could be halted again on Jan. 1 if Ukraine doesn’t pay $3.1 billion in debt prepay for future deliveries. It appears this deal is tenuous and the guarantees of it being fulfilled are weak .Don't hold your breath for Putin to back-off or back-down, he has put down his marker and is now playing both Obama and Kerry for fools in a contest that may cost Russia little. If Putin doesn't get his way next week he will next month or next year at the latest. The article below delves into why this conflict won't be over until Putin says its over.

"...Wonder who or what is really in power in this country?…"

Cheney, Wolfowitz, Kagan, McCain...?...

With the US State Department controlled by John Kerry (aka Jon Carry, who got his “dream job” with considerable help from his neocon chum John McCain), now infested with neocons and psychopaths recycled from Cheney/Bush, the Wolfowitz doctrine, described by Senator Edward M. Kennedy as "a call for 21st century American imperialism that no other nation can or should accept" —  is still the basis of the Obama / Monsanto / Goldman Sachs administration policy toward Russia and China...

Confirmation of this came again on 21 April 2014, when former chief foreign policy advisor to Dick Cheney and current Obama US Assistant Secretary of State (and spouse of neocon Robert Kagan, a Project for the New American Century (PNAC)  co-founder and foreign policy advisor to Hillary Clinton)  Victoria "f*** the EU" Nuland told CNN that the U.S. had spent over $5 billion promoting regime change in Ukraine...

It's self-evident that the vote is East Ukraine by the rebels is nothing but politicak theater.. Self-appointed "governors" were the only recognizable names on the ballots, with other token unknown

names wrote in to create semblance of a choice.  Same goes for parties.. An alternative party name was put in which no one heard of before to create a semblance of choice for "Parlaiment".

People were given food to get to the polls and told that they wont get social payments unless they come to the polls.. The "voting commission" had no access to electoral polls.. They let people

vote over internet, including 16-18yr olds ( legal voting age in ukraine is 18 ).. Electoral bulletens were printed on regular paper and not numbered.. Election "monitors" were largely foreign

nationals without any official accreditation and mainly belonging to far right european parties.. The counting of "votes" was controlled by self-appointed governors seekign legimitization through

this theatrics..

The new elections only show that it's the same ole same ole in Ukraine. A bunch of corrupt oligarchs purporting to 'clean themselves up' who in fact have no intention of doing so for the most part. It will all be window dressing. Ask anyone here and that's what most think, outside the real nationalists who have thier own issues with the powers that be and have been in Kiev.

So in other words all of this is pretty much for nothing. I guess Nuland and her Neocon husband Kagan did put an even bigger stranglehold around the country for their 'friends' (connect the dots).

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/11204433/Ukrain...

By no standards this could be looked at as elections. No voter lists, no candidetes (only one who declared him self as prime minister), no international organization that observed these so called "elections" - nothing. If you should compare how fair & democratic these "elections" where than during USSR times it was even more fair and by election standards than this farce done by Putin regime goons. If these where elections than actually - anybandits could take in NY let's say 4 houses by force, declare them self as goverment and prime ministers than give out papers to sign people that are in those houses and - you have now new republic! This is BS! These where no elections. Only country in the world that recognizes them are Putin regime Russia - because it organized this crime in order to occupy more parts of Ukraine. And only media out there recognizes this crime as "elections" ar this ZeroHedge. SO once again ZeroHedge confirm that it is Putin regime propoganda asset.

Mean time in Russia is organized so called "Russian march" which was declared first in 2005 by Putin. In this march different kind of people marches and shouts slogans to clear Russia from non-russians. Russia must be pure russians. Shows nazi symbols and that famous Hi Hitler Nazi Salute.

All the events surrounding the coup in Ukraine and the subsequent outbreak of a civil war in the east of the country as well as the way the west interprets them are a clear indication of a very grim prospect. And that is WAR.Probably the last one in the history of mankind. Expecting that Putin/Russia will give in to economic pressure is very naive. It is not going to happen.

If Putin regime wont be stopped by force it will continue occupation using this "seperatist" tool an Russian world slogan. I think NATO should send in troops (Ukraine should ask them) and stop those Putin regime goons.

America invades, bombs, kills hundreds of thousands...Putin kills, um who, again? Oh, look, nobody. Crimea votes to be back in Russia and not one person is killed. Now the US does a coup in Ukraine, installs thugs marching under Hitler banners, people torched in buildings, mass graves and all of a sudden Putin is some kind of power mad guy who must be stopped? And what color is the sky on your planet?

Putin was able to occupy Crimea without any shots because at that time Ukraine military elite still was unloyal to Ukraine and still was corrupt and worked with Putin regime. But now things has changed and Ukranians fight back against Putin regime goon invasion. So Putin kills and thousands already have died - both on Ukraine side and Russian side. Ask those Russian soldier mothers and wifes who recieve info that their suns and husbands have died during training and heart attack. Thousands of them.

And you know - we in Latvia also had ultra nationalists that discredited nationalism in Latvia, later on we found out that they where organized by Russian embasy. No suprise! Same here. Ukranians where mad at corrupt regime which was ruled by Putin puppet and stole all wealth from people - so they stood against regime and what happened? They won! And than Putin regime organized ulta nationalists which is a small propotion walked on streets which RT and other Putin regime porpoganda filmed and brought here and there as only part of people who stood against corrupt regime.

Same KGB tactics from Putin side.

So creating a strawsman once again?

Makes no sense as one expects from your propaganda, which is high in cheapness.

Save displaying a constant need to take shelter in fantasy, vidorklis does not something else.

viedorklis bleated:

A typical product of Kievan Yatzi junta propaganda, with distorted views on reality, duplicity etc...

It is stupid, save you have this typical Kievan Yatzi mind set trying to lure the lower class to fight your wars for you.

this is simply wrong: "In this US-approved vote, the parties disapproved by the US were harassed and even essentially banned. But that’s OK."

first, the party was not banned. This "essentially" is just a weasel word. Banning a party means they can't put a list of candidates on a ballot. what happened here, and it's an internal parliamentary procedure unknown in the US or the UK, the parliament de-recognized a parliamentary fraction. In the article it's called a "faction" but it's essentially a fraction, and it's all about internal parliamentary procedures that have nothing to do with elections

second, note that in this case it's about the... Ukrainian Communist Party fraction in parliament, and the real story is that it's some elected members of this fraction that are leaving it, and so becoming what you could call "independents". But they are still elected Members of Parliament. Fractions are just "bunches" of MPs that swap with each other speaking time and other parliamentary prerogatives, like special funds. And a fraction that bleeds until it becomes less relevant does become de-recognized in nearly all parliaments

see here the definition: http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Parliamentary+Fraction

and here the wiki article: Parliamentary_group

"So much does the US administration hate the idea of unapproved people voting, that it even refused to call them elections, placing the very term in “scare quotes.”"

fine, so the article's authors think it's wrong to be critical of "unapproved voting". Besides the little fact that it's not constitutional, in Ukraine, let's think it through

philosophically, I find people staging an election outside the constitutional channel... charmingly radical

but I do defend the whole concept of democracy expressed in popular votes. And so I ask: where independent watchers allowed to monitor the election? And that's where the cookie crumbles... because they were... not

this is the critical point. if someone stages an election, sets up voting sites, but it's not possible for outsiders to check on the proper functioning of those elections... well, then those are sham elections. Then in the case of elections, if you have nothing to hide, you don't need to hide anything

a proper election is with paper ballots, transparent procedures and transparent monitoring, meaning everybody can show up and be present at all stages, except the very voting in the booth, to preserve the secret of the voter. It's not rocket science, it's tried, simple and tested methods

All three TV channels are controlled by the state: the majority share of Channel One belongs to Rosimuschestvo (the Federal Agency for State Property Management). Other shareholders include National Media Group (controlled by the structures of Yuri Kovalchuk, Chairman of the Board of Rossiya Bank, one of the largest banks in Russia, and Vladimir Putin’s personal friend; and Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea football club and Putin’s ally). Rossiya 2 is a part of VGTRK (All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company) which is owned by Rosimushchestvo. NTV is also controlled by the state through Gazprom Media. TNT and Pyatiy Kanal that come respectively fourth and fifth in the top TV channels by audience reach, are also controlled by the state. TNT belongs to Gazprom Media, while Channel 5 is controlled by National Media Group.

if both are going down in step then they end up with ore or less the same number of roubles.

i assume most of russia's government spending is in roubles - so it's a wash?

i wonder what low prices do to the US's shale?

It's not the "Putin regime ruble" jackass.

Would you call the US Dollar the Obama regime dollar? The Bush regime dollar?

It's the Russian Ruble, and it has been around for centuries.
