Goldman's Midterm Election Post Mortem

Tyler Durden's picture

Republicans have won majorities in the House and Senate. Results in some states have not yet been finalized, but Republican gains appear to be somewhat larger than most observers expected.

KEY POINTS:

1. Republicans have won a net seven seats in the Senate, giving them a majority of at least 52 seats. As of this writing, final results in Alaska, Louisiana, and Virginia have not yet been determined, but preliminary results suggest that Republicans will win another two seats in those states, for a total gain of nine seats. If so, this would lead to a final Senate composition of 54 Republicans and 46 Democrats (counting two independent senators who currently caucus with Democrats). Results in Alaska and Virginia should be settled soon, while the Louisiana contest will go to a runoff election to be held December 6.

2. Results in the House are not yet final but preliminary results show slightly greater Republican gains than many observers expected. Republicans currently hold 234 House seats and have won 12 additional seats so far, with results in several contests not yet finalized. Preliminary results in those other races indicate Republicans could end up with a roughly 15 seat overall gain, or just under 250 House seats.

3. Under a Republican congressional majority in both chambers, our expectation has been that the legislative agenda will be more active in 2015 than it has been over the last year, with a possibility of action on corporate tax reform and infrastructure funding, among other issues. We also see some risk of renewed uncertainty ahead of fiscal deadlines, at least until it becomes clear how issues such as the debt limit (likely necessary by October if not earlier) will be addressed.

4. The slightly larger than expected Republican gains should give Republicans more flexibility to get legislation to the President's desk, for two reasons:

  • First, the budget process allows Senate passage of certain fiscal measures with only a simple 51-vote majority, rather than the 60 votes often required. This process would have been difficult to use with a very narrow Republican majority, since finding unanimous Republican support might be difficult in light of divisions within the party, but it could become more important if Republicans hold 54 seats.
  • Second, some Republican-supported legislation would be closer to the 60 votes usually needed to pass the Senate. This could come into play regarding incremental policy changes where there is some Democratic support, such as approval of the Keystone pipeline, for example.

Oh look....the gold and silver shit show collapse is on again (Not for me anymore)....and stocks are up up and away.  I am so thankful to all of you for voting Republican, and now the real work and legisalation can get passed.  Now that the stock markets have been reaffirmed at new highs, and there is no chance of it ever going down, I would highly advise that you sell cash out on all of your metals and get it into the stock market while you still can at these discount prices.  I would say that if you are able to get in before 19,000, you are still in good shape.  I am refinancing my house today, going all in.  And thank God I was able to dump that metal.  I was in a panic sell, so I just listed it all on ebay at Buy it Now for $14 an ounce...and it sold...can you believe how stupid someone was to buy it all?  From having a bunch of Heavy Metal to Paypal, right into Facebook all in a matter of hours.....As this pans out to be the trade of the century, I will be starting a financial advise site.  If anyone wants in on the ground floor of this just shoot me an email.  You will soon be seeing me on MSNBC right next to Zuckerberg crushing those fools like Schiff and Harvey Organ.  WHat a great day.

same thing happened in the 90's, maybe not on the same scale, it was the Gingrich/Republican with their 100 day contract with America. Clinton wouldn't go along and shut down the government. The Repub. capitulated then and they will do so again. The Repubs have no balls! That was when I got sick of the Rebups and became an Independent. Fuck 'em!

I think Barry will risk a consitutional crisis and see whether Boehner/McConnell have any backbone to fight back. My bet is they have no spine and push forth a bunch of pre-chewed initiatives and give Obama what he wants anyway. This will be a 2 year phenomenon if they don't show a little guts.

I believe McConnell has already backtracked from repealing ACA because "51 votes won't do it" even though he can use reconciliation to repeal with 51. In fact, he campaigned on that notion.

D_G,

It would take a 2/3 vote because President Obama would veto any repeal of ACA.

The Republicans will repeal Obamacare but leave the IRS rule that you must have health insurance or be taxed (fined).

Then premiums will go up 15%-25% per year and healthcare stocks will go to the moon.

The FED will not be audited, and the bailout of Wall Street will continue.

The NSA will not be shut down, and the police state will grow larger.

"Hope and Change" works both ways these days.

What makes it worse is that judging by results of Obamacare (Medicare, Medicaid et cetera), none of them would classify as a “healthcare”.  Instead, it would be more accurate to call them “deathcares”.

Their purposes are to eliminate private workers as quickly as possible after retirement; thus, saving Social Security another few years, and the inevitable accountability for those who plundered its assets.

After all, what else can we say about a program that subsidizes poisonous concoctions a trillion $/year for the next 75 years – with the Prescription Drug and Modernization Act.

Few people seem to understand that every prescription drug is a poison.  This is why it has to be “approved” by the FDA.  Before a company can submit its concoction to the FDA, it has to provide a so-called form LD-50; Lethal Dosage 50%; the form lists the dosage that would kill 50% of those that ingest it.

You figure it out: vitamins, enzymes, minerals and other health supplements improve one’s health, prolongs life and generally produce a higher-quality life… and none are subsidized by criminal and useful-idiot classes.  My health regimen includes such supplements; and has caused me to REDUCE – not SLOW the aging process – fifty years.  As a result, I have the coordination, health and physical condition of a professional athlete around the age of 20; I am over 70 years of age.  My validation is the best evidence possible: physical performance (video and webpage – each leads to the other).

On the other hand, prescription drugs – each a small dose of poison – tear up the body, shut down organs, and hasten degeneration; and, usually lead to a very ugly end.  And prescription drug peddlers receive a trillion/year for the next 75 years (practically, to the end of time).

I hope that if you are working for the EPA or the Department of Education that you are scared to death of losing your jobs.....I hope they do...cutting regulations means cutting the jobs that make up that crap..and thousands more to cut...

"cutting regulations means cutting the jobs that make of that crap"

Not necessarily. Frequently, perhaps every time, when regs are cut, related bureaucrats are simply assigned other duties, like gazing out their windows, congregating around water coolers, watching child porn on agency computers, bringing a group of orphans into the office for... it's gets rather hairy.

I know this from serving as a trustee for a legal defense fund for a couple that were sheltering a mother and four kids (3-11) on the run from a molesting father. I eventually collected evidence from government sources that indicated a gang of pedophiles had captured several agencies of state and federal governments in SE US; the kind that perpetrated ritual murders to persuade kids to keep quiet.  Check in with my link… if you dare.

Don’t get your hopes up… unless you’re one of those peasants who can be pacified with pink, or blue, chains, instead of black ones.

After all, who is there that still believes there is a difference between red and blue: the substance and policies are the same, only a different color.

If there is to be any correction; if criminal and useful-idiot classes are to be made accountable for what they have done, we will have to depend on forums of redress not controlled by those classes: we will have to duplicate what American Founders did, minus their mistakes.

Ah, and that’s the problem: no one, it seems, knows what Founders did; or that we possess the same powers they employed.

You see, Americans have the power to redress any grievance that could be named – and thus, exercise sovereignty; but they REFUSE to use that power. There are three main reasons for this failure: one is that they have no knowledge of such power (that is, the power is UNKNOWN); the second, they’ve been herded into a kind of impotent stupor by medication and indoctrination; the third, that they aid, benefit or were complicit in such evil.

There’s a remedy for all three of these failures: 1) learn, and use, the law and procedures of redress (full article); 2) follow a health regimen that has REDUCED – not slowed – my biological age 50 years (it also un-does the damage done by medication and indoctrination); and, 3) see number one.

This health regimen has given me the coordination, health and physical condition of a professional athlete around the age of 20; I’m 70 years of age (for validation, video and webpage – each leads to the other).

Not only do Americans not know this power, they also do not know most, maybe all, of the ideals won/confirmed by the Revolution.

For example, in October of 1774, the Continental Congress sent an Appeal to the Inhabitants of Quebec to invite them to join the budding revolution.  In this declaration, Americans listed three “Grand Rights” they wanted to confirm with the rebellion: the right of consent, the right to withhold taxes until government redressed grievances, and the right of trial by jury.  Some current Americans have heard of the first right (but know nothing about it); more Americans give lip service to the third right; but practically none have heard of the second.

Even tho you have this right, I strongly suggest that you not try to assert it; you’ll get savaged by the federal terrorists  like they savaged me.

Why do I call them “terrorists”?  It’s because an act of terrorism is any act that causes “dread or fright”.  So, how do you feel when you receive a letter from the IRS?

I'm sure the first pieces of business the GOP will address are: abortions, tax cuts for the 1%, limiting access to birth control, school prayer, and other stupid, conniving bullshit that pegs their collective world knowledge to about the early 1600s.

Both parties are sewer sludge. The fact that 'Muricans are so fucking stupid as to keep electing them is astounding.
