Saudi Stocks, Currency Tumble As Aramco Pipeline Explodes; ISIS Sabotage Concerns

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: Nothing to see here, move along...

  • ARABIAN SECURITY SOURCE SAYS FIRE OCCURRED IN AN OIL PIPELINE, NOT TERRORIST ATTACK.
  • FIRE BROKE OUT DURING REPAIERS, NOW UNDER CONTROL

*  *  *

It appears Saudi markets are back in play. As Bloomberg's Richard Breslow noted this morning, Riyal forwards have jerked notably higher (implying weakness expected) and the Tadawul All Share Index has dropped 7% in the last 2 days after the killing of Shi'ites by unknown parties and now news that a pipeline has exploded. As Breslow warns, "if that indeed signifies the spread of Islamic State into Saudi Arabia, it would be the first time they crossed Saudi borders. That would be a big deal and a major escalation of problems over in that part of the world, far beyond what it would do to capital markets."

Yesterday there were attacks on Shi'ites (as Reuters reported)

Saudi security forces on Tuesday shot dead a member of an armed group that killed five people in an overnight attack on Shi'ite Muslims marking an important religious anniversary, al-Arabiya television reported.

The late Monday assault on a Shi'ite gathering in al-Ahsa district is likely to test already strained relations between Sunnis and Shi'ites across the Middle East because it coincided with the annual Ashoura commemoration of Shi'ite Islam.

The Dubai-based al-Arabiya said security forces who had been hunting suspects in the al-Ahsa attack clashed with and killed "a wanted man" at a rest area in the al-Qassim province, north-west of the capital Riyadh.

... and today, what is allegedly an Aramco pipeline, just exploded near the town of Sudair, south of Riyadh.

*  *  *

The Region:

*  *  *

Has sent stocks and the currency reeling.

And sparked a $2 surge in WTI crude

*  *  *

* * *

It would appear the Saudis might need US 'protection' after all.. how convenient as they continue their attacks on the US Shale industry.

As OilPro adds, two other discussions are going around trading desks:

  • This is a way to get oil prices to go back up without the Saudis appearing to give in and defend price by voluntarily cutting supply. A pipeline explosion will automatically decrease production.
  • The US Elections are over, time for prices at the pump to go back up now. This plays on the long-tenured theory that gasoline prices tend to be lowest right before elections as the incumbent party leverages their power to please the masses.

Maybe Obola,Nuland talked the scum House of z-Saud into this.  They saw how Obola and the scummy Dems got nuked last night and realized cheap oil was a bad idea.

Prince Citicorp (the one who runs their investments) was freaking out yesterday.

I would love to see the Russians, Yemenis, Syrians, Iraqis and Hezbollah go after the House of Saud.  String up the whole miserable klan.

They have caused so much misery in the Middle East.

if these pipelines traverse across thousands of miles of desert in the MIDEAST the question isn't why was this particular line sabotaged but why aren't they getting blown up every day?

because this is the theater of the absurd, and so it must necessarily be absurd.  and it is.  and that's the beauty of 'terrorism'.  from a rational perspective, there is little to no reason for a 'terrorist' to operate; for at a basic and primordial level, every human being functions according to an instinctive mechanism, by which he evaluates a given scenario and either participates or doesn't -- based on his final tabulation of net gain.  small bands of zealots seeking to wreck and ruin for purely ideological/religious reasons does not square with an understanding of this basic human impulse.  acts of sabotage and mass-murder are almost never carried out by groups of more than five or so half-wits; which is why they're almost never 'acts' and are almost always 'attempts'.  you see, rational actors must reasonably believe they have something to gain.  this contrived 'terrorist' narrative is bull-shit for that reason alone; in that, 'terrorists' have nothing to gain and everything to lose.  moreover, it is almost impossible to convince a human being to knowingly commit suicide (even by brainwashing) for any cause whatsoever; and the difficulty in convincing several to do so simultaneously is near to inconceivable.  it's all so laughable; but to the tinsel-media saturated western mind it all seem so plausible.

and that is why the pipelines in nigera are open sieves...it's not because the west africans are savvier pipeline busters, it's because they're thieves, and they have a rational motive for stealing crude in the delta region -- as they have a reasonable expectation to get the crude to clandestine markets without being captured.

my point is, yes, ZH Snob is right, literally thousands of miles of unguarded pipelines to blast away at with little to no fear of reprisal -- if there were such a thing as 'actual' terrorism, that is.  these pipelines aren't tapped for theft because there is a low probability of getting tanker trucks full of crude to a transfer station without the vice-police cruisin in to shahira their asses to paradise.  however, if there were actual 'terrorists' who simply wanted to sow havoc, they'd have a hey-day bustin pipelines from sudan to kazakstan.  it's the same reason we haven't seen acts of terrorism in this country that make sense from the perspective of maximum gain and minimal risk for the 'terrorist'...it's all been spectacular theater of the absurd, hollywooded-up for the bleating imbeciles who line up in droves to vote.

i will however say that we do face something of a threat from islamic nation-states acting in collusion for ideological/religious purposes.  in that scenario, there is a potential for gain sufficient to compel the participants to do something dastardly.  the thing of it is, 'terrorism' (as it's presently understood) is the most counterproductive strategy for nation-states to engage in who stand no chance whatsoever of overthrowing their rivals militarily.

all of which is why it's so easy to contrive acts of terrorism by a nation within its own nation and its client states; because you'll have an out-right monopoly on the enterprise; because no other group would have a rational motive for engaging in such; and most of all because, if you're trying to sculpt and sway the opinions of a simple-minded citizenry, there is no better way than by scaring the shit out of them and by it affirming within them their sense 'goodness' versus the 'badness' intrinsic in those strange-looking others.  as every great salesman knows, if you're selling someone something they don't need or really want, all you have to do is appeal to their sense of moral-vanity.  look, if i were wrong, there would be no such thing as a carbon-credit market; there would be no organized religion; no one would've ever heard of a low-flow showerhead (goddam those pestiferous spray-nozzles); and, well, the world would be a better place.  but moral vanity is here to stay...some of you are right now buoyed by this idiotic notion that 'change' is on the way from last nights trick-or-treating.

BOO!,

Saudi Arabia has been the focus of evil in the Middle East for decades.  Sooner or later, blowback was expected.

Saudi Arabia has deployed thousands of troops from Egypt and Pakistan along its border with Iraq, amid fears of invasion by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

Saudi Arabia has been strengthening its border defences since the crisis in Iraq heightened in June.

Panicked by the advance of ISIS, Riyadh has taken the drastic step of calling in military assistance from its close allies to shore up the long 500-mile border, Gulf security sources said last week.

At least there's some good news this election. GMO labelling approved in Oregon, GMO banned on Maui, marijuana legalization approved many places.

Unfortunately, GMO is part of TPP, the Republican congress will approve fast-track for TPP, and every law requiring labelling for GMO foods will be overturned at once by the secret terms of a secret treaty. Internet control and editing under control of corporations is also part of TPP.

Passing stuff in treaties that would never see the light of day if passed as a domestic law is known as policy laundering.

"This plays on the long-tenured theory that gasoline prices tend to be lowest right before elections as the incumbent party leverages their power to please the masses."

Oh, that worked well yesterday! Add another broken correlation to the pile.

That really only works if the masses are relatively satisfied to begin with - then its kind of the cherry on the top. Our masses are generally displeased. I suspect many Democrats are disenchanted and were profoundly disinterested in the midterms. All they really have to do is stay away from the polls to send a message. I've noted before that we tend to give a sitting president an opposition congress in an attempt to reign him in. I don't think, in this age of executive order work arounds, it is going to be especially effective. As far as Obamacare goes I don't think it will be touched.

"Obamacare" was imagined earlier as "ClintonCare" via Hilary when Bill was in orifice - sorry! office.

so it's a long-term plot being enacted, as you realise.  it both props up the pharma-death-care industry and all its worker-bees, and it promotes ill-health maintenance while profiteering for insurance/pharma corps.

that fewer folks will survive to collect "retirement bennies" - win win.

And isn't it odd how the net result of Obamacare has been to raise the cost of health care for the masses? It goes back to a very old conspiracy, announced as far back as 1967: make the food bad to make the people sick, and raise the cost of healthcare so that only the rich can afford it. Wise people will eat organic, the rest deserve to die young. Population control is not just about abortion, bitchez.

It seems as if the Sauds are behind the attack on Syria and the bombing by the US of Syrian pipelines.

Maybe this is just well deserved payback.

It was ISIS that blew up the Saudi pipeline....

ISIS is the CIA tool in the Middle East - we know that for sure. Just because you sometimes have to 'bang your tool against the brics' sometimes to shake off the dirt doesn't mean it's not still your tool - it is, and you use it.

So in this case, the U.S. is using ISIS, sending a signal to Saudi Arabia that trying to crash the shale oil boom is a dangerous game.

If you try to go against the U.S. you just might get destroyed. It's a desperate, dangerous global dictatorship doing whatever it takes to stay on top.

Gone is the USA. We dont have a government. It is a free-for-all of murder and theft utilizing taxpayer-funded armies...both official and unofficial... So you see, Joe, it's not the "US" using ISIS. We the People don't own ISIS. It belongs to an out of control consortium focused on protecting interests most unsavory. This horde of treacherous oligarchs has nothing in common with the general welfare of the US citizen, or any nation's citizens. Its an evil cult. A club, like skull n bones. A coven.

It was created by what we coin as "TPTB". A cancer on humanity. The Demonrats were but children to be toyed with by these subterrainean beasts...easily bought...but the Republicans are likely as dangerous. They love to war and murder. It is what they are best at, stirring their constituency into a voracious appetite for death abroad. Republicans and democrats alike; tools of the ziocon.

This private army, this "ISIS", is but another construct of forces dark, completely sovereign unto themselves, and maniacal...and yet likely with origins domestic to the US of A. Our future wars will be fought by hired thugs. Low-rent pinkertons. Who will be footing the bill? You. Yes, you. The fight we are in is to identify just which monster is pulling the strings of this putrid marionette and to identify it's hellish origin.

We have private armies renaming themselves a half-dozen times, created and funded by the neocons and ziocons with YOUR money, keeping the oligarchs whole for their access to a stream of poisonous fiat. These men, Haliburton's boys, do the bidding of a demonic cartel of nationless monsters. Sure, some of them have US and Israeli passports, but that's irrelevant. They answer to no sovereign body of citizens. No law can touch them. They answer to a hideous band of black-souled psychopaths which prays before the altar of murder, usury and enslavement of humanity.

I have seen comments that call out Putin as the source of this mayhem. Good God, nothing could be further from the truth. If there is a diety overseeing what has been wrought by these philistine boy-lovers, let him end it. Soon.

Better that they are raping English women then Syrian, Libyan and Iraqi women!... When England's done training them send them to the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia and maybe if it happens enough the "little people" in these Countries who are paying for it with their hard earned tax money might be empowered to make it stop!

The firs occured in an oil pipeline -- which either gives ISIS a new idea -- or it is something ISIS already did and is being covered up because it doesn't fit with the 'low oil price plan'.  Watch not what they say, but what they do.

UK mainstream online press is not carrying this story at all.

Perhaps there are discussions in progress to come up with a story that blames the Russians.

They must confer first to come up with something vaguely palusible and then all present the same story.

You should stop believing instantly anything somebody posts in the net. The pipeline story is false: http://www.emergent.info/oil-pipeline-saudi . So is the rest of the interpretation. Advice for newspaper editors (and net users): "If your mother says she loves you, check it out!"
