90-Year-Old WW2 Veteran Faces 60 Days In Jail For... Feeding The Homeless

– Florida police to 90-year-old WW2 vet Arnold Abbott as he tried to feed homeless people

Last week, I reported on the very disturbing fact that a Boynton Beach, Florida police officer had been accused of raping a 20-year old woman at gunpoint while on duty. A week later, we learn that police just 33 miles south, in Fort Lauderdale, raided a 90-year old World War II veteran and two clergymen and charged them with feeding the homeless. Under a new law, these three humanitarians face penalties of up to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail for, well, being humanitarians. No, I’m not making this up.

We learn from WPLG Local10:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police charged three men — including two pastors and a 90-year-old man — for feeding the homeless in public on Sunday, the first such cases made by the city after the a new ordinance effectively banning public food sharings took effect Friday.

The first to be charged was homeless advocate Arnold Abbott, 90, who has been feeding the homeless in Fort Lauderdale for more than 20 years. Also cited were two Christian ministers — Dwayne Black, pastor of The Sanctuary Church in Fort Lauderdale, and Mark Sims of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Coral Springs.

All three men face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” said Abbott, who runs a nonprofit group called Love Thy Neighbor, Inc. “It’s man’s inhumanity to man is all it is.”

“I don’t do things to purposefully aggravate the situation,” said Abbott. “I’m trying to work with the city. Any human has the right to help his fellow man.”

The Broward Palm Beach New Times, adds some additional color on the situation, particularly with regard to the area’s history of mistreating the homeless:

Benjamin Waxman, ACLU lead attorney in the landmark Pottinger v. City of Miamisettlement agreement, calls Fort Lauderdale’s treatment of the homeless “evocative of conditions in Miami before the Pottinger case began” back in 1988.

The Pottinger case established limited protections against criminalizing homelessness in Miami and last year withstood an effort by that city to eliminate its core protections, including ones related to food-sharing and camping. Prior to Pottinger’s original filing, official police abuse of Miami’s homeless, often carried out by its so-called “bum squad,” had become notorious and included such acts of cruelty as the seizure by Miami Police Department officers of homeless persons’ property, which was then burned as they were forced to watch.

The confiscation of the property of six homeless persons in Fort Lauderdale that was overseen by an as-yet-unidentified FLPD officer, alleged to have occurred on the morning of September 24, is just one of countless incidents of abuse reported by homeless people in recent months that justify the comparison with Miami.

An inquiry a week after the incident allegedly occurred to FLPD’s property room manager, Dawn Ramage, confirmed that no property had been turned in despite a requirement that all seized property be stored for at least 30 days. Nor were the homeless folk who spoke about the theft of their property, including one woman whose breathing medication was taken, given a 24-hour notice as the personal property ordinance mandates. The woman, Renee (full name withheld for fear of retribution), who suffers from COPD, wound up in Broward General Hospital for three days because she couldn’t access her medication. Seven bags of recyclables, which the homeless had been collecting to exchange for cash, were also seized in that incident.

Yep, makes sense. Homeless people have basically nothing, so may as well take what little they have. That’ll show em.

Arnold Abbott’s take was the same melodic riff he’s been trumpeting for years: “I went through World War 2. I fought in the Civil Rights movement. This won’t stop us. All this did was move us to court earlier than we had planned.”

Here’s the face of an American “criminal” in 2014. Meanwhile, still not a single bank executive behind bars.

Screen Shot 2014-11-05 at 11.37.24 AM

Truly sad it takes a 90-year-man engaging in civil disobedience to demonstrate to the rest of us how apathetic and spineless we have become.

The mistake this 90 year old guy made was in not bringing donuts with him when he brought the food to the homeless. Do any of you really think the cops would cut off their own gravy train? Not a chance.

Note to all who want to avoid arrest. Keep a dozen donuts on your person and announce clearly to approaching officer that you are armed with irresistable and fluffy sweet cake like treats.

You guys keep ranting about the cops - it's *not* them.

Some SOB POS in Town Hall or the City passed an ordinance *empowering* the cop to do these things.

Look to your city halls.

First it starts with not allowing the homeless to be fed.  Next it will be like Columbia where police will pour gasoline on children hiding in the sewers and light them up.

Meanwhile America has a excess inventory of housing to the tune of 40 million - which is probably enough to give every homeless person in the country *two* houses.

Would WW2 have kicked off if the populous had the benefits of the internet, such as email, blogs, and youtube? If it was printed in the newspapers, it HAD to be true, right?

I am not trying to degrade or detract from this old mans actions, but with the information we possess today, I think the idea of a "war hero" had been laid to rest.

When even the soldiers are saying "don't thank me for my service.", it is way past time to reevaluate the situation.

Hunger and hopelessness does funny things to a guy but very rarely does it suddenly make a man smarter.  Very rarely does it make somone say, "Hey!  I don't need to be hungry.  I can just go to the bank, borrow a shitload of money, buy some capital, hire some of my homeless mates and become a capitalist entrepreneur!"

But to get around the problem:  "I wasn't giving away food.  I was selling it with no money down and negotiable finance terms".  Oh, but then you'll need a vendor's licence.

What if, instead of feeding the homeless, you invite them into the restaurants and buy them lunch or dinner?  Would that "solve" the problem?

Personally, I think this is more of an attack on a Christian ministry. How many Muslim charities do you see jailed?

I gave my bread away today to a homeless man I see every Thursday when I go out for lunch. The man is emaciated and sits quietly in the same location. I don't know his story but I'm guessing its a sad one. He is always very courteous when he takes my small offering. " Thank you nice Lady" is the response I got today when I placed the bread in his shaking hands. Who knows? He could be a drunk or drug addict but when you see someone obviously hungry, these things really don't matter.

I always give food, granola bar, a water bottle, money, whatever I have on hand if a homeless person is begging on the street or in traffic. People with me sometimes say, "you know they're just going to buy drugs with that", or "they're probably hungover or jonsing for another hit and will just puke that up".

I usually laugh and agree with a smile. I leave it unsaid, that if its real charity, it's not conditional and whatever the person does with it is their choice. It's not about what is done with it that matters, it's about doing it.

We're all in this mixed up shit together, the least we can do is treat each other with a sliver of dignity when we get the opportunity.

I hear this too when I give money to the homeless. I realize that people who say such thing are just justifying their own retarded inability to be generous. People are very telling when money is envolved. No one ever followed or respected a cheap person. If you want your voice to be heard and effective you need to accompany that with generosity. Godbless.

Many of the homeless suffer from mental illness of one type or another. Years ago {before President Raygun}, there were state hospitals for these people. No more. They were mostly closed, and the "Community Approach" was ushered in. This way, they are given a bottle of pills, and dropped off at the nearest mission. For many of these poor souls, family either can't or won't deal with them, so they are cast out onto the street. Ever see a obviously homeless person walking down the street, talking to him/herself? That is what schizophrenia looks like. They seldom can manage to stay on their meds unsupervised. Lately, police have simply been shooting them, and without any consequences either. What a pathetic collection of people 'mercuns have become to allow this. How long before the euthanasia programs become mandatory?

I once saw a chilling interview of a worker in a concentration camp. The interviewer asked how it felt to incinerate all those people. The man misunderstood and explained it was very hard work, the doors to the crematorium ovens were very heavy and his arms and shoulder ached all the time. The interviewer could not impart what he was really trying to ask and brought in a German translator to help. When the man finally understood he said it was just a job and he was happy to have a regular wage at a time when good paying work was difficult to find.

I have never forgotten this. The look on his face was devoid of all humanity and empathy. These individuals are the real enemy in a totalitarian situation. Those that won't say no simply because they don't care.

And the real tragedy that precipitated this - destroying an economy, a society, the currency, and making people so hungry and desperate to survive that they are willing to abandon their empathy and humanity in order to survive.

Something a lot of people don't know is that ~80% of the Gestapo (yes that Gestapo) was actually made up former regular police officers from the Weimar government.  Not fanatical Nazis like most people think.

See, the thing is that there are numerous people in any society who worship authority, and will enforce ANY law, without any consideratoin as to the morality or justness of a law.

If a law was passed in this country that all speeders, drug users, or DWI suspects would be summarily executed on the roadside, many police would be glad to carry out the sentence, and many Americans would applaud such a law.  I've heard/read a large number of people over the years who advocated just such a punishment for 'drug' users (some drugs but not their favorite of course).

That's a characteristic of any gathering of humans. There are always some sick fucks who are willing to do anything to please their masters or who enjoy hurting others.

Because "it's the law".

According to some British troops that liberated a CC in Germany, the scariest part was the attitude of the camp workers/guards: none of them seemed to feel any guilt or have any sense that what they had done was wrong. They only felt like "I'm just doing my job, and it's the law".

The world would be a much better place if we could develop a test for that genotype, and forcefully exile them to North Korea or anywhere but here!

Such as these have no place in my version of Heaven, to be sure.

Really someone needs to go after the city the passed the bylaw. Find a way to personally sue the major and councilors. Put a lien on their house.

Sue the police officer who stole the homeless persons belongings and medication (yes sizing person possessions and destroying them is theft).

You need a wealthy strong Christian lawyer to launch lawsuit after lawsuit. You need someone who cares,

Why are the people of Fort Lauderdale not marching in protest against this? Why do they not throw out their mayor? There is far too much I'm OK and F everyone else.

"Put no other God before me." Unfortunately most people make money thier god.

To be fair, most of them were either bamboozled by the LIHOP Pearl Harbor event, or once the initial enthusiasm wore off (1944) were drafted.  Just like most of the next generation in Vietnam.

If someone puts a gun to your head and says "you're joining the army to kill the enemies of the United States" it's not the same thing as volunteering. Not even close.

So to say that WWII vets or Vietnam vets are guilty of something would fail to acknowledge that it was the elected leadership of the US that got this country into both of those wars contrary to what the majority of the country wanted at the time.

The leadership back then was culpable, just as the current leadership is culpable now.

Except today's military is 100% volunteer**. Seen objectively, in what way are our soldiers any different from a typical Wehrmacht soldat?  Outside of America's propaganda bubble, they are viewed as occupiers and aggressors.

At least some of these volunteers are now waking up.  Ron Paul's support from active duty military was a very good sign IMO.

**I understand the concept of 'economic draft',  Where I live the .mil is the best career option for young men graduating high school but no real college prospects. The factories are gone, the trades swallowed up by illegals, and most small businesses are also gone. What we have left here is Walmart, Lowes, Tractor Supply, fast food, and our biggest industries: health care and government workers, the most prosperous groups in this county -- no layoffs, closings, off-shoring going on in those two -- something about protected monopolies but I digress.**

Feeding the homeless is not illegal.  It's how they go about feeding them in public or outdoors that is illegal.  I'm not taking a position on the topic, just clarifying things.

"The new rules say that feeding sites cannot be within 500 feet of each other, that only one is allowed in any given city block and that any site would have to be at least 500 feet away from residential properties.

Commissioners agreed to permit most churches to have indoor feeding programs, even those close to residential neighborhoods.

But the exception did not apply to outdoor programs. Organizations distributing food outdoors would also need the permission of the property owner and would have to provide portable toilets for use by workers and those being fed."
