90-Year-Old WW2 Veteran Faces 60 Days In Jail For... Feeding The Homeless

– Florida police to 90-year-old WW2 vet Arnold Abbott as he tried to feed homeless people

Last week, I reported on the very disturbing fact that a Boynton Beach, Florida police officer had been accused of raping a 20-year old woman at gunpoint while on duty. A week later, we learn that police just 33 miles south, in Fort Lauderdale, raided a 90-year old World War II veteran and two clergymen and charged them with feeding the homeless. Under a new law, these three humanitarians face penalties of up to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail for, well, being humanitarians. No, I’m not making this up.

We learn from WPLG Local10:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police charged three men — including two pastors and a 90-year-old man — for feeding the homeless in public on Sunday, the first such cases made by the city after the a new ordinance effectively banning public food sharings took effect Friday.

The first to be charged was homeless advocate Arnold Abbott, 90, who has been feeding the homeless in Fort Lauderdale for more than 20 years. Also cited were two Christian ministers — Dwayne Black, pastor of The Sanctuary Church in Fort Lauderdale, and Mark Sims of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Coral Springs.

All three men face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

“One of the police officers said, ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I were carrying a weapon,” said Abbott, who runs a nonprofit group called Love Thy Neighbor, Inc. “It’s man’s inhumanity to man is all it is.”

“I don’t do things to purposefully aggravate the situation,” said Abbott. “I’m trying to work with the city. Any human has the right to help his fellow man.”

The Broward Palm Beach New Times, adds some additional color on the situation, particularly with regard to the area’s history of mistreating the homeless:

Benjamin Waxman, ACLU lead attorney in the landmark Pottinger v. City of Miamisettlement agreement, calls Fort Lauderdale’s treatment of the homeless “evocative of conditions in Miami before the Pottinger case began” back in 1988.

The Pottinger case established limited protections against criminalizing homelessness in Miami and last year withstood an effort by that city to eliminate its core protections, including ones related to food-sharing and camping. Prior to Pottinger’s original filing, official police abuse of Miami’s homeless, often carried out by its so-called “bum squad,” had become notorious and included such acts of cruelty as the seizure by Miami Police Department officers of homeless persons’ property, which was then burned as they were forced to watch.

The confiscation of the property of six homeless persons in Fort Lauderdale that was overseen by an as-yet-unidentified FLPD officer, alleged to have occurred on the morning of September 24, is just one of countless incidents of abuse reported by homeless people in recent months that justify the comparison with Miami.

An inquiry a week after the incident allegedly occurred to FLPD’s property room manager, Dawn Ramage, confirmed that no property had been turned in despite a requirement that all seized property be stored for at least 30 days. Nor were the homeless folk who spoke about the theft of their property, including one woman whose breathing medication was taken, given a 24-hour notice as the personal property ordinance mandates. The woman, Renee (full name withheld for fear of retribution), who suffers from COPD, wound up in Broward General Hospital for three days because she couldn’t access her medication. Seven bags of recyclables, which the homeless had been collecting to exchange for cash, were also seized in that incident.

Yep, makes sense. Homeless people have basically nothing, so may as well take what little they have. That’ll show em.

Arnold Abbott’s take was the same melodic riff he’s been trumpeting for years: “I went through World War 2. I fought in the Civil Rights movement. This won’t stop us. All this did was move us to court earlier than we had planned.”

Here’s the face of an American “criminal” in 2014. Meanwhile, still not a single bank executive behind bars.

Screen Shot 2014-11-05 at 11.37.24 AM

Truly sad it takes a 90-year-man engaging in civil disobedience to demonstrate to the rest of us how apathetic and spineless we have become.

I can't take a positon.  I don't live in Ft. Lauderdale and I don't know what the situation is there.  But, I have read that the same commission that enacted the rulz on feeding the homeless also enacted rulz to try to curb a problem with homeless people shitting in public.  Maybe these same volunteers can go around burying human shit - out of sight of God, if we want to keep with the religious tone of many of the comments.

Personally, I think homelessness is a tragedy, but I don't know enough about the subject to understand the causes.  I also think that if this story was about Al Sharpton being locked up for feeding a bunch of homeless blacks, the comments here would be very different.

The fact that this man is 90 years old and a veteran is absolutely irrelevant.

I was trying to point out that this man was not arrested for simply feeding the homeless.  If he had invited the homeless into his church and fed them, he would not have been arrested.  They did not outlaw feeding the homeless.

Edit:  I choose to not take a position.

Meh, you might feel differently if you lived across the street from one of the public venues where they stage these do-gooder events. Great idea. Make sure all the gang bangers and hooligans are nice and full before they venture out into the local park looking for grandmothers to mug for crack money. If these clergymen want to feed the homeless, let them do so in their own church buildings and on their own church yards. These are local laws that local governments have every right to consider and enact or not according to local conditions as they see fit.

How does one become homeless? Bad decisions, drug or alcohol dependency, bad upbringing, etc.--Not by choice.

How does one become a psychopathic pol, crat, or thug targeting people in support of the banksters? By choice.

I call that a logic hole, and It seems that I fell right into a deep one with that comment.

I think that the overall point I was trying to make still stands, though highly diluted by the logic hole--people tend to fall into homelessness, but the psychopaths that target them, do it willingly.

Thanks, again.

The Aristocracy does not hold with feeding the poor! The poor are poor and there it is! They will always be with us, feeding them only encourages their poverty of mind and soul. I say, lets put the police state onto it, shall we not? Those chaps are quite up to shaking up the old boy, just because the old lad fought a bit in the war doesn't allow him to rise too far in his station, eh what? Lets have those nice police chaps, we pay so much to keep the rabble in order, sort the old boy out. A few days in jail will be proper enough in any case. Considering messiahs or buddhas in the context of quantum mechanics, their actualization of the godhead is applicable to every conscious being of a lower order throughout infinity. The nature of dimensional reality requires that if He did it, regardless of His opinion of you, you're good no matter what, and if its bullshit it doesn't matter. While the Kali Yuga may be attractive to the fatalists around here, its just a revisionist toy for academic dickheads who shouldn't be allowed to govern anything because they can't function outside the asylum. Cops generally follow orders. The question is who gave the orders to go after those feeding the homeless. Obviously somebody in the command structure made the decision - there are so many crimes being committed in every jurisdiction that somebody has to be in charge of prioritizing.

So, who is the Nazi who gave the order. THAT is who should be identified, shamed, fired, and lynched.

This sort of stuff has been going on in USA long before Obama. Rudy Giuliani was widely cheered for "cleaning up" Times Square back in the 1990s.

Of course, it wasn't just homeless. Panhandlers, whores, and petty drug dealers were cleaned up, too. (But they left clowns, street musicians, and "the naked cowboy" alone.) Cops were stationed everywhere.

It was very good for tourism. It made the shopper/pedestrian feel safer. And it did wonders for real estate values.

In the end, that is what all this war against poverty turned out to be. Hide it and keep it away from the general public.

Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled!

2 She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God.

3 Her officials within her are roaring lions; her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning.

4 Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law.

5 The Lord within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.

6 “I have destroyed nations; their strongholds are demolished. I have left their streets deserted, with no one passing through. Their cities are laid waste; they are deserted and empty.

7 Of Jerusalem I thought, ‘Surely you will fear me and accept correction!’ Then her place of refuge would not be destroyed, nor all my punishments come upon her. But they were still eager to act corruptly in all they did.

8 Therefore wait for me,” declares the Lord, “for the day I will stand up to testify. I have decided to assemble the nations, to gather the kingdoms and to pour out my wrath on them— all my fierce anger. The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger.

9 “Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the Lord and serve him shoulder to shoulder.

10 From beyond the rivers of Cush my worshipers, my scattered people, will bring me offerings.

11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill.

12 But I will leave within you the meek and humble. The remnant of Israel will trust in the name of the Lord.

13 They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.”

14 Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!

15 The Lord has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.

16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.

17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

18 “I will remove from you all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals, which is a burden and reproach for you.

19 At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you. I will rescue the lame; I will gather the exiles. I will give them praise and honor in every land where they have suffered shame.

20 At that time I will gather you; at that time I will bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes,” says the Lord.

I don't have the right, nor should the government have the right, to tell that vet what to do with his money. I may or may not want to feed homeless folks. But I will fight for his right to make the choice to do that.

You don't have to agree with how he is spending his time and resources. You better get it that they will start telling you what to do next. Then make a law and arrest your ass.

So, those 'wackos' over in Los Angeles do things a bit differently when it comes to the homeless situation.  Remember Jerry Van Dike? Take a look at this 'gala' for the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles: http://www.midnightmission.org/event-content/gala/

and this blurb from the Hollywood Times:

The Midnight Mission Honors Carrie Fisher at Golden Heart Awards Gala on September 30th

I mean, they have found a way to do something, swirl a bunch of money around for the sake of homeless.  I volunteered to perform with a group at one of those events in the street outside the Midnight Mission.  Jerry Van Dike was slinging the turkey dinners, while the band played for the homeless folks as they ate.

So, anyway.

While I basically agree with the notion:"Here’s the face of an American “criminal” in 2014. Meanwhile, still not a single bank executive behind bars". Kreiger, like his counterparts in the mainstream media, merely parrots the same story over and over (since there is no journalism, only cut and paste) without actually citing the ordinance that Ft. Lauderdale enacted. Nor does he give any background to the story. The FACT is that Abbott was NOT ARRESTED-- he was given a summons to appear. The FACT is that Abbott informed the media ahead of time that he was going to be arrested, and the media was there egging the police on to arrest him. The FACT is that the feeding was allowed to happen, and THEN he was cited. Did the media witness the "drop the plate " incident? No, it was told by Abbott, a man with a big heart who knew exactly what he was doing (and that quote was repeated over and over in many stories that say basically the same thing-- verbatum), and was setting up the story by leading the media around by the nose (including Kreiger).

The FACT is that the city commission has the discretion to make laws, and the judges have no discretion but to enforce them. The FACT is that no one has a "right" to feed a hundred people on city property. You know what happens after? Those that were fed piss and shit all over the place. Of course Abbott could find indoor facilities in places like church halls, that have sanitary facilities, but prefers to rub all of our noses in the "homeless problem" by doing it publically. Florida is a magnet for the homeless, who are anticipating a freezing winter up north and are coming in droves, and public feeding encourages more (don't feed the bears). Do you want droves of homeless coing to your local public park, or beach, pissing and shitting everywhere?

Here is the Ordinance that was amended by the city in the meeting of Oct. 21 (which is not cited in ANY story about the incident, yet is easy to find.

ORDINANCE - Amending Unified Land Development Regulations, Section 47-18.31

_________________________________________________________________________

Outdoor Food Distribution Center (OFDC). Shall be subject to the following:

i. If a dining area is provided, it shall meet all state, county and city requirements for food service establishments or similar uses.

ii. Shall not be closer than 500 feet from another Food Distribution Center or Outdoor Food Distribution Center.  iii. Shall not be any closer than 500 feet from a residential property as defined in Sec. 47-35 of the ULDR. iv. Shall provide restroom facilities, portable toilets or other similar facilities for persons preparing and serving food as well as for the persons being served food. v. Shall provide equipment and procedures for the lawful disposal of waste and wastewater at the location. vi. Shall provide equipment and procedures at the location for hand washing. vii. Shall provide written consent from the property owner to conduct that activity on the property.  viii. Shall have one person, who will be present at the location at all times that food is being prepared and served, who has received Food Service Manager Certification under Section 509.039, Florida Statutes. ix. Shall have adequate storage of food at a temperature of: a. 41 o F or below or b. 135 o F or above. x. Shall provide transportation of food in a clean conveyance xi. Shall provide service of food within four (4) hours of preparation. xii. Where non-prepackaged food is served, a convenient hand washing  facility for persons preparing and serving the food; which hand  washing facility must at a minimum include: a. A five (5) gallon container with a spigot that provides freeflowingwater and a catch bucket to collect wastewater fromhand washing. b. Soap and individual paper towels. xiii. Any wastewater generated at a location (including, but not limited towastewater from hand washing, utensil washing, sinks, and steam tables) must be placed in a container approved by the director until properly disposed of into a sanitary sewer system or in a manner that is consistent with federal, state, and local regulations and requirements relating to liquid waste disposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The FACT is that there are indoor facilities that easily satisfy these conditions, and Abbott prefers to break the law because he wants to rub our collective nose in the homeless problem.

Our collective noses should be rubbed in the problem. Any nation that can "afford" to spend trillions meddling in foreign affairs, conducting continuous wars, etc... should be able to handle the problem by providing food, shelter, training, and public work for homeless citizens.

I agree with that. However feeding homeless in the park in Ft. Lauderdale does not address that issue. 90% of the homeless are beyond "rehabilitation" are hopelessly addicted to drugs and alcohol, or are just plain social misfits that are resigned to the lives they lead. 10% find help and get back to society-- because they want to. The point is that if it is not legal to open a restaurant w/o permits in the park, then it is not legal to feed a hunfred or more homeless in the park. I'm sure Abbott could find church halls willing to host his "feedings", which are a much more appropriate setting.

I feel bad for the homeless, but "the poor will always be with us". It's just a fact of life as old as the bible.

"Come let us Reason together"

I find it amazing that you actually are quoting law from the current broken system that turns citizens in to prey.  The point that I think may be escaping you is that the role of government is not to feed the poor it is the responsibility of those who can "Love their Neighbor as you love yourself", yes being a human is sometimes messy buisiness but there will be many more who cannot feed themselves in the future and to think that government which sees everyone as a Nail in the midst of a massive hammer in their hands will never work.

The government intends to take Charitable Loving People out of the equation and force the poor only to seek aid from government only.

We are to obey God when the laws become contrary to his commandments.

Acts 5:27-29 - And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!" But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men." [NKJV]

Yeah, let us reason together. Abbott is basically operating a restaurant w/o a license in a public park. Therefore if he is allowed then there is no stopping anyone from setting up tables and a grill in the park and running a "restaurant".

He can do the same thing at a church meeting hall, that has all of the facilities required by the statute, which is not "government", and whose mission it is to do such works. I guarantee that the bleeding hearts here would not want this in their backyard, and also have never lifted a finger to help "the poor".

I'm surprised he wasn't shot by the cop.

Here's another example of our self-serving, lying, corrupt politians passing stupid laws.  In a direct democracy, a referendum would have been held and it would have been the people who would have decided to accept or deny this stupid law.  Representative government is prone to corruption and stupidity.

"Direct Democracy" is tyranny of the majority. The US is (or was) a republic based on a suprema lex Comstitution, defining god given rights, and limits on the power of government, and granting federal, state and local legislatures the power to make laws, as long as they conform to the Constitution.

Direct democracy breaks down when the larger under class finds out they can vote themselves "rights" and benefits (see Venezuela). There is no "right" to feed gangs of homeless in the park, and besides, the locals would never vote yes to feeding gangs of homeless in the park, who then piss and shit on their property.

Get a clue.

25:36  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

25:37  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

25:38  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

25:39  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

A 90 year old veteran setting the example by fighting apathy, thuggery and fascism in his own country!

Well done, sir!

Government trolls and thugs might take this example to rethink their loyalty, obedience and submission to a government of ethically bankrupt parasites and criminals. You will be the pawns they sacrifice when they hide and cower in their bunkers with their oligarch bankster masters. Your allegiance will be privately ridiculed while at the same time noted for making the ultimate sacrifice for not yours, but “their” country.

Edmund Burke comes to mind...

“People crushed by law, have no hopes but from power. If laws are their enemies, they will be enemies to laws; and those who have much to hope and nothing to lose, will always be dangerous.”

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Well, it appears that good men are starting to act! :-)

As to feeding feral cats,,, they kill more songbirds and small game animals in our country than wild critters do.  Don't feed feral cats.

As to feeding the homeless,  do so according to regulations.  My church feed the urban outdoorsman and ladies every morning in our building.  My pastor was attacked and had his throat slit by a homelss guy over 20 years ago and almost bled out... Still feeds them.

As to why don't they work in work camps?  Some choose to be homeless.  No responsibilities.  Drunk when you want.  Fed by the "good hearted" people who are glad it isnlt them.  I use to pick fruit in orchards summers while in high school.  I was tasked to go down to skid row each morning and pick up the homeless and down on their luck to pick fruit and then drop them off in the afternoons.  They were paid on Friday not each day or they wouldn't show up more than one day a week to work.  They were men from all walks of life and myriads of stories.  Ex executives,, ex military,,, ex husbands.  Many reasons in life to say fuck it and throw in the towel.  They were still spending money they earned to get drunk and that in my opinion is an honorable drunk.

I think if we all were realistic we would look around as we reply to this article and have to admit we got it pretty good.  A few twists and turns in our lives the other way and it might be us looking for food this morning.  I picked apples one autumn as a 19 year old to pay my rent as I had been hit and run by a drunk driver and had 6 cracked ribs and lost my meat cutting job.  You can't lift a quarter of beed with cracked ribs,, I tried and passed out.  I do not feed the hopeless out of what I call "success guilt".  I feed the homeless in a building with facilities out of sight because  have compassion.  I have compassion not just for the homeless but for all men and women.

I don't and neither does my pastor feed the homeless to get my name in print or into the media.  We offer 6 to 12 month plans where men can go and quit drinking or drugging if they choose.  Where they can go and learn a trade or skill and work outdoors and develop a vision for their future different from their past.   If you want to ruin a man's vision,,, give him two of them.

I think this vet has good intentions.  We hate speeding tickets but remove all traffic laws and you have India.  Sensationalism and the 30 second sound bite only go so far.

Don't feed the feral cats,,, coyotes have to eat too,,,

great weekend to all

That state is so effed. They charge a 90 year old WW2 vet for feeding the homeless, but reelect an alien who doesn't blink his eyes. Rick the Pleiadian Alien Scott was caught red-handed in a kickback scandal wherein his wife's trusted company Solantic was to receive explicit contracts for mandatory drug-testing people for their state job benefits. These people were to pay out of pocket. NOW, while I don't like welfare milkers, that is and was a conflict of interest.

Having lived in Florida for nearly 13 years, there is very little to like about that state.

Things to like: Weather from December to April, no state income tax, some beautiful nature (that is being destroyed by overbuilding).

Things to dislike: Biting insects, weather from April to December is like living on the Devil's sweaty nutsack, ignorant hayseed-hillbillies that love mud-bogging and have never read a book, immigrant machine gun murders, robberies and home invasions, monsoon like rain, poisonous snakes and alligators, hoards of drugs and drug addict zombies, overzealous good-old-boy pig-cops itching to arrest you for looking at them sideways, material wannabe playboys who are more concerned with how they look than most women are, women who are dumb, ditzy and slutty (wear a condom or catch the HIVVEROUS or herpes), ignorant Neocons (libertarians are hard to come by), bluehairs, shitty pay for work (unless you are in a professional field), awful schools for your kids to be indoctrinated at, and roving packs of christians that will attempt to convert you while you are minding your own business outside of a cafe with headphones on.
