Initial Jobless Claims Beats, 4-Week Average Nears 40-Year Lows
Despite a surge in job cuts, initial jobless claims beat expectations dropping to just 278k (the 2nd lowest of the cycle). The smoother 4-week average dropped to its lowest since April 2000 - nearing levels not seen since 1974... time for moar QE? Continuing claims also dropped to cycle lows... so why did the electorate "throw the bums out" yesterday?

Must be time to whack the snot out of Gold again. Rotten system. Poor miners.
I have the opposite feeling that I will use my CASH to go with. The FED is failing....with your Tax Money and I want Insurance EG. GOLD.
You can follow the Media all you want, check the Employed numbers in a chart for the last 25 years.....Unemployment down......That is reality. Debt is rising and holdin "Gold as Value" is my Insurance.
End the Fed...............Economist's think in's a science.....Sorry. That is not the case it is a study of the past and that has been Manipulated.
This information seems a bit inconsistent with the data on job cuts...
As has been pointed out previously you can not claim unemployment if you lost one of your three jobs. Lots of job losses does not mean you can make a claim. That part time job at Micky Dees just kept you from claiming unemployment.
You cannot become 'unemployed' if you haven't been able to find a job for the past 5 years!
Exit all float scams and buy physical gold. The charade will fail.
It's amazing to see these message boards turn more and more anti zerohedge. Credibility is fading to black. This is the exact sign I need to start believing the near case is near.
*bear case
Initial Claims + Existing Claims + Under Employed + Disability Claims + Jobs taken by millions of illegals = Unemployment at all time highs
Just wait until f-ing 0bola does his amnesty thing for millions more illegal invaders.
Lets hope the House and Senate will squash this through legal means
I'd prefer they deal with him like the Roman Senate dealt with Julius Caeser.
You sound like the Repubicans are working for You. Watch the Repubicans sell out for future votes.
I believe someone posted it last week but when you lose one of these new recovery jobs you aren't eligible for unemployment so you aren't counted and your recovery job was paying so little you were already on food stamps.
Exactly, you lose a part time minimum wage job and you aren't eligible for unemployment. Also if you work three part time jobs and lose one, you aren't eligible.
Any data point that can move the market higher is pure manipulated BS. Any data point that is real is ignored and reported as inconsequential.
Whose fault is that exactly?? Watching TV, smoking weed after work doesn't increase ones marketability... If one is working at a job that they are getting paid 'so little' then they have to look in the mirror and take responsibility first

The loss of a part-time minimum wage "recovery" job is also allied with the fact you can't make your initial unemployment claim the day you're laid off.
The last time it happened to me (4 years ago), I had to wait for my severance to end. Depending on how severance is provided (mine was weekly), you can either wait up to a week or multiple weeks. My 2 months meant I didn't file until long after I was laid off.
I know you can file immediately and say you're receiving severance, which means the gov't doesn't pay out. But who really does that? I sure didn't and neither did any of my co-workers who joined me on the unemployment rolls.
I expect to see a jump in a few weeks.
The status of "unemployed from a real officially-recognized salary-paying JOB and eligible to actually MAKE a claim" is getting harder and harder to meet.
How many people actually meet this definition anymore when so many of us are self-employed, self-unemployed, part-time, retired forcibly, "not in labour force", "not actively seeking work", not earning enough to "make a claim", working under 30 hours a week, paid in cash, trying to make a go of it selling online or some such...?
The whole statistic of "initial claims" is a manipulated FARCE.
self-unemployed, part-time, retired forcibly, "not in labour force", "not actively seeking work", not earning enough to "make a claim", working under 30 hours a week, paid in cash, trying to make a go of it selling online or some such...
Exactly how does the above allow one to earn income to pay rent which in many places is now close to $2,000 a month for a 700 Square ft one bedroom apartment utilities and parking NOT included??
Self unemployed, not in labor force, not actively seeking work = permanently unemployable after a period of time. If you an adult and don't have an upwardly mobile career trajectory you are pretty much SOL in the new economy of the 21st century. Anyone with 1/2 a brain would know that.
