BLSOD

Tyler Durden's picture

Friday gave us a rare glimpse inside one of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Jobs Centers (courtesy of CNBC)... Perhaps, as the following screengrab indicates, this is why the American unemployed's "re-training" is not preparing them for life in the new economy?

In the new normal, the ubiquitous BSOD is officially to be renamed the BLSOD...

How much did the Obamacare website cost again?

Windows will be around for a long time folks... and it is the most secure O/S on the market.

I have nothing against Windows, afterall, stupid people need computers too and Windows caters to that market.

I really like how when you click to shut down Windows it sometime sits there for 15 minutes running updates. How quaint.

I also like how the GUI has such a 1990's feel to it... or that Windows 8.1 seems to have been copied from the Hospital scene in "Idiocracy"... But then, that is what Microsoft is really about.

I also like how Bill Gates is so into infectious African diseases and supports UN population control, er, sorry, vaccination for those poor countries

While the *nix like OSes are transparent in their adoption of safety features, there is a tremendous amount of time invested in building commercial software in the Microsofts platforms. There is too much expertise accumulated.

Sun, 11/09/2014 - 19:15 | 5430545 bh2
bh2's picture

Actually, there's probably far greater "expertese" (both in skill level and manhours) invested in *NIX development. Windows has contributed little innovation to the computing world, M$ being accurately described as no more than "fast followers".

Their expertise is in marketing and litigation -- not technology.

Mon, 11/10/2014 - 05:22 | 5431623 css1971
css1971's picture

Microsoft requires you to throw all expertise out of the window every 3 years and relearn from scratch. The result being you can't build a great deal of expertise because you are relearning the basics of the new environment. And making the same types of mistakes again.

Unix on the other hand, people who started on the original unix in 1970 would be comfortable and productive on Linux today. Their expertise would still be relevant but would have the benefit of 40 years of experience.

Point being, on Microsoft platforms you are continually re-inventing wheels, while on unix platforms, someone already did that and you get to invent the wing (or whatever) instead.

The perfect OS will never exist.

My first exposure to computing was punch card stuff in 1969.

Remember Z80 and the BBC computer.

Owned an Atari with 128K !!!! of RAM back in the 80s and an Apple 2

I have 2 Macs that are both set up with Mac OS, Windows and Ubuntu as a triple boot.

I mostly run Mac, as that's been what I've had since 1994.

Most people aren't propellerheads, so they go for the cheap and easy - Linux has the price end covered and is getting better fairly quickly on the latter. Unfortunately, the advertising budget is a bit lacking.

Ewww, Perl is horrible stuff - it made more sense when you needed to write powerful, compact scripts to get things done with weak processors, less memory and less disk. Sort of a grown up version of TECO... now that was a macho language. I still suspect the neurons of my fondest memories of my mother when I was a baby ended up overwritten by TECO command syntax details I had to learn under deadline pressure.

Perl, (and TECO) are great examples around of "write-only" code, in other words, after you write it and and get it to work, two months later when you have to change it and read what you wrote, it will look like gibberish and not make sense!

Python is so much better and will save you a lot of time in maintenance.

...or dweebs who have to work for a living maintaining hundreds of machines at a time over the network.

The problem with GUIs is that they are one dimensional and don't really take the network into account. A waste of time and gives way too much control to the GUI, so you don't really know what its doing.

What you "learn" with GUIs isn't that "this command runs on this machines, then this command, then this one", rather you learn "click this tab, then enter this string, then click this tab and click this button" - now which of those is more useful information to know, given that on the next version of the GUI the order of the tabs may be rearranged, even if the underlying command line scripts are not?

Government, being nothing more than a criminal syndicate of theft and violence, always produces the opposite of the stated goal. Always.

This is because the stated goal is nothing more than an excuse, a lie, for additional theft and treason.

Therefore: "Jobs Centers" are nothing more than theft-holes for pols, crats, and their "favored" contractors, to enrich themselves with. Their "clients" were previously created by prior scams, and thefts, by other pols, crats, and "favored" contractors, and are nothing but convenient pawns.

The unemployed are screwed. We are coming face to face with a harsh reality. The long term implications of poor job creation are massive. We are seeing that a huge number of people have dropped out of the work force. Often these people have little in the way of savings, this means the burden of caring for them will be transferred to society. If to many people shift into this category we will slowly wear down through attrition.

Finding a fair way to share and balance the work load that goes on every day is one of the most important problems facing our modern world. Failure to discover a solution to this dilemma bodes poorly for our consumer driven economy and adds to the toxic problem of inequality. Many of the numbers and budget projections of the government have been based on far better employment numbers then we are currently facing or will be facing if this continues. The article below looks at the long-term implication of poor job creation and how it will drastically impact in a negative way both the wealth and future of America.

Why do we have to 'put people to work'? I must say, I am amused by the total denial of reality in the idea that everyone should be working full-time in an economy that is automating. The obvious conclusion to draw is that people should be working LESS. FEWER hours. As to compensation, well that is up to society to figure out...maybe society should have asked this question BEFORE leaping into automated manufacturing.
But it is what it is. The huge jump in productivity caused by the tech revolution has allowed a few to do the work of many. So companies either pay a bunch of people to sit around and do nothing, or they let them go. Of course they chose the latter.
So now we have declining wage/hours overall, and a growing army of idle folks. Neither of whom can afford to 'spend' this economy back to growth. But all the items actually NEEDED are already being made by those few still working, so where is the economy to GROW?

Face it folks...if you WANT this kind of economy, you're going to HAVE to pay a bunch of people NOT to work. You're going to have to get over your Calvinist notions of 'work/eat' and face the reality of your situation. And guess what? The economy DOESN'T CARE. It HAS no morality, no notions of the 'hazard' of rewarding idleness. It only cares that the cold equations be balanced. It is AMORAL, and in the absence of guidance will seek the easiest route towards its goal.

And the economy WILL toss the board, scatter the pieces, and walk away from the table for awhile. Many, many human economies have learned this to their sorrow.

Yours was the only reply worth reading on this article.

To me, having people working shit dead end jobs is immoral.  Laziness has more morality to it than most of the anti-human garbage that we have to go through in the authoritarian corporate world.

You talk about the economy as if it is something else. I am the economy.

Your solution simply guarantees collapse as the parasite kills the host. I stop working and join the ranks of the money for nothing people.

Thank you Bemused Observer!

I have taken the liberty to print it out and have a few copies with me in my wallet, even translated into another language, to hand out whenever that subject comes up.

Hope that is alright with you.

Gentlemen,

For novelty's sake, here's a BSOD Screensaver from M$FT.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897558.aspx

You can relive your frustrations as the screen "blues out" when you're not hammeing away at your keyboards.

I'm looking for a "Dr. Watson" Screensaver myself, from all the times my Windoze sessions would crash mid development...
