Iran Unleashes Reverse-Engineered US Drone In First Test Flight

Tyler Durden's picture

Almost three years ago, Iran reportedly downed a US drone. The RQ-170 Sentinel recon drone that was reportedly captured has apparently been reverse-engineered, and now, as Reuters reports, Iran state news agency IRNA reports the drone-clone has taken its first flight. Iran's Supreme Leader noted, "Today is a very sweet and unforgettable day for me." Of course, this 'news' should be taken with a modest pinch of salt but, as with everything in foreign policy these days, Brigadier General Ali Hajizadeh states that "a film of the flight will be released soon."

The clip of the downed drone from 2011...

and in 2013, Iran managed to hack some of the footage from the captured drone...

And today, Reuters reports,

An Iranian copy of a U.S. reconnaissance drone captured in 2011 has taken its first flight, state news agency IRNA reported on Monday.

In December 2011, Iran said it had captured a U.S. RQ-170 Sentinel reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran that had been reported lost by U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

"We promised that a model of RQ-170 would fly in the second half of the year, and this has happened," Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told IRNA. "A film of the flight will be released soon."

In a video posted by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei voiced satisfaction at the news after seeing a replica of the drone, saying: "Today is a very sweet and unforgettable day for me."

*  *  *

So ISIS has fighter jets and Iran has drones... and the US is doubling its troops in the region... yep, seems like a good reason to buy more stocks.

Hezbollah has posted several videos of them using drone fired missiles. A great sign..

As for the bullshit zerohedge seems to continue to have to spew about ISIS having an air force - the planes in question were apparently brought in from Iraq ( by iraqi pilots - makes perfect sense ) and at least 2 of the 3 have been destroyed.

As I said before, anyone with a brain who thinks ISIS can develop and airforce on the fly in a war zone where they have no air power and little air defense wither needs to be committed, or hired at SITE intelligence.

Compare to photos from the Malaysian airliner in Ukraine. And Pentagon is even more obvious. Probably not only plaster and paint but also trasnmitters to better guide those incoming things.

There were stories of drones' video feed captured by insurgents via US$26 software in Iraq. This one is supposedly a spy drone meaning advanced encryption protocols etc., I suppose drone spying program of CIA was followed long enough without CIA knowledge to allow for such seamless hijacking of the drone. Supposedly, drone's uplink was jammed and false GPS coordinates were fed to the machine so when it followed standard procedure of returning to homebase it actually landed on airstrip in Iran instead of Bagram or whatever. Believable enough, however I do not expect Iranians to develop such expertise without outside help.

If Amazon can make drones, Iran certainly can. Be prepared for the release of Iranian 'terrorist' drones in the US, under control by various organizations. But we won't have anything to worry about because 'US drones' certainly do not attack innocent civilians, nor do they target specific individual leaders. So as long as YOU are not in one of those two categories, you should be safe!

I expect to see a 'terrorist drone' attack in the US sometime in the future. It does create the interesting situation where a suicide drone could be used - and make us wonder if 47 'virgin drones' are waiting for it.

Credit them for getting this done.  Why did they need to copy to build their own?  If Russia really is a supporter then Russia should have given them the technology long ago,  Iran should have had a fleet of drones by now.

These large drones are one catagory but if a target is known - smaller, cheaper drones that can be flown directly there and back without circlling for a target for hours would be useful.  Even small drones that are flown into the target.  US bases, outposts and convoys would seem to be targets   Small locally flown drones, just big enough to carry a suitable payload could be effective against vehicle patrols.

Not sure why it has taken so long to get into the drone business as they seem to be a useful weapon against the bulky US military.  And again, why has Russia not helped Iran or sold Russian drones to Iran and Syria.  (Same reason Putin backed out of his agreement to sell Russia's latest anti air craft missile systems to Iran and Syria.)

Iran has lots of other drones that they have been developing (and using / distributing to their allies), it's just that in this case they not only managed to take an American drone out of their skies undamaged, but also then managed to replicate it completely (with improvements I'm sure).

The key thing about this drone is that it is a STEALTH design, although in truth those 'stealth' technologies tend to be way over-hyped, especially now that radar technology has become so advanced (ex: Iran had no trouble picking the original out of their skies...)

In any case, it's good for them, and bad for satanic Amerikkka/Israel/Europe!

The Iranians are very backward, technologically. And in practically every other respect.

Islam is a bit of a hindrance when you are studying something that takes a great deal of focus to master. Imagine trying to study fluid dynamics and having to break concentration every couple of hours so you can kneel on a mat facing East, thinking about God. Mathematics is the foundation of modern science and all the mathemeticians I know spent a long time cloistered with their books for days on end getting their heads around the concepts. Unless you're a genius, I suspect it's impossible to be a mathematician with a decent grasp of modern maths and a devout Muslim.

Muslim sciences flourished and led the world until, what, the 13th c? Since then all their progress appears to have coat-tailed the West's.

So this is how technology transfer happens these days. I think that the same people who get designers, engineers, etc. in one country to work on classified projects later sell that technology to some or all bidders. That's precisely the point of classifying information secret, isn't it? It creates an artificial scarcity and monopoly and some higher ups who have access to this information are in the best position to exploit this for their own personal benefit. The lower level engineers get neither the full deserved profit or credit for their work. I'm just speculating, but it sounds like a nice scam. Anyone here know if I've gotten it right?
