Obamacare Architect Apologizes For Calling Americans "Stupid"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having exposed the arrogance and self-admitted deception that was used to get the healthcare law past the "stupidity of American voters," it seems ObamaCare architect Jonathan Gruber regrets his comments... As The Daily Caller reports, during an interview with MSNBC, Gruber explained he "was speaking off the cuff and basically spoke inappropriately," adding, "I regret having made those comments."

Via The Daily Caller,

Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber said Tuesday that he regrets saying that aspects of Obamacare needed to be concealed from the public due to the “stupidity of the American voter.”

“Do you stand by the comments in that video?,” MSNBC host Ronan Farrow asked Gruber, referring to a video of Gruber explaining how a lack of transparency helped Obamacare pass into law.

The comments in the video were made at an academic conference,” Gruber said. “I was speaking off the cuff and I basically spoke inappropriately and I regret having made those comments.”

Farrow then argued on Gruber’s behalf that Gruber’s argument was more “nuanced” than people can even appreciate.

Of course, what else would MSNBC do? Starts at around 31 seconds... (Gruber comments start at 1:20)

We suspect what he means is "I regret being caught saying those comments."

“Government attracts mediocre, low IQ, power hungry, narrow minded, paper pushing, rules oriented, dimwits who think they can run your life better than yourself.” – Jim Quinn

Gruber is one of these.

This was law 1 of the Obama administration.  This was them getting started.  With this "confession" out in public, can we re-examine all of the other shit.  Intentional lack of response to fix oil spill, IRS, Fast and Furious, NSA, ...

I know Gruber personally (health economist by trade myself and been on a panel with him at Academy Health) and his work is quite sound from a health econ standpoint.  Technically, he is right about the American public on the whole too and you could use a ton of basic statistics regarding education level, basic literary, math skills, people who play the lottery at least once a month, etc.  Political science has it down ot a knack now and nows exactly who will vote how and what looks like on a precinct by precinct question.  The only thing that is question mark is who will actually vote especiallly in primaries.

Comments in this thread just prove that point.  Instead of talking about what alternatives have been posed by the right to Obamcare including the AEI proposal last year or the recent Hatch alternative you get a ton of comments on here about Jew-this and advocating violence.

You are right, the lack of even basic understanding of health care economics is absurd. This is one of the subjects where libertarian philosophy is lacking( a real world, how would you implement it, comprehensive discussion) this STUPID ranting just marginalizes more sound libertarian principles and sets up a nice strawman caricature, way to go ZHers

Why would anyone want to have a "discussion" with people that openly admit that deceit is a prudent negotiating tactic?  That basically kills any further business right there.  Maybe deceit is the only way the marxist agenda can be advanced.  The leftist premise that it's morally justifiable to confiscate an individual's property through force, so that certain political allies can then reap the rewards, doesn't hold water. That's why they lie.  That's why there shouldn't be any discussion.  Why do the marxist continue to think their ideas work when all they have done is brought destruction wherever it has been tried?

What he actually said was the american people are too stupid to understand that socialized medicine is what's best for them so we had to make the law purposefully complicated and lack of transparency(i.e.; lying to them) was the only way they would accept it.

He proves that the majority of american people are not stupid.  just the liberal, democrat, socialist, progressives voters who bought hook, line and sinker the biggest lie they've ever been told next to santa claus is real.

Wait till this fucknut finds out that some people have a pre-existing condition to re-enact the knockout game to people who lie to them.

Die you motherfucker!  Kill yourself!  DO IT!!!

Ladies and gentleman:

- Gruber's Example 2,305,321 of why he is basically right.  Ranting idiocy filled with nothing about buzzwords, no substance, and advocating violence.

MeBizarro,

WOW, these guys just gave a nice  explanation of an alternative to our healthcare system. It is refreshing to hear them in their own words articulate FOX news coverage. The intelligence and discussion of the conservatives here on ZH regarding healthcare policy is way above my expectations, I did not expect near so much from this crowd.

As much as I adhere to a libertarian perspective on a lot of subjects, this one is a major Achilles Heel, which may be why all the emotional responses, the whole cognitive dissonance thing, a belief system that does not cut it in the real world, the best they can up with is some flash card buzz words that degenerates rapidly from there. Libertarian-esque blogs have done a poor job in my view on this.

I am sure that he is sorry if anyone is offended by him calling them stupid.

The Hollywood apology has become the Washington apology.

Isn't it always black on black crime that is the worst?

Emanuel bluntly admits that the cuts will not be pain-free. "Vague promises of savings from cutting waste, enhancing prevention and wellness, installing electronic medical records and improving quality are merely 'lipstick' cost control, more for show and public relations than for true change," he wrote last year (Health Affairs Feb. 27, 2008).

Savings, he writes, will require changing how doctors think about their patients: Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath too seriously, "as an imperative to do everything for the patient regardless of the cost or effects on others" (Journal of the American Medical Association, June 18, 2008).

Yes, that's what patientswant their doctors to do. But Emanuel wants doctors to look beyond the needs of their patients and consider social justice, such as whether the money could be better spent on somebody else.

Because Emanuel isn't a BS and he's is right.  At the end of the day, somebody has to ration healthcare because it is a good.  Either it is the gov't, the private sector, or the individual.  For people under 65 in the US, it is left up to the individual and hundreds of thousands a year due to a lack of coverage/inadequate coverage they exhaust.

Your the kind of person who screams bloody murder about 'socialized medicine/population health' yet then screams bloody murder when the private insurer denies an experimental form of care that is incredibly expensive and the patient can't afford.  Typical American attitude regaridng healthcare.

Gruber should be charged with murder.. I have read several stories of senior citizens who were refused care & died bc of Obamacare = Death by Democrat. This shit needs to stop & stop now. Will one of our family members be next? We need to really keep the pressure on this asshole & the entire corrupt administration.

Angus King tells Fox & Friends: ‘Don’t lecture me’

http://bangordailynews.com/2014/11/12/politics/angus-king-tells-fox-frie...

Maine Sen. Angus King didn’t make any new friends when he visited with Fox & Friends on Tuesday. In a tense exchange over the Affordable Care Act, King took exception to hosts’ description of MIT professor Jonathan Gruber’s comments on the lack of transparency in the bill. Gruber was a key figure in helping to draft the bill.

Here’s a transcript from Mark Finkelstein at Newsbusters:

BRIAN KILMEADE: Senator, you were not in the Senate when they voted on Obamacare. And I wonder would you have voted on then and especially would you vote on now after you hear this. One of the architects, Jonathan Gruber, was caught on camera saying this at the University of Pennsylvania. And I put in brackets, the stupidity of the American voter. Let’s listen.

[Plays Gruber's comments]

KILMEADE: So he’s basically saying that he didn’t tell the truth when the law was passed; neither did Democrats when they put it forward. Your reaction to that? Are you as outraged as most of America?

ANGUS KING: Well, he shouldn’t, I don’t know what he was talking about. I certainly don’t endorse those kind of comments. But I can recall that debate. I wasn’t in office, but it was a very vigorous debate. Everybody knew that there were going to be additional taxes required to support the premiums under the Affordable Care Act. I don’t see it as any deep dark conspiracy. There were all kinds of – ...
