China’s Military Budget Could Soon Be As Big as America’s
Frank Kendall – the Pentagon’s undersecretary of defense for acquisitions, technology, and logistics – has repeatedly warned that America’s military advantage over China is evaporating.
The Weekly Standard reports:
While the U.S. military’s budget is being cut, China’s budget has been growing at about 12 percent annually, Kendall said, and may soon be as large as the U.S.’s. China is of particular concern according to the under secretary because “no one’s studied us more — including immediately after the first Gulf War — than the Chinese. And they have been building systems since then designed to counteract some of the things that we have.”
Last month, the Washington Free Beacon reported on a draft of the annual report of the congressional, bipartisan U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission which found:
China’s rapid military modernization is altering the military balance of power in the Asia Pacific in ways that could engender destabilizing security competition between other major nearby countries, such as Japan and India, and exacerbate regional hotspots such as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea.
And Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel noted in August:
China and Russia have been trying to close the technology gap by pursuing and funding long-term, comprehensive military modernization programs.
***
They are also developing anti-ship, anti-air, counter-space, cyber, electronic warfare and special operations capabilities that appear designed to counter traditional U.S. military advantages.
(The defense contractors are of course saying that we need to increase military spending. But America's military would be much further ahead if we hadn't squandered trillions of dollars on staggering idiocy, pursued a foreign policy which has weakened our national security, and allowed rampant and unchecked fraud to plunge our economy into disarming levels of debt.)
Offensive … Or Defensive?
I was born and raised in the U.S., and lived here all my life. So America’s national security is my number one concern.
And as an American, I simply don’t want any other country to match U.S. military superiority. I want “my team” to be top dog.
But blaming China for being bellicose and militaristic may be a little one-sided. From another perspective, China is just acting defensively.
For example, historians say that declining empires tend to attack their rising rivals … so the risk of world war is rising because the U.S. feels threatened by the rising empire of China.
Indeed, the U.S. government considers economic rivalry to be a basis for war. And (according to one measure) China’s economy is already bigger than America’s.
The U.S. is in fact systematically using its military to contain China’s growing economic influence.
We warned in 2012 that the U.S. had re-started the Cold War with Russia. Indeed, the U.S. has been encircling Russia for decades, and may be attempting to carry out regime change in that country. China may not sit idly by while Russia – its close ally and economic partner – is challenged.
China has also warned against an attack on Iran. This is relevant because the U.S. made the decision to threaten to bomb Iran before 9/11, has been actively planning regime change in Iran for 20 years, and actually carried out regime change 60 years ago.
Indeed, the U.S. may be attempting to carry out regime change in China itself.
In addition, we’re in the middle of a currency war, and China is eroding the dollar’s status as world reserve currency. Currency wars often lead to shooting wars.
And numerous top financial experts warn that the U.S. may launch World War 3 to distract the public from our failing economy.
So while China’s military build-up is troubling, it’s not entirely surprising.

The one thing China needs is a better navy. While some have bashed the navy and aircraft carriers as obsolete -- then why is the US building two new super carriers, and the Chinese doing the same?
China is the world's largest importer and exporter -- and a LOT of the raw materials and finsihed products move BY SHIP.
Any war (besides a ground war in Asia) would be impossble for China to fight without a navy.
Yup, a sub could launch a missile and sink a carrier -- but how are you going to hunt subs that are chasing your merchant and supply ships without a carrier group?
And how are you going to 'invade' another country in a far off land if you do not have carrier based aircraft to counter their land based aircraft?
And how are you going to launch your cruise missiles if not from destroyers and cruisers? Or are you going to leave them unprotected from airstrikes?
China knows it needs a modern navy, and it is building one. It needs modern aircraft and is building those (they just announced a NEW stealth fighter is being built!)
China can now win any war fought in China, or Korea, or southern Russia. It cannot take the Phillipines without a navy, it cannot threaten Hawaii without a navy, and it cannot interfere in the Middle East or Africa without a navy.
This won't happen until sometime in Obama's third consecutive term...
and America's dollar could soon be as big as Zimbabweans
China had already been creating more "money" out of nothing for a while. China has "learned" from the Western powers enough to now be surpassing those Western powers in the degree of social insanities!
All this is simple. The global reserve currency becomes global policeman. China is now it. Long Chinese defense stocks.
China and America are allies people. Senior politicians forwarded the wealth East and are personally vested.
No one is going to fuck with a couple trillion of trade per year. If the Russians get to uppity who do you think China will side with? 30 trillion trade bloc of Europe and America or $2 trillion Russia?
So the doode at the pentagon who has the job of spending money on weapons wants to spend moar money on weapons... Swell newz georgie.
I upvoted you.
Relevant: In the 1970s Cheney and Rumsfeld were
instrumental in generating fake intelligence exaggerating the Soviet
threat in order to undermine coexistence between the U.S. and Soviet
Union, which conveniently justified huge amounts of cold war spending (and see this)
Oh hell, just fuck me running! The sky is falling, let's play whipout to stop the evil yeller horde from devouring us roundeyes and send moar loot to our savior from hobgoblins, our own MIC.
I've seen this play before, the only losers are American taxpayers.
Beware of Foreign Entanglements. The Real George Washington.
Upvoted you. I've written alot about that ...
For example:
The Founding Fathers warned against standing armies and foreign entanglements, saying that overgrown military establishments destroy our liberty, and given that economists such as Nobel prize winner Joe Stiglitz have demonstrated that large military budgets and war destroy our economy, and make the American people poor ...
China stated clearly after SandyHook Americans should be disarmed.
So George wants the US to be "Number One". Crap!! The US has to be strong enough to defend itself and deter rational aggression...(irrational agression can never be deterred no matter what). The Military Industrial Complex has spread worldwide and costs everyone tons of money that could/should be spent elsewhere.
Upvoted you. Written alot saying the same thing...
americans dit idly by and make excuses instead of progress. this is a breeding ground for disaster.

Speaking of "national security," some here might know what Herman Kahn's* "MAD," mutual assured destruction, is. If you don't, you should look it up.
If one wanted to nuke, say, Russia, China, and/or their allies, like Iran, how could one possibly get around the mutually assured destruction risk? Have a lackey nation nuke them for you and then also have them take the retaliatory strike as well. Call it "MOD," mutual others destruction.
In the past year, year and half, there have been numerous sackings in the DC US' nuke command, and the top two command replacements are Ashkenazi (crypto and dually).

An American, not US subject.
Yeah, but my tinfoil hat is gold lined.
Another interesting point to ponder is, that the DC US borrows most of its non-discretionary budget, and China buys a lot of the resulting FedRes bonds.
An American, not US subject.
Greater Israel owns the DC US and is slowly selling it, us, to the Chinese, as evidenced at the Bundy ranch treason.
The only thing China lacks so far is a serious navy, but with the money they have now, it's probably on its way. I have friends in the military who tell me we probably couldn't fight two ground wars at once, and North Korea could probably kick our ass in a conventional ground war with the shape we're in now. Pres Golfstix has been obsessed with firing all our competent commanders. So the option is nuclear? That is not an option, our competitors are as well stocked as we are, and nobody wins a nuclear war. We would be crippled for over century just getting six or so good hits here. With hundreds of warheads aimed our way, just six is optimistic. Why doesn't our leadership just do their jobs? Is it that painful to run a country the right way under the rule of law?
China does not need much of a navy. Thay are a land power and with Russia they control Zbiggie's "Global Island". They've got all they need.
Dear Maltese Falcon:
"China does not need much of a navy. Thay are a land power and with Russia they control Zbiggie's 'Global Island.' They've got all they need."
Yes, but from their point of view, it useful to be able to project power so as to be able to counter-encircle.
A few silent subs loaded with nukes should do it. Surface ships are a waste of $$.
The war drums sure are pounding hard re China. They are a long, long way from par with the US from a military perspective. 10-12 aircraft carrier groups vs one second hand carrier? Yep time to get alarmed and scream they're coming for us. America has always seen an enemy behind every tree and the masses love it. Americans live with the constant drone of danger everywhere. As far as caring about the death of troops, I don't see America overly alarmed about ours. Using soldiers as bait to kill Vietcong with artillery was common. Advancing Time has been watching too much TV. The stories of sending troops to battle with inferior/defective equipment are legion. The reason we use drones is it makes war far more acceptable to Americans and not as a way to minimize combat deaths. I stopped buying the myth of America long ago.
I figure we're just a paranoid people that can't stand anyone else on the block so we ramble around the planet like some out of control, belligerant drunk. Few weeks ago, it was Russia, then ISIS, today it's China and next week/month, it will be someone else. Actually, we're arming our police force against an invading public so guess we've got ourselves on the block as well. As an old man, this will be going on long after me so you young folks (folksy, huh?) can carry on. Paying for it all of course.
Carriers nowadays are as much use as battleships at Midway.
The remergence of the Silk road, and Russian land trade. makes them even more obsolete.
Another malinvestment fighting the last war.
Carrieres are powerful and effectibe for controlling and destroying non nuclear third world countries. Which is what they have been mainly used for.
They are useful for intimidating China and Russia too, as a dare or a kind of tripwire, so long as they are convinced our Overlords are crazy enough to start a global war. Carriers are good for playing chicken with the survival of the species; if they care too much they lose. Dr. Strangelove is alive and well!
We, the people of the US, really need to take care of these criminal psychopaths before it's too late.
Two or three Sunburn cruise missles launched from a sub would make quick work of a carrier though.
And how would you 'hunt' subs if not from an aircraft carrier?
If you use violence against other people, you can expect to have violence used against you.; You can expect to become a victim of whatever means you use to get what you want.
Normally, I enjoy articles by George, but I don't understand all this "have the best military in the world." Do they REALLY think China or Russia is going to invade us or something?
If you want a strong defense, arm and train citizens to use assault rifles which will, in essence, be a 300 million person army. As Japanese General Isoroku Yamamoto aid "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." That’s your protection, that’s your defense. Or as Ron Paul said, there is a difference between defense spending and military spending. And yet Obama states 'you don't own that blade of grass' and wants to neuter the US into oblivion with gun control BS. He is going to further euthanize any growth prospects for the US with his upcoming EO blitzkrieg.
We should worry less about China/Russia and worry about the Progressive Fascist monster of der Fuhrer Obama and for that matter the IMF. You all should keep an eye on the self-appointed powers they are starting to wield.
You miss the obvious-- what if Obama is working as a Chinese agent? We know he's working for somebody, and that somebody has an obvious anti-American agenda.
As far as the Chinese invading-- at the current rate that America is being weakened and demoralized, the federal government could collapse within 20 years, at which point the Chinese could simply walk in and start chipping away.
The nation-state of America doesn't have a military.
Funny any American could have an issue with China spending more on their military. So your country can do it but another country can't? Fuck you and your hypocrisy. Not implying the post writer but rather a general comment. I also like how Americans always act like everyone is trying to blow them up as well when last I checked the U.S is the most aggressive country in modern history. If the U.S ever gets aggression their way then they will have clearly deserved it. It's like the bully in school who finally gets people fed up with their bullshit and victims retaliate and then he/she cries about it acting like they haven't been an evil bastard. You reap what you sow...
Oh and nice to see Washington's Blog yet again brings up the events of Sept 11, 2001. Stunned if they can go 3 posts without mentioning that.
A interesting fact is China will let ten thousand of their army be killed for the greater good and would not care, this makes them very dangerous. Too many people it appears a struggle is occurring to unseat America as the worlds most dominate nation. For many proud Americans who see the United States as having a right to be in control it is both threatening and frustrating to see that control slip away.
It is threatening to think the country might quickly fall to the position of a second rate power mired in debt with many of the options we have come to see as our right suddenly ripped away. It is frustrating that in many ways America appears to have become its own worse enemy guilty of political inaction and squandering its power through a series of bad choices and missteps. More in the article below about the continuing massive shift in power to Asia and how America must immediately face its problems to set its house in order.
http://brucewilds.blogspot.com/2014/06/americas-struggle-to-stay-on-top.html
I can think of nothing better than America having to face a world where they are no longer the leader. The folks in DC might have to actually use diplomacy, earn respect, and work out mutually beneficial deals with their neighbors and partners. Act like a civilized country for once and maybe even, just maybe, act in the interests of its people. What a thought!
From Ghost Cities to Ghost Navies
HAHAHA Pentagon.
They shipped our jobs over seas....
now you care about Chinese catching up?
GET A CLUE.
You deserve to LOSE.
Many Americans cringe when they think about the billions of dollars of consumer goods we import from China every month, but what makes it even more bizarre is that China is an American make product. Decades ago America started down a perilous path to build China into a world power.
Decades ago a pathological fear of Russia and the Kremlin’s atheism caused America to seek a counter balance in the region. Central to the American effort was offering the prospect of economic incentives to China, we combined this with a hardline military response to communist aggression. Ironically, it was the China’s communist longevity the Washington wise men should have feared more. The article below delves into how and why America made China into the economic giant it is today.
http://brucewilds.blogspot.com/2012/09/china-made-by-america.html
And this one you can blame a Bush. HW.
Actually it was Clinton who did all the heavy lifting. It's a badly- kept secret that the Chinese owned Clinton and Gore.
The moment China feels that Russia is weak enough they will pounce to reclaim territory stolen by the Soviets when China was weak. Who gives a flying fig about gas deals when you can take all the gas you like. Russia has much much more to worry about than NATO.
Maybe. But only AFTER they have dealt with the USA.
Why would they do that? It would be a foolish move to do so first, quite possibly afterwards but never before. A large armed force is an umweildly beast that has a much greater chance of success if you don't have to take it too far.
This is the same stupid argument used when the Russian Bear was inflated by the... Pentagon.
The bomber crisis. The bomb crisis. The missile crisis. All fabricated.
Here we go again.
Yeah.. stupid argument..
"USA!! USA!! USA!!"

If we want to contain China...quit buying their crap! Hell, we made them what they are today.
The degenerates in Washington are not very good with the unintended consequences of their dumb polices – this includes all their stupid wars. It was their infatuation with globalisation that shifted the productive capacity of the US economy to China so US banks and corporations could make a few cents in the Dollar more profit. In 1984 the trade deficit with China did not register and now it is runs into the hundreds of billions. They created the new superpower. At some point fiat currencies will collapse and we will have a gold backed standard....then the US will have to bring the gold it claims it has to the table. Maybe that is the point when they kill us all.

Dear God where do these inbreeds come from? Just die off already!

Let me translate: "I believed all their lies when I was younger and in indoctrination school. I now have a stake in their lies and treason, so I'm now a promoter, a "useful idiot," of their lies and treason."
An American, not US subject.
We are already outgunned.
The next war will be cyber and economic. They can dump their treasuries at any time and we are quickly getting to the end of our leash in our ability to protect the petrol dollar.
They are signing deals all over the world to bypass the dollar :-( Canada recently....
We are not well off on the cyber front either. You need engineers and techs to wage cyber war, right? A good Chinese EE gets about $20K/yr American.
They get about 6X the technical support for the same dollar using Chinese nationals. (They currently have 100 million high school graduates and 20 Million engineers.)
Their ability to wage cyber war is about 5-7 times ours for the same money -- we are screwed and out gunned on the financial and technical front.
Where did I put that white flag?
