Chairman Of Joint Chiefs Tells Congress Considering Boots-On-The-Ground In Iraq

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite President Obama's "promise" that there would be no combat troop boots-on-the-ground in the fight against ISIS in Iraq (and his doubling of 'military advisor' troop levels last week), The Guardian reports that General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, indicated to the House of Representatives armed services committee that the strength of ISIS relative to the Iraqi army may be such that he would recommend abandoning Obama’s oft-repeated pledge against returning US ground troops to combat in Iraq. Dempsey added, rather uncomfortably, that "we're going to need about 80,000 competent Iraqi security forces to recapture territory lost, and eventually the city of Mosul, to restore the border." The irony of this is that the 'not-dead' leader of ISIS al-Baghdadi spoke today and exclaimed that the US will be soon compelled to come on the ground to fight his group.

As The Guardian reports,

General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, indicated to the House of Representatives armed services committee that the strength of Isis relative to the Iraqi army may be such that he would recommend abandoning Obama’s oft-repeated pledge against returning US ground troops to combat in Iraq.

Retaking the critical city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest, and re-establishing the border between Iraq and Syria that Isis has erased “will be fairly complex terrain” for the Iraqi security forces that the US is once again supporting.

“I’m not predicting at this point that I would recommend that those forces in Mosul and along the border would need to be accompanied by US forces, but we’re certainly considering it,” Dempsey said.

And, as The Daily Star adds,

Iraq will need about 80,000 effective military troops to retake the terrain it lost to Islamic State militants and restore its border with Syria, the top U.S. general said on Thursday.

"We're going to need about 80,000 competent Iraqi security forces to recapture territory lost, and eventually the city of Mosul, to restore the border," Army General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, told a congressional hearing.

*  *  *

The Pentagon Press Secretary was rapidly on the case to back-pedal...

*  *  *

Which is all the more ironic, given al-Baghdadi's comments this morning...

* * *

More broken promises!!

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is going to be shocked when he learns that there is oil beneath that ground where he sends the men wearing boots to fight ISIS which was created and funded by the US, UK, Saudia Arabia, Qatar, Israel, etc.

Real Reportage --- Old School Style

A rare example of authentic reportage, old school style --- of Gen. Bolger, on Democracy Now! with Amy and Juan, where the general was promoting his new book.

By asking pertinent questions, something completely foreign to the American corporate-pop-cultural newsy flake today, they tore the general's ass up!

They got him to rehash the flimsiest of excuses for illegally invading Iraq, said excuses would have provided 1,000% greater reason to have invaded Saudi Arabia instead, if any country was to have been invaded!

This General Bolger is responsible for the training of the Iraqi military, which immediately folded at the first sight of ISIS, as well as the Afghanistani military (any bets on how long they will last at the first sign of trouble?????).

The clip is below:

http://www.democracynow.org/2014/11/12/why_we_lost_retired_us_general

This General Electric, or General Douchetard, simply will never get it!

On 9/11 fifteen Saudi terrorists, plus three Yeminis and one Egyptian, attacked the USA, if the official Cheney/Bush conspiracy is to be believed (or were at least the cutouts utilized by other parties). Yet the US gov't attacked Iraq and Afghanistan?

My attitude is, if they want war, they'll get two: One, their racket enabling war somewhere in the world, and two, another with me at home when they try to take my children.

The key is to make it more dangerous for them here than their supposed racket enabling enemy elsewhere.

“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.

I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914.

I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in.

I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street.

I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912.

I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916.

I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903.

In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”

If only it were true!.  The number of combatants in the Vietnam war were relatively few and the allies were well defined.  There were the Russians and the NV vs. the US and the SV.  In Iraq and Syria you've got the US, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Hezbollah, the Assad regime, the "pro-Western" rebels, ISIS, the "we aren't ISIS" al-qaeda rebels, the Kurds, the Turks, the Chinese, and on and on.  And who's in who's camp changes depending on the day of the week.

Vietnam was really only a quagmire because LBJ limited the bombing to empty forest.  Had the US conducted actual warfare against NV, the conflict would have ended in the US's favor in a fraction of the decade it dragged on.

So you're going to rewrite history are you Quantum Numbnuts?

North Viet Nam was primarily a rural agrarian country. However the U.S. made total effort to bomb it into "the stone age". There is no way in hell more bombing would have changed anything. The U.S. lost that war fair and square just as it did in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now we're doubling down in Iraq.

From Wikipedia:

"By the time the United States ended its Southeast Asian bombing campaigns, the total tonnage of ordnance dropped approximately tripled the totals for World War II. The Indochinese bombings amounted to 7,662,000 tons of explosives, compared to 2,150,000 tons in the world conflict."

The Pentagon should consider creating an elite meth addled, heroin addicted kamikaze fighting troop of about 100K that we could send over the hill at ISIS...the drugs would blunt the effect of the first hits ensuring at least a couple rounds get off before the body gave out.  Would save roughly $40K/yr in treatment costs and full military honors would be a nice way for family to remember their lost relatives.  $4B per year budget savings while fighting terror.

USA played a central role in creating and promoting the forces that became ISIS. The US recruited world wide to get Jihadist elements to come to Turkey and Jordan for training as a force to invade and conquer Syria. Which the USA would then install a figure head government in. As time went on the Jihadists not only came, they took the arms, funding and training and went into Syria. Jihadists came from across the globe, over 4,000 are passport carrying EU citizens. As the Syrian war dragged on the radical elements grew and grew and got more arms and more money from USA. A year ago they dominated the Syrian war, not a US Moderates, but as full blown radical terrorist Jihadists. Still the USA kept funding arming and training, hoping this new terror army would finish Assad, then the USA could declare war on that same terror army, destroy it in battle and win Syria as a full conquest while claiming to be fighting terror.

If you check Obama's newest plans for Syria, you will see the scenario I just wrot of coming to pass. Obama will boots on the ground and also says he will remove Assad in order to better right ISIS. THE SAME ISIS Obama recruited, trained, payed, armed and transported to Syria. You see, you create a foe, then claim you need to fight him, while all along that foe was a straw man to get at what you really wanted all along, the open conquest and rule of Syria as a NATO puppet state.
