Russia To Dispatch Long-Range Bomber Patrols Over Gulf Of Mexico, Caribbean

Tyler Durden's picture

While the west is seemingly eager to once again restart the military escalation, if only in rhetoric for now, surrounding the east-Ukraine conflict, leading to a report that the "European Union and the U.S. will weigh further sanctions against Russia’s economy and Ukrainian separatists, after the reported movement of tanks, artillery and combat troops into eastern Ukraine", Russia has chosen to change track completely and give the US a dose of its own cooking, by bringing the military threat next to the borders of the US itself.

As cited by RIA and Bloomberg, yesterday Russian Defense Minister Shoigu said that "his country’s military will start conducting regular long-range bomber patrols along Russia’s borders and over the Arctic Ocean." It gets better: while Russia has repeatedly denied it has moved its own troops into east Ukraine contrary to western press reports over the past week, it is making it quite clear it will soon move bombers just off the coast of the US: the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

Quote Shoigu:

“In this situation, we have to maintain a military presence in the western part of the Atlantic and the eastern part of the Arctic Ocean, in the Caribbean and in the Gulf of Mexico."

RIA also adds that according to Shoigu Russian long-distance aviation flights and military preparedness has increase substantially over the past year.

So while NATO is building up its own forces along Russian borders, using even the smallest escalation in tensions over Ukraine as a pretext to send even more troops and warplanes, Russia has decided to retort in kind.

CNN adds more:

Russia plans to send long-range bombers to patrol the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, the nation's defense minister said, amid escalating tensions with the West over Ukraine. The patrols would bring the flights close to the United States' territorial waters. In September, the U.S. intercepted six Russian planes, including fighter jets, near airspace off Alaska, officials said.

The plan to send the long-range bombers is in response to a growing international resentment against Russia, defense minister Sergey Shoigu said Wednesday.

In addition, he said, Russia will boost its security in Crimea, the region it annexed from Ukraine earlier this year.

"In many respects, this is connected with the situation in Ukraine, with fomentation of anti-Russian moods on the part of NATO and reinforcement of foreign military presence next to our border," Shoigu said.

"Under these conditions, the formation of full-fledged and self-sufficient forces on the Crimean peninsula is a priority task."

Shoigu said Russian long-range bombers will conduct flights along the Russian border and over the Arctic Ocean.

"In the current situation we have to maintain military presence in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific, as well as the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico," he said. "Due to that, as part of the drills, Russian long-range bombers will conduct flights along Russian borders and over the Arctic Ocean."

So will sights like these become the norm soon in proximity to US shores? Probably not, but America's response to being in the same situation as Russia finds itself, would certainly be one to watch.

Those bombers are antiques, they have no military value except as annoyances to the US, who will have to spend $$$$$ to send the latest hardware up to hassle them back.

You know you can hear a Bear from 40 miles away, but American international waters only end 7 miles out.  So, in theory, you could be in Galveston Beach and hear Russian bombers.

Yup. The old turbo-prop bombers are just for show, and a big 'ol middle finger to the O'bomb-a administration. Probably not even armed. The real threat has always been nuclear submarines, but as the saying goes, out of sight, out of mind.

BTW, you can bet that those TU95s are cheaper to fly and maintain than B-52s and really aren't at any disadvantage compared with a B-52.

Because the US signed a treaty with Ukraine, which was ratified by the US Senate, and so is US law, to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for the Ukraine giving up a massive nuclear arsenal in its possession after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Once you make a promise, you have to keep it, or all your other promises become suspect.

And BTW, Russia also signed this treaty because they did not want a nuclear armed Ukraine. Ukraine was certified fissile material free in 2013, after which Russia promptly began to undermine Ukrainian territorial integrity, in violation of its treaty obligations.

Russia is, and has been for a 1,000 years, the aggressor in this region. This is a historical fact that cannot be argued with any seriousness.

Should the US have gotten involved in the first place? Who knows what would have happened if Ukraine retained it's vast nuclear arsenal. The US was concerned about "loose nukes" and terrorist getting hold of the weapons, and the Ukraine was not able to properly control the arsenal, and thought the better course was to get them to get rid of them. The only way for that to happen, because they were rightly afraid of Russia, was to give them a promise the US would defend them. Was that smart? We can only opine, because we can not know the outcome of any alternate scenario. But the fact remains, the US gave them a promise, that promise is in fact US law, and great powers that walk away from such promises see bad results in a whole lot of other areas.

It goes back to a warning about foreign entanglements. You should choose them wisely and sparingly. But once entangled, well, there you are.

I appreciate your insight.  Sometimes the sarcasm, conspiracy theories, and anti-semitism are so thick on ZH it is hard to find a kernal of knowledge.

My response would be, we made treaties with Ukraine, yes, but isn't Ukraine fundementally different now than the Ukraine we made the promise to? The people in the west staged a coup, throwing out Yanukovych, the democratically elected president that the majority of the eastern Ukranians supported. It seems like the CIA was in the background pulling all sorts of strings. We have a rougue government in Ukraine, a rogue CIA, a rogue president in this country, a rogue Supreme Court, many rogue congress people.

The treaty is irelevant at this point in time, even though the U.S. is pretending we still care a lot about Ukraine. I think there is a deeper reason the U.S. is poking Russia, not sure what it is though yet...

BraveSirRobin bravely bleated:

Funny how you know so much about some imaginary treaty yet can't even tell the name of it.

I know you can't possibly mean the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, since that was a political agreement, not a treaty.

Once you make a promise, you have to keep it, or all your other promises become suspect.

Funny as a one-legged snake. US promises, treaties, etc., fall under US rule of law, which is selective application of law when it is profitable, toss it when not.

Russia is, and has been for a 1,000 years, the aggressor in this region. This is a historical fact that cannot be argued with any seriousness.

Waooo, that is quite thick, but US citizens do love their fantasies. Made me laugh. That is quite a delusion this US citizen tries to sell.

Russian Bombers in the Gulf of Mexico?

They are stationed in Russia. Their range is 8000 miles. They refuel from Il-76 tankers. Basically they can fly for as long as the crew can take it.

The particular group that caused this discussion started out as a group of four and were refueled somewhere off the coast of California. Also there is a pair of TU-160 supersonic bombers, currently on a goodwill visit in Venezuela.

They may look strange relics from the Cold War but they are very effective long range surveilance and strike aircraft carrying a selection of stand-off missiles.

Fine by me.  Let 'em spend the money, flying around on 6000 miles from home. Drain their cash for show.

Just more shukkin' & Jivin' by putin. So what?

More importantly,

This is a terrific opportunity for the US defense industry to field test all those highly-classified, ultra top-secret energy weapons they've been working on for 20 years.

Pretty awesome.  They travel light speed (of course. they're light) and deliver various types of focused energy up to several miles away (or up). Be it microwaves or laser or whatever.

Here's a sample of what's going on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awsQs4ct0c4&feature=player_detailpage

How unfortunate when those bombers' electronics suddenly melt at 50,000 feet. Or one of the engines "accidentally" explodes.

With the well-known safety record of russian millitary equipment, not to mention, that 6-sigma quality control, it'll be a good show.

Yes, well, thats probably why those seventies bombers are flying there.

Russia does not have a shortage of those Tu-95, nor brave souls willing to fly them around the globe neither.

Its a typical aggressive ELINT mission, listen, register frequencies, penetrate the airspace until the adversary is forced to scramble expensive jets to escort you out.

And if you die in process, well, soldiers fate, at least you will lie in warm seas frequented by naked ladies and not in permafrost near Ufa.

Yeah everything was planed from the start, it has nothing to do with complacency, taking things for granted, loss of integrity, a belief in inherent superiority, exceptionalism and downright hubris.  Nothing to do with the natural path of all empires, that have fallen into decadence, degeneration and disintegration.  Nope, the US is different, the only way for the US to be brought down was with a conspiracy plan from within(note the idea of US exeptionalism right there).  US is different, no way it would go down the path of the Roman Empire, has to be something else.  US is exceptional after all.

Get it through your heads, Obama and the rest of the assclowns are a symptom not the cause.  Once eternal vigilance went to sleep, assuming it was ever awake,  the rest naturally followed.  Stop chasing ghosts here, if you want to be mad at someone over all this be mad at the idiot with no brains and a vote.  There is plenty of them out there.

Russian bombers operate in a different way. They don't drop bombs. Instead, they drop cruise missiles, so they can effectively hit a target 3000 miles away.

Anyway, why do you think they start these strategic patrols? Pack some electronic warefare equipment on those bombers, and you will be able to collect a ton of useful information (radar station frequencies and locations, communication channels, etc etc.)

Also, there is something that Tyler missed. Few months ago Putin paid a visit to few latin american countries. On that trip, Russia wrote off some 90% of cuban debt. What does he get in exchange of that move? Simple, Russia will restart the Lourdes SIGINT station in Cuba. Yes, a spy station few hundred miles away from the US.

Maybe we can respond in-kind to what the Russians did to us back in April of this year:

"On 10 April 2014, the USS Donald Cook entered the waters of the Black Sea and on 12 April a Russian Su-24 tactical bomber flew over the vessel triggering an incident that, according to several media reports, completely demoralized its crew, so much so that the Pentagon issued a protest [1]."

"As the Russian jet approached the US vessel, the electronic device disabled all radars, control circuits, systems, information transmission, etc. on board the US destroyer."

Look at how corrupt the procurement process is.  The F-35 is junk.  The guy who helped co-design the F-15 and A-10 and who worked on the F-15 has said so.   The wings are too small, it is overweight, the software still is not done, it is incredibly delicate to any ground fire, it is a gas hog, it cannot turn and the list goes on.

One of the largest (aipac) defense contractor owners is and was a big supporter of Obama and LBJ.  The events leading up to JFK being whacked and their incredibly overpriced plane of the era are very "curious."  It was a plane looking for a war.  Lots of defense contractors in Texas at the time wanted a war.   LBJ wanted what he always wanted - more and more money and power.

Another problem for American weapons is Russian programmers.  The USA uses H1Bs etc while the Russians hire their best programmers.  Weaponry is all about software now and missiles.

I am thinking the Russians may have used some portable EMP against the USS Donald Cook.

Your comments are rather incoherrent. F35 is not junk but it is a hotch potch overpriced political plane. Its a jack of all trades and master of none and the politicians designed it to work for the Navy, Air Force and Marines but by so doing is not perfect for any of them. The B version is just stupid and should never have been built and the C (Navy) version is not ideal for the Navy. The A (Air Force) version is to replace the F16 as a multi-purpose jet. Remember F16 with its small wings and vulnerability to ground fire isnt as rugged as the A10, nor is the F16 as dominant as the F15C as a fighter or capable as F15E as a bomber.  But the cost of an F16 to buy and operate is half that of the F15. As a USAF general put it to me 'the choice is not between an F15 and an F16, its a F15 or 2 F16s. Most days 2 F16s are more useful to me than one F15." The F35 fails because it is too expensive for the F16 replacement role. A big reason for it being too expensive is the politicians demand for one jet to do too many different roles. There should have been an Air Force jet and a different Navy jet and the Marines should dump their aircraft and get air support from Navy and USAF - there's a big cost saver!

You say Weaponry is all about software now and missiles.  The F35 is a software driven aircraft and the cockpit info suite is a generation ahead of F22 or Typhoon or anything else flying. Its also designed to be easily upgradable. Every pilot can reconfigure the displays as and when he wants. On ingress bringing up air to air displays then flicking to bombing then flicking to defensive if attacked. The heart of the F35 is the software and pilot displays. The jet can be a mini-Awacs if needed. But it is still too expensive for what it is.

Now chance of US-Russia war increases. Neocons may get more war as they always wanted:

Dozens of “near miss” incidents bring NATO and Russia to brink of war

By Alex Lantier
11 November 2014

According to a report published yesterday by the London-based European Leadership Network think tank (ELN), there have been at least 40 “near misses” in which the Russian military and NATO forces, sent to Eastern Europe following last February’s far-right, NATO-backed putsch in Kiev, came close to military conflict.

The ELN writes that NATO-Russian relations since March 2014, have been in “a situation in which mistrust, fear, and shortened leadership decision times characterize a volatile stand-off between a nuclear-armed state and a nuclear-armed alliance.” The report continues: “To perpetuate that reality in the circumstances described in this report is risky at best. At worst, it could prove catastrophic.”

Thanks Barry MIC.  Thanks for poking em.  Thanks for messing around in their backyard.  Hells bells, even in 9th grade history they taught us about Russia and the Crimea and how important it was to them.

Do you suppose Russia and China have figured out how easy it would be to wreck the US?  Just a few cruise missiles (hell conventional) coming down on a few select cities and all hell breaks loose.  It would never be the same here.  We'd unravel.  Please no horseshit about Americans coming together and patriotic rah rah.

I dont think we have any idea what we're getting ourselves into.  The last time there was chaos in North America was Civil War I.  For the Russians it was 1941-1945 and they lost @20 million.  So we're trying to surround them and they suffered catastrophe during WWII and we're suprised there's bombers off the coast of Florida and California?

Absolutely! they will be shot down and go down in flames and hundreds of thousands of pieces raining to the ground, the crews most likely being killed. They will have been shot down by the most sophisticated aircraft and weapons systems the world has ever seen, shot down by the best trained, dedicated pilots in the world, second to none. Those planes will be shot down. But most will be shot down after their payloads are released.

There in lies the crux of the mentality of the Russian compared to the American. The Russians won WWII. They sacrificed 25 million soldiers and another 50 million wounded. That was half of the entire country. The Russians are willing to go all the way. All America has is superior tech. That's really it. Nukes would render everything fucked so let's hope that does not get bandied about, but a conventional war and you would be surprised at just how willing they are to defend themselves and they see this whole thing as defense. As for planes being shot down, it's the fucking submarines to worry about. I am sure there are some parked off of each shore.

The Warsaw Pact countries had huge depots of equipment prepostioned ready for soldiers to arrive at time of war. These sites are littered across UKraine. It is highly posible that Kiev did not know where there all were, but Moscow did. This allowed the Seperatists to not only use very large numbers of captured Ukrainian Army equipment but to plunder these stores as well. The delay in getting this plundered gear in a usuable state could explain why it took a while to get it into action.

In addition newer stuff has been going over the border from Russia, either bought or loaned. Very little if any current Russian Army armour has been photographed in Ukraine most of it seems to be what they would regard as obsolete. Lots of consumables especially MANPADs and logistics support as well.

The US coup didn't take into account how important the Crimea is to Putin/Russia. The US is lucky the Russians didn't simply roll their tanks into Kiev the next day.

I do feel bad for the Ukrainians caught in the middle though... but I don't think Obama or Putin care about the victims at all.

Never have I heard from Putin lovers their official version of how those so called "seperatists" get their colons of tanks, soldiers, GRADs, etc.

good question...but I've been too occupied with how ISIS gets their colons of munitions to think about it.

viedoklis_lv. You omit to mention who started the Ukraine conflict.

Was it Russia? No.

Was it the USG, CIA, EU and NATO? Yes.

All actions taken by Russia are a response to that.

Conflict started when Ukranians went into streets and demanded to corupt president which was Putins puppet to step down but he refused. Conflict escalated when he run to his papa in Russia and Ukranian transitional goverment canceled russian language as official languagein Ukraine. Then many russians where angry and went out into streets - that is what Putin and his agents was working on and wanted to gain. From there it started to militarize by little green man in Crimea and its occupation till open invasion in east Ukraine. That happen because many Ukranians where sick of Russia rulein Ukraine and thought EU will fix their life and country (as we know that would not happen - but they think that way).

Incredible. Latvian troll viedorklis can't tell words without sinking into cheap propaganda. Stupid as stupid, can only be accepted by people who are not interested in facts but in ganging around lies.

When somebody asks you to believe a lie while giving it away explicitly as a lie, it is a call for submission. Kievan Yatzi propaganda is all about submission, submission.
