Apple Now Worth More Than Entire Russian Stock Market
With Apple at record highs, its market capitalization is now bigger than Russia's entire stock market (the 20th largest market in the world). What's more, as Bloomberg notes, there would be enough money left over after selling Apple and buying Russia to purchase over 190 million contract-free 64Gb iPhone6 Pluses (enough for every Russian).
If you owned Apple Inc., and sold it, you could purchase the entire stock market of Russia, and still have enough change to buy every Russian an iPhone 6 Plus.

Russia, the 20th largest among the world’s major markets, is not the only one Apple has surpassed. The company, which forecasts a record holiday-sales quarter and has $155 billion in cash, is also bigger than 17th-ranked Singapore and 18th-ranked Italy.

You assume past performance is a perfect indicator of future returns. Extrapolated, Apple in 10 years will be worth more than the whole solar system. That may not be possible even if the Fed keeps pumping.

"Useless trinkets", handheld powerful computers are trinkets, good one, up votes I assume are for the comedy??? Gold is a useless trinket and I like gold. My iPhone 6 plus brings the entire fucking world into my hand and I can put it in my pocket. It is anything but a useless trinket.
And yet, most people use it to waste time. Yes. The technology behind the innovations over the last 2 decades had tremendous potential.
But people largely use the tech. for leisure. Which detracts from genuine human progress. You can't have progress if kids are too busy playing Candy Crush instead of studying mathematics, or physics, or chemistry.
Or out building something. Or designing new innovations.
And you know what? Gold is a hedge against few extremely negative scenarios. It isn't particularly adept at encouraging investment and it is inventory. It sits there. But you know what else? It's not going to turn your (or someone else's) child into a dribbling idiot either.
Edit: Case in point about leisure versus genuine productivity-
I looked at a list of top-selling paid for iPad Apps. 2 in the top 10 were (semi)useful business apps. 17 out of the top 100 were either linked to business, or education. The rest of the top 100 were stupid shit like Minecraft, or Snake Simulator. iPhone is even worse. Now, yes this might be a biased sample. Some of the highly downloaded free Apps might be genuinely educational. Maybe people have the self-restraint to use a mathematics learning program over "Five Nights at Freddy's". I don't know, but you have to admit, a lot of folks are using their iWhatevers as a mobile gaming system.

There are more apple customers, who all purchase on the iTunes ecosystem than pure-blood Russians of middle class wage earning status. So if we were to look as Apple as a "SOV" they would have a better credit rating outlook and sustainable "tax base" than the Kremlin. Unless Putin legalizes and taxes Crocodil.
