Market Turmoil: 10amET Sparks Sudden Reversal

Tyler Durden's picture

The USD seemed to get a sudden flush at 10am, which sparked bond (10Y -3bps), stock (S&P +5pts), and gold buying (up over $15).... no catalyst as far as we can see other than UMich inflation expectations plunging...

Did some algo forget POMO has finished?

only catalyst we can see is inflation expectations collapsed...

TD- thanks for that link.  It does bring back memories.  Lawn Darts.... oh, my God, who can forget Lawn Darts?

Remember when trampolines didn't come with a net around the outside of them?  If you went off the edge you hit the ground like a sack of potatos and got scraped up, maybe broke your arm.  Response: don't fall off next time, dum dum.

I still intentionally don't act like a "helicopter parent".  I give my kids WIDE latitude to go out and explore.  While the other parents are nit-picking their kids to death (and driving both the kids and themselves insane), mine are coming back from 3 hours of play somewhere, looking a little drity and banged up, telling me how they made friends with somebody on the other side of the neighborhood and rode their dirt bike around for an hour.  Yeah, they get more cuts and scrapes than other kids, but you tell me whose kids are mentally healthier and more able to cope with situations when Mom and Dad aren't around.

Lawn darts, or were they jarts?

I believe they were designed for the baby's softspot on their head.

I remember watching hcokey where the goalie didn't wear a mask. That's fucking crazy.

Gerald Ford played center at U of M with leather helmits. That's why he was so bright.

Pretty soon the NFL will be playing flag football. You can hit, but not too hard. Most wives will take bigger hits off the headboard than the NFL.

something lit a fire under paper PM's and the Euro....dollar got hammered.

I was kinda hoping for a 14 handle on silver today just for shits and giggles and more cheaper phyzz to add the stack.

But hell, I won't gripe one bit about 16, 17, 18, 19, or 20+ silver either at this point.  It's still on a fire sale until we break 50/oz once of these days soon as far as I'm concerned.

i've never found the methodology for the Michigan survey

but a few years ago David Rosenberg said it was a weighted survey ... by degree of confidence.

in other words, if say 70% to 80% of respondents thought things same/slightly worse ... it would/could be drowned out by  20% (hoo, uh, happen to be the 20% hoo own stocks ... and just witnessed a 2000 surge in the Dow) ... for a net increase

I think I figured out USDJPY.

Fed is unwinding QE via Bank of Japan.

BOJ is hoarding USD which has the same effect as Fed extinguishing USD.

In return, USA would supply energy to Japan.

Fed basically going under Pentagon orders by congress permission

Could be wrong, but I believe this might be a classic equity algo "double entry" ploy, in which they temporarily take profits on overnight and pre-10 a.m, moves, try to scare early shorts out with a VIX-inspired surge, horse around faking an up move for awhile, then reverse again and take us back down thru lunch. (At least that's what I hope, as I closed a short, then re-entered just after 10)

october retail sales - the ultimate massage by census bureau economists.

not really meant as a slam toward them, but the number of chains who report has dwindled A LOT in the past few years (since the recession walmart, target, kohls, etc have chosen not to report monthly sales ... survey is VOLUNTARY ... so it stands to reason those chains with less than glamorous results have decided to no longer report) ... so a lot of black box magic needed.

having said that census reported a +3.8% gain year over year for retail chain portion of retail sales ... ICSC - Goldman Sachs weekly survey of retail sales for october year over year

week ending 4th ... +3.9%

week ending 11th ... +3.8%

week ending 18tdh ... +2.1%

week ending 25th ... +2.8%

week ending 1st ... +1.8%

another anamoly - halloween on a friday this year (thursday last year) ... SUPPOSEDLY was to boost halloween sales (a lot more parties since weekend)

...they just might see a dangerous vector in the USD bull

that MUST NOT HAPPEN!

Nobody realized the big offer sizes against the SNB wall in the EURCHF just before GOLD was surging ? Big offers in EURCHF continued show up to Friday's GOLD session end. There were some comments from the SNB. You remember ? 30th of November ?

Be aware.
