America Truly Is Becoming A '1984' Society
Submitted by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,
If only George Orwell could see us today. When he wrote “1984” back in 1948, he probably never imagined that the “totalitarian, bureaucratic world” that he imagined would ever actually become a reality. But that is precisely what is happening. We live at a time when the government monitors billions of our phone calls and emails and hardly anyone gets upset about it. We live at a time when corporations systematically collect our voiceprints and our televisions watch us. We live at a time when reporters that try to dig into the misdeeds of the government have their computers hacked, and when nearly one out of every three Americans has a file in the FBI’s master criminal database. The control freaks that run our society are absolutely obsessed with watching, tracking, recording and monitoring virtually everything that we do. We truly are becoming a “1984” society, and if we continue on the path that we are currently on eventually our world will be transformed into something more hellish than anything that George Orwell ever imagined.
These days, virtually every type of government surveillance is taken to the extreme. For example, there is definitely nothing wrong with normal undercover police work. But these days, almost every single federal government agency conducts extensive undercover operations. At this point, even the IRS and the Department of Agriculture rely on undercover operatives to spy on ordinary citizens. So the next time you are visiting a tax preparer, buying a yacht or attending a peaceful political protest, the person standing next to you just might be a government spy…
The federal government has significantly expanded undercover operations in recent years, with officers from at least 40 agencies posing as business people, welfare recipients, political protesters and even doctors or ministers to ferret out wrongdoing, records and interviews show.
At the Supreme Court, small teams of undercover officers dress as students at large demonstrations outside the courthouse and join the protests to look for suspicious activity, according to officials familiar with the practice.
At the Internal Revenue Service, dozens of undercover agents chase suspected tax evaders worldwide, by posing as tax preparers, accountants drug dealers or yacht buyers and more, court records show.
Government undercover work has become so extreme that sometimes undercover agents from one agency end up investigating undercover agents from another agency. In fact, there have been times when agents from different government agencies have pulled weapons on each other without even realizing it…
The extent of those secret operations within the departments can be so high that it leads to severe overlap, such as one undercover agent investigating an alleged criminal, who also turns out to be a fed on duty, law enforcement officials said.
“There are all sorts of stories about undercover operations gone bad,” Jeff Silk, a longtime undercover agent and supervisor at the Drug Enforcement Administration, said in an interview. “People are always tripping and falling over each other’s cases.”
Silk added that in some instances, agents even draw weapons on each other before realizing they are on the same side.
The government also uses a vast array of electronic methods to spy on all of us.
For instance, it has recently been revealed that the Justice Department places devices that emulate cell phone towers on Cessna airplanes and flies them around major cities. These devices are then used to trace the phones of potential targets…
The U.S. Department of Justice is putting devices that emulate cellphone towers in Cessna aircraft and flying them around the country to track the locations of cell phones, a practice that targets criminal suspects but may also affect thousands of U.S. citizens, according to a news report Thursday.
The program is run by the Department of Justice’s U.S. Marshals Service and has been in operation since at least 2007, according to the report in the Wall Street Journal, which cited two unnamed sources. The aircraft are flown out of at least five metropolitan-area airports and can cover most of the U.S. population, it said.
Cell phones are programmed to connect to whichever nearby cell tower has the strongest signal. The fake cell towers trick phones into thinking they have the strongest signal, then read the devices’ unique registration numbers when they connect, the Journal report says.
And of course this is just one example of how the government uses technology to monitor us. For quite a few more examples, please see my previous article entitled “15 Signs That We Live During A Time Of Rampant Government Paranoia“.
At this point things have gotten so bad that even our public schools are training our children for life in a “Big Brother” police state.
When I was growing up, it would have been unthinkable for men with guns to come storming into a classroom. But now it is a regular occurrence all across the nation. And sometimes the students are not even told that a drill is taking place. The following is an excerpt from a news story about one of these drills that just took place down in Florida…
Lauren Marionneaux, a seventh-grade student at Jewett Middle Academy, said it was about 9 a.m. Thursday when the principal announced the school was going on lockdown.
Students huddled into classrooms waiting for further instructions. Instead, they started hearing voices in the hallway.
“A lot of people started getting scared because we thought it was a real drill,” Lauren said. “We actually thought that someone was going to come in there and kill us.”
Two police officers burst into Lauren’s classroom with their guns drawn — one carrying, what Winter Haven police said, was an AR-15 rifle.
Would you want your little girl to feel like she is about to die?
I certainly would not.
But this kind of thing is done to condition our young people to life in a police state. They are going to grow up thinking that it is normal for heavily armed men in dark suits to storm in and lock everything down.
Even though we are not in prison, we are being systematically trained to act as if we were. Our police forces are being increasingly militarized, and all law enforcement authorities are now trained to bark orders at the general public and treat them like dirt. Most of the population fears those in authority these days, and that is precisely how those in power want it.
And as John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute has pointed out, anyone that dares to resist this brutality is squashed like a bug…
For example, police arrested Chaumtoli Huq because she failed to promptly comply when ordered to “move along” while waiting outside a Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant for her children, who were inside with their father, using the bathroom. NYPD officers grabbed Huq, a lawyer with the New York City Public Advocate’s office, flipped her around, pressed her against a wall, handcuffed her, searched her purse, arrested her, and told her to “shut up” when she cried out for help, before detaining her for nine hours. Huq was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Oregon resident Fred Marlow was jailed and charged with interfering and resisting arrest after he filmed a SWAT team raid that took place across the street from his apartment and uploaded the footage to the internet. The footage shows police officers threatening Marlow, who was awoken by the sounds of “multiple bombs blasting and glass breaking” and ran outside to investigate only to be threatened with arrest if he didn’t follow orders and return inside.
Eric Garner, 43 years old, asthmatic and unarmed, died after being put in a chokehold by NYPD police, allegedly for resisting arrest over his selling untaxed, loose cigarettes, although video footage of the incident shows little resistance on Garner’s part. Indeed, the man was screaming, begging and insisting he couldn’t breathe. And what was New York Mayor Bill De Blasio’s advice to citizens in order to avoid a similar fate? Don’t resist arrest.
Yes, we still have a bit more freedom than the poor souls in George Orwell’s “1984“, but our liberties and freedoms are eroding a little bit more with each passing day.
And just like in “1984”, most of the population has come to accept the status quo as the new “normal”.
So is there any hope that we will wake up, or will our society continue to march toward oblivion?

"becoming" a 1984 society ? ?
kinda like Chris Christie is becoming obese ?
WOW this story doesn't have a list? M Snyder must be slipping.....
:-)
What if....it actually was an instruction manual?
*Mind explosion sound effects*
Seriously though, reading is for people that waste time and people that want to figure out how to take over the world. It's pretty obvious what was going to happen right?

A Final Warning from George Orwell...there will be the intoxication of power always at every moment there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless…
If you want to imagine the future; imagine a boot stepping on a human face forever.
The moral of this story is.. don’t let it happen.
You would have marched, if we gave him enough time.

Yup, we're at the restraining chairs and bitey rats stage. It's fucking great. That's what you get for living on the shores of the great pirate nation state of 'The City'. And no one seems to have noticed that the monarchy and power structure have been totally unconstitutional for the last 400 years. Most of 'em don't even realise we have a constitution. Or a republic.
Americans think they know how to sheeple? Pah! We've been sheepling since before your fucking country existed. So there.
Listen.
Oh yea! Technology is so great. It's little technoboy. I luv technology. Oh it's so fucking great!
C4 each and every cellular antenna! C4 every 1/4 mile of fiber on earth!
Shitcan the fucking experiment!
Isn't there a river you should be out shitting in somewhere?
lol
Listen.
Don't you two Americans have an appointment to double choke on Icahn's cock today.
That's right Bitchez, make the big lizards tongue flicker. Make it flicker. On your knees, make it flicker.
OH!
Come'on Bitchez! Bring it.
Alright Gandhi, no need to get your jodhpurs in a bunch.
Here's a great version of 1984 produced and aired by the BBC in 1954:

Enjoy!
Better yet, go see the new film "Citizenfour" about Snowden

i kinda prefer " V for Vendetta " ... especially the ending !
Don't forget, today is Tuesday, and Tuesday is Soylent Green Day.
We are at war with Flabbovia. We have always been at war with Flabbovia.
Snyder is a fucking clown. The sooner he's "disappeared" the better off we'll all be.
what's 'this "we" shit kemosabe?
Anyone who thinks this is anywhere close to being like 1984 is:
1. An idiot
2. A clickbaiting halfwit desperate for attention
3. Someone who has never read 1984
clearly you part of option 3.
surprisingly you know writing, so you know reading....weird.
let me fix the story of the book for you. the point is not love, point is not military, point is nothing but a simple (fancy) exemple of method showing that you have only one choice for yourself in your own life : to love the system, or to die.
in all time, whatever country, you always had a relative scale of freedom, but there is something common to all : you have the right to shake the system, but not to destabilize the system.
you will understand one day, maybe.
The spirit of the article of mr Snyder is correct in assesing that we move to a 1984 condition. I do not agree with some remarks but that is normal. It is not of course literally the same it is how you read and understand 1984. This phenomena is not unique to the US, it happens everywhere also in Europe.
https://sites.google.com/site/symptomsoforwells1984/
"GEORGE ORWELL'S 1984 is a gruesome book which duly made its readers shudder. It did not, however, have the effect which no doubt its author intended. People remarked that Orwell was very ill when he wrote it, and in fact died soon afterward. They rather enjoyed the frisson that its horrors gave them and thought: "Oh well, of course it will never be as bad as that except in Russia! Obviously the author enjoys gloom; and so do we, as long as we don't take it seriously." Having soothed themselves with these comfortable falsehoods, people proceeded on their way to make Orwell's prognostications come true. Bit by bit, and step by step, the world has been marching toward the realization of Orwell's nightmares; but because the march has been gradual, people have not realized how far it has taken them on this fatal road."This site becomes more of a fucking joke every time a Snyder article is linked.
Some essays are outstanding, some good, some fair, some poor, and some are terrible.
If you or I agreed with every article/essay/thesis posted, it would be MSNBC, Fox, The WSJ, The NYT, and FUCK THAT NOISE.

So says the noob, been here a few weeks and already knows what's best for ZH eh?
and the criminals claim they run things
"So is there any hope that we will wake up, or will our society continue to march toward oblivion?"
I think we are waking up. The problem is the lock down is progressing much faster than the wake up.
CD, with all due respect, everyone who's awake is all that's ever going to be awake. Gotta work with what we got because there's no reinforcements coming.
I understand your point. But like I said people are waking up, as in the process of waking. I did not say they were fully awake. We all know waking to the insanity often occurs in stages that might spread out over months or years, even decades.
Show me anyone here on ZH who can claim to have been asleep to the lies, deception and Ponzi and then were instantly awake and knew everything there was to know. There is a lot of information to learn and even more information/propaganda already 'learned' that must be discarded, always a very difficult process. Most cannot take it in until they question, then discard, what they already think they know. This takes time, lots of it.
When considering this think about how you wake up in the morning. While you may open your eyes and see light and hear sounds, none of it is very clear and it does take some time before the mind and body are fully in gear. Some wake faster than others, but rare is the individual who is instantly awake and is fully functional.
Proof Americans are waking: Net Neut(ered)rality.
Jimmy Carter- one term president, sent packing with extreme prejudice.
Barack Obama- two term president, elected by a landslide both times.
They're not sleeping this time, my friend. They're in a coma, heavily sedated with the MSM singing lullaby songs at their bedisde.
Come on ND, a landslide? Sure, he beat McCain. As one of our friends said: "Well, guess we should get the black President thing out of the way". But Romney won the second election, so profound was the vote fraud. Not saying he would have been better, but he certainly could not be worse.
"War on Terror" man...you just have to keep thinking about the myriad of ways a terrorist could strike and you have your endless police state answer right there. They haven't even scratched the surface yet, just getting warmed up.
You didn't hear it here, but Monday they announce the War On Scrotum. Game over, MAN!!!!
TD- I know all too well about voter fraud. I live in PA. There were over 50 voting precincts in Philly that "officially" went 100% for BHO. Not a single vote for Romney or a libertarian or any other candidate. NOT ONE. No non-Democrat will ever win the White House again unless they can do it without Pennsylvania. Which is nearly impossible. Philly is the ultimate one-party town (way beyond even Chicago) and they can swing the entire state Democratic even if the rest of the place goes solidly for somebody else.
Nonetheless, I see nobody standing up to fight this. Anyone who does is clearly rayciss. And that's the ACTUAL reality, not to be confused with REAL reality.
Nobody is awake to this or the White House would need taller fences around it to keep the protesters out.
Hear ya, but they got clotheslined in the last election so "somethin'" be goin' on.
You say they got clotheslined. I ask what exactly has changed? We will wait and see after they are all done swearing... in.
Sure the MSM had a part, but the effect of endless printing of money is a very powerful narcotic which can keep a bunch of people asleep.
We are having a depression that exceeds 1929 yet most people do not really feel it.
Printing has allowed those that caused the Depression to profit rather than feeling any pain. The serfs also have gotten printed money to avoid the pain and therefore avoid the response that would have happened against the causes of the collapse... There has been no violence, riots, etc that there would have been if the money had not been printed...
welcome to deficit spending
Remember the Alamo.
Remember the Alamo? Why? We lost.
CD, some people are faster learners than others. I personally have to give a H/T to silver bear cafe as I found it to be a wonderful source of articles throughout the web. I will admit that it became quite clear that my whole life was a lie and was quite overwhelming...but was well worth it as I have taken total responsibility of my own life.
I try to shake awake every sheeple I can.
That is the value of ZH to me: a source of info, and a place to hone my "waking up skills."
If I have wrote/discussed it here, it is much easier to quickly hit the store cashier, or some guy at a garage sale, between the ears with it.
I actually keep a laminated card of the "workforce participation chart" in my shirt pocket for easy demonstration. It easily reinforces that unease that they all have about the real state of things.
Vets are getting easier to get to pay attention here lately.
Union guy, ex or otherwise, are a lost cause. "Rah, rah, the flag, backbone, rah, rah. Hilariously, they are the only ones that still spout anti-socialism/communism rhetoric.
Evangelical Christians are the funnest, as they live and breath cognitive dissonance. "Why do you hate Muslims when Jesus taught to forgive?" "If killing a baby is wrong, isn't sending someone's kid to kill or be killed 'wronger'?" "What's in your 'glass house'?"... I can tie them up faster than an old girlfriend could tie a cherry stem into a knot with her tongue.
I only hope that I have done some good. In some cases I have seen the benefits, but not nearly enough.
My job is getting easier and easier now that the gun and badge thugs are up to about 1.5 murders a week, a lot of whom are now white--"Could be you, a family member, or a friend next time." Imagine your 16 to 20 year old daughter was at a party, and a gun and badge thug jump up on her car and shot her four times thru the windshield for the political offense of "under age drinking?"
And that is another interesting point I push: "If there is no victim, it is not a crime, but an offense against the state--a political crime."
The idea is NOT to convince them, but to get info into their heads, "shit between their ears," and induce them to start thinking.
Wow, what a brain dump. Sorry.
An American, not US subject.
Saturday I engaged a guy in a discussion about what it means to be "an American citizen," and not a "subject of the DC US." He didn't seem convinced, but he is now definitely aware that there is a difference, and that they aren't the same thing.
And in the time it took you to write that some Ivy Leage Marxist professor's assistant just graded the test results for the 150 new freshmen in their class.
It's a good post and I applaud your personal efforts, but this is a numbers game. And the future leaders of the world are being taught the same way Obama was taught. And by the thousands.
"We don't need no education..."
in the wall ^^
"Hey ! Teacher ! . . . . "
Excuse me but it's 2014 and we don't use the term "freshman" anymore. They are called first year students now you sexist. You are probably the kind of person who would assign their baby a male or female name forcing a gender assignment on them before they were old enough to decide for themself what sex they would prefer to be.
One man and courage, make a majority.
whoa whoa hold on, you had a girlfriend who could tie a cherry stem into a knot with her tongue? can i get her number?
back OT, i like to hit war the hardest. gen. smedley butler, letters from veterans like the one posted on ZH a couple days ago, the israeli soldier who is traveling around the country speaking out against the genocide in palestine, obama's targeted drone killings of women and children etc. aim for their humanity. very few, even the biggest rah rah war cheerleaders, will take the side of team "kill the innocent".
that's how the good doctor paul woke me up. i used to be a good little neocon, blindly supporting war without giving it any independant thought. dr paul's argument is straightforward, easy to deliver, and filled with a bigger dose of reality than most sheeple get in a year:
we waste the lives of good young americans...active military commit suicide to the tune of 1 person per day and more soliders have died from suicide than from combat
we waste money...borrow money from chinese to kill brown people and rebuild their countries afterward
we're broke and we cant afford it anymore
and i like to add:
we have killed millions of innocents
we support brutal dictators
we are the real terrorists
No, not mere terrorists my friend, death squads.

There just 'some folks.'
The only natural place for governmnet is to provide justice where someone's Life, Liberty and/or Property have been violated, and to enforce contracts.
Spying is not needed, warranted, or part of the above functions.
Therefore, only a criminal governmnet need spy on the people.
An American, not US subject.
Playing "connect the dots" with governmnet always brings one to theft, treason, and tyranny.
+1,000 Excellent Post!
Sorry...if technology creates an ability to hide the fact that one is jeopardizing one's life, liberty, property or contract, wouldn't said government have to use technology to pry into the hidden information to enforce saif dutiful functions?
Not that I want people watching me poop....but if things had worked out where the sewer system was the most efficient means of delivering attack upon one's homestead, wouldn't the government need to watch my poops to ensure attacks weren't being carried out?
Just a side-thought to your obviously very well thought out stance.
"Sorry...if technology creates an ability to hide the fact that one is jeopardizing one's life, liberty, property or contract, wouldn't said government have to use technology to pry into the hidden information to enforce saif dutiful functions?"
Good and informative comment, however, the word and concern was was "spying," not evidence gathering.
An American, not US subject.
Sorry...if technology creates an ability to hide the fact that one is jeopardizing one's life, liberty, property or contract, wouldn't said government have to use technology to pry into the hidden information to enforce saif dutiful functions?
Sorry. but government officials were warned about 9/11, warned about the Boston bombers, the State Dept. allowed the underwear bomber to keep his visa and get on the plane so that they could see what he would do and they also instructed an FBI mole to build a real bomb which was used in the 1993 WTC bombing.
If the government can't catch real criminals whom they are already watching and even facilitate the crimes of suspected terrorists what possible good can come from giving them access to the private lives of every law abiding citizen?
I think the spying on all of the citizens isn't because they think the ter o r ist is within, It is to gain the knowledge of the sheeple ie, "Are they catching on to us? Are they organizing to overthrow us yet?" once tasting the fiat that corruption brings, the last thing they want is to lose that taste!
What troubles me is this data collection is under the guise of providing safety and security for the American people. This should cause one to immediately question why massive surveillance could possibly be effective. Even running all this data through sophisticated algorithms would only give a basic trend not target specific individuals. Of course they can claim conveniently that a lack of terrorist attacks was the result of such data mining and people don't question. Allowing the border to remain unsecured makes it obvious security is not their motive. I think it is something far more sinister and all here are probably at risk.
Miffed
This should make you feel much better.

This might be helpful when dealing with people of a certain musical persuasion.
Honestly I'm surprised Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" program didn't include compulsory calistenetics.
And look at DNC guru Lackoff. He wrote the playbook back in 2008 all about manipulating language and meanings of words. Thoughtcrime is PC. The one thing that several popular dystopian writers got wrong was sex. They prognosticated that sex would be verboten, but instead TPTB promote meaningless promiscuity.
LBJ knew more about controlling people than George Orwell or any of his ilk ever did.
"Just enough to quiet them down. Not enough to make a difference."
"I'll have those ni**ers voting Democrat for the next 100 years."
Giving somebody something they want is a better method of control than trying to take it away.
That's why you see emphasis on "entitlements" but you'll never see any mandatory physical activity (which is difficult) or training to actually DO anything (which is also difficult). Hand them just enough of the easier, softer path to keep them compliant. No revolts, no revolutions against those handing out the free shit.
That is definitely the fundamental issue. No one, rich or poor, is going to do one fucking thing that could potentially upset their respective apple carts.....
Verily NoDebt! THe Romans thought this as well and they eventually succombed.
panem et circenses.
There is nothing new under the sun.
There are two things that one can not compete with, insanity and free. And you are not free my friend.
The one thing that several popular dystopian writers got wrong was sex. They prognosticated that sex would be verboten, but instead TPTB promote meaningless promiscuity.
Huxley pretty much hit the nailon the head.
In the words of wise C3PO, "we're doomed."
You didn't build this.
If you start a post with a quote mark, it kills the arrows...so +1 greenie for you, Comrade.
There's prolly a hundert things that kill the arrows, and it's a source of innocent merriment for the inebriated editors, who get to drink all the arrows by themselves. hic
Don't worry about it. Half the people running the system would rather go after Loyd Blankfein, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bandar and the like.. What happens is that once the revolution hits it doesn't stop until the scumbags are wiped out and then some.
The ONLY way to stop this is to take out the FRN as a reserve currency.
Avoid debt at all costs and let this puppy implode.

What, no cat pics.....??
In England/Wales, your lawyer has to secretly report you to the government if they have mere suspicion that you may be engaged in "money laundering activity". If the lawyer (solicitor) "tips off" the client or fails to report this suspicion, they themselves are liable for imprisonable offenses.
Ostensibly, you may be asking the lawyer for advice on how NOT to launder money because you want to be compliant and it will likely result in a secret report to the government.

"The people will believe what the media tells them they believe"
No one believes the media anymore. That is why CBS, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, the NYTimes, et al, are in a panic.
Just quoting Orwell, but don't forget Hollyweird, 'educational' institutions, bloggers, etc. can fall under the guise of media and propagandists. People are believing some media now days, few think for themselves.
prolefeed
wrong, if the msm system was not working, it would have stop & disapeared a long time, you are wrong, a lot of ppl not used to technology keep faith in TV & radio & paper journals
know it.
True, but the proportion is declining all the time. As I've said many times, if the truth about 9/11 got out the MSM's credibility would never recover. 9/11 is the big kahuna.
As they say on Infowars,
If you do this to one of my family, you suffer a worse fate LEO.
EVEN IF YOU HARM MY DOGS.
Sure, since authoritarian Progressives control the fed'l gov't bureaucracy, we're experiencing shades of 1984. But, there's this:
The savage in Brave New World:
”But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.”
”In fact”, said Mustapha Mond, "you're claiming the right to be unhappy”.
“All right then,” said the savage defiantly, “I'm claiming the right to be unhappy.”
“Not to mention the right the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind”. There was a long silence.
“I claim them all,” said the savage at last.
The savage knew.
This will give you a picture of the Trojan horse headed our way.

Anyone seen Amazon's new gadget "Echo"
Even according to the ad, it is always listening.

Don't remember you having to buy your own telescreen on 1984
I was laughing so hard when I watched their promotional video for that.
It doesn't "listen" but "waits" for you to speak the safe word. LOL
My LORD if I had that anywhere near the dinner table my entire famiry would have been gitmo'd 10 years ago.
On a second thought, there might be an opportunity for a lawsuit here. It wouldn't be hard to capture the device sending packages over the net even when the safe word is not spoken using Wireshark or somesuch.
Any ZH sharks wanna take this on?
Of course the terms and conditions will require you agreeing with it sending "usage data" over the net, but there might be an oponing to sue over false advertising.
We don't have them in the Prole Sector...they're not provided, you know.

The balance and check of our three branches of governemnt system appears not functioning properly. We need to take a hard nose look at the problem . WHY is it that governemnt can have so much power ? WHY is it they can get away with working against the people and yet nothing can be done about that. May be we need to have a military force that is controlled by the citizen and used for internal purposes. i.e. Expanding the concept of gun ownership ! Preferrably, that military force should be composed of robots so it will not be subjected to propaganda , have no family concerns, and is always ready and answer only to the dicision of the citizen.
I think in 15 years or so when a computer can think like a human, it can devise software that interpret the law of the land and dish out judgement , enforce by a robotic military force. I think this is in our future.
It was the feedback between the funding of the political processes and the resulting corruption of the monetary system which was the SOURCE of the destruction of the rule of law, which included control over the fourth branch too, in the sense that the mass media, and school systems, were the fourth branch of government, which significantly contributed to destroying the ability of We the People to operate effectively as the final check and balance to the abusive power of governments.
THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM IS THE SOURCE OF THE MONEY. The privatization of the public "money" became a vicious spiral, which enabled the profits from frauds to be reinvested in more frauds. The development of the secret police, and the militarization of the police, are both manifestations of the basic problem, which could be described as the de facto privatization of the public murder system.
The best organized gangs of criminals were more and more able to capture control over governments, through bribery, intimidation, and assassination of those politicians that could not otherwise be bribed or intimidated. The resulting political puppets appointed judges which more and more rubber stamped the abuses of the powers of governments, ratifying one unconstitutional statute after another. Overall, the established systems became ignorant citizens electing dishonest politicians, that appointed corrupt judges.
The success of the best organized gangs of criminals in legalizing their ability to counterfeit the public "money" supply out of nothing may be called a runaway fascist plutocracy juggernaut, that has been building a fascist police state to protect itself and advance its agenda, as debt slavery backed by wars based on deceits. Thus, the government of the USA has become at least 99% based on legalized lies, backed by legalized violence.
The meanings of all the words that we use to describe our political reality have become thoroughly Orwellian. The word "money" had its meaning gradually perverted and inverted. All of the rest of the political language that people use follows the same pattern of manifesting in a Bizarro Mirror World, where everything appears proportionately backwards and distorted. MONEY MADE OUT OF NOTHING AS DEBTS BY PRIVATE BANKS IS ANTI-CAPITAL, ANALOGOUS TO ANTI-MATTER, WHICH HAS ANNIHILATED FREE MARKET CAPITALISM.
The Orwellian use of language, whereby all important words gradually had their meanings reversed, controls people's minds. It is practically impossible to have any rational public debates due to the degree to which that has already happened! There are no good labels to describe the political situation after the best organized gangs of criminals capture control over the government, and thoroughly corrupt everything that the government does, to the point where that becomes almost inconceivably crazy.
The existing systems, THAT WANT AND NEED A FASCIST POLICE STATE, may be described as an oligarchical plutocracy. The greatest power of those plutocrats is the power to make the public "money" supply out of nothing as debts, which fraud the government enforces. That is the SOURCE of the wealth of those plutocrats, which then drives the vicious feedback spirals of everything else, through every branch of government, and every social institution.
The double-bind is how to fix that problem AFTER it already has become entrenched, and operated at an exponential rate for more than a Century? How can anybody else who has to work for their money compete with a group that has ALREADY gained the power to make money out of nothing?
I have no answers to that question. I do not believe that there are any realistic answers. Therefore, we are living in a society which has become terminally sick and insane. There is nothing left within the established systems which could save themselves from their own mad self-destruction: ALL EFFECTIVE CHECKS AND BALANCES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED! The existing monetary system has become a totally metastasizing cancer, or a parasite that is killing its host. To the degree that people's lives are controlled by money, and since money is the mother's milk of politics, or the oxygen to political fires, there is no practical way to resolve the issues that the monetary systems were already completely corrupted, and those who benefited from doing that now dominate everything.
Those are the reasons how and why American went from relative freedom, to runaway fascism. Tragically, I can not see anything within the established systems which could save them from automatically getting worse, faster ... Indeed, that tragic trajectory is the main topic of discussion in the vast majority of the articles published on Zero Hedge!
The other problem is of course the mass is comfortably numb. For every one perosn risking his/her neck practicing civil disobedient there are 99 people sitting at home watch him/her on TV. The ongoing struggle in Hong Kong is a good example. So I do not see a grass root rebellion in our future. The most people can do is to vent their frustration on the internet.
Alternatively, what about power at the state level, can that be a force against the Federal power ? Can a local uptopia be created ?
"How can anybody else who has to work for their money compete with a group that has ALREADY gained the power to make money out of nothing?"
Indeed and the system cannot be defeated in any conventional way. Salvation lies in the system's inherent instability which should result in the parasite destroying its host. If and when this happens is anyone's guess, but a guiding principle is 'worse is better'.
Fight Orwellian language with Orwellian language?
"Salvation lies in the system's inherent instability which should result in the parasite destroying its host. If and when this happens is anyone's guess, but a guiding principle is 'worse is better'."
You are right, Monty Burns!
Lobbyists. DC has 485 congresscritters-100 Senators. Up to 100,000 and more people whose daily job is to buy them and be sure they stay bought.

Original congressional apportionment was 1:30000; that would give us about 7000 congressmen today-meeting electronically from their district office where you and I can see who is going in and out of their local office. Apportionment was limited in 1894-just in time to kick start the leviathan.
Two easy things to do are to keep congressmen at home in their districts and reform apportionment to original criteria
At the moment NONE of them can afford to work for you and I-under the best circumstances. Under the worst-it may be dangerous to their health.
"When he wrote “1984” back in 1948, [Orwell]probably never imagined that the “totalitarian, bureaucratic world” that he imagined would ever actually become a reality."
The world of 1948, which we see through our rose colored glasses in full "nostalgia-vision", was already a lot like that of 1984. Orwell wasn't really writing about the future, or even about Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany. Rather, his distopian future was a parady on 1948 England - and 1948 America.
Massive government lying? Check.

It was just more possible for an honest person to not see it all. Now we're rapidly losing that luxury, as a dying empire takes off the mask and drops the fig leaves.
Did I hear you say?
It's that kind of thin ice that plunges people right into Room 101 and whatever terrifies the bejesus out of them.
A rat cage on your face or a swarm of black widow spiders nesting under your toilet seat.
Did you summon Orwell with a seance or a Ouija board before you went to press?
Coming up for truth at a time when it is too late.
All the protest conspired at the moment when the consequences hurt - do you think it could not have been forseen.
When we complain about email watching the totalitarian state has set its objectives already further. So that you can complain but nothing happens.
To recognize that we are caged, hopelessly, news to the fact are wellcomed and thus the awakening about can get encouraged.
The enslavement of society once was sold as a progress for society. In the moment it turns sour on you instead just for the others you are too late.
Remember, fist they came...
Don't try to circumnavigate a well consolidated shock therapy.
Orwell was wrong about a lot of things: he made the Jews the oppressed, not the oppressors. Emmanuel Goldstein is the hero of 1984, the big proponent of Freedom. Bardèche’s vision of the future is much truer than Orwell’s, and his book was written a year earlier than Orwell’s.
Maurice Bardèche’s Nuremberg or the Promised Land is a revisionist classic. . . . That anyone in 1948 could have foreseen so accurately our modern world is to me astounding. Bardèche recognized that the judicial travesty at Nuremberg was not simply an act of vengeance by victors against the vanquished and that what was on trial there was not just the particular German defendants, nor the German nation, nor even National Socialism, but rather nationalism itself: the idea that a people own the land that they have long lived in and have the right to live in it as they wish and to exclude others from living in it if they so wish. It is nationalism in any form which was condemned at Nuremberg.
With amazing prescience Bardèche foresaw in its condemnation the coming of an international system which is first and foremost economic, not political or governmental. Its purpose is to protect an international economic élite, not ordinary persons, or peoples, or nations. It offers the latter lots of rights but no guarantees that these rights will be respected. Its laws are unclear (unlike those of a prince) and broadly unenforceable, but the system does not attempt to enforce them broadly but only selectively. For selected victims punishments are severe. Victims are selected not so much because they have broken laws but because they have offended the “universal conscience,” the conscience created and fostered in us all by the media (Bardèche’s “radio”). Bardèche clearly foresaw the system which we today call “globalism,” although he nowhere uses that term. He also foresaw at least implicitly many other aspects of our world: Third World immigration, the irrational glorification of democracy, loss of sovereignty, humanitarian wars and interference, hate crimes, affirmative action, racial miscegenation and replacement, etc.: “At the bottom of the sanctuary there sits a Negro god. You have all the rights, except to speak evil of the god.” “And, from one end of the world to the other, in perfectly similar cities . . . there will live under similar laws a bastard population, a race of indefinable and gloomy slaves, without genius, without instinct, without voice. . . But this will be the Promised Land.”
In 1949, one year after the publication of Nuremberg or the Promised Land, another prophetic book was published, George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In it Orwell describes a scary future in which there is a single party dictatorship, living conditions are drab, food is scarce, people’s thoughts are openly controlled by Big Brother, their words and actions are monitored through “telescreens” which they cannot turn off, they are given no choice over what they view on these screens, there is only one channel on the “telescreens” and one film (always a war film) in the theatres, in one such film refugees trying to escape are shot to the delight of the audience, some of these refugees are Jewish, “the Enemy of the People” is a Jew, Emmanuel Goldstein, who is condemned for “advocating freedom of speech, freedom of the Press, freedom of assembly, freedom of thought,” people are openly taught to hate him and his followers during “Two Minutes Hate” and “Hate Week,” sex is discouraged through a “Junior Anti-Sex League,” the Inner Party is called the “Inner Party,” thoughtcrime is called “thoughtcrime,” Thought Police are called “Thought Police,” the media propagate obvious, self-contradictory lies such as: “War Is Peace,” “Freedom Is Slavery,” “Ignorance Is Strength,” people are told that democracy is “impossible” (although the Party is said to be its “guardian”), capitalism is viewed as a barbarity that has “vanished.”
The world described in 1984 little resembles that in the Occident today. We live in multi-party democracies. Our mainstream media tell us not only that democracy is possible and a very good thing, but that its triumph everywhere is virtually inevitable, an inevitability which we should make every effort to encourage. Living conditions are generally good, food is abundant. Capitalism is alive and well and is promoted as an economic panacea. Our politicians advocate the same things as does Emmanuel Goldstein. Our media propagate obvious lies such as: “Diversity is our strength,” but they at least avoid flagrant self-contradictions (some kinds of diversity may indeed be a source of strength, although certainly not the radical ethnic diversity that our media promote). Refugees do not flee our societies, but rather risk their lives trying to get into them. We are not taught to hate, but to tolerate. Sex is not generally discouraged, even among the young. With our multi-channel televisions and the internet we are free to see, hear, read, and discuss almost anything, if not everywhere. Freedom reigns. Yet to some that freedom seems, if not illusory, useless. It is useless because people’s thoughts and actions are monitored and controlled not by anything outside themselves but by their own warped consciences, consciences deliberately warped by our mainstream media, consciences closely resembling Bardèche’s “universal conscience.”
Orwell’s and Bardèche’s books have had quite different careers in the Occident. Orwell’s, although formerly banned in the Soviet Union, has been widely read and praised; Bardèche’s is still banned in France and is generally unknown elsewhere. 1984 has served to warn us against the dangers of Communism, and for that deserves acclaim. But one cannot help but wonder if its general acclaim today is not also an index to its irrelevance. We have escaped the dreadful future envisioned by Orwell in 1984. We have not escaped the dreadful future envisioned by Bardèche in 1948.
Bardèche says that his “only ambition, in writing this book, was to be able to read it again without shame in fifteen years.” My ambition, in translating it, was much more grandiose: I hope to hear it read some day without shame on TV by a politician. Bardèche wrote this book for the sake of the German “reprobates,” whom “the radios of all the people of the world, and the presses of all the people of the world, and millions of voices from all the horizons of the world” characterize as “monsters.” I have translated it also for the sake of “reprobates,” those nationalists throughout the Occident whom all our radios and presses and millions of voices likewise characterize as little better than “monsters.”

Great post. I agree that Bardesche was the most brilliant and prescient of the three authors concerned. And Huxley's grim prophesy was in fact more accurate than that of Orwell who was narrowly focused on Soviet-stye dictatorship whereas as we know ours is much more subtle than that.
In the layer of enforcement - it will only get worse if conviction rate on police stays close to zero. They commit severe crime, manage to get away with clean slate and frequently even punish the victim again in court. They are well armed, have special private line of communication and thousands of allies one call away. It's the perfect gang. Why in hell would they ever just go back to their nominal roles?
Very presumptious of you. He perhaps could see where we were headed even back then, hence why he wrote the book?
When I was waaay back there in grade school, you know before they understood the importance of teachin about putting condoms on bananas, this is what we were taught....he could see what the world could devolve into based on current trends, etc.
Then again, the 'founders' saw it and wrote a pretty good treatise on how to avoid all this....it was called the constitution. But, seems nowadays teaching kids 'life choices' is more important than teaching about freedom.
Ho well.
EDIT: Couldn't up arrow you, weird....could do other folks...but not your comment. Big brother is watching I guess....
to me 84 was just a reminder of what his world was in his time, disguised in a roman with love story to get appropriate cover.
the message of the book is clear in the last sentence " he finally loved big brother "
meaning, be like others, love the way it is and nobody will hurt you. if you mess with the system, prepare accordingly.
this is exactly what is h24 happening worldwide, let's be honnest.
i got an exemple with police seizure if they ask you about cash money, you tell em you loose it...
1) why you tell em you got cash
2) why you know it is forbbiden/risky to go with cash, then keep going...
3 why dont you fedex you own cash inside objects/box...
problem is not to be pro or con system, systme is what is is, you know how it works, your choice to fight it front, or to get around. but do not come and whine coz you try but get busted....
i'm sorry but.. that's how life works, always was and always will be.
I like M Snyder's article, they're very pedagogic.
What a surprise! This is the destiny of the WASP world - bringing everything to absurd until it blows up.
NSA is very Matrix worthy.
Since people are for the most part good, the police and alphabet agencies have to create an ever increasing number of so called criminal to keep their gravy train going.
Without bad guys, they have no power and are out of a job... and so in the process they seemingly become addicted to being criminals themselves.
Maybe if they went after the real criminals in banking, government and such they would be doing something worthwhile. Sadly they do not.
Neil Postman, who passed away in 2003 was an American author, a professor at NYU, and cultural critic, best known for his book about television, Amusing Ourselves to Death. He once made an interesting contrast between two books that I'm sure everyone has heard of. You probably read at least one of them when you were in high school. That one is 1984 by George Orwell, written in 1949, and the other is Brave New World written by Aldus Huxley in 1932. I read 1984 when I was in high school. It was quite ominous, since the Soviet threat was very real. Now the Soviet threat has gone, and I think Huxley should be of greater concern for us today than Orwell.
Postman observed:
· Orwell feared with those who would ban books.
o Huxley feared that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.
· Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information.
o Huxley feared those who would give us so much information that we would drown in it. The Internet!!!
· Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us.
o Huxley feared the truth would be lost in a sea of irrelevance.
· Orwell feared we would become a captive culture like the Soviets.
o Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture.
· Orwell feared a society controlled by inflicting pain.
o Huxley feared a society controlled by inflicting pleasure.
· Orwell gave us a “Big Brother,” and external oppressor.
o Huxley showed us how we would come to love “Big Brother” because “Big Brother” will make our lives comfortable.
When the American Caesar emerges (and maybe he or she already has), I think he will take his cues from Huxley, not Orwell.
tjp
So, will the next America Caesar take his cues from Orwell, Huxley, or a mixture of both? Yeap, let's talk extensively about that, should we? There's a Chinese proverb that says, "When the sage points at the moon, the fool looks at the sage's finger."
Here, the sages are Orwell and Huxley, but you can carry on not looking at what they're pointing to muse over who of the two will win. Your choice. Quote, "Huxley feared the truth would be lost in a sea of irrelevance."
What's your point?
Yawn, hey anyone watch the game last night?
"So is there any hope that we will wake up, or will our society continue to march toward oblivion?"
As long as the government continues to produce and support (with money from our paychecks) the free shit crowd we don't stand a chance. Once the free shit crowd no longer gets their free shit even they will not stand for the continual erosion of our rights and freedoms.
You see there is no real motivation to bite the hand that feeds you.
Correct. The only thing capable of bringing down the current degenerate system is the curtailing of FSA goodies and a critical mass of lower middle class Whites falling into poverty. As long as there's bread and circuses the frog will continue to boil.

Orwell’s vision has come true. Today’s schools are Orwell’s “central London hatching factory” producing liberal bone-head students dedicated to big government…
Huxley was mostly concerned that evolving technologies would be used to control the masses. He felt that democracy was most susceptible to these kinds of controls. At that point he was worried that the creeping concentration of sources of “control” would be utilized by social oligarchs to form opinions. Remember, these two, Orwell and Huxley were British Citizens well aware of situations not known or understood by the American public. Things like the Frankfurt School.
Few realize that the educated of today are unwittingly products of the Frankfurt School, as are all students: especially since the 60’s. The educated Boomers are the forebears of what some call 'cultural Marxism,' which is a radical social movement that has transformed Western (American) culture into the hyphenated polyglot it currently is. It is more commonly known today as 'political correctness': a phrase lifted directly out of Marxism. Those pursuing Social Science Degrees, are actually educated under the Frankfurt School Curriculum. That curriculum has a name: Critical Theory.
In 1923, Marxist intellectuals associated with the Communist Party of Germany founded the Institute of Social Research at Frankfurt University in Frankfurt, Germany. The Institute, which became known as the Frankfurt School, was modeled after the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow. In 1933, when Nazis came to power in Germany, the members of the Frankfurt School fled. Most came to the United States and many became influential in American universities. The Frankfurt School’s studies combined Marxist analysis with Freudian psychoanalysis to form the basis of what became known as “Critical Theory.”
It is basically a system of beliefs, attitudes and values called “Political Correctness, which aims to impose a uniformity of thought and behavior on all Americans. It is the bible of the “thought police” whereby conformity is imposed and is therefore totalitarian in nature. It is the Marxification of culture, rather than the economy. It still is Marxism! Furthermore, it is precisely what George Orwell warned against in “1984”.
The theory is that cultural hegemony is the means to class dominance, with the upper class exploiting the lower classes; which Cultural Marxism is intended to rectify or more accurately: exploit. Economic Marxism which, according to Frankfurt School, failed due to Western culture and Christianity, was to remedy managements power to exploit labor. Christianity is perceived as the reason why workers around the world rejected Communism. In the view of the Critical Theorists, a new “Communist man” was to be created by destroying current culture, before any political revolution was possible. This goal would be accomplished by focusing on the disciplines of intellectuals, education, technology and media. This was all prior to commercial radio(1925), TV(national 1948) and the Internet(WWW/1982). Imagine how advancements in these technologies have aided the distribution and inculcation of ideas advocating radical social change into the minds of the impressionable young.
In the 1958 preface for A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a rather grim portrait of society. He believes it is controlled by an “impersonal force”, ruling elite, which manipulates the population using various methods. Mass communication is a necessary tool to insure the functionality of a large democracy; it is also a necessary tool for a dictatorship. It all depends on its usage.
When you add into the mix of control mechanisms the power of pharmaceuticals as designed today, one has all the necessary accouterments for fewer and fewer persons to control larger and larger masses of people.
It wasn’t so much that they saw the future, as they understood the present at the time they were extrapolating the consequences of WWI and WWII propaganda and goals. These wars were started by very small groups of people with common interests and anti western views. Mostly the dislike of individualism and Christian values.
The watershed moments for America came in the 1960’s. Since then, there is little common ground between what America was and has become. We have become Europe at its worst, for the same reasons Europe became the festering stewpot capable of spawning two world wars.
Huxley was more functionally correct than Orwell, who was more about consequences than the activities which produced them.
All, and I do mean all, of the pathologies destroying Western societies today can be traced back to the Frankfurt School.
Google Prof. Kevin McDonald's Culture Of Critique.
Yeah, it is ironic how necessary it would be to apply critical thinking to the so-called Critical School, which has not done that much to itself!

Yawn - Freedoms are being infringed more these day but the fact that this article is posted and we are commenting shows we are closer to 1969 that 1984
Relax - Aaron Rogers
It's difficult to nail exactly what drives this evil monstrosity of totalitarian/surveillance government that we see emerging in all our western societies.
Is it simply a psychopathic obsession with power, control and wealth? Or is it a much more basic human instinct: "fear" of the mob and a need to maintain surveillance over it lest it goes out of control and revolts?
I think it is the inherent failure of social control through backing up lies with violence to ever be able to stop those lies from still being false. Those systems need to keep the people ruled over ignorant and afraid, which makes any better resolutions of problems practically impossible.
The innate paradox is that the system automatically gets worse, faster, until it destroys itself, because nothing it does ever overcomes its basic problem that enforcing frauds does not stop those from still being fraudulent. The enforced frauds driving the political economy drive everything else towards its own mad self-destruction, due to the paradoxical final effects of more social success through those means driving society as a whole too insane!
The revolutions are NOT caused by the revolutionaries, but rather by the madness of the established systems own self-destruction, which then opens the opportunities for some new systems (which tragically will probably become some new systems of lies backed by violence, developed from the surviving seeds of the old systems.)
