Modern Slavery: It's Not Just For Greek Teachers

Tyler Durden's picture

While forcing citizens to work for no money may appeal to European policy-makers as a solution to their youth unemployment problem (as we discussed here and here), it is a problem that covers a stunning 35.8 million people in the world who are classified as slaves, according to the latest data.

China, India, and Pakistan top the list of modern slave nations (in absolute terms), but Mauritania is the most 'slaved' nation with 4% of the population in some kind of bondage.

As Gallup notes, most modern slavery is not visible to the general public, and victims may not be easy to identify using standard survey methods. Poverty is a clear risk factor behind modern slavery: Poorer countries tend to have more slaves; but a host of other factors may be perpetuating the problem, including traditional institutions, attitudes, social systems or poor governance, as well as individual risk factors such as lack of education or unemployment.

The Walk Free Foundation defines modern slavery as the deprivation of individual liberty for the purpose of exploitation. This broad definition includes many slavery-related practices such as human trafficking, forced labor, debt bondage, forced marriage, commercial sexual exploitation and the sale and exploitation of children.

Walk Free's GSI ranks 167 countries according to the estimated prevalence of modern slavery, using a combination of nationally representative surveys, secondary sources and extrapolation methods that take into account each country's vulnerability to modern slavery.

and it seems European governments are not doing too much about it (the letter grades represent government action)

But it seems Russia and Bahrain are the outliers with relatively high slavery given their wealth...

As Gallup concludes,

Obtaining reliable estimates of the extent of the problem of modern slavery is only the first step in eradicating it. Modern slavery will only end after the systematic causes and consequences of the problem are dealt with. First, victims must be identified and get the support they need to leave their situation. Criminal justice mechanisms need to be reinforced and coordinated to successfully prosecute perpetrators. Global supply chains need to be carefully monitored to avoid labor abuses by contractors and subcontractors.

Unless of course this is the New World Order plan after all... do debt-serfs count?

Here in India I "OWN" 4 slaves. Oh, I know, All you Americans have been conditioned to judge against this. Your Kunta Kinte miracles and such.

Slavery is important and allows those who "HAVE" to utilize those who do "NOT".

You cannot go through life with "ZERO" utility! Slavery gives people a purposeful life.

also if you have any debt...mortgage, student loans, credit card debt, etc.....you sir are a debt slave.

A long held definition of slavery is anyone who has more than 50% of his/her wages taken by a third party without consent.  That makes about 25% of all Americans slaves by definition.

The problem with old fashioned slavery was that the slave owners had to look after the slaves. Modern slavery using debt is better for the slave owners because they do not need to care for their slaves, just load them up with debt and watch the money roll in. What is even better is that we slaves foolishly believe we are free even though the truth is staring us in the face...Apart from the bankster elite almost all of us are modern slaves

A case for corporate sponsorship for local areas through debt forgiveness. A thought exercise.

Costs of doing business include externalities such as instabilities fueled by pressures of growing inequalities of capital, such as civil or other warfare, striking and protests, crime, etc. One way that the vested interests could protect their vested interests could be by the formation of corporate "states" which include their own defense forces. Or the vested interests could come to be brought to see that the causes of such instabilities come in part from income and wealth inequality and the high levels of indebtedness prevalent in the lower wealth percentiles, including large portions of the population with negative real wealth. Increasing levels of indebtedness across a large percentage of the population to fuel growth is obviously unsustainable as a larger and larger share of income is co-opted to pay debt service. By forgiving debt at a local level, debt that in most cases would be owed to the high wealth individual or corporation itself, or else debt obligations that could be purchased on an open market, the high wealth individual or corporation could in effect create an area with a higher average wealth, which would be lower in the instabilities present in low (or negative) net wealth areas. Without anything in the way of my own research, mathematical models or fancy thinking on the matter I can only surmise that a local population suddenly without a large debt service subtracted from their income might actually manage to increase their own productivity and economic growth. Thus the sponsor can create an area of safety not through the employment of mercenary security experts, but by raising the prosperity of a local area.

This to is a form of slavery. But it seems that peonage no longer has a definition in the USSA. Include that lil metric in this data, then let's see where the USSA falls.

When you're in that privatized prison, you can make consumer products for less than a dollar per hour.  Maybe you can supplement your meagre swill with a snack from the overpriced vending machine.  Maybe your "job" will give you hope of enough brownie points to get out early (until they cancel those brownie points over some bullshit infraction).  Maybe when you get out, you they will send you a bill at Hilton prices.  There are many ways to end up there, too.  Like smoking a joint.  Like not paying some ridiculous fine, plus all the administrative fees they will pile on top of it.  America ranking low on slavery doesn't make it Land of the Free.  It just means they call slavery something else, and everyone is cool with it.

Slavery has been a MENA and muslim thing for millenia. There are lots of muslims in India and China, too. Questioning slavery is considered same as questioning Islam. And I don't believe the head-hunting Saudi numbers either, too PC, got to be way higher. They still have high $$ open auctions for white girls.

Muslims invaded Kenya in 800th century and began black slave on dark continent. It was 800 years before Europeans (Vasco De Gama) landed in Kenya and black slave trade was first introduced to Europeans after 1497.

Slavery was still officially legal in many muslim countries couple of decades ago and 'officially' abolished in last couple of countries just a few years back but there is no/little enforcement. And in most places the law abolished new slaves but did not set existing slaves free. Many existing slaves remain slaves to this day and stated intent was to abolish was through attrition over time, but not happening.

War in Darfur between muslim North and non-muslim South ended up with estimated new 1 million black slaves taken to North as war booty where most remain.

This "slave statistics" is nothing but pure hate-Russia lie and evil anti-Russia propaganda.
Simple research reveals many of this sort fake "funds" and "foundation" established in 2013 in obvious preparation for the putsch in Ukraine and the war on Russia and linked to Brookings and other American political and military "think tanks."

Founded in 2013-02-01 and registered in the name of Fergus Hanson, a nonresident fellow in Brookings' Foreign Policy program and the Director of Polling and Research Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney, Australia. Over the years, even prior to the fascist putsch in Ukraine, Fergus Hanson excessively wrote rabid hate-Russia pseudo political analyses.

The saddest thing is you are reading the propaganda that the ruling elite invented for you and actually believe in it. Stupid is as stupid does.

Fergus Hanson, huh?  Look who is a "fellow" at the Brookings Institution!

Fergus Hanson is a nonresident fellow in Brookings’ Foreign Policy program. His research focuses on ediplomacy, Australian foreign ministry reform, and public opinion polling. Hanson previously served as a visiting fellow at Brookings during the winter and spring of 2012. Before joining Brookings, Hanson was program director for polling at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney, Australia

Looks like this guy is trained in exactly the sort of State Department public opinion manipulation known as "ediplomacy" and "public opinion polling".  He graduated Brookings, where he glowingly sucked dick for State (see b-low), and then moved on to this project.  Wonder how that happened.  Hmmmmm, might I gess government contract/grant/payoff?

Check out what he writes about:

eDiplomacy: How the State Department Uses Social Media
Baked in and Wired: eDiplomacy @ State
The History of eDiplomacy at the U.S. Department of State
Internet Freedom: The Role of the U.S. State Department

add to that his hit piece on Snowden:

Foreign Theft of U.S. Intellectual Property After Snowden

Well, with sufficient research, it looks like there are some things that are transparent about this administration.

Slavery will only cease to exist when the productivity of one human, no longer benefits that of another. So guess what? You can either be a slave to yourself, or be a slave for the system. As a collective, we are all too mentally weak to break the ties that bind us. We are also too complacent to stand together, thus we must be prepared to hang separately. Hoping that our comments had meaning, and some generation beyond us finds them. Only then will the ends justify the means.

Parental conditioning is the greatest slavery in the world.

The child is helpless: he depends on the parents. He cannot rebel, he cannot escape, he cannot protect himself. He is absolutely vulnerable; hence he can be easily exploited.

Every child is being enveloped: by the parents, by the society, by the teachers, by the priests, by all the vested interests. Enveloped in many layers of conditioning. He is given a certain religious ideology; it is not his choice.

Society is your parents' writ large. Your parents were nothing but agents of this society.

It is all a conspiracy: The parents, the teachers, the policeman, the magistrate, the president — they are all together.

It is all a conspiracy: They are all holding the future of all children.

– Osho, the book of children, chapter 3

Is that a bit of arrogance you demonstrate, good The9thDoctor?

Or am I just collapsing the wave function and observing the resultant arrogance?

Now I would be taking a most arrogant stance if I claim that you don't own it and make the claim that I am responsible because of how I perceive your arrogance.

Yet I am not that powerful. Are you?

You may be amazed at what ZH commenters don't know. Is that a disparaging or a complimentary statement?

Do you believe in applied psycho-physics? I realize that the terminology may be foreign. (In your case I do not believe so.) But does psychology have an actual connection to the physical world and perception? Can you create? Does what you believe manifest into existence? Is the self fulfilling prophecy a reality and not some Metaphysical hype?

After all when it comes down to the quantum reality we are just an energy field interacts with another energy field. Physics is merely the description of how energy fields interact.

Is your mind an energy field, doctor?

Can you bend spoons with your mind, herr doctor?

As I wrote...I am not powerful. But then maybe there are some whom are.

The very first rule of Quantum Mechanics is to abandon all common sense.

I believe that you are Ivy League because of the method in which you described that you were instructed in the Calculus. (If you cannot derive it then you do not know it...)

Being a slave to someone is one thing, but a far worse thing is to be a slave to your passions, addictions and idiosyncracies.

"estimated prevalence of modern slavery, using a combination of nationally representative surveys, secondary sources and extrapolation methods that take into account each country's vulnerability to modern slavery."

i.e., it's an agenda driven guess.

What a crock.

Though, I see Russia is red (hmmm), so the pro-Putin trolls ought to be crapping themselves here.  Surprised to see this on ZH.

The worst form of slavery (under another human being or organization) is to be a conscripted soldier against your will.

I got news for you. The worst kind of slavery doesn't involve chains and whippings.

They got rid of chattel slavery to make way for wage slavery.

I guess they haven't heard of debt bondage that works so well here. That would make the USA bright red too.

A while back I stumbled upon a blog on WordPress .com written by Gerry Spence who was born and educated in the small towns of Wyoming where he has practiced law for almost fifty-five years. Spence  has spent his lifetime representing and protecting victims of the legal system from what he calls The New Slave Master: big corporations and big government.

Below is part of a post Spence published, he uses the line, "With its endless propaganda the Moneyed Master has caused its slaves to believe they are free." I agree with him, and also contend that while the military-industrial complex is still massive and evil we must now focus on our new worse enemy, in a nut shell we must also watch out for the "Government-Financial Complex".

There is a serious problem with high level organized pedophelia in Israel, Britian and the US that has proved almost impossible to crack.  It is not just pedophelia, many of these children are murdered.   If you haven't seen "The conspiracy of silence" about the US politician pedophile ring (children who are still in prison because they squeeled) you should watch it.  Was only aired in US once by John Walsh because he is the only one who had the nads.  This is not a half baked conspiracy, it is old school real journalism. This story is a graveyard of journalists and nothing ever sticks to these bastards. Warning to those who have trouble with teenagers, many of these children were taken from boys ranches etc.

what people fail to understand is that you have outright slavery like those seen pre 1800's and then you have suitble slavery the kind that so suitable its merely dismissed as "how things have always been". What am i talking about well, you have the slavery where the wealthy own some poor countries bonds and the government of that poor country taxes its citizens severely all to finance those bonds and those wealthy few even richer, this is really no deferrent than a sugar plantation for the 21st century. Other types of slavery are things like being a (good looking) woman in a poor country...they want things and the rich guy who wants to bang them wants "things" as well.  Lest people forget slavery isnt just about being on the wrong side of the stick or whip.

This slave trade is okay ?????????

An Israeli parliamentary report found that thousands of non-Jewish women remain enslaved in Israel's sex industry, and that traffickers go unpunished.

However, with billions of dollars in U.S. aid at stake, the State Dept. says Israel is making "significant efforts" to eliminate human trafficking.
