One Reader's Shocked Response Upon Learning His Health Insurance Cost Just Doubled

Tyler Durden's picture

From a reader

ZH:

My wife and I own a small business and we had previously (in 2013)  been buying health insurance on our own for ourselves and our two kids.  The cost was about six hundred per month with a $5200 deductible, $6800 total out of pocket exposure for the family of four.

After spending months trying to register for the ACA in late 2013 and early 2014 my kids got put on our state's insurance (at "no cost") and my wife and I bagged an ACA policy at a subsidized cost of $281 per month with a total out of pocket of about $6500 (just for the two of us).

Attached is the ACA notification of next year's price increase.  As you can see the cost goes from $281 to $555, a monthly increase of $274, a percentage increase of 97%.

Basically we are now paying the same amount for the two of us that we paid for all four of us one year ago.

How can that increase occur in a "free market" economy?  Did I miss something? Has some input cost leaped exponentially in order to double the price I pay? Or has private industry colluded with government to rig the markets (again) in their favor?

How much longer will the American people allow corporations to rip them off in collusion with the government?  Fuck this bogus economy and government captured by corporations.  Where is the leader who will rise up from the masses and snuff out the corp/govt nexus before it imprisons us all in debt serfdom police state?

Do you think for one minute that freaking Mitch McConnell, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner or anyone newly elected or previously elected cares one shit about my wife and kids or what we pay for crappy health care that we cannot afford to access due to high deductibles?  Those fucks cannot see beyond the next donor phone call, and only come clucking out of the hen house in order to give voice to the latest party certified political meme, be it 'freedom', 'liberty', 'security" or some other hollowed out focus group tested bullshit sound bite.

If you don't like your Country, you'll still be stuck with it (notice the very rapidly rising "costs" associated with relinquishment of US citizenship?)

Your Country REALLY likes your ability to pay its taxes, no matter where you are employed. And your Country fully intends to ensure you continue to pay those taxes as a Good Little Citizen, whether you  like it or not.

How long before revocation of citizenship becomes banned under "Security Grounds" or similar twaddle??

At present, you cannot relinquish US Citizenship to avoid taxes.  While you may get through a relinquishment ceremony without them catching on to you on that point (you need to affirmatively deny it), if you apply for a visa at any future point, they can deny you the visa on the basis that you relinquished to avoid taxes.

And the author wonders "How can that increase occur in a 'free market' economy?  Did I miss something?"

Apparently he missed the fact that health insurance is not part of the free market economy. Indeed, nothing government touches can remain part of the free market economy.

Lastly, perhaps I missed it: did he sign up with a state plan or the Federal one? Might he lose his subsidy via the SCOTUS?

Yes, a fine example of ethics & morals in shifting the cost burden of your childrens health insurance off onto others as you and your wife get further .gov subsidization on another lane of the ObamaCare Super Slyway.

When has anyone ever sent you the bill? That's what liberals state. Don't ever forget this.

We all pay our own freight. I never asked anyone to pay shit for me. Including you. I ain't the enemy. If costs had been contained 30 years ago, we wouldn't be having the conversation. So don't buy into the socialist rhetoric that you are paying for me.

Third parties should never have been allowed to intervene in any billing practice. The system worked fine when the checks were disbursed to the insured. This caused some scrutiny and cost containment. We didn't pay for lobbysists, 20 year patent protection monopolies, malpractice gougers, lawyers ad nauseum, etc., etc.

Am I responsible for all that shit too?

What does negotiating & buying your own health insurance (or not) have to do with being forced to pay taxes?

You've bought into the statist-model that because you've been stolen from by .gov its perfectly fine to steal as much as you can from someone else, using .gov to do it.

Do you notice anything unique about this model? Thats right, .gov is the weapon of choice, its used both ways, to steal & steal back. Quite a racket.

Don't fall into the trap, save your integrity, fight to stop it.

Glycerin can be bought at any Wal Mart Pharmacy. It is cheap.

Nitric Acid is available at your Jewelry Supply. (Reminds me...I have got to mix up some Aqua Regia for some Gold Refining...)

Sulfuric Acid is available at your local Auto Parts Store.

All can be bought with cash.

Make sure that you do not mix these chemicals together or store them together.

If they mix then you will get a Nitro Glycerin explosion. You cannot be too careful. By all means be safe. Use gloves and protective gear as these acids are very corrosive to organic material...ie...your flesh.

All that Tyler did IN THE MOVIE was to skin the Glycerin from the fat while making the soap. But you do not have to make soap.

There's no point blowing stuff up. It just doesn;t work and TPTB are ready for that and probably expect it. They will win that fight because that is who they are, evil mother fuckers who get their way at the end of a gun.

What if everyone just withdrew consent, more and more, starving the beast of money. Alternatively just apply for credit cards, max them out by purchasing gold and default on the borrowed money. I dount it would take too many people doing this to bankrupt the Citi's, BOA's etc and at the same time put pressure on the price of gold. If enough people did it it would swamp the system and the ability of these organisations to even track down the defaulters.

The system will blow, everyone will default anyway and not a bullet need be fired. The achillies heal of the system is assuming the good little serfs (indoctrinated with christian niceness) will never break the law and do such a thing. Well, fuck them.

Do you see even but for a moment the catch-22 of a religion like christianity and scaring people into behaving. It's great and all to have a nice and civilised society with obedient and well behaved serfs but it will eventually give rise to super criminals, super sociopaths and super psycopaths. The universe throws some real curve balls at us humans.

Instead he bitches, pays the increase and waits for someone else to say fuck it for him and make his life comfortable once more. The ugly truth is he hasn't seen anything yet, and the longer he goes along to get along the harder it will become to exit the system. I will not be taking 6k or more per year away from my family and give it to an insurance company and still have to pay out of pocket for medical services. No fucking way.....

All  you Yanks are bitching about your insurance/medical system and how much you pay for both the insurance and the out of pocket.

Why not opt out? (yes, I know you are forced to select a policy, so just pick the cheapest and don't use it except for catastrophe emergencies)

Then with the money you save just fly to another country and combine your vacation with your annual physical, your annual dental and your annual stocking up on prescriptions. Get any elective repairs (hip, knee, laser eye etc) done at the same time.

You get a holiday, you save heaps on insurance and co pays and best of all you are starving the US medical system.

I'm sure someone will post a scaremonging horror story of foreign "butchers" but that same shit can happen anywhere. And as half the nurses and many of the doctors in the US are already foreigners it is just the same care (and staff) but a nicer location.

Might even make sense for American doctors sick of the paperwork and public patients to move to a nice location and run a hospital for medical tourism.

Happened to me too! My $1250 Deducable with a $15M cap, had a yearly cost about $4200 and lots of lots of services coverage (ie out-of-network doctor visits) and no restrictions on prescriptions.

Last year because of ACA, my deductable increased to $6K and the premiums for the year ncreased to about a $7200. There is no longer a cap because as soon as the medical costs exceed the cost of the yearly premiums, the monthly premiums increase to match the medical costs. ACA is not really insurance, ACA just provides the the ability to get care in the event of emergency (ie membership card). For 2015, my deductable rises to about $6500, and my yearly premiums have increased to about $7500 per year. The 2015 plan also eliminates about half a page of items that were previous covered in 2013 (such as common lab tests) and lots and lots of new restrictions (which means the deductiable is much higher than stated).

The only thing I got going is that I am healthy and really have no need for medical services (although that can change in blink because of all the milleniuals texting while driving - several of near collisions this year!)

Heads up: If you need any significant medical procedures done, get the insurance company to pay the costs before undergoing services. A family member of mine had to get surgery, in June. The insurance provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of TX approved the procedure, but failed to pay the bill (later refusing to pay it). Fortunately, his wife had him covered under her corp. plan as secondary coverage and ended up picking up the costs.

I laugh my ass off everytime I see these stories now... it used to be depressing, now I just don't give a fuck.

Here's MY insurance plan: For me, my wife and my kids, I shell out a grand total of $7k a year which gets me $0 copay $0 deductible to all the best private hospitals, free preventative care and checkups, imported drugs (for free when needed) and like $300 a day in "allowance" for inpatient care.  This is global coverage including emergency care in the US and airlifts.  After 15 years of premiums I get back the balance of unused premium in my choice of permanent life insurance, cash, college money or a mix with interest.  After 25 years it can be rolled into an annuity or again, cash out or better life insurance.

I can walk into the best facilities in the world, get VIP treatment, pay nothing, and owe nothing.  $7k a year.  No gimmicks, no catches, no bullshit with trying to deny claims.  Fuck the US.

The serfs will pay the price, while the fat cats get fatter. The ACA was passed into law March 23rd, 2010.

Check out Humana's stock price appreciation since 2010, up from $45 to $139 per share.

If that doesn't tell you who the law was written to benefit, I don't know what will.

As subsidies are removed, premiums will rise causing healthy people to exit the system, causing premiums to rise more the next year, etc. Eventually only really unhealthy people will remain and premiums will be astronomical.

As each round of premium increases hits, Obamacare is likely to become a festering wound for the Dems. Which is precisely why the Repubs have no incentive to eliminate it. That and most of them are just as much slaves of Big Medicine as the Dems.

Afterwards fly up to New York and visit Wall Street. I hear that the New York Stock Exchange is a wonderful place to go. The New York Federal Reserve Bank is also a nice place.
