One Reader's Shocked Response Upon Learning His Health Insurance Cost Just Doubled

My wife and I own a small business and we had previously (in 2013)  been buying health insurance on our own for ourselves and our two kids.  The cost was about six hundred per month with a $5200 deductible, $6800 total out of pocket exposure for the family of four. 

After spending months trying to register for the ACA in late 2013 and early 2014 my kids got put on our state's insurance (at "no cost") and my wife and I bagged an ACA policy at a subsidized cost of $281 per month with a total out of pocket of about $6500 (just for the two of us).

Attached is the ACA notification of next year's price increase.  As you can see the cost goes from $281 to $555, a monthly increase of $274, a percentage increase of 97%. 

Basically we are now paying the same amount for the two of us that we paid for all four of us one year ago.

How can that increase occur in a "free market" economy?  Did I miss something? Has some input cost leaped exponentially in order to double the price I pay? Or has private industry colluded with government to rig the markets (again) in their favor?

How much longer will the American people allow corporations to rip them off in collusion with the government?  Fuck this bogus economy and government captured by corporations.  Where is the leader who will rise up from the masses and snuff out the corp/govt nexus before it imprisons us all in debt serfdom police state?

Do you think for one minute that freaking Mitch McConnell, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner or anyone newly elected or previously elected cares one shit about my wife and kids or what we pay for crappy health care that we cannot afford to access due to high deductibles?  Those fucks cannot see beyond the next donor phone call, and only come clucking out of the hen house in order to give voice to the latest party certified political meme, be it 'freedom', 'liberty', 'security" or some other hollowed out focus group tested bullshit sound bite.

You are correct, as the Republican votes to repeal were mainly an electoral strategy much like the Democrats "opposition" to the Iraq war than won them many seats in '06 and '08 as well as the presidency in '08.  The faux left/right divide is part of what keeps the system in place.

This is really risky, but what I've done since 2009 is to just clean up my act. Primarily with eating healthy foods, maintaining a Vitamin D3 level of 85, exercise and low stress.

 

I had two cancers, one in 2004 the second in 2006, with first individual health insurance and then employer sponsored health insurance. With both types of insurance they covered the bills. I am not one of Michael Moore’s “victims.”

 

My point? I am 60 years old and currently have no health insurance. I did have an individual policy until December 2013, when it was cancelled. And I will not pay any tax for 2014 for not having insurance because I do not have a tax refund.

 

I do not want this “health insurance” anyway. Which is really “medical insurance.” I do not want their “medical care.”

 

I choose to promote my own health, as I am actively doing.

If you have income, you will pay a penalty for not having health insurance. Whether you get a refund or not doesn't matter.  Thought I'd give you a heads up, because come April the IRS will not care that you didn't know.

I agree with most comments here on what's behind the ACA, the politics and corporatism, etc., but it is what  is. I suggest the author and anyone else hit by huge premium increases to shop around for a different company. Just like home and auto, they will jack it up on you if you don't switch sometimes.

As for me and any other corporate drones contemplating early retirement I suggest deferring as little income as possible, take more cash and pay more tax on it now. Upon early retirement, draw no more than 138% of poverty level from 401(k)'s and IRA's and go on Medicaid as the ACA removed asset limits for it. More doctors than the corporate MSM lead you to believe take Medicaid, with little or no out-of-pocket expense. However, if you live or remain in a red state you may be SOL.

It's ok to complain, but I've seen too many people spend all their time angry and complaining rather than educating themselves on how to survive in this brutal system of ours.

The .GOV sanctioned Rip-Off has been going strong for over 100 years so don't hold your breath on any change. Repealing Obamacare will not make a difference - every Act since 1913 including Constitutional Amendments will need to be repealed to return to any real freedom.

I know we are getting it in the rear with health insurance but how many have received regular increases in their home insurance?  Mine goes up about $200 a year and they say it is because of flooding here and there or fires, or what ever.

I am an ex-patriot living in Canada at the 'moment'. I pay for a family of 4, my wife and two kids, it is less than $400. a month for the entire family and covers everything, no extra charges for hospital care. I do have extended benefits built into the $400 a month I already pay and I pay no extra costs for prescription meds, eye care and glasses, upto $5000 a year for dental care. My daughter broke her arm this summer, I took her to the emergency room at our local hospital, x-rays, casting, the doctors and follow up visits cost me nothing extra. The doctors are good, our family doctor is great, the service at the local hospitals is good and I don't have anything to bitch about.

Just go without insurance. Why fork over $7k? It's a monthly expiring put option on your health. It is the most expensive way to procure healthcare services. The worst bill you'll get from a hospital is like $40k. Tell them you have no money to pay them.

Or pay them with the money you've saved from not buying the put option. In 3 years, you'll be able to self-insure.

If you get cancer, then get insurance. They can't deny you. Until then, you're fine.

If SS is not bankrupt by the time I retire, I plan on collecting it for as long as I keep breathing. I've been forced to pay into it for 40 years now.

If at any time, however, the Federal Goverment wants to offer me a lump-sum payout plus interest, I'll take that as long as I no longer have to contribute into the system.

Last I heard, stealing is a crime.  If you make a law to steal from citizens, you are guilty of stealing, whether you have a law supporting you or not.

What good is insurance with those kinds of deductibles and premiums which are causing people to get sick from the stress of paying the stupid things?

I am all for helping those out who try but cannot find work or are physically or mentally incapable of making enough to survive in a dignified manner.

I am against having people steal from me to support wars in foreign lands against people who I do not know.

I am against corporate monopolies support by government in keeping their monopolies.

I am against government bail outs.

I would like small business and farmers to make a come back.

I am against paying money to spy on me.

I do not think violence is the answer.

I do think passive resistance in large numbers will turn this around.

I believe too many people are too scared to participate in passive resistance.  I say this from experience after going public decades ago, having my picture plastered in newspapers and the news media questioning me and me being made out to be some half wit radical, when I objected to Canada borrowing $75 Million from Japan and giving it to India for 'humanitarian' purposes.  I have no trouble with 'humanitarian' purposes as I knew people were starving over there, however the $75 Million went toward the construction of an atomic weapon, not for food.  That is when I drew the line and advertised I would no longer be responsible for any further debts incurred by any government in Canada.  People used to come up to me and say it was about time somebody did something. 

In the end I stood alone.

If it ever came down to doing something that mattered, such as saying no to .gov, I am confident most of the people commenting here would quietly disappear.  That is the way it is.  They are scared to lose what they have.

I want it to end, all of it to end (That sounds suicidal), I don't want money I earned (directly, indirectly or otherwise) to go towards bombing people in faraway countries to keep a few weaponmakers rich. I don't want money I earned to go towards keeping an eye on the rest of us. At least 90% of what I understand as tax revenue is unfatomable to me, bullshit to keep a system of death destruction and disfunction alive. What possible reason would I have to support it?

Legally (Dubiously so, an argument for another day) I am supposed to "support it" with my money. Well money is a fiction too, a figment of a figment of something that used to mean something and that everybody still tells you means something.

You want to get out? No money, at least the way it is understood now. Any other answer is BS.

What probably happened is that the household income for this family was lower last year (their premiums were subsidized.)  Their income probably went up this year, above the subsidy level, and their premiums are no longer subsidized.

BTW, for the record, i hate Ocare.  But that is probably what happened to this family.

Reminds me of this joke...

A man goes into the hospital for a vasectomy. Before the procedure, a rather attractive nurse comes in and takes his vitals, then tells him to take all of his clothes off. When he is fully undressed, she instructs him to lie down on the table. The man obeys.

The health care cartel does not care if you don't like the rates and neither does government or the insurance industry. If you don't want to pay cartel pricing you can go elsewhere. In CANADA we have universal health care

with requisite wait times that keep increasing. People die waiting for health care in CANADA and government are not funding health care as they should be funding it. No health care system in the world actually works well

and if you cannot afford health care you should plan on not getting sick, SUCKERS.

Problem is, for a lot of things, you can't go elsewhere, take workmans comp for example . . .  there is no competition its a monopoly, they just keep jacking the rate up 5~20% at a time (doesn't even make sense) they just increase it as much as possible, really . . . it's a complete scam.

'No health care system in the world actually works well'

Actually I kind of like the Australian one,I pay $140 a month and I'm covered for just about everything, deductible $500 for any serious op, Has a huge Dental component, which is why its quite pricy, I have bad teeth, the $500 deductable does not apply to dental work, I can have a couple of crowns a year and I'll probably only be out of pocket $200 dollars.

A mate of mine just had both knees reconstructed, cost to him zero dollars and that includes all the physio afterwards.

The free healthcare is very good as well, people complain about it, but its universal here and I have lived in NZ where the free healthcare is a lot worse. Aussies are just very spoiled and used to the good life, cant blame them though, it is good here.

I live in Canada. Wait times for most surgeries have been falling, not rising. Is our system as good as the US's USED TO BE (if you had coverage)? No. However, I spent a year working for Blue Cross in Detroit back in the 90's; this is what I learned:

  1. US employers before ACA could use health care like a leash to chain workers to jobs. The people wouldn't leave because they were afraid if they took a new job (or took too long to find one), they might be (pick one of): denied insurance due to a pre-existing condition, forced into a HMO, or forced to pay much higher deductibles, co-pays, and premiums. This is a true story: woman I worked with (late 40's, divorced, 2 kids still at home) had been with Blue Cross for 25 years. By HR standards, she was entitled to 5 weeks vacation per year. She was allowed to take only two, since her manager, a joyless spinster, only took two weeks, and wouldn't approve any more. "Why don't you complain to HR?" I asked. She said "If Hagatha finds out I went behind her back, she'll make life miserable for me, or even fire me". "Why don't you find another job?" I asked. "Benefits" she said "Here, I get complete coverage, no HMO; if I left, I would never get that kind of coverage elsewhere". She may have been right or wrong; it doesn't matter. In her mind, and I'm sure the minds of many, standing up for her rights was denied to her by fear of losing her health care benefits. 
  2. Canadian health care, ostensibly "one tier", is in fact two tiered. My mother-in-law needed a knee replacement  She went through her Windsor GP and the process took nearly two years. Two years after that, she needed the other knee done. I complained to a Toronto friend (a banker), and he said "Oh, I know a guy". In two weeks, she had an appt. with a respected Toronto ortho, and in four months, had her new knee. The thing in Canada is it's what Rand called the 'politics of pull' - if you know the right people, you get to skip the lines. Canada's so-called 'elites' love this - they get privileged access to the system without having to pay an extra dime. 
  3. Canada's system works reasonably well. Last year, I noticed my belly button was inflamed and sore; doc thought it was probably nothing but might be an umbilical hernia, so to be safe, he sends me to Emergency at a downtown hospital. I was seen, got a scan, and home in less than two hours. (Best thing - belly button was fine, but they saw a mass near my appendix, and they scheduled a surgery to remove that. turned out it was benign, but still...)
  4. Cdn healthcare is not as expensive as US healthcare (before ACA, and doubtless after ACA as well). Depending on which site you view, Canada spends 8-10% of GDP on healthcare; the US spends 14-18%. Meanwhile, Cdn life expectancy is 81.1 vs 78.5 in the US (OECD data). Even at age 65, Cdn women can expect to live an extra year over US women (CDC, NHS stats) which strips out the effect of so many more murders in the US of young men. So, even though we spend less, our ultimate outcome is a bit better (not a lot, but I'll take the extra year!). 
  5. To some extent, the entire world is a 'free rider' on the US system. Most new drugs and procedures are developed in the US under your for-profit system, Canada had for many years a 'compulsory licensing' program that allowed copycat (generic) drug makers to start making and selling patented drugs long before the patents expired. This ended in Canada with NAFTA and WTO challenges, with a few expections. However, the principle that the rest of the world waits for the US (and to some extent, Europe) to spend the money on R&D, and the excruciating approvals, only to copy it as soon as possible, is still working. 

I don't think the ACA is a good thing at all - it's another example of crony-socialism. It's going to raise costs and reduce services, neither of which is good. 

Canada's system isn't perfect by any means, but if I had to choose between it and the ACA? It's Canada all the way baby!

The Fed govt in the USA doesn't have the authority to do half the things it does.  The way our Constitution works is that it tells the govt what it CAN do, not what it CAN'T.  This means that if the authority isn't spelled out in the document, then we need to vote on an amendment, which never happens.

Mandated healthcare is not in the Constitution and in fact the 10th says:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. 

The 9th. says:

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.  

and the 16th. says:

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

So since healthcare is not "income" it cannot be a tax and is since it is not also mandated in the Constitution it is Unconstitutional. As for enforcement, the Constitution is not silent on that either. Article 3, Section 3 says: Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. And that is why they are so desperate to get our arms, even going so far as to create false-flags as an excuse.

With respect, that is not possible, as the Constitution prohibits non-apportioned direct taxes TWICE.

Once in Article 1, Section 1, Clause 3:

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers,..

and again in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 4:

No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or Enumeration herein before directed to be taken.

And it is not possible because the Constitution is still the "Law of the Land."

And because, Article 2, Section 1 says:

All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.

And Article 1, Section 8, Clause 18 says:

The Congress shall have Power ... To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

They can make all the legal machinations they like, but if they are unlawful, and Unconstitutional means just that, they carry no weight of law.

Dont feel bad pal, two years ago I was paying $459 per month for a family of three with $3000 deductible, last year was $689 per month under Obummercare with $6,000 deductible.  Received my renewal notice today, $737 per month with $6,000 deductible next year.  When it hits $1,000 per month, I'm going to pull all my cash out of the bank, structure assets so they are protected under bankruptcy, and cancel the policy.  Then if something bad happens, I'll just default on the medical bills.  The government can come and try to get the IRS penalty out of me........

They're a self-pay organization for Christians that exempts you from Obamacare and the IRS penalty tax, like the Amish and Muslims can do. You can pick a deductable as low as 500/yr and they have group, and family plans, etc., too. And once you meet your deductable it pays 100%, no co-pays!

Plans are extremely affordable and works same as any other PPO:participating physicians on a nationwide online list; you are issued a PPO membership card; and, you choose your doctors and hospitals. Also, covers you worldwide. CCM has been around for 20 years and, I believe, already covers well  over one million people. Membership is growing very fast now and the phone people were all excellent and extremely nice!

Example rates: A 55 yo male would pay about $185/mo with a small $500 deductable, and only about $137/mo with a $10,000 deductable. 

Drawbacks: They don't take smokers and don't cover your pre-existing conditions. If you're grossly overweight costs you more, but they have plans to help you lose weight to get into optimal range so you can qualify for their lowest premiums.

That is why it is a drawback. If you have multiple medical problems this is not for you. If not, then sign up before you get sick, that's why it's called insurance.

 

It's a shared expense organization so, of course, it's not only legal, it exempts you from the IRS penalty for non-conforming plans that would otherwise force the plan to pay for things like Chaz Bono's sex change, so premiums can stay low. 

Why should people with healthy lifestyle choices be penalized and be forced to reward and subsidize free rides for the gangbangers, druggies, and brain dead liberals? That's not fair.

And why do people wait until they're sick or falling apart to rush out to try and sign up for healthcare just so they can make the other people pay? That's not fair.

And giving Obamacare to illegal aliens means many US citizens will go without, or, to the back of the line for healthcare. That's not fair, either.

The insurance business has countless ways of separating people from their money and it is not just with medical insurance. Life insurance owners beware! Over thirty-two years ago after our marriage my wife decided to buy a "whole life" policy on me. She had some cash at the time and decided to help out her brother who was a new salesman with MetLife, also with a young family and baby. He moved on to other employment a few years later. She paid 10G upfront for the policy and would not have to make any payments for some time. I considered this entirely her business and her money.
    About twenty odd years later my wife took ten thousand dollars out of the policy in order to pay back property taxes. Her understanding was that the remaining money in the account would cover payments until the policy coverage lapsed, which was ok with her. Last tax year a 1099-R came in the mail from MetLife which stated we had untaxed income on $38,000! We never received a nickle from MetLife but now owe almost $6000 income tax. This does not seem possible and the logic defies me, but there is some law that says we must pay tax on $38000 that we never received. Who got the money? WTF???

Sounds like the policy was surrendered for cash value.  Have you contacted the issuer?  They may be holding the funds for you, or they may have been remitted to the state.  And if that's the case, there could be a time when it will escheat unclaimed and you won't be able to recover it.

Yes we contacted MetLife. They simply said they understood that was not what we wanted to hear, but the 1099-R was correct, even though we never received any money. This was done through their online email system. I look at it this way. We "invested" $10,00 for 32 years. We "withdrew" the $10,000 after approximately 29 years. We "received" life insurance coverage on me for a number of years. We now owe $6000 in taxes. I had a tax guy do our taxes for once last year because of this, and he concurred we owed the money, but couldn't explain to me why.

Gruber is correct: peopel are not capable of critical thinking at all, and are fucking stupid.  Apparently this is a world-wide phenomena, not just the US.

Put out a simple fix (like you suggest) to a complex problem...and people will fall for it.

If you created your national plan today, it would be just as corrupt as the USA plan is.

They can do it because:

1) They did this decades ago before Corporatism arose

2) They don't have massive immigracion from an adjacent hemisphere that does not pay

3) They don't have laws that penalise those in country but favour those who move in legally or illegally

4) They are small nations that are linguisitically, ethnically, racially and ideologically homogeneous.

Australia has an economy the size of Tejas'...and there are 49 other states, DC, PR and the 4 territories...

Stop prefunding their pensions and 50% of the post office problem is gone.  Then raise postal rates to reflect true inflation numbers, not the cooked ones.  Also fire a lot of their overpaid minions / Union people; of course that's a powerful voting block.

My policy was from what migrated from Blue Cross/Blue Shield to an Obama policy, because my old plan, although better, and with lower deductibles, didn't meet the gov "standards". I just received a table similar to the one posted here to renew my Obama policy.  Changes include HIGHER out of pocket maximums and a rate increase.  My increase for the upcoming Obama policy renewal is 9.58 times higher than what I've been paying.

I for one am waiting to see how my insurance rates are going to change in the new year. When working as a contractor over the past 5+ years, I was paying about $800 a month for health care coverage for the wife and myself. Yes, those contracting agencies take every opportunity to gouge the people they find contract work for. Now that I've gone full time again, my health care (and this is the high cost plan) runs $215/month and it is fairly good coverage. The low cost plan runs about $20/month, but that requires you pay your $5K deductible up front but all costs after that covered 100%.

So I am keeping my fingers crossed the rates don't double.Other than that, fuck Obamacare.

Those nations all created those plans decades ago, before governments were captured by corporations.

If Sweden or UK had to create the plan today, you would have the same problems.

If it is made single payer, it will be a massive, corrupt, tax grab. All the money will go to the .Gov or HC Corps, and the rest of the economy will be crushed. Costs wont'go down, it won't be cheaper, we won't all hold hands and sing Kumbayaa and be like Norway.

Single payer government health care will be vile in the USA when it gets here.

Why? Since the 19th century the powers that be in this country have aimed to engineer society. With total control of medical care they will get to decide which of us livestock are worthy of the expense and which of us are not.

If you can still make a profit for the top of the pyramid you'll get medical care. If you can't, you die. That simple.

On the plus side people will be more motivated to take care of themselves instead of expecting other people to pay for their medical care.
