The US didn't discover the Muthanna complex in June of this year, they discovered it about thirty years ago before the first Gulf War.

The U.S. bombed Muthanna during the first Gulf War and sent a giant plume of Sarin right over Baghdad. The U.S. press didn't mention much about that at the time. After the war, the UN chemical weapons guys came in and occupied the site for the next decade. They used it as a chemical weapons collection and destruction facility.

The chemical weapons were all removed from their containers, missiles and shells and destroyed as they were collected. By 2003 Iran said they had destroyed everything but the UN was still inspecting sites to make sure. At Muthanna, he UN just had to finish disposing the neutralized chemical waste and get rid of the empty rockets and shells. If they found anything else, it would have been brought to Muthanna, so they didn't entirely close the site at that time.

There were no chemical weapons left at the site aside from one of the old bunkers destroyed in the U.S. bombing. It was too toxic for the UN guys to bother with so they sealed the whole thing in concrete shortly after they arrived there. Even if someone chipped through the concrete today and found some old 122mm Sarin shells, the Sarin would be nearly completely degraded and useless.

The US claim of Iraqi WMDs had nothing to do with the Muthanna site (which they knew was clean), but the other sites that the UN inspectors had been inspecting and clearing over the years. Colin Powell, for example, claimed that the Iraqis had not turned in all their chemical weapons to the UN by 2003 like they were suppose to and were moving them between various facilities (not Muthanna, of course) prior to UN inspections. Powell's 'evidence' was satellite imagery of the Iraqis moving something out of bunkers prior to the UN inspector arrivals.

The US either destroyed those suspect facilities in the second Gulf War or had US troops inspect them and never found any evidence of the secret chemical weapons stashes that were supposedly being moved around. Since Saddam was trying to get sanctions lifted in 2003, some thought he was just cleaning everything out of any place that was going to be inspected out of caution. He wasn't hiding anything - just getting rid of any odds and ends that might piss off the UN inspectors and prolong the sanctions.

But to answer your first question. Gruber is one of those very smart persons that never mastered one skill - to think before you talk. Not that it matters an iota. An ocean away it´s fascinating to see the introduction of state-sponsored total socialism in the U.S. being explained to the idiots by a giggling evil savant. I think this is of historic importance. Like the Berlin wall coming down - or perhaps more aptly when it was put up.Like watching the news reels of the East Germans totally not comprehending what was happening and kinda thinking it would be torn down or opened up - like next month.

I remember the debates here on ZH about the system and the majority of respondents who could simply just not grasp that this was not a comprehensive insurance plan but also a plan (a tax indeed) to redistribute their "wealth " willy-nilly to others. Having lived in a socialist system in my youth - I had the possibility to understand what really was going on. And now it has been spelled out , clearly , by Gruber to all the idiots (his words) that your pay-check and your life is not yours to any extent any more.

Now you get it? Or are you still going to be idiots about it (not you WB) - I am addressing all the kind well-meaning "liberal" folks that from time to time visit ZH.

Now you understand that you are the marks? The chumps? If not - then you never will.

Wish you could have heard it.

Yes - events seem to have muted some of their enthusiasm.

There´s some interesting news reels from that day in East Berlin when the wall went up. The day before people travelled freely to and fro to family and friends and such in the western sector by car or by S-Bahn (tram) or U-Bahn (underground). On that day everything what just shut down and travellers where brusquely pushed back to the eastern sector by police and russian personell. And old lady was gleefully told by a VOPO (Peoples Police ) as they were called - "Well Granny , now the trap has sprung and all you rats are stuck in it" (rough translation from German). Many of those living in East Berlin were apolitical or liberals or socialdemocrats or more in general just christians (Protestants or Catholics). A mixed bag. Rather few were hardline communists. Some were part of some kind of commie organization just because they had to - for work or just being fed and keeping the family together.But it really didn´t matter what anyone thought about anything.

When you loose your personal freedom - it´s gone. A lot of people wax and vane about democracy this and that but the real tell is the degree of general freedom within a society ruled by law.

And now we can behold the spectacle of that evil,giggling creature Gruber laying out in great detail how smart he has been and not giving a damn about any consequence at all. Previous system was not without issues and bad consequences for many - but lying and manipulating under the guise of righting a wrong is just...evil in a banal way.

And now the liberal are also stuck in the same rat trap. It kinda makes you wonder - what´s next?

My reference to banality is just the observation that you normally think that evil would not be banal - rather some kind of majestic bold devilish kinda a thing. But I think this is what the real stuff looks like.

Still - based on my observations after all my years living in the USA - I am surprised. Americans have never really struck me as the kind of people where it would be OK to spy and inform on your neighbours and just suffer any intrusion by the "authorities". It´s simply not the American way! And I do think that the majority still feel that it is wrong in all aspects. But when evil is sold by a "liberal" with a smile and under the guise of compassion - then it seems like just anything is accepted. And this creeping fear of everything that started to permeate the population during the Bush years. Yes - you have been attacked (by whom we really don´t know to the full extent) but I would like to quote Abe Lincoln that any foreign attacker stupid enough to try wouldn´t even get as far as the Blue Ridge mountains. They would be dead-meat (me not Abe).
