Senior Citi Banker Found Dead In Bathtub With Slashed Throat

Tyler Durden's picture

The dust has barely settled on the latest high profile banker suicide in which Deutsche Bank's associate general counsel, and former SEC regulator, Charlie Gambino was found dead, having hung himself by the neck from a stairway banister, and here comes the latest sad entrant in the dead banker chronicles of 2014 when earlier today, the Post reports, a Citigroup banker was found dead with his throat slashed in the bathtub "of his swanky downtown apartment, authorities said Wednesday."

More:

Shawn D. Miller, Citigroup’s managing director of environmental and social risk management, was discovered around 3 p.m. Tuesday by a doorman in the Greenwich Street building, law enforcement sources said. “We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with Shawn’s family at this time,” said a statement sent out by Citigroup.

Bloomberg adds that "a 42-year-old man was found unconscious yesterday in the bathtub of his Greenwich Street apartment in lower Manhattan with a neck laceration and later pronounced dead, the New York Police Department said in a statement."

Medics declared him dead after responding to an emergency call about 3:11 p.m. and an investigation to determine the cause of death is continuing, police said.

Miller advised executives and clients on sustainability matters, including environmental and social policies related to industries including mining and renewable energy, according to his LinkedIn profile. He helped oversee the development and implementation of policies in more than 100 countries.

“We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with Shawn’s family at this time,” Danielle Romero-Apsilos, a spokeswoman for the New York-based bank, told Bloomberg an e-mailed statement.

However, unlike previous more "clearcut" suicides, this time there may have been foul play: the Post adds that "there was no knife recovered at the scene, leading officials to suspect the death was not a suicide, and they were trying to determine who had access to his apartment."

Miller did well: "one-bedroom apartments at the building are listed at more than $1 million."

An online profile under the man’s name calls him a “pioneer in sustainable finance” and a specialist in emerging markets at the International Finance Corp., part of the World Bank. Several former colleagues told The Post that Miller was well-liked.

It was unclear why the doorman checked his apartment.

Miller's LinkedIn profile is shown below:

I dont get it.

As far as bankers go this guy looks relatively benign and more so unconnected to any activity libor fx etc that would warrant a pretty gruesome and messy dispatch. With an obviuos murder rather than elaborate staged suicide there will surely be cctv forensics and a modicum of inducement to actually investigate this particular ultimate bailout. Most likely it was a personal issue or a a potential whistle blower was silenced. I feel a bit sorry for the guy and his family.

Actually there are all kinds of unsavory characters who can be slighted by someone in this role.

He probably sits on the banks risk committee, or his boss does and in that role he makes recommendations on whether or not it is a good idea for the bank to engage in certain types of transactions involving unsavory characters and activities. These could include all manner of environmental and social exploitation.

Moreover, if he did the same work at the IFC, his exposure to third world types involved in all manner of human and environmental strip mining could have easily led to a motive for retribution by people who have the ware withal to exact revenge. Oh, we wanted to do the deal but that risk asshole said no.

The detective assigned to this case will have a field day.

I can see someone writing a mystery novel: The Bankster With a Columbian Necktie

He could've been a nice guy doing a good job helping, I dunno, Indonesia or Peru keep up their IMF payments.

If there's a link between this apparent murder and his job, it could relate to what he knows about other people. Mid-level guys like this would be prime candidates to flip if they were arrested, and implicate higher-ups.

It might not even be a case of higher-ups worried about jail time (I mean, how many mid-level bankers, let alone higher-ups, have seen a jail cell?). With governments shaking down banks for various multi-billion dollar fines, it could just be good old cost-containment.

That was a joke, but either the guy was suprised in the tub, or the killer was averse to making a bloody mess in the rest of the apartment -- so a neat freak or he believed that doing him in the tub would reduce evidence, or something similar. If you've seen any crime scene photos of murders committed with blade instruments -- well, usually the scene makes horror movies look tame, it's a huge mess.

Makes you wonder if they called the previous ones 'suicides' a bit too lightly.

Well, at least this time, the murderer was clean and tidy. Dispose of the guy in the bathtub, no blood splattering everywhere and messing it all up.

Given his background and role in Citi, chances are this guy knew too much and wasn't willing to look the other way. If any potential whistleblowers at any of these banks read this, you cannot let them know that you know. Do not tell you supervisors. You are going to have to do a Snowden and go big all at once. There are still some good people in the banks who know right from wrong and what to do the right thing. They just know they or their family will end up dead if they do. We need someone on the inside to start leaking information to the Hedge about what is going on. Someone, somwhere knows how the fed in currently intervening in the markets, what is being rigged and how, and who controls what.

Think on that, especially if you have children.

I do not know exactly what makes people go bad, and no one is saying this guy was a bad guy (like Blankfein, Obama, Soros or Prince Philip)

I think that for those who are not born into evil society, going bad happens slowly and then suddenly when they are compromised ... and they see no way back. I know quite a few people like this, who hate their existence, but see no way back (except asking for forgiveness).

Actually you are wrong, but in your ignorant rush toward the kind of sanctimony of which others accuse me, you miss it.

Though it is a minor part of any bank, and probably more a PR play at the senior level than heartfelt intent, there are groups within banks whose aim is to do a moral business and do no harm (and before you jump on "moral business", please make sure never in your life have you taken any sort of loan, a mortgage, failed to pay cash for a purchase, etc., because if so, you are just a hypocrite).  Someone like the deceased--neither you nor I know---might have been in such a group, and might have had as his goal a desire to force his organization to do something of value in the world.

For example, mining---whether for iron ore, bauxite or your PMs---can be a nasty and destructive endeavor.  It can rape the environment, introduce toxins into the soil and water supply, or in some places displace people who just happen to live above the resources.  It is entirely possible that this man served to make sure minimal damage was done and that firms taking Citi's money behaved responsibly.  It is even possible he upset someone who felt no such responsibility to people or the environment.  Again, neither you nor I know the details.

Around here, such considerations do not matter.  Each and every death is posted specifically for financial gain, with the operators knowing it will bring out the usual freaks cheering on the death.  Frankly, such pandering for money is as reprehensible as anything any banker does.  The moral high ground is lost.

Perhaps it is high time you wake up and get a clue, asshole.  You might also want to do a little research into the genesis of the site you frequent.  Also, monetizing the whackjob demo might make the cash register ring, but a graph of site visits is indistiguishable from that of CNBC viewership trends.

Oh he's one of these morons.

"and before you jump on "moral business", please make sure never in your life have you taken any sort of loan, a mortgage, failed to pay cash for a purchase, etc., because if so, you are just a hypocrite"

You do know that it's entirely possible to criticize a bank for undertaking fake "moral business" while taking a loan, mortgage, or whatever you're trying to claim is an on par moral outrage.

This guy's an impressive idiot.  Hypocrite?  Yeah - because we as individuals are like banks.  If we, in our desperation or stupidity, take a loan, then we're just as guilty as a friggin bank that is ripping the country apart.  We should shut up because our criticism is "hypocritical".

Never let these arguments in a vacuum, that ignore the role of power multipliers (i.e. I'm not a bank, but a bank is a friggin bank), last on this board.   They are transparent Trolly McTardpants distractions.

Raw meat?  To generate clicks?  No, this story is fucking tragic, that's what it is!  But as disgusting as his grim execution was, the FACT REMAINS that he is another in a long-line of suicided/murdered high-profile bankers.  And this is all taking place in a time when the entire global financial Ponzi scheme is wobbling like a spinning top running out of juice.  And who the fuck are you to lecture the people who have played by the rules and worked hard, only to fall prey as victims themselves to rigged markets, tyrranical fascist governing systems and negative interest rates?  The real tragedy is this thing won't even generate a lead or two towards finding justice for this poor soul, because the justice system is bought and paid for just like everything else!  So chindit, there's a natural draw toward levity because we don't know the details but we do know the whole thing stinks, especially for his family and loved ones!

@Chindit,

On the odd occasion I've enjoyed your posts, yet you can be quite the sanctimonious SOB.

>>>>yet you losers rejoice in his death, despite the fact that 99% of you addled brain fuckwads have never done a useful thing in your entire life.

Bloody hell, overgeneralize much? HTF would you know?

>>>There might be a time when your kids meet an untimely end. Karma says people will rejoice when it is your child who suffers and dies from cancer, just for the LULZ.

Yea, well my kid's demise was an indirect result of this madness. Unless you've lost yours...

FUCK YOU, you know not of what you speak.

What are you talking about chindit?  Are you saying that you do not like us?  Well guess what?  We have a great deal for you that will not cost you anything.  Our new package includes the "I am not going to log into ZeroHedge" along with an "I voted because I am an asshole" sticker.

The Tylers have been getting ripped on tonight.  Do you realize how hard it is to come up with content for a blog?  It is much harder to do than you might imagine it to be.  If you do not like us anymore then you can go elsewhere and not worry your heart about what we think.  You have been around a while so I respect that fact.  Probably a better mode would to be to enumerate your questions to the Tylers.  I would not go ripping on ZH commenters.  Bad strategy.  You need to understand that it is THEIR website and that they can post whatever they want whenever they want.

Sure there are some things that I don't like about ZH but there are more things that I do like.  If I had to bitch I would say that we could use Francis Sawyer back even if he was a little over the top.  I could see that from a corporate perspective.  I don't know that Fonzanoon needed to be deleted either.  What we need to remember is that it is not our website. I have my own and I am always looking for good writers.  How much can I really write that is not the same thing over and over again?

Chindit, I have seen what you have written in the past.  I know that you are better than your last post.  I understand your frustrations but you have to remember that the Tylers were not the ones that caused the grief in the first place.  They are not central bankers.

At first I was wondering "why the hell would they whack a guy in charge of environmental and social risk management?"

Then I realized that's probably a cover for something else, something a whole lot darker than trading carbon credits or building solar plants.  Sort of like how Unit 731's official name was "Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department of the Kwantung Army".  Whatever's going on in that guy's area must be bad enough to suicide him.

Was this a Global Warmng Gang hit ?

If things are getting bad in the tax-credit-swap-trade world...and TIPPING point then it could be Global Warming related ?

It dumps 10 feet of snow in New York and WHAMMO all their warming credits just went POOF...and so they recover their insurance claim.

Maybe this guy was trading Warming credits ?

Maybe.

Choomwagon Roof Hits's picture

I doubt it, this sounds like a way darker situation than anything related to global warming..."environmental and social risk management" is perfect as a cover.

Nobody's going to really question it from the outside because it sounds like a noble cause, the auditors won't raise any questions because everything will be properly accounted for and the description of their purpose is vague enough that any money moving into or from the department can be explained away.  After all, 100% of the world has environmental and social risks.  Whatever the hell was moving into and out of this area had nothing to do with the environment, sort of like how Unit 731 had nothing to do with epidemic prevention.

These middle-management banker murders are easily explained by the structure used by the American Mafia; the mid-level guys are the most dangerous because they are the link between the street-level soldiers and the higher ups.  Suicide them and it severs the link between the criminals on the street and the ones ordering it from up high.
