Stunning Photos Of Record Snow Covering Upstate New York: 100 Total Inches Of Snow Expected

Tyler Durden's picture

As previously reported, the anticipated Polar Vortex 2.0 has struck, pushing temperatures in all 50 states to below freezing, while heavy snow prompted a state of emergency in western New York and contributed to the deaths of four people. According to Reuters, it was the coldest November morning across the country since 1976, according to Weather Bell Analytics, a meteorologist consulting firm. It remains to be seen how many GDP percentage points were wiped out as a result, unless of course, this time it will be different from last winter. Typically, such cold is not seen until late December through February.

But it was the situation in upstate New York, especially around Buffalo and parts of Erie County, where things got most dire and where 60 inches (1.5 m) of snow accumulated, with more falling, said Steven Welch of the National Weather Service near Buffalo. Snow fell at a rate of up to five inches (13 cm) an hour and some areas approached the U.S. record for 24-hour snowfall totals of 76 inches, or over 6 feet, the NWS said.

The record cumulative snowfall through Wednesday is shown in the image below:

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for 10 counties. National Guard troops were deployed to help residents cope with the storm.

The good news, according to CBS, is that the Tuesday storm is fading away: deputy Erie County Executive Rich Tobe told reporters Wednesday morning that the storm had begun to move toward Buffalo's northern suburbs, and was expected to leave 2-5 more inches of snow in its wake. But he said the break would be short-lived for the hard-hit southern Buffalo suburbs, where forecasters were calling for more snow on Thursday, as much as three feet more, for a total of up to 100 inches over four days - a year's worth for the region. Still, there should be an 18 hour window to clear roads, he said.

And then it is all set to flip again, with the current freezing period expected to be followed by a "dramatic warming trend this weekend," raising the possibility of flooding from melting snow.

One of the main culprits for the heavy snow accumulation was the so called "lake-effect" which created a stark divide: In downtown Buffalo and north of the city, there was a mere dusting of precipitation, while in parts south, snow was everywhere. The snow band that brought the snow was very much evident throughout the day as gray clouds persistently hovered over the southern part of the city. The band was so apparent that the wall of snow could be seen from a mile away.

A dramatic time-lapse of the snow-wall can be seen in the video below:

But nothing compares to the photos on the ground as shocked residents woke up to find themselves literally burried under 6 or more feet  of snow. Here is a sample of what they saw on Tuesday morning courtesy of Albany Meteorologist Greg Pollak:

When the Liberals try to promote their lies, climate or otherwise, the new term is: "Gruberian" conspiracy or you have been "Grubered" when the lie is in action... For example black folks have been Grubered into believing liberals care about them..  This lie was a Gruberian conspiracy..   See how that works..

If you live on the Great Lakes like I do, then you know this as the famous "Lake Effect Snow". This time of year the waters are warm and this arctice air very cold, the moisture streaming into the air off the lakes gets sucked up by the very dry cold air and taken inland and deposited as snow. All thats needed is the cold air to travel over the water at the right speed and heights.

We get this here on Lake Superiors shore. I have seen 3 feet of snow dumped in a day while surrounding areas have no snow at all. It is unique to this Great Lakes area where nice warm water meets extreme cold and dry arctic air. The South Shore of Lake Superior is famous for it, here to the north it is rare but does happen from time to time. Upstate New York is ground zero for this effect when the wind direction, and temperatures are right. And now when lake water is still very warm from summer heating, the effect can be off the charts crazy.

climate is static, that is a fact!

now that that fact is settled, variations in climate from here on will be due to global warming/climate change

also, the climate change doctrine requires memory loss and idiocracy (ice ages never happened, warm-cool period oscillations never happened to the Earth, the Sahara was never green, the Anasazi never moved because of drought, the sun has no bearing on climate, volcanoes never erupted)

The Boston Carbon Credits party would have preceded the Boston Tea Party had they pushed for Global Warming dogma back then

The Great Snow of 1717 -- New England

The Great Snow was really a series of four storms that struck in quick succession in late February and early March of 1717. No one is quite sure how widespread the effects were, as record-keeping was spotty in colonial New England. Heavy snow was recorded as far away as Philadelphia, but Boston got hit the hardest.

That winter had already been a snowy one, with reports of five feet (1.5 m) of snow already on the ground when the Great Snow began. Three or four more feet (91.4 or 122 cm) were added to that total, with drifts reportedly reaching 25 feet (7.6 m), burying entire houses or forcing people to exit from second story windows.uld've hit hard in any era. But at a time when one could travel only by horseback or on foot, when no method of snow removal beyond a shovel and a strong back was available, and when many small communities struggled in ordinary winter conditions, the Great Snow hit especially hard. Roads were blocked for a week or more, and travel between New York City and Boston was impossible. In fact, there wasn't really anything that could be done about the roads -- except to wait for warmer weather to melt the snow.

while strictly speaking this, of course, does not disprove anthropogenic global warming, but its pretty fucked up that people are seriously claiming that "climate change" caused it, after 15 years of no increase in temperature, despite 15 years of modeling saying the ice caps were melting and snow was a thing of the past.

Its called Winter and it happens every year. Sometimes it snows a lot sometimes it doesn't. I really don't know why we are talking about this. Just another misdirection story to keep the stupid (Grubers words not mine) people busy talking about nothing.

I guess that is where the White Walkers will start cleansing the realm first.

Winter is Coming.

I don't say there is no global warming because of the snow...I say there is no global warming because there is no global warming.

2010 and 2005 tied for warmest years EVER on record

"the next warmest years are 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009, which are statistically tied for third warmest year. The GISS records begin in 1880."

All Global Warming science is complete fraud, and while that doesn't translate into zero environmental issues requiring attention, the whole jist of this initiative is to steal your economic and personal freedom's under the guise of saving the planet.

except thast NASA now admits the satellite that they base those temperature reports has been defective, sometimes showing absurd temperatures like above 600 F in WI in 2010...they have decomissioned the satellite now, but since it was launched in 2000, how long has it been dective?

"Then there was the admission by NOAA that the temperature data provided by their NOAA-16 satellite, on which the claims or a warming planet were based, were in error. A problem with the satellite meant it was reporting tempertures from 10 to 15 degrees hotter than they actually were. NOAA erased the data from their servers, but global warming propagandists still cite it in their claims of a warming world! It is interesting to note that NOAA did not detect the problem themselves, but only checked the data when outside observers pointed out that it was not consistent with ground observations."..."

Great Lakes users of the satellite service were the first to blow the whistle on the wildly distorted readings that showed a multitude of impossibly high temperatures.

In one example ... readings for June and July 2010 for Lake Michigan showed crazy temperatures off the scale ranging in the low to mid hundreds - with some parts of the Wisconsin area apparently reaching 612 F."

Except a "NASA ADMITS" claim NOT coming from NASA itself can be disregarded as a hoax.

Unbelievable how I still miss Buffalo. I remember working at SM Flickingers when the Blizzard 0f 1977 hit. Just out of college, trying to figure out what to do with my life. Back then, even if you screwed up, you could still come out well.  Stuck in the food warehouse where workers could not get in, but trucks could still get out, and I spent a few days there working, collecting double overtime, sleeping on dog food bales during my time off the clock. Only a few very large rats provided an occaisional distraction.

Left Orchard Park, now down in the deep south.  But , alas, as Thomas Wolfe wrote so eloquently, you can never go home again. I would, if it weren't for all the taxes and regulations, especially with absurd gun control and now a new  law requiring turning over heirloom firearm collections within 60 days after owner's death.

Who left the fridge open...

Anyone who actually is trying to make a living in academic science (like me) knows the truth - scientists are like politicians, except exchange grant $$$ for votes. No grant $$$ (or no votes) = no job. Thus, do/say/publish anything that will get you grant $$$, scarier the better. This was confirmed when a recent study by the pharmaceutical industry demonstrated <20% of all basic medical science studies are reproducible.

http://www.nature.com/nature/focus/reproducibility/

The climate fears are the same. Climate scientists, who do some good work, overreached and thought "hey, let's scare the crap out of everyone with some easy to interpret hockey stick graphs, we'll get more $$$, and that's what is right for the public... we should know, because we are the scientists"! Bah! No different than a Church asking for your donation to help save your soul. Best of intentions and the road to hell and all that...

Should we study climate? Sure, it's interesting. Should we obtain grant $$$ to study climate by scaring the crap out of the public by throwing out numbers they don't understand how to interpret. No, but that's the way it works. The only climate to fear right now is the funding climate - drink the kool-aid and you're in; argue against it, be gone you heretic!

"You did baby. You did" ; )

AR5 is based on some 30,000 published science articles and was over 5 years in the making. Absolutely there are many scientists hoping there will be an AR6. My view is that everybody needs funding to live life. Look what we put ourselves through when we go for a job interview or entice someone to buy our product or service. It seems that as we achieve more success we gain more freedom to not have to "do/say/publish anything". They're known as starving artists for a reason...

I see no logic in saying because funding and because pharmaceutical industry and because church industry therefore AR5 is invalid. Nor do I see that your personal experience means you can tell people here "that's the way it works" when it comes to a massive project like AR5.

AR5 goes further than AR4 in discussing species extinction, and yeah, The Sixth Mass Extinction should be alarming.

"throwing out numbers they don't understand how to interpret" is pure hyperbole

issues of funding and peer-review need to be discussed and some scientists might have less than desirable integrity but let's try to keep it logical

possibility #1: they stick with the AGW lie.
possibility #2: they start a new AGC lie.
-----

What is ZERO possibility is for the predators-that-be to admit that weather is naturally variable, that weather naturally changes on time scales from seconds to minutes to hours to days to weeks to months to years to decades to centuries to millennia and beyond... and while interesting to study, no hysteria or theft like "carbon credits" and "carbon taxes" should exist.

No, they will NEVER back off from any opportunity to enslave and defraud and steal.  THAT is not a possibility.  Ever.

Until and unless the predators-that-be meet their justice in the guillotines.  But that would require humans who aren't fools, and are willing to take actions.  So, bring on the scams until the entire farce that is mankind spirals right down the toilet.  And good riddens.

PS:  Snow in Buffalo?  That's news?  :-o
