Shocking Pictures Of A Russian Potash Mine Disaster

Tyler Durden's picture

A sinkhole 20 by 30 meters (65 by 98 feet) in size has been found near a Uralkali mine in Russia's Perm region. As Mining.com reports, while stunningly no casualties have been reported so far, the situation is expected to worsen as locals fear that the hole could get bigger and swallow their houses.

As RT reports,

The sinkhole was first discovered by Uralkali's Solikamsk-2 mine workers on November 18. According to local emergency services, it's located some two miles from the mine itself, in an old abandoned mine.

Old, out-of-use garden patches were affected by the accident, and there is no danger to locals, as the sinkhole is in no close proximity to any residential buildings, the company said.

There are no "catastrophic" effects of the sinkhole neither for the company, nor for the locals, Uralkali CEO Dmitry Osipov said, adding that the incident has been localised.

Before the giant hole appeared near the town of Solikamsk, the company, which is Russia's biggest potash miner, evacuated workers at the Solikamsk-2 mine, due to the inflow of saline water. Operations at the site have been halted, and the level of underground water is being monitored.

Locals fear that the hole could get bigger and swallow their houses, which are some 2 miles from the sinkhole now. Regional authorities say the sinkhole could get bigger, but would still be of no danger to people.

The flooded mine, Solikamsk-2, is connected to another mine, Solikamsk-1, which is causing concerns among people in the region. The underground tunnels linking the two were walled up decades ago, but water would only need time to break through, people fear.

On the bright side, now Putin has somewhere big enough to store his gold and imagine the GDP growth from fillingh the hole back in!!

If that hole is only 98' across, those must be doll houses around it.  I live in a small house myself, but it's still ~50' end-to-end.  It would take a lot more than two of my houses to span that gap.

That hole is moar like 98 METERS across or some 320 feet comrades!

I confirmed this by scaling the house on the far right in the bottom photo to its doorway heigt of about 8 ft which makes that house about 28 feet  across

Scaling that to the hole in front of it says it's over 350 feet across.

But is good news to say no vehicles and no chimney smoke visible in photos so nobody home there.

Soon nice lake there for ice fish huts! DA!

But for now this big hole is a perfect analogy for the market's implosion about to happen.

Why are these sinkholes and other big holes appearing in russia, along with lots of flashing lights in the skies seen by the locals and Nowhere else? It cant be totally because of climate. U can go on YouTube and see for yourself all the weird occurrences in russia of late. Maybe russia is getting attacked and the media just spinning things as usual to cover it up.

I've been to Centralia, before and after it was "infamous."

The "Coal Barons" are still paying the price for being so sloppy in their "management" of the mining of the world's richest anthracite coal seams.

My grandfather spent the better part of his life working for them.

And bare knuckle boxing when he wasn't in the mines.

God calls the owners of those mines to account:

"Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you." - James 5:1-6

Those are sheds, bro.  These are garden plots called "dachas"  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dacha

Much of the vegetables in Russia are grown by its own people - even city people who know it's important to have a connection to the land.  It's also how they'll survive while Americans eat each other in the cities when crisis comes.

But of course, it's a terribly repressive country where people don't experience freedom like living off the land or anything /sarc

Either that whole town is abandoned since the mine closed decades ago, or they are lying.

Old, out-of-use garden patches were affected by the accident, and there is no danger to locals, as the sinkhole is in no close proximity to any residential buildings, the company said.

Funny that it would be the plots in the center of town that were all undeveloped, while every other plot has a dwelling on it. Looks to me like 6 units went down the hole.

I don't see the relationship between the photos and the article.

It's obvious that row of houses went through the hole. And buildings are nearby, not two miles away.

And locals wouldn't say 2 miles. Kilometers.

Smells.

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 22:44 | 5472255 RaceToTheBottom
RaceToTheBottom's picture

I understood the houses to be garden plot houses.  If correct, they are small rooms to store tools and equipment for use on a small plot.

People regularily stay and sleep in those since the garden plots are sometimes harder to reach.  Not sure I would sleep there now.  Probably not even work there.

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 22:58 | 5472291 ebear
ebear's picture

I would guess that is the original mining camp from a previous era, and like they said, now used for garden plots.  Zoom in and you'll see many buildings are boarded up, and there's no sign of any vehicles or other activity.

For obvious reasons, there's been a trend in recent years to locate workers as far as practical from operating or disused mines.  This looks to be no exception.

This is just a big hole in the ground.

THIS, is a mining disaster.

Look at the cross section map, there is a thick layer of brine water inbetween the potash layer that was mined and the fresh ground water. Nice salt water pond, unless it settles nicely into layers. If they are lucky, they won't salinate their ground water and soil in the whole surrounding area.

Please think before opening the empty interior of your cranium for all to see.

I don't see why you are getting junked but Minneapolis is an odd place.  I know that place well and I can;t say that I love it.  I lived for five years on the north side in Brooklyn Park.  The north side is ruthless.  You had best carry a firearm if you ever have to drive through Near North and especially the Jordan neighborhood.  The south side is not great either.  That it what they call "uptown", yeah well it is up something alright.  Take a trip down Lake Street in the south.  For North try Lyndale Avenue and have a trip through there.  You will see shit that you could not believe.  What a shithole.

If you ever go to to Minneapolis go to Northeast.  They have some great restaurants there and sorts of cultures.  It is shithole in a way but it is old school shithole.  Take East River Road off 694.  East River Road turns into Marshall street as you get closer to city center and intersects with Hennepin Ave which takes you right downtown.  Locals know that route but it is not heavily traveled.  NorthEast is getting a be a hipster area but there are some really neat places there to see.  If you do end then go to Anchor Fish and Chips.  It is just amazing food for a really inexpensive price.  I believe that it is about $11 for a basket of fish and chips.  If you go downtown you are going to pay out your ass and I am talking like around $200 for a dinner and that is for ONE PERSON.  Yeah, I went with the sales gal from BASF and she dropped $3K on dinner that night at Ruths Chris.  That was way off the charts.  Damn right it was good steak for sure but that is full retard price.  I have been to other places down there and most of it way overpriced.  Your meal deals are going to be in Northeast.

Brits pub is very nice place and they have interesting for dale there and also have good beer.  You can actually real a black and tan there.  There is an Irish bar down the street about three or four blocks to walk on Nicollet but that is one very very nice place.  They imported the bar and the back back from Ireland.  Some drunk Irishman though that this was a good idea to bring the whole bar from Ireland to.  I have to respect that.  They have the best calamari in town and whole back bar is lined with Jameson whiskey.  It's not really that cheap though.  In fact, It is very expensive.  If you want to see hot chicks that is where you will find a quite a few of them.  It is easy to blow a thousand bucks in in any of those downtown taverns.  That why you eat in Northeast.

Then you have the nudey bars.  I figured that one out because I dragged into one of those.  They give you drinks for free and one of them is Sheiks.  So now this little old country boy figured out how to get free liquor downtown Minneapolis.  There was a really hot chick rubbing against me.  I liked her and all but I also like my wife and even better was the free booze.  I never gave her one dollar.  She finally asked if I don't like women.  I do like women but I already have one and you guys are serving up free booze here so I more interested in that.  I think it is about $5 for a cover charge but you can get drunk as hell in that place for practically nothing.  That was value added.

So there you go on what do in Minneapolis if you come there.  I do like to visit there but I would not like to live there.  There are other neat to places to go as well but that would get you started in case you end up here for some reason.

1. Gather around the gaping bottomless pit and throw your money in.

2. Step back to avoid being swallowed as the hole grows larger.

3. Repeat.

The five year plan is not working again.  The second trip I made to Russia I went to southern Russia and had the chance to view Ukraine's fields and some of southern Russia.  I was looking out the window and I could ask myself was "What the fuck happened here'?  My background is agriculture so I knew what I was looking at.  Massive erosion problems.  Some of the crop lands were entirely wiped out.  All of the top soil was gone and you don't just come up with a five year plan to fix that.  Topsoil with organic matter takes thousands of years to create.  You can not issue a diktat that "There shall be topsoil".  No, you assholes fucked it all up with your central planning.  That is really fucked the Soviet Union up.  That is when I realized why the Soviet Union collapsed.  They fucked up their agriculture something fierce.

I saw it later on the ground near Azov as we rumbled along in the old Russian bus.  It was better there than Ukraine but you could tell that is was not what it could be.  I really did look like they had some beautiful soils there at one and in some places they still do but a lot of it was ruined because .sovietgov.  I had to go looking at the soils and the Russian folks I was with were asking me what it is that I was looking for.  Then they realized what I was doing.  And I won't fly 7000 one way miles and not take a look around.  Who flies all the way from the Upper Midwest of the United states to look soils in Russia?

Realistically, one of Russia's main problems is it's agriculture.  To many soviet era five year programs have really fucked the place up.  The sad thing is that we are doing the same thing here in the West theswe days.  I could believe a sinkhole could happen and obviously it did.  Russia has massive amounts of potash no doubt but so what if your topsoil has washed down every river in central and Eastern Europe?  What good did that accomplish?  Zero good is what it accomplished and it is part of the reason why the Ukranians are having an issue.  I know that a lot of people think that it is a West/East issue between Ukrain and Russia and there is some truth to that but what appears to me to be the case, as I have seen through my own eyes, is that the Soviet Union and central planning ruined their croplands and thus their way of life and providing sustenance to themselves and their children.  I would be pissed off too.

They fucked up bigtime and now we are fucking up bigtime with massive global corporate interests in agriculture.  People sitting around and coming up with "Plans" that end up fucking you so they can make something short term.  No one ever really looks at the long term though because you can't drive your profit margins through the roof for the next quarter.  Either that or .gov gets involved and manages to fuck everything up because they don't know which end of the shovel you dig with.  I really do not either of those options so I guess I just have to keep moving on.  At same time, I know that it would at least a million US dollars to even start up a small anymore.  Then you have to have all of these state mandated licenses and other shit like that.  No wonder no one wants to go into agriculture.

I wish them the best in Russia with their big hole in the ground.  Vlad seems to be a superhero of sorts to Westerners so he should be able to fly in and fill that hole in all by himself.  But he won't.

"Topsoil with organic matter takes thousands of years to create."

I would beg to differ with you on this point. You can create good topsoil with a five year plan. It takes the planting of good cover crops (rye, clover, buckwheat etc) grazing of herbavores such as cattle, followed by scavengers such as chickens, and if done on a rotational basis, this will create good fertile topsoil.

The fact that you state you have a background in agriculture, yet do not seem to be aware of this, seems to indicate that your background is in modern industrial farming (the spreading of vast amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides) and not natural, rotational farming.

However I do agree that govco makes farming prohibitively costly for the small farmer.

Interesting parallels in the tone used by the Russian authorities discussing the sinkhole and US financial authorities discussing the economy.

"The incident has been localised." = "Subprime is contained."

"The sinkhole could get bigger, but would still be of no danger to people." = "Debt levels could go higher, but would not cause any problems."

"Underground water is being monitored." = "The  Fed will closely monitor economic conditions."

And so on. All to create the false impression that the authorities have magical powers that will keep everything under control.

Depends on what your definition of "close" "is" -- sure looks like a pair of residential 'dachas' have a new basement view c/w a subterranean run for the pet wolf. I guess we should trust the highly impartial RT journalism on this, after all they're really on the ball with the local version of the 'truth' and it's their turf after all.
