It is a mess, there is no doubt about it. Ferguson has disproportionate poverty relative to the rest of the state. More of the traffic stops are with blacks vs whites (86/12%), and more result in arrests (92/7%), even though the population is 63/33%. As we know the cops are predominantly white. With all that gear and training they have a soldier mentality. I can go on and on with the obvious injustices that clearly, if you are a law abiding African American, you are hassled and made to endure many hardships.
I think this shooting probably was a "good" shooting. You train to eradicate a threat and he had his eye socket caved in by Brown. If you thought he was coming to injure you again, yeah it is awful, but you unload the gun. Meanwhile the context is so awful that a good shooting comes "under fire" because the public does not trust you.
For me, justice is about what happened between this cop and this young man. It is not right to punish this cop for the entire corrupt system. That is just more corruption.
If I were black, I might go project mayhem, I can get the rage. But I wouldn't do it the way the looters are doing it. My retribution would be targeted, specific. I would threaten nothing, announce nothing, do nothing for any camera, but I would do it.
