The Tragedy Of Propping Up The Matrix Of Lies
Submitted by James H Kunstler via Kunstler.com,
Wall Street is only one of several financial roach motels in what has become a giant slum of a global economy. Notional “money” scuttles in for safety and nourishment, but may never get out alive. Tom Friedman of The New York Times really put one over on the soft-headed American public when he declared in a string of books that the global economy was a permanent installation in the human condition. What we’re seeing “out there” these days is the basic operating system of that economy trying to shake itself to pieces.
The reason it has to try so hard is that the various players in the global economy game have constructed an armature of falsehood to hold it in place — for instance the pipeline of central bank “liquidity” creation that pretends to be capital propping up markets. It would be most accurate to call it fake wealth. It is not liquid at all but rather gaseous, and that is why it tends to blow “bubbles” in the places to which it flows. When the bubbles pop, the gas will tend to escape quickly and dramatically, and the ground will be littered with the pathetic broken balloons of so many hopes and dreams.
All of this mighty, tragic effort to prop up a matrix of lies might have gone into a set of activities aimed at preserving the project of remaining civilized. But that would have required the dismantling of rackets such as agri-business, big-box commerce, the medical-hostage game, the Happy Motoring channel-stuffing scam, the suburban sprawl “industry,” and the higher ed loan swindle. All of these evil systems have to go and must be replaced by more straightforward and honest endeavors aimed at growing food, doing trade, healing people, traveling, building places worth living in, and learning useful things.
All of those endeavors have to become smaller, less complex, more local, and reality-based — rather than based, as now, on overgrown and sinister intermediaries creaming off layers of value, leaving nothing behind but a thin entropic gruel of waste. All of this inescapable reform is being held up by the intransigence of a banking system that can’t admit that it has entered the stage of criticality. It sustains itself on its sheer faith in perpetual levitation. It is reasonable to believe that upsetting that faith might lead to war. After all, a number of places organized as nation-states will be full of angry, distressed citizens clamoring for sustenance and easy answers — and quite a bit of their remaining real capital is stored in the form of things that blow up.
There is an awful lot that President Barack Obama has to answer for after all this time. But there is almost no public chatter (let alone true debate) about his failure to discipline the banking system. He should have commenced to restructure the biggest banks in January of 2009. He should have proposed through his congressional proxies the reinstatement of the Glass-Steagall act. Almost nobody besides Bill Black has remarked on the remarkable record of the SEC under Obama in making no criminal referrals to the Department of Justice, not to mention the stupendous dereliction of Attorney General Eric Holder.
Of course, Barack Obama is not the only eminent office holder in the land. The behavior of all the others the past decade represents such a titanic failure of nerve and action that the younger generation must think that only revolution can avail. I believe they’ll get their chance. Everything on the horizon — most particularly the idiotic chorus of financial “bulls” — points to an ever more harrowing outcome of the orchestrated pretense that governs money matters in this moment of history.
More of the moment is the anxious decision of the Ferguson, Missouri, grand jury in the matter of Michael Brown’s death. The race hustlers so prominently showcased on CNN want to put over the story that there is only one possible just decision. If it doesn’t work out the way they like, this will be a bloody holiday and perhaps the beginning of something much bigger.

Meanwhile - what do people think? I say they didn't indict and the cop's resignation will be announced at the same time - Thursday about noon if they're smart....
edit: later today? makes me think they did vote to indict.... well, popcorn ready, eh?

the suspension of mark to market was the turning point.

The suspension of mark to market avoided a turning point for some.
No problem here.......who's bitchin' silver is still dirt cheap and I still have a job to buy moar
The "boyz" all know when the bubble will burst and will have left town or taken positions against you.
Ha. ha. There will be no safe place for the 'boyz' to hide.....
Yeah? You gonna hunt them down in their Caribbean islands?
The "Game" is much grander than you know...
"Suburban Sprawl" is not the result of a 'Suburban Sprawl' industry.
It is the transition cost of non-forcibly moving people from small towns to big city plantations.
"Suburban Sprawl" is what you get when TPTB say, "Everyone must move onto the plantations", and everyone responds, "Screw you! We'll commute."
Suburban sprawl made sense in the 1970s and early 1980s, but now it is rapidly becoming an antiquated form of urban "planning". (I consider it unplanned).
The late 20th century had big regional indoor shopping malls with department anchors. That's obsolete because now we have eCommerce.
Then you had giant employment centers housing thousands of cubicles. That should be obsolete anyday now because most white collared work should be done in home offices instead. With Skype, teleconferencing, fax, e-mail, everything else, wasting money on commercial real estate office space will be a thing of the past.
Now you have thousands of square miles of cookie cutters dotting the landscape, with multi-billion dollar concrete ribbons called freeways connecting these cookie cutters to malls. A bunch of land wasted. These cookie cutters will be obsolete soon because the monthly mortgage to afford these poorly built boxes is beyond the reach of most people. A house that cost $20,000 to build in labor and materials 40 years ago is now magically worth a quarter million today despite being out of style and dilapidating. You work a shitjob for thirty years so a bank can lend you 1s and 0s and you end up repaying more in interest payments than what the list price originally was. That crap system needs to go asap.
Then we have all of these blohards worrying about UNemployment figures. I look at it from the other direction. Employment is way too high! After all of this automation, we should be retiring much earlier and we shoulld be working way less hours. Most "work" done today is bullshit and useless anyways.
Hillary Clinton made that silly comment about govt creating jobs, not business. In a twisted way, I ironically agree with her. If the IRS was abolished, there would be hardly any CPAs left because their whole careers are based on running numbers and legalese to satisfy the IRS.
In the gun industry, the NRA lobbied for background checks for those of you who don't remember. That creates JOBs, jobs, jobs. Instead of mail ordered firearm (nowadays the internet) being sent directly to your residence, now you had to have your mail ordered firearm go to a gun shop for a FFL transfer. Creates a job to do BS paperwork. Republican Bush implemented an import ban on guns. Now if an overseas country wants to sell old AKs, they have to destroy the receiver, ship the remaining parts as a "parts kit", import that into the country, a manufacturer has to reassemble the gun, and sell it to you for $700 + FFL fees and taxes. A $50 AK is now magically worth $700 thanks to stupid red tape. But hey, it creates jobs right?
Then manufacturers aren't allowed to sell firearms directly to the public. They use distributors, distributors sell to FFLs, FFLs sell to you. You have so many middlemen that a product that cost $250 to make in labor and materials now costs over $1,000 out the door! Just total insanity! But hey, it creates JOBs, right? Jobs are moar important than family and friends and hobbies in this twisted society of ours.
Fuck red tape, and screw useless jobs. Advancing technology should liberate us from work, not create moar.
This matrix needs to go down.
you know that thing you are on right now called "the Internet"? Guess who created it? Tass right, the USA government with a gov agency called DARPA!! Remember them spaceships who went to the Moon? Guess who created them? Tass right, a USA government sponsored agency called NASA! I can give you a LOT more example but Im bored.
3-D printers are becoming more capable every week.
One might ask: "what is the "keystone", which once removed, forces the constructed dependency state to collapse on itself"?
Is it energy? If people independently had infinite access to energy, would they be able to be independent?
Food? Shelter? Security of some sort? Religion.
... it is certainly not money because money, as a system, creates dependency.
In a distributed control system, there is no single thing that can bring it all down. Not so with central control.
Yes it is energy - look at the population growth over the centuries and see the explosion when cheap energy made the industrial age possible. Its going to be back to labor from dawn to dusk to feed ourselves when the motors of the world stop.
Yes, energy is one keystone. The petrodollar system is something, that when it crashes, is going to have an enormous effect on how much energy is avaliable to the US, so does that make it another keystone or just a prop for the energy keystone? I think the answer to that is philosophical and there is no definitive right or wrong answer. It is what it is. When the petrodollar system crashes, we are going to take a nearly immediate hit on how much energy we can import.
Import?
If the dollar and economic activity fall enough we'll probably be exporting most of it like Ecuador...
The answer to your question is this:
Confidence, and trust.
It is the glue that holds the system together...remove those and the Matrix collapses.
The most prosecutorial discression administration ever.........
MASSIVE deceptions by omission are included!

Yes, indeed - all Putin regime lies will be exposed and revealed it's crimes against people of Ukraine & people of Georgia and mainly - to people of Russia. All the wealth his mafia has stolen and put ehola country as outsiders and beggers of china. Yes - all those lies and corrupt Putin regime will be exposed and will collapse. Just like USSR did.
Yeah! Just like Putin stole the Ukies gold... oh wait, nevermind.

You know, real trolls are getting paid for their efforts. However, they have to look at least a little bit convincing (i.e. "efficient"). You sound like an amateurish fool, who volunteers his time for free (or has nothing better to do with his life...).
What? No NASCAR? Kunstler is slipping...
But "entropic gruel of waste" is pretty good.
"Wall Street is only one of several financial roach motels in what has become a giant slum of a global economy." Aye good Sir.
And gaseous wealth it is - all those 401K/IRA holders are going to get is to smell Wall Street's fart, just like 2008-2009.
If they try to take it out before 59-1/2 there's a 10% penalty off the top straight to the I.R.S., plus 15% taxed "income" (kind of like "imputed income" your Ex. Wife can claim you make even if you're unemployed and penniless - Amurika!).
In the meantime, Wall Street gambles with the savings of generations, and the FED slathers the banksters with gravy (debt that will be on the backs of future generations).
Evil incarnate.
I'm about tired of being told 'there's a bubble'.....big deal....so what's anyone going to do about it? Nothin!
My friend....every bubble that has ever been formed by nature or man has popped. Man made bubbles sometimes take longer due to our ingenious ways to keep them inflated. But it will pop. My guess......as I have said for years.......2020 give or take a couple of years......so 2018-2022. But the wheels will REALLY fall off after 2025.
“All of this mighty, tragic effort to prop up a matrix of lies might have gone into a set of activities aimed at preserving the project of remaining civilized.”
Words worthy of another Aristotle.
Let me give a little reinforcement:
Will Durant reported, in his History of Civilization, that the ancient world reached apexes of development, in every category of man’s activities (literature and engineering, medicine (actually, a science of health) and law, astronomy and mathematics et cetera) during the first century of the Current Era (commonly, AD). From there, man’s struggle moved in retrograde motion until about the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries. From that turning point, it took the world another 600 years to climb back to levels of achievement not seen for 1800 years.
Most people call these lost years the Dark Age, and that they lasted a thousand years.
Influences that brought on this Dark Age did not begin during the first century CE; they began many thousands of years before that period – and reached their goal in the time span mentioned. This means that we can’t lay all blame for the Dark Age on Christianity: its co-conspirator, and principal, was a “nation of death” now known as Judeo-Bolsheviks.
Had it not been for the Dark Age, what would be man’s condition today? We could begin this investigation by comparing man’s condition as it was in America around the year 1850 with his economic and technological condition today. We should disregard man’s ethical condition today because there is too much evidence that this “nation of death” has dominated sleaze purveyors since time out of mind; and to compare one period of time with another would merely compare contents of one garbage can with another. So, how do we measure man’s achievement over the last 150 years? Formerly, it took 4-6 months to travel from one coast of America to the other; today, a mere four hours. It took the same 4-6 months to send a message from coast to coast; today, less than a second.
What does this mean? If we could have rid mankind of the “nation of death” in the year 50 CE, men would have reached our level of economic and technological development by the year 200 CE.
Where would that put us today… traveling among the stars… with colonies on several planets thru-out the galaxy? And, without the corrupting influence of this “nation of death”, could we have rid the planet of wars, poverty, hunger, sleaze, slavery. The head spins with possibilities; and the heart breaks for the horrors men have suffered during the long and dark night of death. (Complete article)
Away with this 'Current Era' shit. Whether deliberately or not you're reinforcing the agenda that targets White males of Christian (or as you'd say, Xtian) heritage.
If you begin with an analysis from atheist and socialist Will Durant concerning the early development of civilization, which is a complete distraction from all the forces that have produced a civilized world, then your reasoning thereafter is flawed.
Because Will and Ariel Durant denied the significance of the worldwide spread of the Gospel following the birth of Jesus Christ, they missed the most critical development factor in the growth of Western Civilization. That single factor is the search for freedom; the spark for revolution, for innovation and discovery, for overcoming slavery and tyranny, for ways to make man’s life more productive, independent and fulfilling.
Man will not develop a slave mentality when he knows he is made in the image of God.
The convulsive factors that have plagued man from the very beginning by serfdom – disease, natural disasters and greed from some of his fellow men – had to be fought consistently and defeated. Because of that God-instilled desire to be free, civilization was the benefactor.
And by the way,"the 'nation of death' now known as Judeo-Bolsheviks," is the antithesis of Christianity, not the co-conspirator.
As the article you cite explains: “The first similarity in all these (Russian and Egyptian Exoduses and Babylonian exile) is that the propaganda and facts are the same. In all three, the propaganda represents Israelites (Hebrews or Jews) as enslaved masses. In all three, reported facts describe a horde of people, loaded with booty, abandoning a country, which is wholly uncharacteristic with the status of slave.”
The author cited explains his view:
“The rise and fall of the Soviet Empire was, perhaps, the most significant story of the twentieth century. It was copiously documented and studied; yet hardly a man realized that it represented the fulfillment of a major Old-Testament prophecy.
“The prophecy in question relates to the Israelite Exodus from Egypt and the Israelite exile to Babylon. These have a striking resemblance to the collapse of the Soviet slave pen in 1991, which was only a random step of the full prophecy. This Soviet Exodus was an on-going project, with most of it happening over the years 1989 to 1992. During that time, nearly a million Jews emigrated from the Soviet Union…
“I use the word prophecy advisedly; for, the events in question are a replication of a set of instructions laced cleverly thru-out the Old Testament. These instructions have spilled oceans of blood, and erased whole nations from the face of the globe, and, among those that survived such genocides, some civilizations have remained in a Stone-Age cultural and economic condition for upward of three thousand or four thousand years; all of Europe, for example, moved in retrograde for a thousand years before it began a recovery – most of Europe remains in retrograde motion to this day.
“Thus, it will be; until men take their heads from their clouds of fantasy, and hear up to a billion voices that cry from the earth for justice.”
The greatest enemy of this Bolshevik movement is Christianity which America’s state-controlled public school system is systematically censoring with mandatory instruction in atheism such as Darwinism while disallowing even a mention of "intelligent design."
JR,
As this character waited for death while on the cross, he encouraged his believers to go and spread the doctrine of "forgiveness".
Ah, what greater freedom could cutthroats and thieves want than impunity for their crimes and follies.
What's more, if freedom is what you want, why prostrate yourself before an invented character... when you could have learned lessons from a historical character in the person of Spartacus, who led an actual slave revolt.
Also, how do you allow the genocide of crusades and inquisitions into the same brain as a search for freedom and knowledge?
Ah, yes; the safety of tyranny relies on millions of brains like that.
This beloved country, a beacon to the world, is having its culture corroded and sodomized by the anti-Christians who would prefer a culture of survival of the fittest. Your post is typical.
Surely the cultural and moral breakdown in America would convince intelligent observers that the religion of man, called atheism or secular Judaism, is a pathway that is controlled by tyrants.
It was innate conscience and the love of God and belief in something greater than lowly man that created the permanent things in this world: liberty, respect, property rights, justice, honesty, innocence, honor, security, courage and selflessness. In short, the right to life. The prime example is Christian America.
It was the rules of man – atheism – that provided absolutely no limits, no standards, that ushered in totalitarianism – a boot stamping on a human face — forever. The prime example is Bolshevik Russia.
It was Soviet Communism that turned a society into a gulag, to death, to the evil dictates of atheist man – a Stalin, a Lenin, a Trotsky…
The Bible is God’s guide for man’s walk on his Creation, and unlike the laws of man it is not compromised, it doesn’t change. Discard it and society reaps the atheist whirlwind – the gulag's silent scream.
We have to endure some 'dark ages' as empires collapse.
JR wrote,
“The prime example [of a free society] is Christian America.”
Ah, you missed the real history class… not the one corrupted by Christians… the one un-sanitized by them.
So, you say America was founded by Christians. Then how come it was actually founded by men that were atheists or, at least, hostile toward religion?
Why do I say this? If you’ll recall, Ben Franklin (probably an atheist, easily anti-religious), introduced a motion at the Constitutional Convention to bring in a pastor every morning to give an opening prayer.
But, Christian-approved history books fail to tell you that the measure was defeated.
Go ahead, verify this: you’ll find it at June 26 of Madison’s Constitutional notes. The last entry on that day explains the measure “was tabled”; in other words: defeated.
When we go to Franklin’s notes on the topic, he reports that not more than 3-4 members on the floor were in favor of his measure. With 26-8 members present, that’s a rejection ratio of 85%.
Is this an example of Christian truth?
You’d better burn Franklin’s collected works before too many others read this info.
Another example that tells you that America was founded by anti-religious men is Article 6 of the federal constitution. There, it declares “there shall be no religious test for public office.”
If there is one distinction that belongs to America alone, it is that it was the first country, in all of history, that did not require a religious test for public office.
Consider these facts; then tell us how dedicated to truth Christians are.
It is marvelous how a brain can simultaneously endorse a system of mass genocides by forced conversions, inquisitions and crusades, while also describing that system as dedicated to truth, honor, justice, freedom, property rights, freedom of speech, compassion… you get the idea.
Again, every tyranny is made secure as such brains are made more common… by the millions.
As I made my tour of 30,000 to 50,000 pages of original and un-sanitized histories, I developed the opinion that it is absolutely miraculous that there is still human life on this planet, despite what men have done to their neighbors, friends, family members and even strangers… in the name of religion.
The race problems in Ferguson will be contained and a non-event. The 'liquidity' referred to was merely to balance the books for banks who were leveraged to the gills on unmarketable financial products that they didn't want to sell for 10 cents on the dollar. Enron on steroids. The derivatives bubble should break the bank, so to speak. I'm surprised they've been able to keep this house of cards propped up for as long as they have. A for effort.
What no tattoos or wallmart slams?
Kuntsler is the only commentator that I have seen since 2008 that has stated that Glass-Steagall must be reinstated back into legislation. Moreover, he characterizes O'Bummer's lack of due diligence aptly.
James Kunstler is a fine upstanding economics blogger and obviously
thinking on his feet whereas the majority of his colleagues are dithering
away doing nothing comparatively. The hard hitters need to be prompted out-of-the-woodwork from this point on IMHO. We have approximately two business quarters left before this epic fiasco blows
apart and fragments all societies throughout the world. At least Kunstler is on his toes like Tyler and Z/H is. One down and hundreds of millions to go, Z/H.
What if all of our worst fears come true, and the nation(s) turn to Orwellian Police state tactics in order to serve TPTB (oligarchy, NWO, etc). The state seems to have all the trump cards: Surveillence of every facet of our lives, military power, control of an out-of-control power structure.... What then should the 'minute-man/woman' do to combat the state? My first concern would be How do they move about without the state noticing?
I look at the preppers in the countryside bunkers - they are isolated from the main populations in the cities, and easily cut off. Their movements are easy to pick up. So too those in the suburbs.
The only place i can see that can evade the surveillance technology of the state would be in the ghetto, since the inner city population have long experience in evading the 'man'. I say that, knowing they are not currently evading the 'man', but in the time of large scale open insurrection, they will be the first to clean the surveillance cameras, and scanners from their precinct, first to man the barricades.
Just thinkin
This global banking and money stuff is all very complicated.
I'm gravitating toward the notion that it is like the Elephant and the Blind Men.
It is a vast, dynamic abstract organism, and no one has a grip.
Not the alarmists who are predicting crashes, panics, recessions, depressions, or exploding bubbles.
Not even the Rothschilds.
I suspect the Rothschilds wake up every morning just as surprised as the rest of us.
I suspect the Rothschilds wake up every morning just as surprised as the rest of us.
And I suspect that you are totally wrong.
So, if the Rothschilds know all and see all, how could they be so short sighted as to allow the CIA to create and spread the ebola virus?
If ebola becomes the next black plague and wipes out two thirds of humanity, what makes the Rothschilds think they are going to continue to be among the lucky one third?
Do the Rothschilds have access to some secret science that allows them to create a vaccine for themselves that none of us know about.
Are they going to test the vaccine before they try it out on themselves or are they just going to ssume that it works?
It took me 48 years to figure out the financial system and reverse
engineer it. It is indeed a very complicated system, but on the other hand it was made complicated so that most people would not have the time to reverse engineer it and figure out what the De Rothschild Bank
was up to. I was raised by a very strict conservative Chartered Accountant and I knew something was wrong with the whole picture from the time I was a small child. Greenspan and "The Committee to Rule The World", the Council on Foreign Relations, John Paulson, Jon Corzine, Henry Paulson, Robert Wolf, Tim Geithner, Ben Bernanke, and Nancy Pelosi, et cetera, made me that much more suspicious over time.
When the Wolfowitz Doctrine manifested, and Cheney, Bush, and Rumsfeld happened onto the scene prior to 911, I knew all those motherfuckers were up to no God damn good whatsoever. 2008
was not an end game the Bush administration ever thought would manifest, but I knew it was going manifest all along. How it is possible for the entire economic world to not see that 'Greenspan flaw' is beyond moi because I could see it happening over time eventually and I thought all the really smart Economists could see it too. Only Ragurham Rajan could foresee where it was all going to end up over time pre-crash. Others predicted a crash, but Rajan knew by the numbers when it was indeed going to crash. Only Rajan gets points for actually doing his homework IMHO.
Presumably, you and Raggie made the appropriate contrarian investments and cleaned up.
Is there a school for Paranoia that one must attend to be a part of this website?
No, just being more than averagely conscious should do it.
A thorough review would reveal conspiracy 'fact'.
...or you could just keep reaching for that golden ring.
Yeah- it is run by the NSA- they are specialists in the field. They spend untold billions to make sure my grandma and I don't discuss anything related to national security. They are so riveted by these conversations that they missed 9/11 and the Boston Marathon Bombing. On the flip side they did pass around some rather racy photos my grandma had sent to her boyfriend over the new fangled internet. All I can say is it involved a walker and her support hose were down.
Not really... just a functioning mind.

"All of these evil systems have to go"...
the article is written in this "fingerpointing at others"-way which makes me allways feel uncomfortable.
(information is appreciated though)
i prefer the thought of no more big pointing at others, but change as much as i can in and around me, just by my way of life, and theres a lot more to do. (for this i need information)
i think theres a big change in consciousness needed, for everybody, we all are the system.
what bilderberg did, now the internet is doing again. things have to change and will change. (but i dont know if we will survive the change;)
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” — Socrates
In a sane world sustainability would be a much higher priority.
Sustainability means planning our future in a way that we do not set ourselves up to crash and burn at some future date. Long-term planning has not been something politicians excel at or are even good at. Our system is geared at getting politicians reelected and fulfilling the most pressing needs of today.
Things like profit, greed, and quenching our unrelinquishing desire for growth are placed in front of longer term issues and needs. Mapping out a logical and sustainable long-term plan requires delving into some rather hefty philosophical questions like what brings real happiness. (This is not an endorsement of the carbon tax as much as a call for better planning and less waste) More on this important topic in the article below.
