U.S. Drone Strike Math – 41 Terrorists Targeted, 1,147 People Killed

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

While I haven’t covered the topic of drones very much as of late, it was a core topic at Liberty Blitzkrieg several years ago. The most recent, relevant piece I published on it was during the summer of 2013 and titled: The Truth About Drones.

Here’s an excerpt:

A lot of Americans have an impression that drone strikes are less damaging to civilian populations than conventional airstrikes. This would be false. In fact, earlier this month I highlighted an article from the Guardian that demonstrated how in reality drone strikes are 10x more likely to harm civilians per incident. Now, thanks to a recently leaked document we find that many more civilians including children have been killed in these strikes than many of us would like to admit. In fact, of the 746 people killed in drone strikes in Pakistan from 2006-2009, an incredible 20% were civilians and 94 (13% of the total) were children.

I strongly believe that the reason so many Americans blindly support the widespread use of drones is due to the mistaken belief that they are precise and result in few civilian casualties.

In the latest news, the Guardian reports that:

The drones came for Ayman Zawahiri on 13 January 2006, hovering over a village in Pakistan called Damadola. Ten months later, they came again for the man who would become al-Qaida’s leader, this time in Bajaur.

Eight years later, Zawahiri is still alive. Seventy-six children and 29 adults, according to reports after the two strikes, are not.

However many Americans know who Zawahiri is, far fewer are familiar with Qari Hussain. Hussain was a deputy commander of the Pakistani Taliban, a militant group aligned with al-Qaida that trained the would-be Times Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, before his unsuccessful 2010 attack. The drones first came for Hussain years before, on 29 January 2008. Then they came on 23 June 2009, 15 January 2010, 2 October 2010 and 7 October 2010.

Finally, on 15 October 2010, Hellfire missiles fired from a Predator or Reaper drone killed Hussain, the Pakistani Taliban later confirmed. For the death of a man whom practically no American can name, the US killed 128 people, 13 of them children, none of whom it meant to harm.

A new analysis of the data available to the public about drone strikes, conducted by the human-rights group Reprieve, indicates that even when operators target specific individuals – the most focused effort of what Barack Obama calls “targeted killing” – they kill vastly more people than their targets, often needing to strike multiple times. Attempts to kill 41 men resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,147 people, as of 24 November.

Some 24 men specifically targeted in Pakistan resulted in the death of 874 people. All were reported in the press as “killed” on multiple occasions, meaning that numerous strikes were aimed at each of them. The vast majority of those strikes were unsuccessful. An estimated 142 children were killed in the course of pursuing those 24 men, only six of whom died in the course of drone strikes that killed their intended targets.

Like all weapons, drones will inevitably miss their targets given enough chances. But the secrecy surrounding them obscures how often misses occur and the reasons for them. Even for the 33 named targets whom the drones eventually killed – successes, by the logic of the drone strikes – another 947 people died in the process.

It’s important to get some of the facts out to the public in order to have a more informed debate on the matter.

Too bad we can't use the same "drone-math" death formula on the rioting savages in Ferguson.

That would quickly stop the riot problem.

But you say, they're Americans... we can't do that!

Wrong!... Obola has already killed Americans by drone in the past.

Obola is nothing more than a mass murderer and should be tried as such. But I understand the reasoning behind the voting tally.

For  your reference to Obola, I would give you a thumbs up, the rest thumbs down.

Regardless of the mumbo-jumbo of Obama's legal team, there are already laws on the books regarding the killing of American nationals on foreign soil.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1119

A person who, being a national of the United States, kills or attempts to kill a national of the United States while such national is outside the United States but within the jurisdiction of another country shall be punished as provided under sections 1111, 1112, and 1113.

THe CIA essentially is a corporate mob, using clandestine methods to destroy businesses they don't support and to support businesses they own. The situation is actually much worse (58% killed are civilians) but the Nobel Prize Winner keeps droning.  Let it go, Jake, it's Pakistan:

Only 4% of drone victims in Pakistan named as al Qaeda members

October 16, 2014 by Jack Serle

As the number of US drone strikes in Pakistan hits 400, research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism finds that fewer than 4% of the people killed have been identified by available records as named members of al Qaeda. This calls in to question US Secretary of State John Kerry’s claim last year that only “confirmed terrorist targets at the highest level” were fired at.

The Bureau’s Naming the Dead project has gathered the names and, where possible, the details of people killed by CIA drones in Pakistan since June 2004. On October 11 an attack brought the total number of drone strikes in Pakistan up to 400.

The names of the dead have been collected over a year of research in and outside Pakistan, using a multitude of sources. These include both Pakistani government records leaked to the Bureau, and hundreds of open source reports in English, Pashtun and Urdu.

Naming the Dead has also drawn on field investigations conducted by the Bureau’s researchers in Pakistan and other organisations, including Amnesty International, Reprieve and the Centre for Civilians in Conflict.

Only 704 of the 2,379 dead have been identified, and only 295 of these were reported to be members of some kind of armed group. Few corroborating details were available for those who were just described as militants. More than a third of them were not designated a rank, and almost 30% are not even linked to a specific group. Only 84 are identified as members of al Qaeda – less than 4% of the total number of people killed.

Let's not forget the Nobel Prize Winner's double and triple tap strategy while the free and fair press of the West labels Putin as a mass murderer:

Outrage at CIA's deadly 'double tap' drone attacks

Late in the evening on 6 June this year an unmanned drone was flying high above the Pakistani village of Datta Khel in north Waziristan.

The buzz emitted by America's fleet of Predators and Reapers are a familiar sound for the inhabitants of the dusty hamlet, which lies next to a riverbed close to Pakistan's border with Afghanistan and is a stronghold for the Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

As the drone circled it let off the first of its Hellfire missiles, slamming into a small house and reducing it to rubble. When residents rushed to the scene of the attack to see if they could help they were struck again.

According to reports at the time, three local rescuers were killed by a second missile whilst a further strike killed another three people five minutes later. In all, somewhere between 17 and 24 people are thought to have been killed in the attack.

+1 Great job as usual. You saved me the bother of posting what would have been a half-assed account of how much worse it actually is from memory. Back a few years ago when predator drones started to become highlighted, I had the grim experience of seeing some of the footage from the aftermath of these bombings. I saw people picking up pieces of little kids from the ground in many of them and I could not believe the contrast of the mainstream media showing the crowing bastards from the Pentagon repeatedly defending the success of their missions. It's a sick world.

I think I once remarked that if you add up all the drone strikes since 2003 where the msm stated that "Senior Al-Queda" leaders were targeted, it would suggest the ridiculous idea of the command structure of Al-Queda being bigger than the Pentagon's. Which kind of makes sense considering the size of the CIA. ;)

Let's not forget this either...

The White House has acknowledged for the first time that strict standards President Obama imposed last year to prevent civilian deaths from U.S. drone strikes will not apply to U.S. military operations in Syria and Iraq.

A White House statement to Yahoo News confirming the looser policy came in response to questions about reports that as many as a dozen civilians, including women and young children, were killed when a Tomahawk missile struck the village of Kafr Daryan in Syria's Idlib province on the morning of Sept. 23.

I've been shouting this for months to friends and family, murdering families creates more terrorists then what you kill. Truth is...nobody gives a damn. Now that the holidays are here...the sheep will even care less as they line up at the trough to save $5. 100% right.

The drone strikes are a disaster for the US in three respects:

1. The large number of civilian casualties creates a whole generation of US-hating jihadists and potential terrorists.

2. Indiscriminate and collective punishment is a war crime. The Nazis did it, kill resistance members and their families.

3. Ultimately, the drone tech may be used domestically. Surveillance first, then armed drones. It is a slippery slope.

What has the land of the free become? It is so sad to witness this decline.

Actually the Nazi's and Imperial Japan took hostages.

"Scaring the shit out of people" wasn't how they worked.  They had a refreshing lack of hyprocisy as well.  Plus they never to my knowledge actually argued for anarchy as somehow "legal.". You might not have agreed with " the order of things" but there certainly was an order.

The masses unfortunately still see things as black and white signs and symbols and it is not their fault. Ignorance is something that is very dangerous about people. Education helps those that are capable of learning but most will not learn. I recommend open source software to help everyone understand even those that can never know. Lead by example like in AA but on a much wider scale. The founding fathers had prerequisites to voting. Something along the line of a standardized test might be called for today because of the power of technology and the inevitable consequences of the consolidation of money and power. The oligarchs know but their way of handling the situation is corrupt and since they are guilty of murder they will never or at least not easily change to see a better way.

from the statistics we are killing mostly innocent people to feed the war machine which is still rolling on from WWII when it couldn't be shut down.

the system is trapped by its own inertia, creating enemies where there are none and giving rise to emphathies among enemies as they find a common foe to hate together.

The USA incites the world to violence against it and calls it peace keeping.

The dollar is a might tool of war and a currency that lives by the sword will die by the sword. All wars are financial. War is a racket. the mob wants to own all the turf.

The droning will continue until morale improves. The war shuts down when all infrastructure is destroyed or the currency collapses.

We stay this course until overtaken by disease or natural disaster. The oligarchy want war and everyone else is collateral damage.

Whining about civilian casaulties has cost the US at least 100,000 military dead and wounded.  Only drones are allowed to pursue the battle against the enemy it seems.  Combat troops on the other hand have such restrictive rules of engagement that they are basically sitting ducks unable to effectively engage the enemy.  This has probably cost close to at least 90,000 needless US casaulties and made it impossible to defeat the Islamic terrorists who have only become emboldened by US impotence.

What have we accomplished in the Middle East?  Nothing but made many of them hate us and believe the Al-Queda and ISIS propaganda.

If we do send troops overseas it should be for a just cause and all out.

Instead we get imperialist excursions with, as you said, restrictive rules of engagement with half-assed campaigns.  No one should have to risk life and limb for that.

Droning is more of the same because there are most times no troops on the ground and the dronings take place in places and countries where we have not declared war.

Drones to protect troops in a valid war?  Fine.  Drones to kill civilians in an invalid non-declared war?  Shameful.

95% of the "civilians" killed by drones are either members of the intended targets family, family members of his entourage, locals paying homage to the target or family members of those conducting trade (guns, drugs etc) with the target.

I see cheap quadrocopters flying around. The technology is here already.

While I also see that, the main thing that envision is government goons kicking in American doors, shooting dogs, feeling up children and women, tazing teenagers, and killing the man of the house in an effort to confiscate "illegal flying devices"--"It's the law."

An American, not US subject.

IN the war on terror, which enables Defense contractors and the military to put their hands out for ever more hundreds of Billions of dollars every year it is very important to  have well motivated terrorists to replace the fallen, even better is to have an ever increasing number of terrorists so that Government handouts will increase each year, droning accomplishes this goal, every time somebodies small child, wife, daughter, husband or son is killed new American hating terrorists are created, drones are the perfect weapon, never capable of resolving the terrorism problem but very capable at ever expanding the problem.

Definition of Terrorist

1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.

2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.

3. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.

"Innocent Civilians"I think not. One thing we know for sure is that these so called civilians were in close proximity to the targets at the time. Are the targets purposesly occupying space amongst unknown peaceful civilians or are they hiding amongst those who harbour and protect them, or train them, or arm them?

I think the latter, and therefore these civilians are equally implicated. Where are the reports that claim that these "civilians"were not targeted, and on whose authority are these civilians posing no threat, nor having had any involvement with the beheading of the truly innocent?

I guess our gov is now taking lessons from the Likud on how to instill fear so gov can grow more biggerer and tyranical.  Maybe we need more tax dollars paying for bazookas to give to the local SWAT teams.

On a side note, my beagle just pissed on the tires of John McCain's car.  Maybe you should target him, but you'd only kill 5 or 6 neighbors, unless you hit him at a wedding party or a funeral.
