The 2014 Black Friday Frenzy: America Goes Shopping, In Photos

Tyler Durden's picture

Black Friday is the day when the trademark US consumerism takes center stage for its annual manic, full-frontal exposure around the globe. Here is what it looked like around the US...

... And not only, because other countries increasingly adopt the "best" of US traditions. Here is what happened in the UK earlier today:

Black Friday hops the pond: Shoppers compete to purchase retail items on "Black Friday" at an Asda superstore in Wembley.

... And Brazil:

LOL Sudden Debt

Also, have any ofthese Black Friday people heard of the internet?  You can consume on your fat ass and be done in 20 minutes after some price comparisions; the "deals" on Black Friday are really scam and this is all designed to provide viral marketing for the corporations.

"Also, have any ofthese Black Friday people heard of the internet?"

You guys are missing the point.   This is a major social event, yo.  A chance to meet new people, jostle for bargains, and if they gets in you way, bust they chops.  You can't get that on the internets.

Why ...why...why...is all I can say...and why take your kid to buy them their Christmas present....isnt it supposed to be a secret???  kind of takes the fun out of Christmas and opening your present...

It's not about Christmas anymore. It's about the toys and electronics.

For Christmass, I give my kids a blank paper and a stack of toy folders. And I always tell them they can cut toys from the magazines and paste them on the paper. When the paper is full it stops.

And than we give the paper to santa.

And I never buy them anything they've put on the paper.

And never any electronics. It need to be real toys.

off-topic but the timing of the Ukraine coup still seems odd to me with an election only a year or so away but it just struck me that if all the US' gold has been stolen - highly likely imo - and the Dutch and Germans etc were clamoring to get their gold back from US vaults - then the banking mafia in the US might have been desperate to get their hands on some in a hurry - Libya too, I assume all their gold was stolen in the confusion too?

Redistributing food from producers to themselves. The needy people are accidental. Its more profitable to incarcerate them.

Do not be deceived. Socialists only care about their paychecks and pensions. They just sell your assrape as beneficial to the greater good.

The greater good. The greater good.

They tax the people in the world who are doing good. In fact, the people in the world who are doing good are the only ones being taxed. In France its 40% off the top. Too bad they just stand there and take it, at best aspiring to become like minded criminals. Hillary? Hillary?

These are consumers not people.  They dont have savings they have debt.  Their ability to make interest payments on that debt is the basis of the current economic miracle.  its all good.

Where have you been since the Nixon Shock?  Or even more recently, where have you been since the 2008 bailouts?

Savers are losers nowadays.

Let's see, consumers can get a "high-yield" savings account with a 0.9% return, or they can get a 5% cash back rewards on their credit card.

During the Volcker years, it was smart to have savings, but his tenure is long over.

One of those lads was Andy Blackett, 30, an estate agent, who had two trolleys full of bargains. “I got two coffee makers, two tablets, two TVs and a stereo,” he said. “I couldn’t tell you the prices, but I know they’re bargains.”

A life centered around money is a hollow one and a nation centered around money isn’t really a nation.

"...we in Africa know that a dying lion is devoured by its escort of hyenas and jackals...

The modern democracies of the West, with their philosophies of the stomach and the stock exchange, cannot inspire the people nor protect them. They despise nationhood and despise race. But without our national and racial backbones how shall we stand erect? With quicksands as our foundation how shall we build? How shall we be true to ourselves if we have no selves? Our race is what we are; it is our form. It is our fathers and mothers and brothers and sisters and wives and children. They are the race. How then shall we count it of little worth? Shall we despise our own flesh and blood? Is that what modern democracy is supposed to mean? Is that what Christianity is supposed to mean?"

This is how the mainstream sheeple, who don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, demonstrate their life priorities. Ever see them fight like this for justice, a better education system, to stay out of war, or a system of fair taxation? The politicians that run this country are voted in by these same "folks", which should pretty much explain everything that is wrong with America.

Black Friday: The EBT money heads for the stock market, after leaving the taxpayers. The top 0.0003 percent, after being bailed out of the '08 crash by taxpayers, still ride the gravy train.

The top 400 households got 16 percent of all capital gains in 2010 | The Washington Post

November 25

This is what oligarchy looks like.

In 2010, the IRS reports that the top 400 households — or the top 0.0003 percent, for those of you keeping score at home — took home 16 percent of all capital gains. That's right: one out of every six dollars that Americans made selling stocks, bonds, and real estate (worth more than $500,000) went to the top-third of the top-thousandth percent of households.

It wasn't always thus. Between 1992 and 2005, the top 400 households "only" received an average of 7.8 percent of all capital gains. And, as you might expect, they got more of their money from wages back then — albeit, a still-paltry 13.8 percent — than the 6.4 percent they do today.

What's changed? Well, the housing bust happened, the middle class got scared off stocks at the worst possible time, and the top 1 percent (and really the top 0.1, no the top 0.01, no the ...) have more money to invest than at any time since 1939. Add it all up, and you can see why capital gains have become the ultimate luxury good.

Here's what all that means. In 2005, the housing bubble was in full, heady swing, and there were plenty of Miami condos, let alone actual houses, selling for more than the half-a-million-dollar capital gains exclusion on real estate (the first half-a-million in profit is exempt from taxes).

So, in other words, so many McMansions were being sold that the ultra-rich's share of capital gains fell a bit. But then the word "subprime" entered the vernacular, and both housing prices and sales fell off a cliff—with no real recovery since. Even worse, as Josh Zumbrun points out, everyone but the top 10 percent either couldn't afford to or couldn't stomach hanging on to their stocks as markets tanked in 2008.

That's why the subsequent bull market—and it's been a historic one—has been even more of a black tie affair than usual. And it doesn't hurt that, after 30 years of skyrocketing income inequality, the top 1 percent now control a bigger share of wealth than they have since FDR was railing against the "malefactors of great wealth" of his time. The more money you have, after all, the more money you have to invest.

Not only are the rich getting richer, though, but because they're getting more of their money from capital gains, they're getting taxed less, too. Remember, the top tax rate is 39.6 percent on ordinary income, but it's just 23.8 percent on capital gains—and was 15 percent in 2010. That's why the top 400 households only paid an effective rate of 18 percent then.

It's gotten so good for the Masters of the Universe that all they can complain about now is the "hyperinflation" in the Hamptons. Talk about problems.

"It is scarcely possible that the eyes of contemporaries should discover in the public felicity the latent causes of decay and corruption. This long peace, and the uniform government of the Romans, introduced a slow and secret poison into the vitals of the empire. The minds of men were gradually reduced to the same level, the fire of genius was extinguished, and even the military spirit evaporated."

faith — tradition — and all things with tempered reason- with the influx of all the others; Black Friday should be Minority Friday. The plague that destroys societies all around the world...I don't see reason as a trait in these people any more than I see in the Ferguson looters.

One of the many reasons I like Putin: "In Russia live Russians. Any minority, from anywhere, if it wants to live in Russia, to work and eat in Russia, should speak Russian, and should respect the Russian laws. If they prefer Shari'ya Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that's the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell 'discrimination'. We better learn from the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians." -- Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressing the Duma February 4th, 2013.

Alibaba Massive Fraud

Unrelated, but I believe highly important none the less.  We have some smart people on ZH and curious if anyone else has heard or read about this.  I am hoping someone that has the time and resources can look in to this and do some homework.

I was listening to The John Batchelor Show one night about a week or so again.  He is on the radio and can be found online.  Incredibly well versed on many international topics and world history.  I highly recommend you tune in to him when you have a chance.

In any event, he had three guests (from China) on and the discussion was surrounding a massive fraud at Alibaba.  The story goes something like this.  Alibaba is a marketplace and they collect a fee on each purchase from merchandisers that operate via their website.  Alibaba understands net profits and margins are of little concern to Wall Street, but growth in revenues and now we are talking.  Many multiples for "growth" in a global economy that is barely creeping along.  So, Alibaba hires a network of thousands to simply buy and return products all day.  If Alibaba held inventory this fraud would be somewhat more difficult to pull off, but with thousands of businesses connected to Alibaba it is very easy to hide the costs of labor and returns in underlying (most likely very closely held) companies.  Afterall, billions of $'s in stock price appreciation will pay a lot of people to sit on a computer all day and buy and return stuff on their website..

This is massive securities fraud and according to the guests, the scheme is "well known" in China.  Besides the financial statement fraud, one would have to wonder what type of due diligence was done by the investment bankers that brought Alibaba to market?

I don't know about you, but I think this could be a watershed Enron-like, Madoff-like story.

I simply cannot understand how people get so excited about buying mass produced units of whatever.  I guess this shows most people really will always be slaves one way or another.  If it's not working the fields, it's being a cog in the fiat-consumer machine. Thus a very select few of either ruthless or smart (perhaps both) game for themselves the finer things in life.
